Caste - Marathi Literacy - English Literacy
Deshastha Brahmin - 62% - 10%
Konkonastha Brahmin - 63% - 19%
Saraswat Brahmin - 54% - 11%
Maratha ( upper caste, Pawar etc ) - 4.6% - 0.22%
Kunbi ( lower caste maratha peasant ) - 9.4% - 0.27%
Lingayat - 13% - 0.30%
Mahar ( Ambedkar ) - 1% - 0.01%

Dr.Ambedkar is remarkable getting a US law degree from such a deprived background
The next shocker is that the Kunbi peasant was twice as literate as the Maratha elite
Brahmins may have withheld knowledge of Sanskrit, but never the local language- and English was open to all
Also remarkable that TN-MBC had much higher literacy than Lingayat, a FC in Bombay Presidency
