Same question for Rajiv Gandhi.

But at least Rajinder Vadra was not a christian, my source from Moradabad says, who knows this family for at least 5 decades since they had migrated from East-Punjab to this town at the time of partition. Family always had pro-Hindutva leanings and being quite rich (at least used to) donate frequently to Hindutva causes. As the commentator mentioned in above, there is an RSS school in Moradabad running on their property. Rajender's elder brother was said to be an RSS man too.

Just ran a search on Marcinkus and our own Santa to see if there's any more mention out there. Well there is, but by the same N. Krishna (the person's been busy posting this kind of stuff) - whose comments show that he is in fact talking about the one-and-the-same dude 'archbishop paul marcinkus' as connected with Vatican banker Calvi.

While I thought the Vadra family 'curse' was all too much like a catholic inquisition-y/mafia style 'suicide'-murder but that that's where the similarity ended (i.e. no other relation than catholicism/vatican), this person finds there are more direct connections between Calvi's murder etc and our own homegrown terrorist dynasty.

It is no wonder that the fourth rate fellows end in legal profession in India and they have no shame or integrity. H R Bhardwajâs ministry allowed the bofors pay off to Soniaâs boyfriend Quattrocchi to be defreezed against our national interest. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) B Datta, in February 2005, attested a CBI affidavit about the genuineness of the Swedish documents regarding Bofors kickbacks as well as the admissibility of the very same set of documents. The documents were authenticated by the justice department of Sweden and is admissible. But after taking bribe ASG, B Datta, in May 2005 changed his stand and stated just opposite of his version before the court that the documentary evidence against the accused was not authentic and hence not admissible.

All knew very well that the documents were authenticated by the justice department of Sweden and could be treated as âadmissibleâ but all worked for the Rome Mary Sonia Gandhi. This lying by Additional Solicitor General Dutta allowed Justice R S Sodhi who was also paid by Hinduja brothers, to quash the charges against the Hinduja brothers. This verdict of the corrupt Justice R S Sodhi was quoted by another Additional Solicitor General KP Pathak, who was paid by Quattrocchi, to give a clean chit to Quattrocchi. Additional Solicitor General Pathakâs opinion formed the basis for defreezing of Quattrocchiâs accounts in the UK. Corrupt Additional Solicitor Generals Datta, Pathak, a corrupt Judge Sodhi, the thief Law Minister H R Bhardwaj and the corrupt CBI were all followed the Italian christian plant Soniaâs instruction for looting from India.

EC Qureshi showed his bias and gave Congress the election dates. Two ECs are biased towards congress party. For the sake of democracy congress party should be disbanded as Gandhi advised. MPs have demanded kickbacks from MPLAD in camera. Chawla and his wife Rupika Chawla had set up social welfare trusts for congress MPs and Rs 85 lakh, from congress MPs were received. Chawla an IAS fellow cannot run such thing, but got special waiver of rules. Sonia had smuggled some Rs 10000 crore worth of Indian antique to Italy and there are cases registered in TN for such smuggling, without naming Sonia. Rupika Chawla role in getting the antique should also be investigated.

Chawla was adversely commented for his emergency excesses by commission and should not have been appointed in the first place. At the time of appointment media has pointed out that Chawla as CE can favour congress because of his track record. Also there was the issue of voting by Sonia while being a citizen of Italy on records and anytime Sonia could be put in jail if a CE acts in future. Sonia married Rajiv in 1968. Indian citizenship applied 15 years later on 7-4-83. Citizenship granted on 30-4-83. Yet Sonia was a voter in 1980, at serial number 388 in polling station 145 of the New Delhi constituency while a citizen of Italy. In 1982, Soniaâs name was deleted and reinstated in 1983 even though the qualifying date for registering as a voter was January 1 that year. An impartial EC can rake up the case of Sonia being a voter in 1980. Sonia is known to have lied about her qualification and there are other cases pending in the courts. So a pliable EC is essential for the congress.

Navin Chawla has authored two books on Mother Teresa âMother Teresaâ and âFaith and Compassion â The Life and Work of Mother Teresaâ At the time of Indian Emergency (1975 - 77) he was secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. Shah Commission which inquired into the excesses during the Emergency, indicted Mr Chawla for having been âauthoritarian and callousâ and for gross misuse of power âin cynical disregard of the welfare of citizensâ. Further, it declared that he was âunfit to hold any public office which demands an attitude of fair play and consideration for othersâ Election Commissioner and his wife Rupika ran the Jaipur-based Lala Chaman Lal Education Trust which had secured MPLADS funds from Congress MPs A.A. Khan, R.P. Goenka, Ambika Soni, Dr Karan Singh and Mr A.R. Kidwai.The trust was allotted six acres of land by the Congress government in Rajasthan when Mr Ashok Gehlot was the Chief Minister.

