Quote:A UK newspaper pointed out that some supposed WikiLeaks cables critical of
India, reported by Paki press, do not exist. The Pakistani newspapers have
acknowledged being duped and have pointed to the sources on the web.

The fake cables purportedly said:
"..An earlier cable described Indian Army in gross Human rights violations in
Indian Held part of Jammu and Kashmir while some Lt. Gen HS Panag, the then
GOC-in-Chief of the Northern Command of the Indian Army was equated with General
Milosevic of Bosnia with regard to butchering Muslims through war crimes.."
"Another cable confirmed that there was a nexus of top Indian army officials and
extremist Hindu outfits. This cable suggested that an Indian Police officer, a
counter terror specialist with the name of Hemant Karkare had exposed this nexus
to some extent when he arrested a serving Colonel of Indian Army, Lt. Colonel
Purohit for blazing a Pakistan bound train. ..The day, Karkare was eliminated
in a pre-planned ambush during the Mumbai attacks, a cable sent to the US read

Washington termed Hindutva brotherhood in general and Shiv Sena in

Pakistani media: Fake WikiLeaks cables attacking India published
In the December 9 edition of The Express Tribune, a report was published on page
8 under the caption ââ∠âWikiLeaks: What US officials think about the Indian
Armyâââ¬ÃÂ. It now transpires that the story, which was run by a news agency,
Online, was not authentic.
The Express Tribune deeply regrets publishing this story without due
verification and apologises profusely for any inconvenience caused to our valued
readers.
UK-based newspaper Guardian published a report on this issue, which is being
printed for our readers.
The Guardian story
Citing the WikiLeaks cables, major Pakistani newspapers this morning carried
stories that purported to detail eye-popping American assessments of Indiaâââ‰â¢s
military and civilian leaders.
According to the reports, US diplomats described senior Indian generals as vain,
egotistical and genocidal; they said Indiaâââ‰â¢s government is secretly allied
with Hindu fundamentalists; and they claimed Indian spies are covertly
supporting militants in Pakistanâââ‰â¢s tribal belt and Balochistan.
ââ∠âEnough evidence of Indian involvement in Waziristan, Balochistan,âââ¬Ã read the
front-page story in The News; an almost identical story appeared in the
Urdu-language Jang.
If accurate, the disclosures would confirm the worst fears of Pakistani
nationalist hawks and threaten relations between Washington and New Delhi. But
they are not accurate.
An extensive search of the WikiLeaks database by the Guardian by date, name and
keyword failed to locate any of the incendiary allegations. It suggests this is
the first case of WikiLeaks being exploited for propaganda purposes.
The controversial claims, published in four Pakistani national papers, were
credited to the Online Agency, an Islamabad-based news service that has
frequently run pro-army stories in the past. No journalist is bylined.
Shaheen Sehbai, group editor at The News, described the story as ââ∠âagenciesâââ‰â¢
copyâââ¬Ã and said he would investigate its origins.
The incident fits in with the wider Pakistani reaction to WikiLeaks since the
first cables emerged.

Pakistani papers duped by bogus WikiLeaks cables
Pakistani newspapers carried stunning claims yesterday about India, the
country's long-time foe, wrongly sourced to the WikiLeaks data dump.
...
A number of papers including the Daily Mail and The News of Pakistan carried
these reports, which were not signed. The source of the information? A Pakistani
news wire called "Online News" that appears to be closely tied to the
government.
The News, in apologizing to readers today, leaves the strong impression that the
bogus reports were part of a government misinformation campaign. The paper
writes that the Mohsin Baig, the head of online news, said "he had just returned
from Turkey where he had accompanied the prime minister on his official visit
and was therefore in the dark about how the story was released."
Another editor at Online News said he didn't know the source of the fake cables
and refused to contact an employee who might know the answer. Eventually The
News "learnt from our sources that the story was dubious and may have been
planted" and said the story first appeared in two local papers "known for their
close connections with certain intelligence agencies."

Pakistani newspaper The News identified the sources:

On further inquiries, we learnt from our sources that the story was dubious and
may have been planted.
A check on the Internet as well as The Guardian report showed that the story was
not based on Wikileaks cables, and had in fact originated from some local
websites such as The Daily Mail and Rupee News known for their close connections
with certain intelligence agencies. The Guardian quoted Shaheen Sehbai, Group
Editor The News, as describing the story as ââ∠âagenciesâââ‰â¢ copyâââ¬Ã and said he
would investigate its origins.
