In Kerala, where imperialism is a word that sells like hot cakes, the biggest international issue figuring in the campaigns for the 15th Lok Sabha election is not meltdown or the US attack on Iraq. It is: Who all are the âagentsâ of Israel in Kerala?
In the eye of this storm are two Congress candidates â former UN Under-Secretary General Shashi Tharoor and former State Minister KV Thomas. Almost all Muslim organisations have declared that they will work against these two candidates.
But the issue of Indiaâs growing interest in relationship with Israel does not end there. The CPM has wielded this as a sharp weapon against the UDF candidates. The CPM is doing it just for concealing its own frailties: The SNC Lavalin corruption case, in which party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan is an accused, and the issue of poll pact with Abdul Nasser Madani.
But the UDF is worried. The first victim of such a campaign is the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a constituent of the Opposition UDF. They are contesting two seats, on which one of the candidates is none other than Union Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahmed.
The IUML has been on the defensive on international issues. Ahmed refused to resign as the Minister when the 123 Agreement issue came up. He voted for the UPA Government in the trust vote in July last.
