Playing with fire

This refers to the editorial "Playing with fire in U.P." (March 11). Our politicians are shortsighted and do not see beyond votes. It is no surprise then that they mix religion with politics. They do not realise how dangerous it is to pull the delicate strings of secularism that bind the people of all communities together. What is the difference between terrorists and politicians who stoke the embers of communal fire for their vested interests?

MANGALORE: Jehadi elements are systematically targeting the economies the world over through terror acts such as bomb blasts, Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Praveen Togadia has said.

Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, Dr. Togadia said: "it's high time Hindus and Christians came together to defeat the jehadis. Only Christians in the West or Hindus here cannot defeat the jehadis. If we have to survive, take our economies ahead, it's high time that Vatican (Christians) and Kashi (Hindus) came together and took on the elements spreading terror," he noted.

Blaming Pakistan for the acts of terror in India, Dr. Togadia said: "without local support Pakistan cannot do anything. It will be difficult for Pakistan to carry out bomb blasts in Delhi, Bangalore, Kashi or any other place in India without their support."

"Every effort should be made to detect the network of supporters of the jehadis. Otherwise, there will be more attacks and the economy of the country will suffer," he said.

Dr. Togadia said it was on this day in 1993 that Mumbai was rocked by serial blasts, and now the terrorists seemed to have set sights on Udupi and Tirupati. They also have designs on commercial, educational and religious institutions and infrastructure such as bridges and high-rise buildings, the VHP leader said.

Centre attacked

Accusing the Union Government of communalising each and every aspect of life through its acts, Dr. Togadia said it had failed to take the jehadi elements head-on.

"Instead of fighting terrorists, they have communalised unemployment by giving job reservation for Muslims. They have communalised education by providing reservation to Muslim youths in Aligarh Muslim University."

Survey

A survey of Muslims was being done in the country. They were communalising every sphere, he charged.

He said even Bangalore, which was hitherto considered safe, had not been spared by terrorists.

If Bangalore was not safe, no city in India was safe, he said.

Asked if his call for joint efforts against terrorism was a sign of weakness on part of Hindus, Dr. Togadia said when he had struck a strident position against the West in the past, they were not affected by major acts of terror.

Under attack from secular parties, the Sangh Parivar and BJP on Monday closed ranks and rallied behind L K Advani on his proposed controversial 'National Integration Yatra' from April six announced in the wake of the Varanasi bomb blasts.

Refuting reports and speculation of differences within the Parivar on the Yatra, RSS Chief K S Sudarshan, in a strongly-worded statement from the Sangh Headquarters in Nagpur, said there was "no question of RSS opposing" the twin yatras being undertaken by Advani and Party President Rajnath Singh "with the objective of making people aware about the unbridled Muslim appeasement and the threat it posed to national unity and integrity." 

He recalled that the recent RSS General Council meeting in Nagpur had passed resolutions on the dangers posed by minority appeasement to national unity and integrity and said "any effort to create public awareness in this regard will have our support."

Advani had announced the twin yatras in the wake of the Varanasi blasts on March 7 trigerring speculation that it was a unilateral decision which did not enjoy the support of either the party leaders or the Saffron fraternity. VHP leaders Ashok Singhal and Acharya Giriraj Kishore had publicly expressed their reservations on the Yatra.

Meanwhile, in Delhi, in the first public statement in Advani's defence, BJP Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Vijay Kumar Malhotra asserted that the party was "united" on the Yatra and alleged that the "so-called secularists" have become "jittery and unnerved" by the proposed programme.

As I see it Muslims all over the world cannot live in harmony with so called "infidels" wherever they have chosen to settle. India is a classic example of a polarised nation that has a large population of Muslims-where the Muslims are really a minority, but fast becoming a majority.

I do not see a Hindu India existing for long as the Muslim population is rising faster than the Hindu population and with increasing political bias towards the minority-India is shooting itself in the foot.

Islam and democracy cannot go hand in hand as the very tenets of Islam reject a secular state--you can see in virtually all the Islamic countries on the planet--they are either dictatorships or ruled by archaic practices.

