Italian news agency ANSA reported that the incident had occurred on Saturday at the beach of Torregaveta, west of Naples, southern Italy, where the two girls had earlier been swimming in the sea with two other Roma girls. Reports said they had gone to the beach to beg and sell trinkets.

Local news reports said the four girls found themselves in trouble amid fierce waves and strong currents. Emergency services responded 10 minutes after a distress call was made from the beach and two lifeguards attended the girls upon hearing their screams.

The Web site of the Archbishop of Naples said the girls were cousins named Violetta and Cristina, aged 12 and 13.

Their bodies were eventually laid out on the sand under beach towels to await collection by police. Photographs show sunbathers in bikinis and swimming trunks sitting close to where the girls' feet can be seen poking out from under the towels concealing their bodies. A photographer who took photos at the scene told CNN the mood among sunbathers had been one of indifference.

Other photos show police officers lifting the bodies into coffins and carrying them away past bathers reclined on sun loungers.

"While the lifeless bodies of the girls were still on the sand, there were those who carried on sunbathing or having lunch just a few meters away," Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported.

Corriere della Sera said that a crowd of curious onlookers that had formed around the bodies quickly dispersed.

"Few left the beach or abandoned their sunbathing. When the police from the mortuary arrived an hour later with coffins, the two girls were carried away between bathers stretched out in the sun."

The incident also attracted condemnation from the Archbishop of Naples, Cardinal Crecenzio Seppe. "Indifference is not an emotion for human beings," Seppe wrote in his parish blog. "To turn the other way or to mind your own business can sometimes be more devastating than the events that occur."

Recent weeks have seen heightened tensions between Italian authorities and the country's Roma minority amid a crackdown by Silvo Berlusconi's government targeting illegal immigrants and talk by government officials of a "Roma emergency" that has seen the 150,000-strong migrant group blamed for rising street crime.

That has provided justification for police raids on Roma camps and controversial government plans to fingerprint all Roma -- an act condemned by the European Parliament and United Nations officials as a clear act of racial discrimination. Popular resentment against Romanies has also seen Roma camps near Naples attacked and set on fire with petrol bombs by local residents.

In a statement published on its Web site, the Italian civil liberties group EveryOne said Saturday's drowning had occurred in an atmosphere of "racism and horror" and cast doubt on the reported version of events, suggesting that it appeared unusual for the four girls to wade into the sea, apparently casting modesty aside and despite being unable to swim.

"The most shocking aspect of all this is the attitude of the people on the beach," the statement said. "No one appears the slightest upset at the sight and presence of the children's dead bodies on the beach: they carry on swimming, sunbathing, sipping soft drinks and chatting."<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

They could be any poor family in an Indian village, or at one of the country's teeming railway stations. This, however, is no ordinary family.

The image is one of the Virgin Mary with Joseph and the baby Jesus in the first “Indianised” version of the Bible, published by the Roman Catholic Church last month.

The New Community Bible is part of an attempt by the Vatican to attract more converts in the world's second-most populous country as congregations decline in Europe and North America.

“I am sure this Bible, made in India and for Indians, will bring the word of God closer to millions of our people, not only Christians,” Oswald Gracias, the Archbishop of Bombay, said at a ceremony on the Bible's release.

Produced by the Society of St Paul, the Bible is the first in this nation of 1.1 billion to be written in simplified English. It features 27 sketches of typical Indian scenes: one shows a family in a slum beneath skyscrapers. Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa also feature in lengthy notes interpreting the text for Indian readers.

The notes even quote Hindu scriptures, such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics, to help to explain Christianity to prospective converts. “We wanted to show the parallels between the themes in the Bible and in Indian religions,” Father Tony Charanghat, a spokesman for the Archbishop, said. “We've put the sacred text in a local context.”

Christianity is reputed to have been brought to India by Thomas the Apostle, “Doubting Thomas”, in AD52, and the first Catholic missionaries came from Portugal in the 16th century. It is now the third-largest religion in India - after Hinduism and Islam - with 24 million followers. Of those, 17 million are Catholics, compared with two million in 1900.

