I am a westerner and a born Christian. I was mainly brought up in catholic schools, my uncle, Father Guy Gautier, a gem of a man, was the parish head of the beautiful Saint Jean de Montmartre church in Paris ; my father, Jacques Gautier, a famous artist in France, and a truly good person if there ever was one, was a fervent catholic all his life, went to church nearly every day and lived by his Christian values. There are certain concepts in Christianity I am proud of : charity for others, the equality of system in many western countries, Christ's message of love and compassionâ¦.
Yet, I am a little uneasy when I see how much Christianity is taking over India under the reign of Sonia Gandhi : according to a 2001 census, there are about 23.4 million Christians in India ; not even 2,5% of the nation, a negligible amount. Yet there are today five Christian chief ministers in Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
One should add that the majority of politicians in Sonia Gandhi's closed circle are either Christians or Muslims. She seems to have no confidence in Hindus.Ambika Soni, a Christian, is General Secretary of the Congress and a very powerful person, with close access to Sonia Gandhi. Oscar Fernandes is Union Programme Implementation Minister. Margaret Alwa is the eminence grise of Maharasthra. Karnataka is virtually controlled by AK Anthony, whose secretaries are all from the Southern Christian association. Valson Thampu, a Hindu hater, is Chairman NCERT curriculum Review Committee, John Dayal, another known Hindu baiter, has been named by Sonia Gandhi in the National Integration Council ; and Kancha Ilaya, who hates Hindus, is being allowed by the Indian Government to lobby with the UN and US Congress so that caste discrimination in India is taken-up by these bodies.
I have nothing personnally against Sonia Gandhi, in fact she probably is a good person to win the alliegance of so many and certainly a loving mother . I share with her a love for India, like her I have lived in this country for over 30 years and like her I have married an Indian. But nevertheless, since she is at the top, Christian conversions in India seem to have gone in overdrive. More than 4,000 foreign Christian missionaries are involved in conversion activities across different states. In Tripura, there were no Christians at independence, there are 120.000 today, a 90% increase since 1991. The figures are even more striking in Arunachal Pradesh, where there were only 1710 Christians in 1961, but 1,2 million today, as well as 780 churches! In Andhra Pradesh, churches are coming-up every day in far flung villages and there was even an attempt to set-up one near Tirupati. Many of the North-East separatist movements, such as the Mizo or the Bodos, are not only Christian dominated, but also sometimes function with the covert backing of the missionaries. In Kerala, particularly in the poor coastal districts, you find "miracle boxes" put in local churches: the gullible villager writes out a paper mentionning his wish: a fising boat, a loan for a pukka house, fees for the son's schooling⦠And lo, a few weeks later, the miracle happens ! And of course the whole family converts, making others in the village follow suit. During the Tsunami, entire dalit villages in Tamil Nadu were converted to Christianity with the lure of money.
It is true that there have been a few backlashes against missionnaries and nuns, particularly the gruesome muder of Staines and his two sons. But Belgium historian Konenraad Elst laments that « When over a thousand Hindus are killed and a quarter million Hindus ethnically cleansed in Kashmir, the world media doesn't even notice, but watch the worldwide hue and cry when a few local riots take place and a few missionaries are killed by unidentified tribal miscreants. Christian Naga terrorists have been killing non-Christians for decades on end, and this has never been an issue with the world media, except to bewail the "oppression" of the Nagas by "Hindu India" ». More than 20,000 people have lost their lives to insurgency in Assam and Manipur in the past two decades. As recently as last week, four paramilitary Assam Rifles soldiers were killed in an ambush yesterday by the outlawed United National Liberation Front (UNLF).
The other day I was at the Madras Medical center, the foremost heart hospital in Madras. Right when you enter the lobby, you find a chapel, inviting everybody to pray, there are pictures and quotations of Christ everywhere and a priest visits all the patients, without being invited at all. Educational institutes and orphanages run by Christian organisations have become big business in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and other states. In Pondichery, where I am often, schools run by Adventists force their pupils, mostly Hindus, to say Christian prayers every day and attend mass. They are constantly fed anti Hindu slogans and biases under different forms, whether it is in history books, or discourses by priests during religious classes. Even in the elite schools or colleges, such as Saint Stephen in Delhi, Saint Xavier in Calcutta or Loyola college in Madras, where no direct proletization is attempted, Hindu pupils are subtly encouraged towards skepticism of their own religion, and admiration of whatever is Western. One should also say that it's a one way traffic : remember the furor when MM Joshi wanted the Saraswati hymn to be sung at a Chief Ministers' meet on education ? And imagine the uproar in secular India if portions of the Bhagavad Gita, this Bible for all humanity, were read at the beginning of the day in public schools ?
Sonia Gandhi said during the last National Integration Council meeting : « We are committed to ideological battle against communal forces which seek to destroy our diversity and polarise us. Certain parties promote polarisation and confrontation. And there are certain regimes in India which promote communalism ». But is not actually the Congress under Mrs Gandhi, which is promoting communalism, by insidiously installing Christians and Muslims (and Marxists) everywhere, propping up Christian states, allowing a free hand too missionnaries and pressing for reservations for Christian Dalits and Muslims, as recently done in AP, in a nation of 850 million Hindus ?
In my country, France, a Christian majority nation , it would be unthinkable to have Hindus â or even Indian born French for that matter â in so many positions of power. Impossible also to find a non-elected, non French, non-Christian person being the absolute ruler of the country behind the scene as Sonia Gandhi is in India. Indians like to say that the greatness of India is that it accepts a foreigner and a Christian like Sonia Gandhi. But is'nt it rather a weakness, and an aberration ? Can't we find a worthy leader amongst one billion Indians ? This is an India where you see today Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati of Dwarka Peeth, made to disembark from an Indian Airlines flight for carrying his holy dand, a thin bamboo stick which is a symbol of their spiritual designation, inside the aircraft cabin.
Are we heading then towards a Christian India under Sonia Gandhi's helm? It would be a tremendous loss not only to India, but also to the world. For in India, you find the only living spirituality left on this planet.

