After Jyoti Basu's death, his family and close ones are each remembering him in their own



His son, Chandan, daughter-in-law Rakhi and grandson Subhajyoti will be observing religious rituals by eschewing non-vegetarian food for 13 days. A shradh is also expected to be observed after the 13 days, though the details have not yet been finalised. Chandan Basu's family members and close friends confirmed he had decided to observe the rituals.



According to Pradip Pal, who is close to the family, one of the priests known to the family will help him observe the shradh. A close friend of Chandan, who is a business aide and did not want to be quoted, said he had decided to follow the rituals and that he had already started observing it.



In 2002, when Jyoti Basu's wife Kamal passed away, Chandan had observed these rituals according to Hindu beliefs. The veteran Marxist leader had apparently said then that he did not want to impose his own beliefs on his son, as they were two individuals and might have separate views on these things.
