I am sorry to hijack this thread for a seemingly unrelated thread but I couldnt find the trends thread.
I dont understand this sick behaviour at all. How the heck did we become like this ? http://www.vigilonline.com/news/plain_spea...lainSpeakId=110 <!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><b>And so self-righteous Kannadiga Gandhians, the last of the monotheists, abandoned themselves to wallowing in an orgy of dog blood-letting, a bloody orgy lasting over a month. First they rounded up every dog they sighted on the roads of Bangalore and killed them brutally we were told.</b> The nation shrugged off this partying on dog blood with an indulgent âhumans will be humansâ smile. Encouraged by this indulgence Kannadiga Gandhians waited a month and then rounded up every dog they sighted in Bangalore, Mysore and Mandya and this time their killing methods gave them a new high â<b> they packed the dogs in vans and kept them there for 48 hours without food or water and without caring to think how the dogs would answer calls of nature.</b> <b>Having roused themselves to a fever of excitement, these Gandhians then set about killing the dogs â they clobbered some to death, they beat some to death, some were injected with cyanide, many electrocuted and others strangulated. Kannadiga Gandhians reached peaks of ecstasy at the culmination of the orgy of blood-letting. </b>Now I know how Hitler treated the Jews and now I also know why for the perverted maniac, watching ordinary pornography is not enough; he needs to watch or perform the act with violence and then with more violence until it culminates in the kind of blood-letting that we witnessed in Bangalore, Mysore and Mandya. These manic killers told the world that they were forced to experience this enjoyment because a dog killed a child. Sure! Sure there are dogs that attack people as sure as there are humans who are drunken drivers, drug peddlers, arms dealers, rapists, child molesters, wife beaters and terrorists. Dogs means rabies said some. Sure! Humans means Aids, war and riots. We want a dog free Bangalore and a rabies free India said these killers. Sure! I want an Aids free, polio free, cancer free, terrorism free, alcohol free, drug free India too. And I want this to be achieved in exactly the same manner as these Kannadiga Gandhians want to achieve a dog free Bangalore and rabies free India.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Those pictures are terrible. To me, killing a dog is as killing a cow or human. Well, killing any animal is just as terrible - but dogs, those good-natured, loyal animals that take care of humans even when we don't deserve it? Sometimes animals have to be put down, because they are dying and in terrible pain, or because they are a source of serious danger (rabies, attacks). But do so with humanity and compassion, don't do so like the Iranian islamics - who regularly kill all dogs in the cruelest of ways (they stone them or invent gruesome tortuous deaths). (In Iran the islamics kill dogs all the time, because it's a Zoroastrian thing to revere dogs as sacred creatures, so the islamics have forever been doing the opposite - like they treat cows in India. Besides, islam hates dogs.) An animal is like a child, it does not know what humans think is right and wrong. So even if a dog killed a child, put it to sleep, don't take 'revenge' on it; and it's even more unimaginable to take revenge on other dogs. May Bhairava and Dattatreya destroy these murderers and protect the sacred creature. Dattatreya has 4 dogs, each representing one of the 4 Vedas. Bhairava too is represented with dog. Yet this is the respect the maniacs are showing to a fellow creature's life and to the representative of sacred knowledge and all noble qualities. This is another sign of the end of Dharma in India. That humans take pleasure in tormenting and torturing other humans is well-known, but I never knew that they were capable of treating animals in such a vindictive manner. I wish the great compassionate Mahendra would strike all the villains down with his lighting bolt and rescue his animal friends.