Islam will always clash with a democratic process and President Bush is absolutely right in pointing out the failings of Islamic nations all over the world! Human rights issues, women's rights and basic human civility with peaceful modes of existence are lacking in Islam.

I do not think anyone can say that Islam is a peaceful religion, when it literally condones violence against "infidels". Whenever anyone dares criticise Islam death-threats are issued and the whole concept of civil dialogue goes out of the window.

The Islamic diaspora is moving backwards when the whole world is moving forward-it is becoming more violent, suppressive and insecure. The recent publications of the cartoons just shows how insecure Muslims feel about their own religion.

It is a shame that the world is being held hostage by a religion that will not and cannot progress with the times.

If any one is noticing there is zilch progress in aprehending the terrorists who set of the blasts. After the initial 'encountering' some handy suspects (who were most probably bad anyway) and some interesting sketches the police seems to have drawn blanks. The bigger blank is the political leaders who are afraid to name any origins for the suspects lest they have to take action. The DDM the less said the better. So any updates welcome.

Looks like the policy of the UPA was to reverse the anti-terrorist network and structure.
Their policy of not being active in intelligence is also a reversal of policy.

If this is their way to differentiate their govt with any other govt then the country is under real danger. Is this policy dictated by some other country or super power?
Is there negotiation going on between non-communist leftist and Uncle in the back of the people of India and the govt.

Intelligence apparatus is busy spying political parties or RSS. Two days back hoax drama at RSS media center and taping of opposition party is core objective of IB.

Next day encounter was just a part of attrition process. Within 2 hours they named them as part of some terrorist group and which completed govt role and pacified public in current UPA eyes. Same was done by Advani after Mumbai blast.

Police knows who are behind but they are too hot to be touched, they have complete govt support. UPA objective is to stay in power and they don't want to touch those element. So slowly this will cool down till next low intensity installment.

That Gujarat figures high on the terrorists' hitlist is evident not only from the Akshardham attack but also from the fact that the attack on the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) at Bangalore on December 28 also had an Ahmedabad connection. A team of the Bangalore Police visited Ahmedabad last month and after permission from the POTA court met the accused in the ISI conspiracy case in the Sabarmati Central Jail. The team had questioned seven persons, including Asghar Ali, a LeT terrorist accused of killing former Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya, and Maulana Nasirudin.

Gujarat Police is also in touch with its Delhi counterparts after it was learnt that LeT's Abu Hazafa, who was involved in the Akshardham attack had emerged as the mastermind of the Delhi blasts.,

Gulam Yazdani alias Naved, who hailed from Hyderabad and was killed in a police encounter outside Delhi hours after the Varanasi blasts, was also an absconder in an ISI conspiracy case here. The police strongly believe that the Varanasi blasts and the explosion at the Ahmedabad railway station on February 19 are the handiwork of the same group as the modus operandi is the same.

2) No clue about Bangalore blast.
3) No clue about Varanasi blast .
4) All caught LeT or Harkat terrorist are Indian born but Indian Police use Pakistan terrorist groups name. Are they telling us that Indian and Pakistan terrorist groups are completely merged?
5) Also, it means, they are no more Kashmiri mujahadeen group but Pan-Islamic Jihadist group.

Chargesheet filed in Paharganj blast case QUOTEChargesheets in the other two October 29 blasts last year -- at Sarojini Nagar and Govindpuri -- have already been filed.

The chargesheet filed on Saturday in the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Seema Maini names Tariq Ahmed Dar and Rafiq Shah as prime accused. Both had been named as prime accused in the other two blast cases as well.

According to the chargesheet, the serial explosions were intended by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists to spread panic.

"This incident is caused knowingly by some terrorist organisation with the intention to wage war against the Government to spread a sense of fear in the people in general and with the intention to cause serious injuries to kill people," the chargesheet said.

Mohammad Hussain Fazli, who was named in the FIR and is at present lodged in Gurgaon's Bhondsi jail, is not named in the chargesheet. He had been named in the FIR for transferring money to the other two.