The growth of India's Christian flock has slowed since anti-conversion laws were introduced in seven states under pressure from Hindu nationalists. It is still far faster than in Europe and North America, where the congregation has grown by 2.3 per cent since 2000, compared with 21.4 per cent in Asia, according to the International Bulletin of Missionary Research. “The calculation is that this is the last great missionary front on Earth,” John L. Allen Jr, a Vatican expert based in Rome, said.

The idea of an Indianised Bible was conceived in the 1980s after Bernardo Hurault, a French priest in Chile, produced a simple Spanish version with a commentary. His Christian Community Bible of 1971 has been translated into French, Filipino and Chinese and is used in South America, Africa and Asia.

Indian church leaders wanted more than a translation: they wanted cultural relevance. So they asked 20 experts on Christianity and Indian religions to devise a commentary that would help Indian converts. For example, when Jesus tells disciples to turn the other cheek, the notes compare this to Gandhi's creed of non-violence. Conservatives say that such devices corrupt the Bible's original meaning, while Hindu nationalists say that they amount to blatant proselytising.

A print run of 30,000 of the new Bibles sold out in a week in Bombay. In Delhi, St Paul's bookshop has only a few copies left. “We've had to limit the number of copies to three per person,” Father Stephen Calunkudy, who works at the shop, said. “We've even had Hindus coming in to buy a copy<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

It’s a call that the Andhra Pradesh Government has finally honoured. A pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Bethlehem has been made easy for the Christians in the state.

State Minority Welfare Minister Mohammed Ali Shabbir says, “An exclusive financial corporation will fund and arrange the Christians’ visit to the holy shrines. It’s on the lines of the arrangements made for Muslims going on the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca.”

For this purpose, five Christian religious places have been identified with Jerusalem as the principal stopover. The week-long pilgrimage will have at least 50-100 pilgrims.

With a budget of Rs 2 crore, about 900 poor Christians can expect to visit the Holy Land this financial year. In fact, the first batch of pilgrims is likely to visit Bethlehem in August. The Government is giving a grant of Rs 20,000 for each pilgrim, an amount given to Haj pilgrims as well.

While a date with the divinity has almost been fixed, a certification issued by the mandal revenue officer or tehsildar will identify the eligible pilgrims.

The applicant’s secondary school certificate is yet another tool through which the eligibility will be judged. The pilgrims are to be chosen on the first-come-first-serve basis.

They can apply online and must have a passport valid for two years. To smoothen the process, the state Government has decided to create an exclusive division headed by an IAS officer of the rank of principal secretary in the Department of Minority Welfare.

There’s also a possibility of creation of a new department for the welfare of Christian minorities supervised by the civil servant heading the Department of Minority Welfare.

It may sound too good to be true, but the new entity will not just look at the religious concerns of the Christians but will also take up issues like mass marriages. Couples who marry under this scheme will be given Rs 15,000 to meet the expenses.

Keeping pace with these developments, a similar scheme for Muslims will be taken up by the Wakf Board. Generosity is reigning, with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy allocating Rs 5 crore for the project.

The mantra seems to be simple— make hay while the state Government shines on you. These measures are being taken at a time when numerous complaints pour in from the non-Muslim minorities who state that the Muslims are enjoying benefits under the Department of Minority Welfare while the rest are denied their share of funds proportionate to their population.

Hence, Reddy decided to end the discrimination. The funds for different welfare schemes will be allocated in accordance with the population of the minorities.

According to the 2001 Census, Christians account for about 1.55 per cent of Andhra Pradesh’s population (about 12 lakh), while Muslims form 9.2 per cent of the population (about 70 lakh). There are about 31,000 Sikhs and an equal number of other minorities.

However, the move hasn’t been given a clean chit by all the members of the community. Archbishop Marampudi Joji, head of the Hyderabad Diocese that represents the Catholic Church in Andhra Pradesh, says, “This is a welcome gesture but the Government needs to rework the norms for the pilgrims, especially where they have to prove that they are poor or even Christians by presenting certificates given by the authorities. This could sadly lead to spiritual groupism.”

On the other hand, G. Samuel, president of the state chapter of the All India Christian Council, says, “A separate finance corporation would ensure equitable distribution of Rs 127 crore allocated for the welfare of minorities.”

