jebus197 first off all good to know that you are interested, secondly "Hinduism" if you can call it that is not just about some physical "conversion", people don't need to formally dunk themselves in water and proclaim themselves a believer or anything like that, now coming to your question about meeting people who are at a similar position as you, you can certainly do so at a local temple, i am in Canada, so I am not really that aware of things in UK, but I do know that organizations like chinmaya mission have many people who may be of non Indian origin and "converted" or just plain interested in Sanatana Dharma.
I suggest to you though to check out:
www.hinduvoice.co.uk
It has Hindus from all over UK, if u post ur questions in the discussion section there you may get ur answers because most of them also live in UK.
I am sure if any forum members are from UK here, they will certainly answer ur questions, and I am pretty sure there are Chinmaya branches or other organizations in Newcastle, just need to find out.
Meanwhile here is a website of someone with a similar bent of mind (I don't know this person except that he is from US and is keenly interested in Eastern religions and philosophy, particularly in Advaita):
http://www.sunyaprajna.com/
This is his pics from his trip to India:

I suggest that u stick around on the forum, even if it may take u some time to meet someone in real life (because most of us here are in North America or India), it would still be fruitful to know people online to discuss things with.
And good luck in ur quest.