I am still tongue-tied. I still cant find words to describe the disgust I feel looking at this pictures.
Mahaprasthanika Parva of Mahabharata relates thus:
...Then Bhima fell down. Having fallen down, Bhima addressed king Yudhishthira the just, saying, O king, behold, I who am thy darling brother have fallen down. For what reason have I dropped down? Tell me if thou knowest it. Yudhishthira said, Thou wert a great eater, and thou didst use to boast of thy strength. Thou never didst attend, O Bhima, to the wants of others while eating. It is for that, O Bhima, that thou hast fallen down. Having said these words, the mighty-armed Yudhishthira proceeded on, without looking back. He had only one companion, the dog of which I have repeatedly spoken to thee, that followed him now. Vaishampayana said: "Then Shakra, causing the firmament and the Earth to be filled by a loud sound, came to the son of Pritha on a yaana and asked him to ascend it. Beholding his brothers fallen on the Earth, king Yudhishthira the just said unto that deity of a thousand eyes these words: My brothers have all dropped down here. They must go with me. Without them by me I do not wish to go to Heaven, O lord of all the deities. The delicate princess (Draupadi) deserving of every comfort, O Purandara, should go with us. It behoveth thee to permit this. Shakra said, Thou shalt behold thy brothers in Heaven. They have reached it before thee. Indeed, thou shalt see all of them there, with Krishna. Do not yield to grief, O chief of the Bharatas. Having cast off their human bodies they have gone there, O chief of Bharatas race. As regards thee, it is ordained that thou shalt go thither in this very body of thine. Yudhishthira said, This dog, O lord of the Past and the Present, is exceedingly devoted to me. He should go with me. My heart is full of compassion for him. {then in further dialogue, Gods are testing Yudhishthira, by alluring or frightening him, to abandon his dog } Shakra said, Immortality and a condition equal to mine, O king, prosperity extending in all directions, and high success, and all the felicities of Heaven, thou hast won today. Do thou cast off this dog. In this there will be no cruelty. Yudhishthira said, O thou of a thousand eyes. O thou that art of righteous behaviour, it is exceedingly difficult for one that is of righteous behaviour to perpetrate an act that is unrighteous. I do not desire that union with prosperity for which I shall have to cast off one that is devoted to me. Indra said, There is no place in swarga for persons with dogs. Besides, the Krodhavasas take away all the merits of such persons. Reflecting on this, act, O king Yudhishthira the just. Do thou abandon this dog. There is no cruelty in this. Yudhishthira said, It has been said that the abandonment of one that is devoted is infinitely sinful. It is equal to the sin that one incurs by slaying a Brahmana. Hence, O great Indra, I shall not abandon this dog today from desire of my happiness. Even this is my vow steadily pursued, that I never give up a person that is terrified, nor one that is devoted to me, nor one that seeks my protection, saying that he is destitute, nor one that is afflicted, nor one that has come to me, nor one that is weak in protecting oneself, nor one that is solicitous of life. I shall never give up such a one till my own life is at an end. Indra said, Whatever gifts, or sacrifices spread out, or libations poured on the sacred fire, are seen by a dog, are taken away by the Krodhavasas. Do thou, therefore, abandon this dog. By abandoning this dog thou wilt attain to the region of the deities. Having abandoned thy brothers and Krishna, thou hast, O hero, acquired a region of felicity by thy own deeds. Why art thou so stupefied? Thou hast renounced everything. Why then dost thou not renounce this dog? Yudhishthira said, This is well known in all the worlds that there is neither friendship nor enmity with those that are dead. When my brothers and Krishna died, I was unable to revive them. Hence it was that I abandoned them. I did not, however, abandon them as long as they were alive. To frighten one that has sought protection, the slaying of a woman, the theft of what belongs to a Brahmana, and injuring a friend, each of these four, O Shakra, is I think equal to the abandonment of one that is devoted. Vaishampayana continued: "Hearing these words of king Yudhishthira the just, the dog became transformed into the Dharma Dev, who, well pleased, said these words unto him in a sweet voice fraught with praise. Dharma said: Thou art well born, O king of kings, and possessed of the intelligence and the good conduct of Pandu. Thou hast compassion for all creatures, O Bharata, of which this is a bright example. Formerly, O son thou wert once examined by me in the woods of Dwaita, where thy brothers of great prowess met with (an appearance of) death. Disregarding both thy brothers Bhima and Arjuna, thou didst wish for the revival of Nakula from thy desire of doing good to thy (step-) mother. On the present occasion, thinking the dog to be devoted to thee, thou hast renounced the very yaana of the devas instead of renouncing him. Hence. O king, there is no one in Heaven that is equal to thee. Hence, O Bharata, regions of inexhaustible felicity are thine. Thou hast won them, O chief of the Bharatas, and thine is a celestial and high goal.

You are right!! No need of cloned animals!! <!--emo&:thumbdown--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif' /><!--endemo--> We don't need meat to feed us good! I think if every people of the world turn vegetarian more fields now used to breed animals will be used for cereals cultivations and product more food! Just tink about how much does a cow eat, if we have to breed cows to eat their meat we must breed many many cows using many fields to feed them, but if we eat the milk we can breed a small number of cows and then use the field to cultivate. May be a way to solve the problem of people now tryng to live without food!!
What about cloned plants?

That is a big issue now days in US. Cloned/mutated Corn or peanuts or other veggies are causing allergy. Mainly, plant mutated with fish or other animal products. Couples of Univ are doing research, how it will affect humans? Whether it will change genetically signature? That is why now Organic products are more popular in US. Recently, someone had created cow or sheep with 50% Human genes. Who will like to eat that product? We know how cannibalism affected brain in some tribes. It takes 6-7 years to see signs of Mad Cow disease in Human.

