BSP crosses 200!

This means the brahmins have voted as a votebank and solidly voted for Behenji.

So, my 'prediction' was wrong! <img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />
What is most surprising is Mayavati's decisive victory. No one quite saw that coming. It may actually be good for UP to have a single party govt rather than congress ruling by proxy under president's rule. And as Rajesh pointed out, it appears that Brahmins voted as a block for Mayavati. Very interesting implications for caste politics. This will challenge the conventional wisdom that only groupings that vote as vote banks arre religious minorities or OBCs and dalits.

Yogendra Yadav appeared pretty upset at the suggestion that Brahmins voted for Mayawati, he first tried to play it down claiming the percentage of Brahmins who voted for Mayawati was the same as the perecentage of the other upper castes who voted for her, then he claimed only poor Brahmins voted for Mayawati, and then finally said she only asked for Brahmin votes to convince others she had changed. Yogendra Yadav realizes what this election means, upper caste Hindus form a votebank in UP. They will not be taken for granted. I see this as a step towards greater Hindu mobilization.

My analysis
BSP victory means - Upper caste and Dalit combination works SP Loss - OBC and Muslims only is not enough BJP loss - Upper caste voted for BSP and less % voted Congress - OBC reservation and Muslim appeasement failed and also Gandhi family wonder couldn't do much. People had rejected Gandhi Family. Muslim party - Failed. Ajit Singh - He can still carry Jat. VP Singh - Jokers are always jokers. QUOTEParties Leads Seats won BJP & others 0 49 Congress 0 21 Samajwadi Party 0 96 BSP 03 208 Others 0 25 Total 402/403 Kalyan Singh's son Raj Veer Singh loses in Debai Independent Akhilesh Singh leading in Rae Bareli Kalyan Singh's daughter-in-law Premlata Devi wins BJP fares poorly in Ayodhya region - VHP factor.

I doubt she will promote reservation for OBC, Jatav don't like Yadav. She want to keep upper caste in good humor now. She may support Kalam. She is very unpredictable person. First she will transfer some IAS officers from Lucknow to Shikarpur.

Uttar Pradesh desperately needs good governance to catch up with other fast developing states.
Whether arrival of Mayawati improves upon governance in the state, only time will tell. However, past pattern shows that Mayawati belongs to the same league of one person (autocratic) rulers such as Jayalalitha, Laloo Yadav, Mulayam Yadav. Also her past dubious record on Taj corruption case, Kanshi Ram death controversy and her liberal use of colorful & not so diplomatic words do not inspire confidence. She can make UP worse by her ruthless and insensitive rule. Being a single woman and suffering from victimisation syndrome (Dalit back ground) could mean trouble for her opponents. She could paralyse the state machinery to get back at her opponents. Utar Pradesh belongs to Bimaru group of states with dismal performance on almost all social and economic indices. UP's showcase Noida belonging to NCR is the only city which showed some promise in the rising IT/ITES sector. However, Nithari killings and frequent cases of kidnappings (Adobe India Chief's son) have made the place unattractive for entrepreneurs even though it has somewhat better infrastructre than Gurgaon. Overall, situation appears to be grim. <img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' />

............. Overall, situation appears to be grim Yes, governance is always bad in UP. But if you compare with current center, UPA government (Dal scam, "Q' scam', Nuke deal, 1857, Muslim first, OBC reservation......) , Mayawati is much better. She is not using Indian Embassy to protect her people. She is not using EJ or Middle East to win election. She is not using Oil money from Iraq. No Die-nasty here. Her kids are not staying in Luthen's bungalows like Queen. Mayawati don't get funding from abroad or influenced by NGOs or EJ, which is good. She is not polished, but better than polished crooks ruling India. She is not singing for Marx or Pope like current commie PM of India. Whatever, she is able to fight election in every state.

BSP victory due to "sarv samaj" support: Mayawati QUOTELucknow, May 11. (PTI): Marking a significant shift in her approach towards the electorate, CM-to-be Mayawati today credited 'sarv samaj' (all castes) rather than 'bahujan samaj'(majority castes) for her landslide victory in Uttar Pardesh.
"I am aware of the several vicious propaganda launched by some quarters to mislead the upper caste people against me," Mayawati, flanked by S C Mishra, a Brahmin and her new aide who joined the party last year and party leader Nasimmuddin Siddique, told reporters at the BSP headquarters here. "My party workers were livid at such wild allegations and said they should be given a befitting response. But I calmed then down and said we don't need to give them any explanation, leave it on the people," she said. "And it gives me a great delight to inform you that people give a befitting reply. People of all castes, be it Brahmin, Kshatriya, Kyastha or numerous denominations of lower caste, voted us to power," Mayawati said, drawing a huge applause from the supporters thronging the press conference. ............................

The victory of caste arithmeticQUOTEThat confrontation was always a bit artificial in the context of Uttar Pradesh. Anyone who goes down to the grassroots finds that the Dalits' real battle was not with the upper castes as much as with the 'Other Backward Castes'.
This is a point that was grasped very early on by the late Kanshi Ram, founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party. (We were friends for decades, going back to a time when the Bahujan Samaj Party had not yet been founded.) And he discussed his long-term plans with me a couple of times. Kanshi Ram put it very simply. The landless labourer, he said, would never be accepted as a partner in power by the middle castes, the OBCs, that had come to the forefront as the owners of the land. The Dalits could not come to power on their own, no matter that they constituted roughly 25 per cent of the population. It thus made sense to join hands with the Brahmins, using that term as a shorthand for all those at the very top of the caste hierarchy. Mayawati's antipathy for Mulayam Singh Yadav is famous, but it would not matter even if the latter were one of the former's rakhi brothers. The bedrock of the Samajwadi Party is the Yadav sub-caste, the dominant OBC group in Uttar Pradesh. The natural constituencies of the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party were always going to clash. Kanshi Ram's plans called for forging the Dalits into a coherent formation as a first step. Once the Bahujan Samaj Party was certain of its Dalit votebank, it was time for the second step, namely the alliance with the upper castes. ................... To paraphrase a quotation famous in French history, this was not just a crime, it was a blunder. It left the upper castes, traditional supporters of the party, with the impression that the BJP was working hand in hand with the Samajwadi Party. This was to prove costly for the BJP given the caste politics of Uttar Pradesh.

Ashok/Vijnan, 400% agreed. More then anything else this the presence of brahmins-as-votebank has been realized. Congrats to Behenji who realized this and executed it to perfection.

It would be interesting to find out how many of the winners from BSP are brahmins ?

The results of the Utter Pradesh elections have been on the most unexpected lines. While all had guessed that BSP will do well, nobody had expected that it will get an absolute majority. Similarly, the performance of the BJP has been totally unexpected. The expectation was that it will improve its position or at the most retain its position. However, the minus swing of 3.2 % of the votes has brought in disaster. While the 7% gain by the BSP has been significant, as it indicates that BSP received the support of a sizable section of the forwards ,ie those voters who are neither OBC or SC/ST. Utter Pradesh being the largest State in the country, it will not be surprising that the election results will throw up new equations even in national politics.