The community in Kerala believes that St Thomas came to this part in AD 52 and had established seven and half churches.
The community considers St Thomas as the 'Father in Faith' of Christians in India.
The present Pope, in a pronouncement at St Peter's Square in Vatican recently, spoke of St Thomas the apostle, seemingly taking away from him the traditional title 'Apostle of India'.
Though he did not actually use the expression 'Apostle of Pakistan', what he said may seem to imply it, said an article by George Nedungatt, a faculty member of the Oriental Pontifical Institute, Rome, in Satya Deepam, a mouthpiece of the Syro-Malabar church.
The article said the Pope's predecessors had on several occasions referred to St Thomas as the Apostle of India.
However, differing from this view, Pope Benedict feels the area St Thomas evangelised was not south India, but what he called "western India" corresponding roughly to today's Pakistan, said the article.
The Pope, addressing a vast crowd at St Peter's Square, is said to have stated, "Thomas first evanglised Syria and Persia and then penetrated as far as western India from where Christianity also reached south India".
According to the Pope, <b>while north-western India was evangelised by St Thomas, south India was not evangelised by him.</b>
He does not specify who first preached the gospel in south India; whether it was some disciple or disciples of the apostle himself or others in the post-apostolic age or later, the article said.
As the Pope sees it, south India was not evangelised by St Thomas, but by Christians from north-western India, seemingly at a later priod.
<b>"The Thomas Christians of south India, both Catholic and others are not likely to be thankful for this papal statement. </b>This is a clear departure from the pronouncements of his predecessors," the article said.
Church sources say there is scholarly debate on the evidence on whether St Thomas came to India and Kerala.
Historical proofs are the Gospel of St Thomas and Act of Thomas, the sources said. From these there are evidences that St Thomas came to India. But it is not clear whether he had come to western India or south India, the sources said adding, the geography of the country was different earlier.
Several Popes have asserted the origin of south Indian Christianity from the Apostle Thomas. Pope John Paul V in 1606 erected the diocoese of San Thomas of Mylapore "because there lay buried the body of St Thomas," the article said.
Establishing the hierarchy of the Latin Catholic church in India in 1886, Pope Leo XIII referred to India as having first received the light of the gospel from Apostle Thomas.
During the apostolic visit to India in 1986, Pope John Paul II visited the Mylapore tomb (in present day Chennai) and in a brief discourse, he is said to have cited the words of Apostle Thomas to his companions, it said.
In 1990, while raising the Syro-Malabar church as a major archepiscopal church, Pope John Paul II wrote that this church "as the constant tradition holds, owed its origin to the preaching of Apostle St Thomas."
The article said the Pope may have stepped on unfamiliar ground. The evangelisation of south India by north Indian Christianity is a new theory.
The Pope has 'ignored' the Indian tradition about the evanglisation of south India by Apostle Thomas and sets aside the clear and repeated statements of his predecessors supporting the tradition.
"In short, he denies the apostolic origin of the churches of the Thomas Christians by excluding Apostle Thomas from the evangelisation of south India," it said.