Chawla an IAS fellow cannot run such thing, but got special waiver of rules. Rupika Chawla helped Sonia to smuggle Rs 10000 crore worth of Indian antique to Italy for which cases registered in TN without naming Sonia.

From the congress side, there is no comment on the facts that Mr.Chawla (or his trusts) received money from Congress. There is no comment on the facts that he got exception from the govt, to receive those funds. In fact, it is a joke to say that he has not received any money after he became EC. (is it not just sufficient to receive funds before becoming EC, to enable him to become EC?). There is no comment on the points of law that Arun Jaitely had clearly pointed out, that the recommendations of CEC is binding for the removal of an EC. All that the congress can say is â the timing is wrong and now, we know that even that is not valid anymore. This is nothing but prostitution of the institutions. Jai hind!

On the evening of 18 June 1982, the lifeless body of Roberto Calvi - the director of Banco Ambrosiano, an Italian bank on the verge of bankruptcy and with strong and extensive connections to the Roman Catholic church - was found hanging under Blackfriar's Bridge across the River Thames in London. The banker, who was found with bricks in his pockets, was thought to have committed suicide, probably out of a sense of personal responsibility for the bank's collapse.

That, at least, was the original outcome of the forensic investigation carried out at remarkable speed by the British authorities. However, from the very beginning there were those who doubted the accuracy of the findings, and today - 6 October - legal proceedings commenced in Italy which should establish how and by whom the main figure in one of the largest financial scandals in the past 50 years was murdered. Those standing trial for their alleged involvement in his death are a senior member of the Sicilian Mafia and four accomplices.

Dubious deals

In the 1970s, Roberto Calvi was an ambitious banker who had excellent connections within the Vatican and a group known as P2, a secretive lodge of freemasons which formed a state within the state of Italy. It later emerged that, during this period, Mr Calvi's bank spent hundreds of millions of dollars speculating in South America, on financing weapons deals for Argentina and Chile (then ruled by the Pinochet regime), on secret contributions to Poland's free trade union Solidarity, to Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza and to Italy's Christian Democrats.

The capital used for these ends was raised using written guarantees from the Vatican's own bank, the Istituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR), which later bought off its liabilities with a payment of 251 million dollars. The head of the IOR, Monsignor Marcinkus, was subsequently discredited as a result of the scandal and was demoted to the humble position of priest in Chicago.

The Banco Ambrosiano finally went bankrupt in 1982, leaving debts of 1200 million dollars. One year before, Roberto Calvi was convicted on currency violation charges, but released on bail waiting appeal. On 10 June 1982, when it became clear that the Banco Ambrosiano could not be saved, he disappeared, apparently in an attempt to evade his creditors. Eight days later he was found dead in London.

The suicide theory was finally dismissed completely a few years ago, when a Mafia informant told the authorities that Robert Calvi had indeed been murdered - by the Cosa Nostra, which had also ploughed millions of its illegal earnings into the bank. Meanwhile, new investigations revealed that it was almost impossible that Robert Calvi could have hanged himself under Blackfriar's bridge. The significance of the bricks found in his pockets is also said to have become clear - a warning to the freemasons.

The men behind the killing

The two people now thought to have actually killed him, and the man who rented the boat on which - according to the informant - Roberto Calvi was actually murdered, were themselves murdered in 1983, possibly by the Mafia. The alleged murderer was killed by a bomb planted in his car. However, the persons believed to have ordered the killing are still alive. Those standing trial include former Mafia 'treasurer' Pippo Calo - who is already serving a long jail sentence - businessman Francesco Pazienza, who brokered many a dubious deal for the Banco Ambrosiano, and three others.

Now, some 23 years after the murder and with loss of several useful witnesses, the court in Italy faces the difficult task of trying to shed further light on the mysterious death of Roberto Calvi.

Italian judges could soon end one of the most contentious murder mysteries in recent European history, involving mobsters, Masons, priests, politicians, and a man known as `God's banker'.

The fate of Roberto Calvi has been the subject of speculation and intrigue since his death in London 17 years ago. Calvi disappeared as the bank he ran collapsed with debts of more than $1.5 billion; what was then the largest financial scandal ever. It precipitated a string of government inquiries, criminal court cases and loss of life.

