Results of all 243 seats declared. Here's a breakup. JDU 98, BJP 76 (combined is 174), RJD 34, LJP 13 (combined is 47), Cong 4, Others 17.
A clear sweep for Nitish Kumar's JDU, but the party cannot go it alone as it is still short of the magic figure of 122 needed to form government.
The BJP seems to be biggest gainer -- 55 in 2005; 79 in 2010. That's up 24 seats!
10:45 AM Worst-ever routing for Cong, RJD: It's a neck-to-neck fight on which party recieved the worst drubbing in the 2010 Bihar polls. In 2005, the RJDwon 63 seats to 47 this time, down 16 seats, while the Congress won 9 seats in 2005, to 4 this time, down 5 seats.
The Congress Party will say that this Bihar loss was NOT Rahul Gandhi's fault. It was someone else's.We don't know who but not Rahul's.
Mukul Vasnik, the man who spearheaded the elections for the Congress says: The results are disappointing. We have to find out what went wrong and why the huge turnout at Rahul Gandhi's rallies did not translate into votes.
Dynastic politics don't count: BJP:
The BJP today described the election results in Bihar as a victory of meritorious leadership over dynastic politics with a message for the future of Indian politics that a membership of a family or dynasty does not count.
Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said the election results have showed that politics of Bihar has changed and that "charisma or family" does not win elections, in an obvious attack on RJD chief Lalu Prasad and Rahul Gandhi who campaigned for Congress.

Rahul Gandhi, a Congress general secretary, campaigned extensively in Bihar, frequently accusing the chief minister of not doing enough for the state's development.
Here's the comparative results from the 2005 polls:
JDU 88 (2005) 109 (2010) +15
BJP 55 (2005) 86 (2010) +30 (the most outstanding win yet)
RJD 54 (2005) 23 (2010) - 25
LJP 10 (2005)9 (2010)

Counting of votes in all the five states will take place on May 13.
The model code of conduct has come into force immediately, Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi said announcing the schedule.
While West Bengal has 294 assembly constituencies, Tamil Nadu has 234, Kerala 140, Puducherry 30 and Assam 126.
The elections are the first battle of the ballot in the new year and would involve over 14.39 crore electorate in the five states with West Bengal having the largest number of over 5.60 crore electors followed by Tamil Nadu 4.59 crore.

The decision was also unanimous as leaders at the meeting felt that after so much tension, the cadres of the two parties may not jell on the ground. A senior minister of the DMK said ââ¬Åwith Congress out of the way, by contesting more seats on our own, we can win a majority on our own.ââ¬Â
The chief minister had termed the Congress demand for 63 seats, after the DMK agreed to part with 60, and also insisting on the constituencies of its choice was unrealistic as well as unfair and saw in this a Congress unwillingness to continue with the alliance.