Mumbai: A Christian missionary and organizer named Sunil Samuel Kelvin had organised a program for conversion of faith, in the name of healing incurable diseases through miracles, at Mahakavi Kalidas Natyamandir, Mumbai on the 6 th November at 5 p.m. For this purpose, he had also published handbills containing objectionable advertisements.
In accordance with a complaint filed with the Mulund Police Station by Shri. Kashiram Parab, Convener of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), on the 5th November, 2006, the police have registered a cognizable offence under the 'Drug and Magic Remedies Act (Objectionable Advertisements) 1954'. Sunil Kelvin, the Christian missionary, had published handbills containing objectionable and illegal information under the title 'Live in the Spirit'.
<b>He had made an indirect plot to convert the poor through these handbills by making claims about curing incurable diseases. The surprising fact is that the handbill did not have names of the printer, publisher and the organisation. Taking notice of this fact, the HJS filed a written complaint against the organisers, at the Mulund Police Station.
Accordingly, the Mulund Police interrogated Sunil Samuel Kelvin, the organizer of the program. The police have registered a cognizable offence against Kelvin under the 'Drug and Magic Remedies Act (Objectionable Advertisements) 1954'.</b>
This case has been a second success story for the HJS' mission. In a similar case that occurred in January 2006 at Vasai Road, Father John Matthew had claimed to cure incurable diseases by miracles through prayers. At that time, after being warned by the HJS about conducting agitations, the police arrested Father John Matthew and stopped his program. The HJS appeals to all Hindus to be alert and fight against fake Christian missionaries through constitutional means.

Regarding Christian missionaries, I'd like to know a few things from a Hindutvad perspective.
#1 What exactly is the view regarding them?
#2 Do Hindutvads wish to see them leave?
#3 How they propose to bring that about? Force?
#4 If Hidnutvas want all missionaries out, what happens to schools, hospitals and social service orgs funded by them? Will they be closed down? Won't the common man suffer?
#5 Or, do Hindutvads want missionaries to do social work without indulging in conversion activites?
Can someone please help me on this? I understand the problem of missionaries, but not sure what Hindus propose to do, because more problems may crop up without their presence. Or, do you have some other grand agenda, which I am failing to see. So far, I've read posts on their dubious activities, but haven't come across a practical solution to this nuisance. this study is the application of Church Planting Movement strategy to
forward caste Hindus of India.It traces the historical development of
group or people movementstrategy and then compares that strategy with
traditional missionaryapproaches in India. It shows that evangelizing
households is the primarystrategy of the New Testament and the most
appropriate strategy forinitiating Church Planting Movements. The thesis
carefully examines salvation understanding in the Hindu context and its
relationship to the caste system. All of this lays a foundation for a
proper approach to evangelization of forward caste Hindus in light of the
fact that there have been no documented Church Planting Movements among
forward caste Hindus in all of India.
The paper concludes that the best approach to facilitating a Church
Planting Movement among forward caste Hindus is by not planting
churches. As contradictory as this sounds, the paper shows that
Christian disciples remaining within Hindu culture and familial systems holds
the potential for the most indigenous approach to establishing
multiplying churches among forward caste Hindus.

The aggressive stand being taken by Christian missionaries in the last couple of years is obviously pointing towards Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy. Though he is not directly encouraging the misisonaries to deliberately intrude into the Hindu religious institutions, his indifferent attitude towards such activities is causing a lot of concern among the Hindus.
The man behind such activities of missionaries is said to be Anil Kumar, son-in-law of the Chief Minister, who is actively touring all parts of the State, preaching Christian gospels. He is encouraging the Churches to take up aggressive campaign and this has emboldened the missionaries to interfer in the sacred places of Hindus.
It is learnt that Chief Minister's advisors suggested to him to see that this does not go beyond a limit, lest it would result in large scale religious conflicts in the State.

It may sound rather exaggeration or mere coincidence, but observers say religious conflicts have gone up eversince Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy came to power in the State in 2004.
Especially, Christians who were lying low before 2004 have now stepped up their activities even in Hindu religious places like Tirumala, which was never heard of in the past. What would one call the distribution of pamphlets in Vaikuntham queue complex of Tirumala by Christian preachers, appointment of a Christian-convert as Special Officer of TTD and other Christians in Sri Venkateshwara University and Padmavathi Mahila University? This may appear totally inadvertant, but it is leading to religious conflicts all over the State.
Nowhere in the country was so much fuss about release of the film "Da Vinci Code" as it is now in Andhra Pradesh. Those who did not even read the book are staging dharnas and attacking theatres. It is better the Chief Minister does not create an impression that he is favouring one particular region, hurting the sentiments of the others. If that happens, AP may become another Gujarat in the coming days.