Sociologists contend that demanddriven strategy may lead to sharper divides. But then with elections fast approaching, political expediency may take precedence over political reasoning.

Now about that spiritually devoid cult of Christianity: the "dalits" should examine its history and then decide what fate eventually awaits brown people. All the colonizers and missionaries with their attendant armies of "Christ's Soldiers": were they brown or white? And the oppressed: were they brown or white? While discrimination among christianity (a "religion" that has no value for you once you sign up as a "believer"; unless you have a lot of money which needs to me milked from you) is increasing.

DINDIGUL: Following a dispute between two communities in Perumalkovilpatti village near Ambathurai, members of one community have deserted their houses and taken refuge in a temple.

There are 200 Vanniar Hindu families and 300 Christian families in the village and the temple of Kaliamman is situated in the heart of the village. Both communities have been at loggerheads regarding the celebration of the temple festival, for a long time.

Meanwhile, it was agreed that from the current year onwards, the temple festival would be celebrated without troubling the other community. But a dispute surfaced regarding the stationing of a chariot during the festival.

There had been similar disputes earlier and police had stopped the celebrations. But it was decided that this year, the temple festival should be celebrated, but due to another dispute, the move was abandoned.

District Collector R Vasuki convened a peace meeting on Saturday inviting representatives from both communities, but no agreement was reached.

Hence, the Collector proceeded to the village and held discussions. The authorities earmarked the spot for keeping the chariot and also the route for the procession.

Additional security was also assured. However, members of a community left their houses on Monday night and camped in the village temple.

Bible with reference to Hindu scriptures making waves

An 'Indianised' Bible with references to the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Manusmriti and drawings of a turbaned Joseph and sari-clad Mary with baby Jesus in her arms, is making waves in Kerala [Images].

This is an unprecedented venture as Indian scriptures Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and Mausmriti have been used in a Bible by way of interpretations to biblical passages for the first time, says Catholic church spokesperson Father Paul Thelekat. This is an attempt to make contextual reading and understanding.

There are 24 line drawings, including those of mosque, temple and church with slippers outside, by the late Christopher Coelho.

The Mumbai-based publishing house, St Pauls, which brings out religious books, has come out with the new Indian Bible, which also has references to Meerabai, Mahatma Gandhi [Images], and Rabindranath Tagore in the interpretations of biblical passages, Father Thelekat told PTI.

As far as Catholics are concerned, they have to live and interpret their Christian faith and scriptures within the given culture. So they have to understand and interpret the culture, he said.

The New Community Bible is a revised edition of the popular Christian Bible translated by Late Bernardo Hurault, published from the Philippines. About 30 scholars have worked on it from 1980 and made the interpretations which are published at the bottom part of the Bible, Fr Thekekat said.

The text of the Bible is the accepted Catholic version, whose interpretations are made with an Indian cultural perspective.

Thiruvananthpuam Archbishop Sosa Pakiam, in his preface to the Bible, says a unique feature of the New Bible is that it has many references to the spiritual message and biblical references to that of spiritual message and biblical values found in the scriptures of other great Indian religions.

The article, quoting Fr Augustine Kanachikuzhy, general editor of the new Bible, says the references and quotations used in the Bible from non Christian scriptures "does not imply in any way, the Indian scriptural terms are parallel to Biblical terms or that the parallel references are saying the same thing as the Biblical text."

Thelekat said while interpreting Treasure in Heaven of Mt 6:19.21, "This concept is found a classical expression in the Bhagavad Gita's call to disinterested action: 'Work alone is your proper business never the fruits it may produce.'" (2:47), or while commenting on the third appearance of Jesus to disciples (John 21:1.14)... "The Lord ever stands on the shores of our life every moment and every age, every day and every night he comes, comes, ever comes' (Gitanjali XLV).

Indian texts are used to interpret not only the New Testament, but also the Old Testament. The deluge story of the Book of Genesis is interpreted with reference of such stories in Mesopotamia and Satapath Brahmana (1.8.1-10) and
Mahabharata [Images].