Until now, the only outstanding piece in the puzzle was how Calvi had died. But judges in Rome have charged three men with murder in a move which highlights significant flaws in the way British police investigated the death.

Calvi had been the head of Banco Ambrosiano, a small Milan finance house that had mushroomed because of his successful investments. The bank had been established in 1896 by Catholic prelates and developed significant links with the Vatican's own bank, the Istituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR). But Calvi, under the tuition of another rogue Italian financier, Michele Sindona, overstretched himself and accumulated massive debts.

In 1982, while out on bail having been convicted of illegally exporting Italian currency and with his bank teet-ering on the brink of bankruptcy, Calvi disappeared. Using a false passport, he slipped first to Yugoslavia, then Austria, before ending up in a tiny apartment in Chelsea. Several days later he was dead.

Since then, the account of Calvi's demise has had more twists than the rope from which his lifeless body was found suspended on scaffolding beneath London's Blackfriars Bridge. An inquest five weeks after he died ruled he had committed suicide but his widow, Clara, complained successfully that coroner David Paul had rushed through the evidence, so a second hearing was ordered. That added to the confusion by returning an open verdict.

Clara and Roberto's son, Carlo, took up the initiative in an attempt to prove that the banker did not take his own life. They have spent an estimated $10 million in the process, starting with the belief - now proved by Italian judicial authorities - that City of London police officers did not do their job properly in the first few crucial days.

Speaking from Montreal, where he and his mother now live, Carlo explains: `They lost momentum right at the start, and from that point onwards it was always going to be difficult to catch up. They didn't bother to make any checks into the criminal backgrounds of those who surrounded my father at the time he met his death.'

A confidential inquiry ordered by the Metropolitan Police into the case in 1987 concluded that important mistakes had been made. Officers admitted not having searched the room where Calvi had spent his last days and that no effort was made to check for fingerprints. The findings were forwarded to senior officers in the Met suggesting that Italian organised criminals based in London may well have been responsible, but no further action was taken.

Yet confirmation of the dossier's findings came from within the Mafia. Francesco Marino Mannoia, who turned informant in 1991 after his brother was killed by rival gangsters, said the Sicilian mob's man in London, Francesco Di Carlo, was responsible for Calvi's death. A fresh inquiry under Judge Otello Lupacchini led to a murder charge against Di Carlo, a Mafia assassin who confessed to more than 100 murders. Di Carlo was moved to Italy after being jailed in Britain for 25 years for heroin smuggling, but first he joined Mannoia in co-operating with the authorities.

When the Calvi case comes to trial early next year, standing with him in the dock will be Flavio Carboni, a flamboyant Sardinian property millionaire who escorted Calvi on his flight from Italy to London, and Giuseppe `Pippo' Calo, the man known as the Sicilian Mafia's `cashier'.

Calo is accused of having commissioned Carboni to smuggle Calvi out of Italy before having Di Carlo, known to anti-Mafia magistrates as `Frank the Strangler', carry out the killing. Calvi is said to have fallen foul of the mob after losing money he had borrowed from them through Licio Gelli, head of Italy's notorious P2 Masonic lodge, to screen debts at Banco Ambrosiano. Although the Mafia recovered its cash, Calo judged Calvi untrustworthy and is alleged to have ordered his death.

Carlo Calvi said: `We're not happy with the fact that these three men are low-level. We believe that they are just the executioners. We hope to go on and identify who it was who gave the orders for my father to be killed. We believe it stretches further than those already arrested, and that means it could be a long process.'

The Gumla district administration has ordered an inquiry to find out how the names of at least two foreigners, both Jesuit priests, have been figuring in the state voters' list since 1995.

The inquiry comes at a time when the state home department has issued stern directives to the police superintendents of the 22 districts to locate all foreigners illegally staying or settled in their respective areas of jurisdiction. The home directive lays down that emphasis should be given to locating all illegal Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationals located in the state.

Gumla subdivisional officer Praveen Shankar said directives have been issued to district circle officer K.K. Rajhans to conduct a thorough probe as to how voters' identity cards have been issued to two Belgian Jesuit priests who have reportedly not acquired Indian citizenship.

The two Belgian priests have been identified as Fr P.P. Banphal, retired headmaster of St Ignatius High School, Gumla, and director of a local NGO called AROUSE, and Fr Mark Debrawer, head of Gram Uthan, another NGO. Both the two priests are settled in Gumla.