Has the democratic, secular and resilient Indian state failed its own people? Why does India seem like a soft state, an easy target for terrorists out to destroy the secular fabric of the country? What is it that we lack in responding to terrorism when we keep claiming ours is a more inclusive and comprehensive, proactive strategy to deal with terrorism as against the reactive and militarised counter-terrorism policies of the United States and its allies, who have clearly been successful in containing terrorism in their territories?

Varanasi blasts: Police to go for new sketchesQUOTEClueless about the perpetrators of the twin blasts in Varanasi even two weeks after the incident, Uttar Pradesh police chief Yashpal on Tuesday said fresh sketches of the suspects could be obtained by taking the help of some renowned artists.

Singh said that the sketches of the two artistes, released earlier by Varanasi SSP, "has not given us any clue about the real culprits."

"Services of some renowned artistes could now be obtained for making fresh sketches of the suspects so that the real culprits could be arrested and the case worked out", he said.

The DGP told a television channel that the earlier sketches of the two suspects behind the blasts were released "hurriedly" by the SSP.

"This was a fault on the part of SSP (Varanasi). Perhaps he has realized it also. He should not have done it so fast. He should have verified it in much more detail."

On the basis of the sketches, two persons, whose faces resembled with them, were arrested from Hardoi, UP, but they were let off after sustained interrogation as they were found innocent, Singh said.

"There is only one artist who is dependable. He is from Mumbai. I had particularly asked the SSP to call him and get the sketches made by that very artist. But unfortunately, there was some hurry which was not very useful for our investigation," the DGP said.

"It has not affected the investigation but it has not helped us in any way," he added.

Singh said investigation into the blasts by the Special Task Force personnel and team of senior officials was going on and hoped they would be able to crack the case soon.

There is need for the ulema to go beyond fatwa and show the right path to misguided Muslims, says Bulbul Roy Mishra

Within a few days of the Varanasi blasts, the fatwa of Maulana Khalid Rashid of Dar-ul-Itfa Firangi Mahal, one of the most respected seminaries in the country, made an encouraging beginning by condemning the terrorists. The above condemnation came in response to a query, posted to the seminary on March 9 (two days after the blasts) by one Sajjid Umar, a 32-year- old businessman, as to Islam's view on attacks on religious places killing several innocents.

The Maulana's signed fatwa displayed at the seminary quoted from Ayats 32 and 107 of the holy Quran to denounce terrorism, categorically stating that there was "absolutely no room for terrorism in Islam and the murder of one innocent person amounted to the murder of the entire humanity". 

Several Muslim religious organisations from Hyderabad and Mumbai and Muslim activists from all over India have since hailed the Maulana's fatwa. They have also asked the terrorist outfits to drop holy words that represent the Prophet or His attributes from the names of their organisations such as Lashkar-e-Qahar (Army of the Subduer) that owned the blasts, or for that matter Jaish-e-Mohammed (Army of Mohammed), Lashkar-e-Toiba (Army of Righteous), etc. The last two organisations are known to be active in Jammu & Kashmir.

Notable among the Indian clerics who joined the Maulana in condemning terrorists were Maulana Mufti Mohammad Mastan Ali, head of Jamiat-ul-Mominath, Moulana Syed Shah Badruddin Qadri Al-Jeelani, President of Jamiat-ul Mashaiq al-Hind and All India Sunni Ulema Board, Abdur Rahim Qureshi, Secretary of All-India Muslim Personal Law Board and the head of Tameer-e-Millat.

The fatwa of the above clerics after the Varanasi blasts, however, was by no means the first of its kind in the world. The Fiqh Council of North America issued a similar fatwa on July 28, 2005, in the light of the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah, emphatically laying down the following three mandates:

First, all acts of terrorism targeting civilians are haram (forbidden) in Islam.

Second, it is haram for a Muslim to cooperate with any individual or group that is involved in any act of terrorism or violence. And third, it is the civic and religious duty of Muslims to cooperate with law enforcement authorities to protect the lives of all civilians.

The above fatwa has since been endorsed by 145 Muslim organisations, mosques and imams in the US. It is the second injunction that is most important in Indian context. While there is no doubt about the noble intention underlying those fatwas, let us examine their efficacy from terrorists' perspective.