In passages where the Biblical interpretation differs from the Indian scriptures, that fact is also made clear, Thelekat said.

Over such 70 references to non Christian texts have been made in the Bible and 30 scholars participated in making the commentary, Fr Thelekat said.

"An attempt has been made to give a Bible which is more relevant for India. There is nothing added or subtracted from the text of the Bible, which has been reproduced as such," Fr Thelekat added.

Bishop Thomas Dabre, chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, gave the official no objection certificate for publication of the Bible.

SatyaDeepam, a fortnightly highlighting Christian values, quoting Bishop Dabre, said, "We cannot simply have a re-reproduction of the Bible. People must be able to assimilate and appreciate the Bible. The texts of the Bible must come alive."

The Bible throws light on the non Christian texts, for example, the 'Gayatri Mantra', which is a prayer addressed to the Sun god. "But actually for us Christ is the light. We can use it as a prayer of divine light, which illumines the human mind," the bishop said.

Bishop Dabre said there could be resistance to such introductions.

"For so many centuries we have not been able to read the text of the sacred scripture without Indian traditions at the background. Our sacred text also must become meaningful to Indians of different religions. It will help to project our Bible in their context," he said.

Father Thekelat said this is a positive step to understand in a positive manner, the sacred scriptures and literary texts of the land. Even St Paul quoted the local poet, he said.

A Bible can be printed only after a non-objection certificate and express permission to print is given by the Mumbai archbishop.

Beacons of Hindu spiritual Mission

Let me begin this piece by narrating a real life incident that unfolded before me. Because it will illustrate how the UPA government has successfully created a situation in the country that has the potential to undermine Hinduism in a big way.

Suchitra and Sujata are cousins. They are adivasis from Jharkhand working as maid servants in a South Delhi colony. Suchitra is married and has a son attending school. Her husband left her many years ago, and she is single-handedly educating her son. He is in ninth standard in a Delhi government school near Shapur Jat. She works in three houses to eke out a living and send her son to school. The boy too works part-time in a grocery shop after school hours to supplicate their income. Sujata also is a ninth standard student in the same school and she too works in a house after school hours. She lives with her aunt who a few years ago became a Christian because her husband works as a peon in a missionary school. Now the girl is also a Christian because she accompanies her aunt every Sunday to the local church.

Last week Sujata along with other students were told by the class teacher to get their religion certificates to prove that they are Christian or Muslim so that they could claim special benefits including pocket money being offered by the government. <b>Sujata was excited, she realised being a Christian is cool.</b> But her classmate, Suchitra’s son Suman was sad. He said he deserved government support more because he lived in exceedingly pitiable condition than Sujata. His mother works 18 hours a day. They live in a servant’s quarter with a PSU executive and for that accommodation she has to work the whole day and night in the house. In between when her house owner is out for work she finds time to go to two other houses to do cleaning job by which she makes some extra money.

Sujata got a certificate to claim that she is a tribal Christian. Now she can avail the financial assistance from the central government. The benefits she will be getting for the first time. Because the Sachar Committee report has been implemented by the back door. The benefits from the church and now from the school are tempting for Suchitra and her son to become Christians. But she still continues to be a Hindu. I asked her if she ever thought of converting. She said, if she converts, it will make her and her son’s life better but her father will not let her enter the village back home. This is so in all Vanvasi villages. A convert becomes an outcaste unless his community is in a majority. Christians have now Indianised their God, to deceive the gullible villagers. They don’t insist on Christian names. They have even adopted some of the Hindu customs and rituals to again beguile the poor adivasis. And they offer free education, medical facilities, even career gain. Now the government is also offering them all possible help, which they call affirmative action, so that Hindus will one day stop claiming that they are the majority and that this is a Hindu country. The harvest of soul and harvest of terror have become commonplace under UPA.

It is here that our Hindu organisations, temples and institutions become the beacons of hope, sustenance, national pride and most significantly sentinels of patriotism. Bhakti is a defensive mechanism and an offensive weapon. Magnificent institutions, charismatic personality and spiritual glow of many of our Hindu saviours bestowed them with huge appeal among all sections of society. By interpreting the scriptures, the Hindu way of life, the Gita, as the most modern and scientific technique of the new age they construct nationalist fervour and raison d’etre for the Hindu resurgence.