"My orders are based not on any home department orders, but on reports that the names of the two Jesuit priests have somehow crept into the state voters' list. As an SDO, I am fully competent to conduct an inquiry under the Representation of the People Act," the Gumla SDO said.

Shankar said notices were being issued to the two foreign nationals to appear before him in person and to explain their case to him.

"Both the two Jesuit priests have a right to be heard as part of natural justice before any punitive or other action is initiated against them", he added.

Shankar conceded that the Gumla circle officer (CO) has already carried out preliminary inquiries in the matter and has submitted a report to him.

Refusing to divulge any information in the matter during the pendency of inquiry proceedings, Shankar said the circle officer's report was "defective and incomplete "in many respects and that a thorough probe, as per rules was required.

"Voters identity card is a citizen's card issued exclusively to Indian citizens. Foreigners are entitled to such cards only after they acquire Indian citizenship. Wrongful representation is punishable with one year' s imprisonment," the Gumla subdivisional officer said. Â

Addressing a tribal rally on Sunday, Munda had announced he would bring legislation to ban conversion in the state to protect tribal culture and identity. Most of the independent legislators supported the announcement but Ekka, also an independent legislator, issued a statement opposing such a bill.

"I do not feel it is appropriate to introduce such a bill. In a secular country like India everyone has the right to live on the call of his conscience. If anybody wants to change his religion willingly he should not be prevented from doing so," Ekka's press statement said Monday.

"People should not be bound by any law. We supported the government on the condition that no different attitude will be adopted towards Christians and Muslims."

Ekka is one of the five independents supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government. The five independents are known as G-5. Later one more independent supported the government. But two of the G-5 ministers, Madhu Koda, who is a tribal, and Chandra Prakash Chaudhary have already supported Munda's announcement.

Reacting to the statement of Ekka, Chaudhary told reporters: "Ekka is a Christian and it is natural that he will oppose such a bill. But we are in favour that forceful conversion through alluring people is wrong."

Christians number four percent of the state's total population of 26.91 million. Christian missionaries are active in most parts of the state, especially in tribal dominated areas where large-scale conversions are taking place. Tribals constitute 27 percent of the state's population. When only 4%, they try to call the shots. And when christianism starts making up a larger proportion of the populace, Dharmics begin to die.

Second, I am disturbed by some of Shashi's own opinions. He has done his share of what I consider Hindu-bashing. This distresses me, because I am sure he knows -- based on his experience with the UN high commissioner of refugees -- the extent of damage done to Hindus in the subcontinent. The wholesale massacres and ethnic cleansing of millions from the then-East Pakistan in 1971, the forced migration of 400,000 Kashmiri Pandits from their ancestral lands in 1989, the virtual disappearance of Hindus from Pakistan and Bangladesh -- the victims of oppression have been overwhelmingly Hindu.

Today, Sri Lankan Hindus are dying because of the reign of terror unleashed by a Christian-run terrorist group, the LTTE [Images]. Which, incidentally, is eerily similar to the so-called Maoists who terrorise Nepal and 180 districts of India: Circumstantial evidence suggests that they are aligned with and possibly funded by Christian missionaries, and that they owe their allegiance not to China, but to Christian cults.

In Malaysia, Hindu activists have protested severe repression, including forcible conversions and the destruction of scores of temples. In Fiji, there are frequent news reports of desecrations of Hindu temples. The United Progressive Alliance government has never supported any of these overseas Hindus, even though they are keen to ask for their money.

Shashi makes it a point to clarify that he sympathises with the Palestinians. But why does he refuse to be equally vocal in support of Kashmiri Pandits, rotting away in refugee camps 20 years after they were ethnically cleansed? Why does he write a book called Riot in which he squarely blames Hindus for religious riots when the record shows that practically every riot in India has been instigated by the belligerence of Semitic faiths, including massacres and assassinations and burning people alive? And that those who suffer in these riots are predominantly Hindus, given that they not armed, and also given that when the government offers succour, Hindus are always the last to get any benefits?
(Actually, with one exception, only anti-Hindus tend to support Palestinians and not Israelis. One of the few dead giveaways I always found.)

Furthermore, it would be naive of someone with Shashi's intelligence to not see that he is striking at the very root of what makes India a viable nation. I have always been amazed at this 'Kalidasa Syndrome' -- the ability of the Indian chatterati to cut off the branch that they are sitting on. For, it is only because of Hindu tolerance and Hindu values that India is a halfway-viable country.

