Temples: history, architecture and distribution
Of all Kafirs, weren't/aren't butparast (Budhha-parast) the most despicable?
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Of all Kafirs, weren't/aren't butparast (Budhha-parast) the most despicable?<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->This was before Islam reached India.
What one sees is that they 'tolerate' (in the christoislamic sense) the monotheistic people of the book: christians and jews. This meant Jizyah and persecutions.
Then coming upon Persia, they genocide the Parsees even though these people had a holy Book and were monotheists. At this point, 'fire-worshippers' was used as an insult.
Then islamists meet the people who didn't worship an element (fire), but showed respect to statues: the 'butparast'. Islamists beginning hurling abuse against these 'idolators'. Buddhist conversion-and-genocides from western Asia onwards.
Then, my goodness, they came to the Kafirest of all the Kafirs: the Hindus of Hindusthan. Not only did these infidels worship elements and statues, they had countless false gods! That was it, too much heathenness for islam to stomach. Numero Uno in islamic no-no's was The Kafiristan of Hindusthan. Invading islamists recognised the Buddhists in India, massacred, persecuted and chased them away. They remembered from old of the Hindus - polytheistic idolatrous infidels like the ancestral Arabians had been. Well, there was no greater punishment than what islam had already dealt to the Butparasts, so Hindus were afflicted with the same love from the Religion of Peace.

A wealth of archaeological finds has put this Chhattisgarh town in the tourist spotlight.

An intriguing aspect of the findings relates to the presence of statues belonging to Vaishnavite, Shaivite, Buddhist and Jain religions at one place. This is believed to be one of the biggest temple towns of the sixth and seventh centuries discovered anywhere so far.

<b>Unearthed! Ruins of the Laxman temple at Sirpur </b>
http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/life/2...32300200201.jpg
Sirpur was a happening place 1,300 years ago. After centuries of remaining in oblivion, today it has captured its rightful place on the tourist map of Chhattisgarh. And all thanks to the excavations undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India, which has unearthed important Buddhist sites, the 6th-century Laxman Temple and a host of idols belonging to that period.

Standing on the banks of the Mahanadi in Mahasamund district, Sirpur or Shreepur was once the capital of Dakshin Kosala (as Chhattisgarh was then known).

We travelled through picturesque landscape on NH 6 to reach Sirpur, about 80 km from Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. The wooded expanse and the pristine air made the hour-and-a-half drive exhilarating. Our sojourn assumed a more purposeful air as a professor of History from Raipur, Shampa Choube accompanied us on the trip.

<b>Merchants' halt </b>
As we entered the hamlet of Sirpur, there was absolutely no sign that this was once a bustling and flourishing centre of trade that witnessed a constant stream of merchants from China! But yes, it was quite evident that the region was once home to astounding monuments and structures that had become buried under the sands of time. New temples have mushroomed everywhere, almost in clusters, on the shores of the Mahanadi. But our adrenaline levels peaked as we came within sight of the ruins that lay spread over a large area.

The excavations at Sirpur, spread over a 6-km radius of the village, continue to generate excitement in the world of history and archaeology. A mutilated idol here, some broken sculptures there... there's something surfacing every once in a while, adding to the treasure trove of archaeological finds.

<b>Temple town </b>
<b>A Buddhist shrine.</b>
http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/life/2...32300200203.jpg
An intriguing aspect of the findings relates to the presence of statues belonging to Vaishnavite, Shaivite, Buddhist and Jain religions at one place. This is believed to be one of the biggest temple towns of the sixth and seventh centuries discovered anywhere so far. According to archaeological sources, another unique feature here are the stone carvings depicting sexual activity among animals that are not seen even at Khajuraho or Ellora.

Having heard so much about the ruins of the Laxman temple, we proceeded there first. We were awestruck by its sheer size and structure and wondered how such a magnificent work could lay buried for so long a time! The temple is believed to be among the earliest in India built solely of bricks. It is also believed to be the only temple dedicated to Laxman, brother of Lord Rama.

The temple stands on a 6-ft-high platform and its entrance is adorned with several figures carved in stone. The doorframe is of stone and a figure of the reclining Vishnu on Sheshnag is seen on the lintel. The panels of the doorway are embellished with statues depicting the incarnations of Vishnu and his devotees. The high brick roof ends in an imposing shikhar or temple dome, the passage of time clearly writ on it.

A caretaker at the complex guided us to a shed-like structure at the back of the temple which functions as a `museum'. The place stacks rare statues, many of them badly mutilated, belonging to Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. One headless piece in particular caught our attention as our guide explained that it was the Buddha. He informed us that the head would be plastered to the body in due course of time.