In this Independence Day special we track some of these great men and their mission. Unlike the missionaries and the venom-spewing terror merchants their appeal is universal, their message is for peace and prosperity and they serve humans as a whole. They are winning hearts not harvesting souls for demographic invasion.

But for such men, the shenanigans of the UPA would have produced faster result. For today, for a Hindu to remain a Hindu— other than his tradition-loving family elders, the good work of thousands of our iconic spiritual leaders who have become cult figures of universal appeal and the great service activities they have taken up in the length and breadth of the country—there is nothing left. It is a disadvantage in a professional sense to be a Hindu.

The torch-bearers of Hindu spiritual mission have made their work very large and growing—all encompassing, reformist and service oriented—but all these put together is like a drop in the ocean. The challenges are so daunting. There is no political or administrative incentive to be a Hindu in Hindustan. Are we fighting a losing battle? I get hundreds of hate mail, many of them from serious Christian and Muslim Organiser readers and they tell me that they have already succeeded, that the Hindu has no political future.

No matter how educated or how liberal or intellectual one might be, but at some level it hurts. People from the same social background, steeped in identical social condition but some are preferred for special treatment because they have converted. They have said goodbye to their ancestral faith, and vowed their loyalty to the alien. Because they are not Hindu. In this land of the Hindus being Hindu has become a handicap.

Swami Dayananda Saraswati in a touching interview tells our readers, “India is the only country in the world where the majority community is discriminated against.” He had given this interview to a leading South Indian daily. The editor of the paper after getting the interview corrected by Swamiji returned it saying that he cannot publish it because the Swamiji was too outspoken.

It may sound strange but the fact is that the anti-Hindu utterances have become fashionable. Anything pro-Hindu is communal, fanatic, abusive and what not. The media is hugely funded by foreign, Christian and Islamic money and they are expected to be anti-Hindu. During the debate in the Lok Sabha on July 21 and 22, every single Muslim leader who spoke for the Confidence Motion recounted the number of benefits Muslims have got under UPA. They were conspicuous in their unconcern for national issues. All that mattered was what benefited the Muslims. The crowning shame was Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Farooq from the Valley lecturing to Hindus on secularism and defending their offensively parochial stand denying land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board. For the last 40 days the Hindus in Jammu have been protesting as one man but the centre was forced to move only when supplies to Kashmir valley got disturbed.

The decision of the Supreme Court allowing the Andhra Congress government quota on religious lines will prove yet another encroachment on Hindu rights. The Constitution does not allow reservations on religious lines. The court has now allowed to factor in the four per cent Muslim reservation into the Hindu OBC quota, again depriving the Hindus of their share. There is no need any more for the Hindus to prove secular. What Hindus have to prove is that they are concerned, caring, political Hindus.

I do not believe you will meet many of this generation who do not still revere although perhaps in a secret way our great gurus. You cannot grow in this country and remain impervious to what is happening around us, how systematically our icons are being demolished, how our pride as a nation is being cynically diluted. Every country has to define itself. It has to underline its core values and concerns. That is what every secular country does.

In the biography of J.F. Kennedy, Theodore C. Sorensen, who was special counsel to the late President of America notes, when he was thinking of applying for a job with the new Senator he was informed by a friend, “…Joe Kennedy hasn’t hired a non-Catholic in fifty years.” At another place he recounts that though Kennedy was not an orthodox Catholic and did not prefer Catholics in his staff and not even deeply religious, “he faithfully attended Mass each Sunday, even in the midst of fatiguing out-of-state travels when no voter would know whether he attended services or not.” The writer was explaining how it was important for a politician in America to convincingly prove his religious identity to be successful. The situation is the same even today. The manner in which the presidential campaign is progressing, illustrates this. It is only in India again as the Swamiji emphasised that in politics Hindu identity is sought to be made into a disadvantage.

The power of the vote bank is vastly exaggerated. Compared to the strength of the nationalist forces the anti-Hindus are in a minority. The tyranny of circumstances should not blind our vision.