If this Hinduism were to vanish -- which the Congress and its governments have consistently done their utmost to do -- India would be far worse off. This is not conjecture: we have in front of us what happens to a territory when Hinduism is forcibly exterminated -- that is Exhibit A, Pakistan, the quintessential failed State and epicentre of terrorism, possibly the worst place in the world to live in, certainly if you are not of the ruling class, a Punjabi Mohammedan army officer in the ISI.

Surely, Shashi does not want India to be Pakistan?

The existing system of governance in India is completely antagonistic to Hindus, and seems to be intent on destroying Hinduism. For instance, there was the deliberate and premeditated murder of Swami Laxmananada in Orissa. This has been attributed to some apocryphal Maoists and dismissed as inconsequential, whereas it is clear that those who had the motive -- and who had attacked him previously -- were Christians.

Similarly, Hindu institutions are damaged with no compunctions. But they dare not speak about a Semitic entity. This was demonstrated in Kerala [Images] when the Devaswom minister (an abomination, by the way -- what happened to separation of Church and State?) kept making rude pronouncements about Hindus and Hindu temples like Sabarimala, and everybody thought this quite amusing. But when he made some mild criticism of the Christians, he was forced to eat his words and apologise abjectly.

Three weeks ago, the Adi Sankara temple in Kalady, Kerala, his birthplace, suffered a grievous attack: thieves broke into the sanctum sanctorum and stole a precious emerald Siva linga, which is valued at over Rs 1 crore simply as a gem, and is priceless as a religious artifact. Is Hindu religious sentiment hurt by this? Of course. But did a single English-language newspaper even report this? Of course not. But they thunder 'oppression' if the authorities ask that a Semitic cemetery be moved to widen a road.

Speaking of Adi Sankara -- one of the most important figures in Hinduism, and possibly the person most responsible for its revival in medieval times Kochi's airport was built in a village just a couple of miles away from Kalady. But when it was suggested that the airport should be named after him, the response from some was that it should be named after the beatified Agnese Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, alias M Teresa. Exactly what does the Albanian MT have to do with the area? Nothing whatsoever. It was a red herring. But a 'compromise' was 'worked out' so that the airport would not be named after anybody. The very legitimate Hindu claim was negated by an absurd counter-claim; moral: Hindu sentiments do not count.
(Common christian pattern.)

This sort of automatic knee-jerk derision for Hindu concerns has seen its nadir in the Rama Sethu case and the unbelievable calumny heaped upon the religion by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a partner of the Congress.

In all these cases, the Congress has always sided against the Hindus. The Congress government in Andhra Pradesh is openly supporting proselytisation, with the chief minister's son-in-law himself holding huge rallies to convert Hindus to some Christian cult.

This is secular? Of course not, it is openly communal and anti-secular. It is apartheid, oppression of a powerless numerical majority -- exactly what used to happen to blacks in South Africa [Images].

Shashi, and his children, went to college in America where there are no rules that forbid the majority Christians from owning colleges. But in India, the government actively hinders majority Hindus from owning educational institutions. Similarly, in America, where Shashi has spent most of his life, there is only one set of laws for all people, no separate laws for people of certain religions. Why would Shashi accept a uniform civil code in the US, but not the same in India?

I wish Shashi Tharoor would, in his columns and fiction, and in his political career, actively support the native civilisation of this land and recognise the value it has for the nation and the world.

There is one more thing. The Thiruvananthapuram constituency has been victimised by neglect and outright hostility in the recent past, especially by the Congress' imperious Tamil allies. A major development project to build up Vizhinjam as a container port has been stalled by UPA Transportation Minister T R Baalu, who thought Vizhinjam would hurt his pet port, Tuticorin.

Mr. Natwar Singh told media he fully briefed Mrs. Gandhi after his Iraq visit. He said: âI have not done anything in Iraq without the knowledge of Sonia Gandhi....Not even a leaf moves in the Congress without Mrs. Gandhiâs knowledge.â

If this is true, whether or not she saw his three letters becomes irrelevant. The amount allegedly pocketed by Mr. Andaleeb Sehgal and Mr. Aditya Khanna is a small fraction of the money realized from the vouchers. Where did the rest go? If Congress was the beneficiary it would distance itself from Mr. Sehgal and Mr. Khanna. Mr. Natwar Singhâs letters left a trail. Was that what angered the Congress?

