"Desi" word is part of the "South Asian" religion which seeks to browbeat Indians into being part of the "South Asian" ummah. Term like 'Indian' is different. Pre-colonialism, even person in Thailand would have refered himself/herself as 'Indian' without problems. Term Indian does not signify an ideological "Movement" of being Indian.
