3. When caught, it pleads misunderstanding or decides to apologise or distracts with irrelevant, unrelated or invented counter-allegations. Trying for an equal-equal, so that it doesn't remain conspicuous.
4. It tries to blame others. (Including individuals, like the victims of sexual abuse.) It hardly ever excommunicates any of its own hierarchy, which shows that it is NOT repentant and WILL do it again. I think I saw a recent example illustrating this, will try to find it.
5. It tries to cover the matter up. E.g. the facts of Vatican/catholic church's fundamental involvement in nazism in Europe, especially with Ustashe nazis of Croatia. This matter could be covered up for a long time because wartime documents were classified information - until they were declassified more recently.
6. If it's a huge crime and the church involvement has become so public that denial, cover-up, apologising and/or shifting from one foot to the other foot won't save the day, it will blame the devil.

But the explanation for the "How" is simple:

2. Catholicism is inherently fascist (IIRC, nobeliefs.com has the documentation). Christianism is both the ur-fascism and the most fully-developed form of fascism, of which catholicism is the most expert. It's so advanced because it has become expert over the ages.