A fatwa is taken as a legal pronouncement in Islam issued by a religious scholar known as mufti. Since Islam has no centralised priestly hierarchy, the binding nature of a fatwa is considerably diluted. It may thus be taken as a mere opinion of a religious scholar in response to a query, which may or may not be accepted by others, like it has been in the case of Maulana Khalid Rashid in India. Fatwa may also work as a decree like the death sentence to Salman Rushdie issued by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989 or the fatwa of Osama bin Laden declaring war against the US.

It goes without saying, the fatwa issued by Indian clerics was not of the same tenor or accent as the fatwas of Ayatollah and Laden, or even those issued by Indian clerics urging Muslims to vote for a certain political party. Therefore, it is doubtful whether said fatwa will have any impact whatsoever on terrorists. As a matter of fact, the fatwa of July 28, 2005, of the US clerics had no impact on Islamic terrorists, as is evident from numerous responses on the website with contra-citations from Quran.

To be precise, Ayat 5:33 from Quran has been cited: "The punishment for those who wage war against Allah and his Prophet and make mischief in the land is to murder them, crucify them, or cut off a hand and foot on opposite sides... their doom is dreadful." Ayat 3:56 states, "As for those disbelieving infidels, I will punish them with a terrible agony in this world and the next." On the strength of the above mandates from the Quran quoted out of context, terrorists have sought to justify 9/11 and other killings of innocents, purportedly to punish the infidels for their mischiefs.

In the given backdrop of unabated terrorism in India, it is not enough for muftis or clerics to merely give their opinions in response to queries. It is time they issued decree to all followers of Islam not to cooperate with any individual or group involved in terrorism or violence, failing which the defiant individual may be threatened with ostracism.

A fatwa of this type shall not be incongruous with what the clerics have been doing all along, that is, directing followers to vote for a particular party. If so done, it is bound to have salutary effect on Islamic masses, particularly the youth in Jammu & Kashmir and other places in India.

Islam's message to the world is equality and brotherhood. Carrying this message to its logical end, we ought to perceive universal brotherhood that is also the central theme of Vedanta. In the words of Swami Vivekanand, "When a man has reached the highest, when he sees neither man nor woman, neither sect nor creed, nor colour, nor birth, nor any of these differentiations, but goes beyond and find that divinity which is the real man behind every human being - then alone he has reached the universal brotherhood." There is no dearth of Islamic saints who had seen the reality behind every human being. Will not they show the correct path to misguided youth dubbed as terrorists?

The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh probing the 3/7 Varanasi serial blasts has picked up Imam Waliullah, the Pesh Imam of Phulpur in Allahabad for his alleged involvement in the terror attack. In the past, this imam has been accused of associating with anti-national elements and was arrested and jailed in 2001.

Imam Waliullah, who was under surveillance for some time, was picked up by a STF team on Wednesday. The STF sleuths in plain clothes accosted the imam and before he could raise an alarm, huddled him into a waiting SUV and took him to an undisclosed destination for interrogation. 

The entire operation was carried out in a hush-hush manner and kept completely under wraps. It was after some sympathisers of the imam took to the streets, claiming that the cleric had been kidnapped, that the local Allahabad Police came to know of the raid and detention.

According to STF sources, the sleuths were despatched from Lucknow only after collecting adequate evidence against the Pesh Imam. The source said that Imam Waliullah was a scholar at Deoband and it was during his stay at the seminary as a research scholar that he came in contact with some terrorists and their leaders active in Jammu & Kashmir.

The STF official confided that soon after the blasts rocked the holy temple town on the eve of Holi, sleuths noticed that certain individuals would frequently visit the Imam in Phulpur. Those visits suddenly stopped. The STF, meanwhile, analysed the links of Imam Waliullah with some specific Islamist terrorists, and after being convinced of his alleged links with them and their leaders, nabbed the Pesh Imam.

Earlier in 2001, Waliullah had been nabbed alongwith his brothers, Wasiullah and Ubaidullah, for their alleged involvement in anti-national activities. The police had to face stiff local resistance but somehow managed to send them to jail.