Here we are looking at our strength. In most cases we have approached the organisations to give us a brief sketch of their philosophy and activity. We have tried to make it as authentic as possible without mixing it with our interpretations. Generally the articles have been written by authorised office-bearers of the organisations concerned. This is a new approach. There are hundreds of organisations in the country and abroad who work among Hindus helping them protect their faith. These organisations work silently among the labourers, slum-dwellers, adivasis and in the remotest corners offering hope and succour to millions of men and women to stand on their feet.

We have not been able to report on all of them. What we have here is a few of such organisations, perhaps more known of them. We have the constraint of space and resources to bring the entire gamut of Hindu resistance under one cover. But we have a sufficiently representative canvas. We hope this will inspire more such efforts to raise Hindu consciousness in the country.

The Catholic Christian Convents of Central Kerala

The Central Kerala, particularly, the Kottayam district is the highest Christian populated [8, 95,000 or 45.83%] area and is the Vatican of India. It is the bastion of Christian vested interests also. In the recent Assembly elections also this Christian upper hand reflected well, and to a certain extent it helped to save the face of Congress led front [UDF]. A sizable number of priests and nuns works all over India are haling from this particular area. So it is the nuclei of India's Christian conversion programme [India for Christ Programme]. Above all, the contemporary European Church is facing spiritual crisis due to its youths reluctance to ordain as priests and nuns and the Churches of Central Kerala solves that through the export of the same. Through this thumbnail sketch of the present-day Kerala Church, this article is intended to draw the attention of the esteemed readers on the malady of those Christian girls who destined to be as nuns or 'bride of the Jesus', within the four walls of the convents.

For the last two decades the disastrous end of young girls who embraced the nun-hood turned to be a news item in the column of the vernacular newspapers of Kerala. So far a dozen such news catches the headings of the press. Of the first is the pathetic end of 19 year old student cum nun Sr. [Sister] Abhaya of Pius X Convent in the heart of the town, Kottayam. She belongs to a lower middle class Catholic family of Kottayam district. On 1992 March 27th, her body was found in the well of the said convent. Her father Thomas Areekkara and mother Leelamma raised serious doubts about the death of their daughter Beena [changed her name in to Sr. Abhaya after taking the veil]. They categorically say that her daughter has any raison d'être to commit suicide.

The dawn of 27th March was a sad day to the students and teachers of BCM college of Kottayam, where Sr. Abhaya was a student, who met disastrous end in the Pius X convent. The Christian police officer who rushed to the spot was given priority to destroy the evidences, instead of collecting evidences related to her suspicious death. No doubt it was with the political blessings from above. Later ups and downs in the investigations are much evident to justify this doubt. The growing economic and political power of Christians [particularly the Church] in Kerala considerably influenced the course of its investigation. The parents of the deceased nun and the philanthropists of Kottayam continued their legal battle to book the culprit, miserably failed. The Christian CBI officer who was in charge of investigation resigned from the office while investigation was in progress. The suspected priest and the mother of the convent who ought to be the prime witness in the case were sent to Vatican by the Church authorities and subsequently they became the citizens of the Papal State. Even though the government of India has a healthy diplomatic relation with Vatican, the investigating agencies miserably failed to extradite them for interrogation.

The story of the disastrous deaths of nuns in the convents of Kerala not ends with the mysterious death of Sr. Abhaya. It was the beginning of a new turn in the history of church sponsored criminalism in Kerala. Subsequently, after two weeks, another nun called Sr. Mercy found dead in a waterless pond in the compound of the convent at Mukkootuthara in the Kottayam district. The all-powerful church hierarchy was able to manipulate the course of investigation from its bud and write-off the death as an accident of drowning. The story of the disastrous death coming out from the convents of Central Kerala is shrouded in mystery and equal or more than that in the 19th century detective novel Dracula of Bram Stocker.