The key question is whether or not Mrs. Sonia Gandhi knew of the oil vouchers enterprise. Until all the money earned from the oil vouchers is traced a final conclusion would be hasty. Even though the Pathak Report exonerated Mr. Natwar Singh from taking money he could not spill the beans. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) leaked to media information about the money trail leading to Mr. Natwar Singhâs son, Jagat. The government therefore can arrest Mr. Jagat Singh at will. Was that why Mr. Natwar Singh first rubbished the PM and later apologized?

The conduct of the opposition parties was odd on two counts. Earlier they described the PM as Mrs. Sonia Gandhiâs pawn. Yet, along with Mr. Natwar Singh, their attack targeted Dr. Manmohan Singh instead of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. Why? The PM is associated most with the Indo-US nuclear deal. Is that why he was targeted? The second odd aspect was that three former foreign ministers â Mr. Natwar Singh, Mr. Yashwant Sinha and Mr. Jaswant Singh â targeted the Indo-US nuclear deal with uncharacteristic vehemence. All three, while in office, pursued a nuclear policy that led up to the nuclear deal. The deviation from past nuclear policy pointed out by them amounts to nitpicking. It does not explain their somersaults.

The question arises: Does their conduct reflect political opportunism or something more sinister? Could they be vulnerable to external pressure? Targeting Dr. Manmohan Singh meant targeting the Indo-US nuclear deal. One example should suffice to indicate possibility of political vulnerability at the highest level. While media reports succeeded in exposing major scandals, a far more damaging allegation continues to be ignored. It is contained in the published writings of Dr. Yevgenia Albats.

Dr. Albats is a Soviet journalist who officially investigated the KGB when the communist regime was still in control. She was appointed as a member of the official KGB Commission set up by President Yeltsin in 1991. She had full access to secret files of the KGB. She authored a book, The State within a State: KGB and Its Hold on Russia. In 1989, she had received the Golden Pen Award, the highest journalism honor in the then-Soviet Union. She was a fellow of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University in 1993 and earned a graduate degree and doctorate from Harvard.

After translating official KGB documents Dr. Albats disclosed in her book that KGB chief Victor Chebrikov in December 1985 had sought in writing from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), "authorization to make payments in US dollars to the family members of Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, namely Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Ms Paola Maino, mother of Sonia Gandhi." CPSU payments were authorized by a resolution, CPSU/CC/No 11228/3 dated 20/12/1985; and endorsed by the USSR Council of Ministers in Directive No 2633/Rs dated 20/12/1985. These payments had been coming since 1971, as payments received by Sonia Gandhi's family and "have been audited in CPSU/CC resolution No 11187/22 OP dated 10/12/1984.â

In 1992 the media confronted the Russian government with the Albats disclosure. The Russian government confirmed the veracity of the disclosure and defended it as necessary for âSoviet ideological interestâ. The Hindu of July 4, 1992 carried this report. Mr. AG Noorani included this information in an article published in The Statesman of January 31, 1998. In December 2001, Dr. Subrmaniam Swamy filed a Writ Petition in the Delhi High Court with relevant KGB photocopies and sought a CBI investigation. In May 2002 the Court ordered CBI to ascertain from Russia the truth of these charges. The CBI stalled for two years and eventually told the Court that without a registered FIR the Russians would not entertain any such query. But why was not an FIR registered? Dr Swamyâs failure to follow this up more vigorously is puzzling.

In November 1991 the respected Swiss magazine, Schweitzer Illustrate, published a report alleging that Rajiv Gandhi had 2.5 billion Swiss francs, equivalent roughly to two billion US dollars, in numbered Swiss bank accounts. The Internet is swamped with allegations against Mrs. Sonia Gandhi detailing cities, foreign banks, account numbers and even names of persons allegedly handling her accounts. Such allegations would easily have been dismissible as scurrilous had there not been the Albats disclosure. Surely Mrs. Sonia Gandhi owes herself and the nation an emphatic and effective rebuttal of the Albats charges? On June 14, 2005 Mrs. Sonia Gandhi visited Russia on a personal invitation by President Putin. There was no need for any minister to accompany her. Yet Mrs. Gandhi sought and got foreign minister Natwar Singh to accompany her. One wonders if Mr. Natwar Singh can shed any light on that visit.

Given the inexplicable conduct of Indiaâs politicians, the public would tend to believe that most are compromised and subject to dictation by one foreign power or another. In the light of this, on this Independence Day, thinking Indians should soberly ask themselves a simple question: Can the people of India be free if their rulers are not?
