Here is what one ancient tradition says.

lAlanAd bahavo doShAs tADanAd bahavo guNAH
atash ChAtrashcha putrashcha tADayet natu lAlayet ||

{ Many a drawbacks are there in affection, and many a good qualities in beating.
(It is advisable), therefore, that one should also beat one's sons and students, and never treat with (too much) affection. }

lAlayet pa~ncha-varShANi dasha-varShANi tADayet
prApte tu Shodashe-varShe putre mitravat Acharet ||

{ fondle a son till he is five, and beat him for next ten years
and once he reaches sixteen, treat him as your best friend }
