Vishwamitra and Vashistha were contemporary Rishis. I am assuming the same era here.
..
Whereas from Vashistha to Vyasa there are only 4 generations.
Vishwamitra to Vichitravirya is 19 generations.

The 4 "generations" of Vasishtha to Vyasa is actually a depiction of the branching off of Pravaras within the Vasishtha Gotra:
Ekarsheyas remained Vasishthas. Shakti Tryarsheya Pravara has the Indra Vasishthas (for instance the Manyus). From this came the Parasharya Vasishthas. (Parashara is mentioned in the Rgveda Mandala I). Finally, the Vyasa Vasishthas, who were important for the Samhita project.
Puru Kings

Janamejaya II
These kings from the Mahabharata shows that there was a huge gap between Vasishtha during Dushyanta and during Sudasa, and the Vasishtha who anointed Samvarana. (Vedic kings known from the Brahmanas etc. are not included here).
There were many Vasishthas and Vishvamitras, only of a few do we have personal names. The Vasishtha in the time of Harishchandra was known as Devaraja.
There were no Bharatas in the time of Shri Rama, except for the descendants of his brother in Gandhara. Thus, Shri Rama must precede Puru king Bharata. As Shri Rama is a descendant through Niyoga of a Vasishtha with Rajni Madayanti, widow of Kalmashapada, we have again an ancient Vasishtha.
Pururavas calls himself Vasishtha in Rgveda Mandala X.95.17b (úpa shikSHaamy urváshiiM vásiSHThaH = I, Vasishtha, call Urvashi to meet me.)
At least this shows that Vasishtha was there in that Praaciina Kaala. Rshi Vishvamitra then wasn't born yet as the Somavamshi Raja Vishvaratha.
It was only after an encounter with Brahmarshi Vasishtha that Raja Vishvaratha of the Kanyakubja Amavasus gave up the world and became a Rajarshi ascetic. In this episode of his life he got the name Vishvamitra. And finally after many generations he was accepted as Brahmarshi by Guru Vasishtha. (all happened between the rules of Trishanku and Dasharatha)