<b>Remains of a Shiva temple </b>
http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/life/2...32300200202.jpg
Renovation works are on at the Gandheshwar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and the Buddha Vihara, even as more idols continued to be unearthed at these sites. A metre-high statue of Buddha in the lotus position, belonging to the 6th century, is one of the largest finds at this site. Close by is the Ram temple, which is completely in ruins. A few stone foundation structures are all that remain of it. The Gandeshwar temple has today become the centre of an annual religious fair coinciding with Shivratri.

Historical evidence

The Laxman temple is believed to have been built in the 8th century by Vasata, the daughter of King Suryavarma of Magadh. Vasata was an ardent devotee of Vishnu and she built the temple in memory of her husband Harsha Gupta. Her son Mahashivagupta Balarjun, however, was the Shaivaite ruler credited with building the city of Shreepur — the City of Wealth — as the capital of the Mahakosala kingdom. Every religion, especially Buddhism, flourished under the royal patronage of Harsha Gupta and Balarjun. The latter also promoted architectural styles of every religion and several Buddhist monasteries with their intricate motifs sprung up during his reign.

Copperplate inscriptions and a Chinese coin unearthed at Sirpur indicate that trade was buoyant under Balarjun's rule and this brought with it exchanges of learning from neighbouring countries as well. Sirpur became an established centre of Buddhism between the 6th and 10th centuries and the Chinese traveller Hieun Tsang is believed to have visited the city.

Tsang's travelogue mentions Shreepur as having over a hundred Buddhist monasteries inhabited by over 10,000 monks belonging to the Mahayana sect. Present-day excavations have discovered some conch bangles, giving rise to the surmise that the monasteries were possibly inhabited by Bhikshunis or female monks as well.

Theories abound on the subsequent downfall of the thriving town — a civil war between Buddhists and Shaivites, invasions, declining trade and even floods.

Many rare idols are believed to have been stolen from Sirpur due to lack of proper security. One such piece, an idol of Goddess Tara, is believed to have been stolen in the mid-1960s and is currently housed in a US museum.

Once a flourishing centre of trade, today a veritable tourist's delight, a historian's palette... Sirpur however still remains a village that lacks proper communication and other infrastructure.

<img src='http://www.hinduwisdom.info/images/Hindu_Temple_Muslim_Azerbaijan3.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Baku (Azerbaijan): In an old settlement of oil workers situated 30 km from this Azerbaijani capital is a rare Hindu temple dedicated to 'Jwalaji or the goddess of fire', forgotten for decades but now catching the attention of tourists.

The temple, called the `Atishgah, in this predominantly Muslim republic of the former Soviet Union is a typical Hindu shrine with an iron 'trishul' on its roof with a dome.

Encircled by a stone wall, the Jwalaji temple stands in the middle of a courtyard, surrounded by cells for pilgrims coming all the way from India to worship the Fire Goddess in its hey day.

Built in 1713, a stone plaque in Hindi on the portal of the main gate says that this gate was built by Ram Datt in 1866.

On the carved entrances of cells are stone plaques describing who built them and in which year. In all there are over 20 stone plaques, of which 18 are in Devanagri, one in Gurumukhi and one in Farsi (Persian), Sanskrit text on which begins in Hindu tradition with "Om Shri Ganeshaye Namah."

<img src='http://www.hinduwisdom.info/images/Sanskrit_script_Hindu_Temple_Azerbaijan.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

The temple was built on the spot where subterranean gas leaking out of the rocky ground used to burn day-and-night. Local records say that it was built by a prominent Hindu traders community living in Baku and its construction coincided with the fall of the dynasty of Shirwanshahs and annexation by Russian Empire following Russo-Iranian war.

the capital (and other superstructure) of indian columns often dwarfs the columns themselves. I think this is clearly reflected in persian architecture:

<b>Pilgrim's progress from London to Gujarat's eunuch temple</b>
Recently purchased a book '<b>Temples of South India</b>,' written by Ambujam Anantharaman. This book highlights the prominent temples in in South (covers Karnataka, AP, TN, Kerala) and she has some excellent write-ups covering the legends, history along with spiritual/devotional aspects.

The author used to write for ChennaiOnline, some of her work can still be found in their archives section.