Another scapegoat of the 'convent-death' is Sr. Paulcy of the Snehagiri [Hill of Love] Convent of Palai near Kottayam. It was on 17th May 2000. She died of the consumption of poisoned meet food. No other inmates of the convent is affected with food poison, is the paradox to be answered. But the convent authorities had given obituary advertisement in leading vernacular newspaper that Sr. Paulcy [35] died of heart attack. Even though she lost her life in the night of 17th May, the matter was informed to her parents who reside very near to the convent only after eight O'clock in the morning of the next day. Parents of the unfortunate nun raised doubts about the death and the police intervened. The post-mortem report negated the Convent hierarchy's argument of the 'heart attack'. The sister and mother of the deceased nun recollected the story which told her a few weeks back that, "a lot of foreign remittance is flowing to the Convent and she happened to see the details of the remittance caused the wrath of the Mother superior of the Convent and she scolded a lot her". [2nd largest circulated daily of Kerala; Matrubhoomi Daily, Kottayam, 25th June 2000]. Any way the story of mysterious deaths of nuns clearly giving some clue that most of the convents in the Central Kerala are not only the abodes nuns but also the seat of mysterious transactions including the violation of the Commandments 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th. [For the details of the quoted Commandments, see Exodus, Chapter XIX, Aphorisms 2 – 17].

After a couple of months, Sr. Sofi, a 27 year old nun of Velliyappally Valakkattu Convent of Palai became the next victim of "Convent Tragedy". Her body found in the well of the convent. As usual police has registered an FIR. But the investigation not yet reached any shore of conclusion. It is quite natural that a prominent leader of Kerala politics and his party is the product of the Catholic Church and he belongs to Palai. So in all the church/priest/nun related criminal offences are always shrouding in obscurity. Hence the unnatural death of Sr. Sofi also got the same destiny.

The story of the destiny of Sr. Anjo has yet another dimension. A 22 year old nun found solace in suicide on 29th December 2003. She was an intelligent and smart girl who opt the path of "Bride-ship of the Christ" owing to the compulsion of the family and parents. She was the inmate of SH Convent, Chanjodi near Kottaym. To the Anjo the life in the monotonous convent was boring and she thought about the deliverance. The parents and the Convent authorities insisted her to continue in veil. She lost all hopes of deliverance and finally she fond solace in hanging on the fan. [Feature from Keralasabdham Weekly,- a prominent Malayalam news weekly - 19th January 2003, pp 12, 13].

The tragic death Sr. Ancy, 32, of Bethany Convent of Ranny-Perunnadu was the story of yet another unfortunate who found [it is said] her destiny in the well of the convent. She was a teacher of the school run by the church. Her dead body found in the well in the early morning. But the convent authorities informed the police only after 10'O clock in the morning. This response of the convent authorities was doubtful. The police investigation lost its momentum elsewhere in the deluge of time. Once again the name of one more nun, Sr. Ancy, was also written in the list of Christ's Brides, which appears, on the walls of paradise.

Now the story of unnatural deaths in the convents is not at all news to an ordinary Malayalee. Even though, it is genuine to bring the news of the tragic end of the last but not least nun. On 23rd June 2006 Sr. Lisa of Saint Francis Clarist Convent of Iravuchira, a hamlet near Kottayam, who ends her life in the convent by consuming poison. The relatives and guardians of the deceased Sr. Lisa strongly believe that her decision of ending life is the outcome of the torture and humiliation that met by her from the convent authorities. [Janmabhoomi Daily – a prominent Hindu news paper - Kottayam, 26th June 2006].

The above mentioned are only some identical incidents from a dozen convent tragedies that took place in the recent past. Those politicians who cast their covetous eyes on the vote banks of the Church have no sufficient will to ensure justice to the souls of the ill-fated women who forced to take veil. The parents of the unfortunate Sr. Abhaya's fight for justice not yet produced any fruits. The power seeking politician's interference in the investigation turned down as the stumbling block behind the way to ensure justice to the soul of Sr. Abhaya.

The wretched girls who fettered in the convents are hailing from economically poor Christian families of Kerala. The wealth and religion are not traveling together in the practical experience/case of Christianity in the west. The contemporary European Christian experience substantiates this universal truth. The rich European region is now reluctant to contribute priests and nuns to cater the demands of the Church. Now this gap is filled from less prosperous countries of Asia and Africa. The Church in Kerala is booking profit out of the economic backwardness that still exists amongst the Christian families and thus recruits girls from such families as nuns. Usually girls are enrolled in to the bandwagon of nunnery at the tender ages. The compulsions of the parents who are allured by the Church are grazing its lass to the 'heavenly prisons' [convents]. One cannot deny the role of convents schools to motivate young and innocent girls to the 'slaughter houses' [convents].