Meanwhile, in Varanasi, Mufti-e-Banaras and Imam of Gyanvapi Masjid, Maulana Abdul Batin Noomani, on being told about the detention of the Allahabad cleric, said that until the crime was established no innocent should be harassed.

The Mufti was quick to add that anyone, irrespective of religion, should be punished severely as per the law of the land if he is involved in heinous crimes and terrorist attacks like that in Varanasi.

Maulana Batin was among the religious leaders who not only condemned the Varanasi blasts but also played a key role in ensuring communal harmony. Besides, he strongly condemned terrorism and issued a fatwa, telling Muslims that there is no place for violence and killing of innocent people in Islam.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking direction to the Centre and Uttar Pradesh government to take appropriate steps to ensure safety of all religious places in Varanasi.

The petition was filed in the wake of recent blasts at Sankat Mochan Temple and Varanasi Cantt Railway Station.

A Bench headed by Justice Ruma Pal dismissed the petition filed by Mohammed Aslam alias Bhure observing that the authorities were doing their job.

Bhure known for filing PILs on Ayodhaya dispute had urged the court to direct the Varanasi authorities to regulate the entry of devotees at religious places at Varanasi.

This will ensure that large number of people do not assemble near these places.

In his petition filed through advocate MM Kashyap, he had also requested the authorities to put barricades near the religious places at Varanasi and increase the security.

He had sought to draw the court's attention to certain orders passed by the apex court in the past, directing the authorities to take measures to ensure safety of Vishwanath temple and Gyanvapi Masjid at Varanasi and Krishna temple and Idgah at Mathura.


Would he like same to applied on any Masjid or Chruch where people gather to perform prayer? Why only for Hindu's place of worship?

Indian cleric blames Bangladeshis for Varanasi blasts

Here goes DDM again.

QUOTEThe 32-year-old imam said the five had been sent by him to Bangladesh for arms training.

The blasts, he added, were carried out by three militants from the Harkat-ul-Jihad, with which he said he was closely associated.

"They were specially detailed for the blasts and have gone back to Bangladesh," he said, admitting his involvement in the blasts that left 13 dead at Varanasi's Sankat Mochan Temple and seven at the railway station.

Waliullah said he provided shelter to the three Bangladeshi militants, took them around to the sites of the explosions for a reconnaissance trip and got them to buy three pressure cookers that were used as killer bombs.

"They came to me on March 3 and I provided them a room to stay just across my home in Phoolpur. They undertook two trips with me to Varanasi," he stated.

"Finally, on March 7 (when the blast took place), the three men left Phoolpur very early in the morning by train to Varanasi after which they never came back to me. They were scheduled to go back to Bangladesh."

Waliullah admitted going to Bangladesh sometime in 2003, but claimed his plans to go to Pakistan could not materialise because of "some trouble at the Pakistan end".

"It was in Bangladesh that the Harkat-ul-Jihad chief Asad Ullah nominated me as area commander of the group for Uttar Pradesh," Waliullah said.

"Subsequently, in 2004, I sent these five young men to Bangladesh from where Asad Ullah forwarded them over to Pakistan to attend a 28-day ISI training camp," he said.

He confessed to having been inspired by the taped discourses of Maulana Azhar Mahmood, the Jaish-e-Mohammad chief who was released following the hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane in Kandahar in 1999.

Referring to the three men who allegedly carried out the blasts, Senior Superintendent of Police SK Bhagat said: "Waliullah was known to the three Bangladeshi militants as they had all received their Islamic schooling (at India's well-known Islamic institution) in Deoband in Uttar Pradesh."

Either police or DDM HT is trying to twist facts.

Bombers/Imam were brainwashed in Deoband, Deoband is run by Madani family. Father Madani passed away in Feb,2006 , now son is in control. They are part of HJUI. Sonia Gandhi had shared podium with Madani and HJUI gang in Oct 2005 in New Delhi and confirmed her full support to Islamic agenda. Congress is supporting HJUI.
HJUI is part of Pan-Islamic Jihad.