The rivalry between the two outlawed militant out fits has taken a turn for the worse with the All-Tripura Tiger Force deciding to oppose the proselytisation of the tribal society to Christianity by the National Liberation Front of Tripura. They also urged all sections of people to prevent any such attempt.
In a statement issued on the eve of the Garia Puja, the biggest religious festival of Hindu tribals in Tripura, the ATTF president Mr Ranjit Debbarma said they will take stern action against any attempt to disrupt the festival. The festival is scheduled to begin from April 14 and continue for a week.
Clarifying their position on religious issue the ATTF supremo said, âEveryone is free to practise the religion of his choice.â He also criticised the NLFT for interfering with the social affairs of the tribals and forcibly converting people to Christianity. He condemned the NLFT for killing Hindu religious leaders, including popular saint Shanti Kumar Tripura and Vaishnava Mahants Tachhidas Reang and Sanjit Reang, last year. Earlier the NLFT had issued a ban on participation of tribals in any kind of Hindu festival including Garia Puja. It had provoked widespread protest from the tribal society and the Jamatya hoda (Community council), the highest body of the orthodox Hindu tribal Jamatya community, launched air agitation.
The ATTF which was silent over the issue all along appears to have issued the statement in a bid to carry with the popular sentiment of the tribals. However, the police is worried over the new development and is fearing a fresh bout of violence between the two outfits who are already fighting each other over maintaining supremacy in the tribal areas. Meanwhile, the Jamatya Hoda has also decided to defy the NLFTâs ban and celebrate the Garia Puja in the traditional way. The governor Lt. Gen. (retired) Krisnamohan Seth will inaugurate the festival in Bagma under the Udaipur subdivision of South Tripura district on April 14.

Bogus trustees forced girls to Christianity, misused management quota, knocked off money for admission in D. Ed. college
A writ petition before the High Court division bench of Chief Justice H. S. Bedi and Justice V. M. Kanade has revealed that anything is possible when it comes to admissions in schools and colleges. It could go to such level of desperation that students could fall prey to the ploy of bogus trustees, get converted to Christianity so as to make them eligible to avail management quotas, pay money and get admitted. The false trustees who did not allow the genuine principal and teachers to have access to their offices, even exceeded the allotted management seats from 21 to 36. Two criminal complaints have been lodged in the matter but it seems that the courtâs intervention is inevitable.
The admission for the first year D.Ed. course in Mary B. Harding College, Solapur, for 2005-06 saw 36 out of a total of 60 students getting admission in the management quota when there were only 21 reservations for girls from the Christian community. On top of that, only eight of the 36 girls were Christians and the others got converted during the admission process. Obviously, the School Education and Sports Department of the state government has not allowed the girls to take the exam in the academic year 2006, forcing them to come to the High Court. The 36 girls seeking relief have blamed the college principal, Mrs. B. B. Kulkarni, whom they alleged had mismanaged the management quota and delayed the process of submitting their documents to
the authorities.
However, the principal in her turn submitted that the college is run by a trust called âMarathi Missionâ for the last six years. And there are people who object to the trustees. Nine such persons forcibly acquired charge of the college office on November 17, 2005 removing the principal and others from their cabins. All the documents, cupboards and files were taken charge of and one of the nine persons, Mrs. Vanita Mackenzie, became the principal in place of Mrs. Kulkarni.
A complaint was lodged against the nine persons including three women at the Sadar Bazar police station under Section 451, 341, 323, 504, 506 of the IPC but the police have hardly made any investigation in the case. When a writ was filed in the high court, the court restored Mrs. Kulkarni as the principal. However, the nine persons had fraudulently given admission to several students in the management quota. In fact, they forced students to adopt Christianity so that they could be accommodated in reserved seats. Lakhs of rupees were collected by these trustees and the same had been deposited in Bank of India.
The principal lodged a separate court case in the district court against the nine seeking action against them for fraud, keeping official documents in their possession and alleged forceful conversion. Advocate Sutar appearing for the principal claims that the copies of the gazette show that the students had got converted after the admission process started. The rule says that one needs to have been converted for at least five years to avail of reserved quota on the basis of religion, cast or creed. Also, because of the fraud, the college has already received notice from the National Council of Teachers Education for changing the intake rules. The court has adjourned the case to December 4.