The Syrian Christian community with immense wealth, celebrating their marriage ceremonies with the pomp of "Maha Kumba Melas", is the real culprit behind the plight of poor girls behind the bars of convents. The seven-digit dowry and celebration turned as a nightmare to the poor Christian families. So the economically weak in the Christian community can't imagine marriage of their daughters. Kottayam, a small town of 25 lakhs of people and five Cathedrals with Christian economic dominance, has one and a half dozen 'five star jewelers' shows the extent of the pompous of richness of Syrian Christians. Now money is a deciding factor in this community. So, economically weak Christians are gearing to compete with the rest through acquiring money. As a result they are compelling their lasses to opt either to nursing or to nunnery. The convent is dam cheap as compared to nursing. So the economically too poor parents are forced to herd their damsels to the convents. Therefore, the Kerala's Syrian Christian Church is the chief contributor of the 95% of nuns required for the proselytism activities of the Churches in India.

The allegations both moral and material are the universal ghost haunting the Christendom all over the world. One Catholic Priest from India [Kerala] got four months jail term for sexually abusing a twelve year old laity girl in USA. The convicted Rev. Francis X Nelson [38] hailing from Kerala served as the Confidential Secretary Kottar [Tamilnadu] Bishop Leon Tharmaraj. [The New Indian Express, Kochi, 28 March 2003]. Broklyn [USA] Diocese Bishop has forced to transfer 42 files related to sexual abuses involved by twenty five Catholic priests to the authorities during the trial of the Rev. Nelson's case. [Janmabhoomi Daily, Kochi, 28 March 2003]. The Vatican recently confessed that priests and nuns under the Roman Catholic Church in several countries including India and Italy involving in sexual relations. La Republica daily of Italy reports that priests and nuns involved rape, conception and abortion are frequently reported from various regions. [Janmabhoomi Daily, Kochi, 22 March 2001]. Priests involvements in murder and other subversive activate are increasing at a high rate.

It is believed that the Catholic Priests and Nuns are chronic bachelors and chronic spinsters respectively who practices Bramachariay/Sanyasaa Ashram/life of hermit are using high calorie fat food is one among several reasons of the increase of sexual appetite. This is the main reason for the sex related crimes also. If the church is interested to maintain the purity of the concept of hermit life amongst its soldiers of proselytism, it is better to follow Hindu practices of vegetarianism and yoga. Otherwise papal effort to maintain hermitage in the Church order will be a futile effort.

Let us return to Kerala scenario. In September 2001 St. Alphonsa Church at Kolayad near Kannur was ransacked by some [the discontented laity] people. Those who are lamenting of Sanga Parivar attack on churches in other states followed lukewarm attitude towards this attack. This was happened so, because of the frustration that brewing inside the church. Fr. Job Chittilappally, a 71 year old padre of St. Varaprasada Matha Church, near Chalakudi in Trichur district found dead with stab injuries in August 2004. The Church has shown no enthusiasm in booking the culprit, is noteworthy. Earlier for petty problems nuns and priests along with laity display their might in the street. But in this case there were no such road shows. All these are the signs of the ever-deteriorating morale space of the Church and Christianity all over.

So here comes the question of social justice. The ill-fated girls who destined to the hellish suffering within the four walls of convents have the right to live. The government and constitution has moral and legal right to ensure the right of life of them. So the practice of recruiting girls to the convents before the growth of 'wisdom teeth' must go. The recruitment to the profession of nunnery at the tender age is not different from girl-foeticide. So it must be treated as criminal act and those who involve, with out considering the social status of person, must brought before the law. If criminal laws are not sufficient to deal with, it should make further laws to book the culprits. If we fail to do something in this direction it may lead to severe social problems similar to that generated by the rotten Devadasi system of medieval South India.