I only wish were there was a similar book on rest of the states of India. Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Question for some of our gurus (those from AP might now)...
There supposed to be a tradition of AP govt sending money/gifts to Bhadrachalam temple on Ram Navami day - something that started in the days of Tana Shah of 1600s (some background on the on this here.
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Influenced by the majesty of Lord Rama, Golconda Ruler Tanishah earmarked the income derived from the said Palwoncha paragana which came to Rs 20,000 and odd for the maintenance of the temple which was continued during Nizam's reign and offering Pearls on the occasion of kalyana mahotsavam (Sri Rama Navami) to Deities on an elephant through a specially sent messenger. <b>That procedure of sending pearls to the Deities is still followed by present state Government and continued to offer during Sri Rama Navami Festival.</b>

Does this tradition still continue? Has YSR regime tried any of his shennanigans here?

<span style='color:red'>Awareness Campaign to Save Temples</span>

Under AP CM Y. S. Rajasekhar Reddy (YSR) about 34,000 Temples are under Govt. control. Only 18% of revenue generated is said to be given back for temples purposes, while remaining 82% used for other purposes by Govt. at their discretion. Looting, Massive sale of temple lands, Demolition, Encroachments, aggressive religious conversions in temples vicinity occurring all over AP. Govt. which is supposed to be a protector has become a destroyer that threatens the very existence of Hindu Institutions. The World famous Tirupathi temple is specially targeted.

Tirupathi: Govt. attempted to take over 5 out of 7 Tirumala Hills for Church and Tourism Purposes. YSR, a Christian CM, is alleged to use TTD money for Hockey tournament in his parents name. Govt. eyed only Hindu (TTD) funds for Jala Yagnam to tune of 500 crores. (The Hindu: 7/17/06, Deccan Chronicle:3/8/07, justandhra.com,3/22/06).

Demolition: Recently 15 temples were demolished for Golf Course. YSR son blew up a temple in Anantpur that affirms his family’s intolerance towards Hinduism. (Hindu 8/27/204 Deccan Chronicle:3/8/07, Andhra Jyoti 9/5/0?).

Illegal occupation and Land scams: Valuable temple properties, estimated at hundreds of crores, is under encroachment. More than 50 per cent of the `land-grabbers' seem to have strong political connections, while others include those `patronized' by the Endowments Department. YSR brother Vivekananda Reddy
built personal property on Gurkul Trust Lands worth many crores (The Hindu, 3/9/07).

Mass Land Sales: Tens of thousands of acres of endowment lands, meant for sustenance in perpetuity are being sold without approval of the Hindu community and without any justification. Eg., 3000 acres temple land in East Godavari was sold. Sold 9201 acres of rural temple land and decided to sell 7000 acres of urban
lands worth 20,000 crores (Deccan Chronicle, 4/31/06, Eenadu, 3/30/06, Deccan Chronicle 4/8/06).

Take Over: On 3/12/2007 State Govt. announced plans to takeover cash rich 181 mutts and all religious trusts in the state with many crores of assets, the first step in looting them (Deccan Chronicle, 3/12/07).

AP Govt. allocates 1.1 crores for Mosques, 6.5 crores for Churches. Pays Haj trips (12,000 Rs per pilgrim) with pending proposal to Bethlehem. Compare this with 50% bus fare surcharge on Maha Sivarathri day taxing poor Hindus similar to Aurangazeb’s Jizya tax (Deccan Chronicle: 8/23/06, 12/18/06, Eeenadu, 2/16/07).

Hindu Festivals Holi, Krishna Janmashtami and Sri Rama Navami (in AP) are no more Govt. Holidays.(Jyoti, 4/5/07) See reverse for additional details

Hindu Temples, Institutions & Hinduism itself are illegally targeted by Governments in India. Using Hindu Temple Endowment Act, Looting, Selling, Encroachments are occurring all over India. Particularly alarming is the situation in Andhra Pradesh (AP). 4/9/09

Examples of atrocities on Specific Hindu Temples.

TIRUPATHI

The state Govt. in association with Missionaries has particularly targeted the World famous Tirupathi temple. The subversive activities of Missionaries were zeroed at Tirumala temple itself. Attempted to tie up SVIMS Sri Venkateswara Institute for Medical Sciences with Christian Cherian Heart Foundation using 100 crores of TTD money. Padmavathi University Vice Chancellor Veena Noble Das appointed by Govt. is engaging in

conversion activities on campus and is reported to be responsible for suicide of a student who was forced to convert (Andhra Jyothi, 3/30/3007). In July 2006, TV Journalist Om Prakash who attempted to record the Christian Evangelical activity was beaten up and his equipment was confiscated.

SIMACHALAM

Simachalam is the Ancient Temple of Narasimha Swamy. Very Recently the Temple has come under siege by Missionaries, who have been conducting aggressive conversions. In a span of 20 Months, four churches and 3 convent schools have come up in the vicinity at the foothills. Just one village Arilova has 35 churches. Out of 11,000 acres owned originally by temple, endowment department has record of only 8000 acres and it is believed that more than 3000 acres of land was encroached.

BHADRACHALAM

BHADRACHALAM is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Sri Ramachandra and situated on the banks of the sacred river Godavari. Govt. is currently planning to buy 900 acres of temple land at rate determined by Govt. for donation to victims of Polavaram project (Eenadu, 4/3/2007). On Hanuman Jayanthi day missionaries
placed posters in the temple encouraging conversion (Eenadu, 5/24/06).

CHILUKURI BALAJI TEMPLE
This is famous Chilukuri Balaji Temple at Hyderabad Outskirts. It is a very well run organization by Private trustees. However it is target of Government takeover for its revenue generating potential. (The Hindu, 8/24/06)

The actions of evangelical Christian CM YSR Govt. suggests a well designed plan to
decimate Hinduism in AP through destruction of Hindu Institutions and abetting massive illegal conversions. The entire state infrastructure is made available for these activities. Areas surrounding every major Hindu Temple has become center of intense conversion activity.

Endowment Dept. permits enormous Christian prayer meeting on temple lands with advertisements in temples. All these activities are to encourage Hindus to convert.

The Major chunk of temple money is transferred for various political schemes while more than 40,000 Priests are given salary below Rs.500 /- Month and over 3,000 Priest are paid only Rs. 400 /- for the whole year.

While Muslim and Christian institution funds are left untouched, Govt. relentlessly targets Hindu (e.g., TTD) money for various non-hindu projects.

Hinduism never discriminated any religion. It considers every religion as true, every prayer as true. Jews were never persecuted in India. Hindus are said to help build churches when first Syrian Christians came to India. Gandhiji who fought all his life for social justice & religious tolerance was first a Hindu. He called
religious conversions engaged by missionaries the deadliest poison that ever sapped the fountain of truth.

Selfish politicians like YSR are bent on destroying 10,000 year old dharma.
PLEASE DON’T JUST STANDBY & WATCH. TAKE A STAND & FIGHT INJUSTICE.
<b>Shakthi(Goddesses) worship</b>

The word shakthi means force, the feminine energy. it is regarded as the primordial creative principle that underlies the cosmos, and as the energising force behind all divinity, creatures and beings
In several scriptures, the personification of shakthi - kali - was said to be the source of the three aspects in divinity,ie creation, protection and transformation
There existed in Tamilnadu the worship of female goddesses and Kali was one of them. They were all ferocious and human sacrifices to them were common. The new Saivam began to refine this and the Sakthi cult was born. Goddess with benign and beautiful looks came to be regarded as Sakthi, the consort of Siva. Formerly, the dancing Lord was conceived to be having his wife in the left half of his body. Hence she was not separately worshipped. Now stone sculpting had become popular and separate shrines with stone images of Sakthi came to be erected within Siva temples. Some temples of the former ferocious goddesses were converted into Sakthi temples and Lingam was also erected in them. The legend that Sankara reduced the ferociousness of Akilandeswari in Thiruvanaikoil (near Trichy) by making some changes in her ornaments lends support to this
In Hinduism, Shakti is an aspect of Devi, and a personification of God as the Divine Mother who represents the active, dynamic principles of feminine power. In Shaktism, Shakti is worshiped as the Supreme Being. Alternatively, in other Hindu traditions, Shakti represents the power of God, called Vishnu or Shiva. For Vaishnavites, God's power or Shakti is Lakshmi. For Shaivites, God's power is Parvati

For the past 2 years I visited certain temples in and around Chennai, Tamilnadu.
Particularly in Goddesses temples, shakthi worship is being practiced by different ways and means. Here I would like to post certain pictures and videos taken at the temple premises about the rituals and practices by the devotees for your views and discussion.

<b>Ghost chasing at melmalaiyanur, Tamilnadu</b>

Ghost chasing is a common practice at Amman temples(Goddess temples)
In Tamilnadu, India. People particularly women are affected by some psycho
Problems are said to be of ghosts or devils. The victims behave indifferently
And could not be cured by any system of medicine. At last, people come and worship their traditional rural deities which are capable of chasing ghosts and evil spirits.
The chasing rituals are being done by the rural priests along with drums etc.