I am a vegetarian for a very simple reason: I believe that animals are living beings and they are not here for us to kill them and eat. Some cultures such as islamic culture do the killing in a very brutal manner. They call it halal. One thing you got to realize about these people who slaughter innocent animals. If they can kill in such a brutal manner a helpless animal which has done them no harm, how much more brutal they can be to a kafeer.
In this article, Mr O P Gupta, Indian ambassador to Finland, takes on the myths created by western scholars like D N Jha etc about Vedas sanctioning beef-eating. (Jha's article 'Paradox of the Indian Cow' appeared in Hindustan times as a series of articles. Gupta's response appeared in Jagran.)

Bodhiji: English translation for the lazy bums here (as in me), even a short summary covering highlights would suffice.
Oh yes, a brief summary would very be much appreciated - if you have the time Bodhi.
I wanted to post the following for a while, but kept forgetting. Thanks for bringing up the topic which has now reminded me. Both articles are by the jewel that is Sandhya Jain: http://sandhyajain.voiceofdharma.com/art...011212.htm <!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><b>Did Vedic Hindus really eat cow?</b> By Sandhya Jain<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd--> http://sandhyajain.voiceofdharma.com/art...040727.htm Only the following bit of this second link pertains to the matter: <!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Of course, our Marxist friends have had no compunctions in shocking young school students with the claim that our Vedic ancestors, particularly the wily Brahmins, were voracious eaters of cow meat. Undeterred by inconvenient facts like the veneration of the cow in the Vedas and the prohibition on its slaughter, they have continued to perpetuate a colonial falsehood that was invented to facilitate the conversion agenda of Christian missionaries. Discerning readers would have realized that the sudden vehemence with which Marxists are now propagating that Vedic Hindus ate beef is nothing but a crude attempt to de-sacralize the cow and assist the conversion agenda of evangelizing faiths. <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
A brief summary...
When I got selected for the Indian Foreign Services in 1971, my father had me take oath that I would never eat beef, as he was worried that I might start doing so, abroad. So important was this for him. I am reminded of that, and surprised to read, that the articles of Prof D N Jha in Hindustan Times, and essays on allahuakbar dot net, quate none less than the richas from Rigveda to support beef eating. ... Then he explains, quoting several passages, how cow is treated in Rigveda. One of the quotes say, 'she is the mother of rudras, and daughter of vasus, and house of nectar'. At least 16 richas refer to cow as aghanya - 'one not to be hurt'. 8 richas are in context of prayers directy addressed to the cow, and 24 to rishabh (bull). At least 7 richas are praying to agnidev, in context that 'may the meat-eater rakshasa be destroyed'. etc etc... Then, with examples, he goes into the 'hows' and 'whys' of mistranslations being possible. He explains how British from East India Company days itself, had taken pains to mistranslate and make available those translations, to destroy the sanctity of cow and other symbols. British hired Max Muller in 1847 at a very high salary of 200 pounds per year, whereas the running average salary was 70/90 pounds per annum. He mentions that the first Sanskrit-English dictionary was developed by one Pandit Taranath of Calcutta Sanskrit College, in the year 1866. This 6-volume dictionary called Vachaspatyam, is in vogue amongst scholars till date. This dictionary gives meaning of the word Godhan/Gohan as 'slayer of the cow' (and several other mistranslations). This is in complete contrast to the explaination Panini gives, according to which the same word means 'a guest who receives gift of the cow'. The other contemporary work by Swami Prakashanand Saraswati derived the same meaning. So the question is, howcome Pandit Taranath derived this (and other) meanings completely contradicting to Panini? He says the British had paid Rs 10,000 (equal to Rs 2 million of today) in addition to purchasing 200 copies of the dictionary in advance. So this explains the crooked dictionary on which the modern scholars rely. Jha has ignored Panini and followed Taranath. He explains other foundational issues related to translations. He then comes to criticising Jha (and Thapar), by using some of their quotations. Also quotes from Mahabharat, and Shatpath Brahman to show why they are wrong. Next he comes to the muslim question and says that this is a myth that cow-slaughter is a must for muslims. He says during Mughal era, cow was generally respected. Babar has written in his will to Humayun, to ban cow slaughter. It was so, during Akbar's time. EVen aurangzeb was a vegetarian, he says, and used Gangajal for his daily use. (I am not sure about these) In 1919 at Amritsar, Muslim League had paqssed a resolution to not slaugher cows during Bakrid. On Feb 3, 2004, Indian Express reported that ulema of Darul Uloom, said they are trying to make muslims give up the cow slaughter. A day before, Jamayate Ulemaehind also appealed to muslims to give up cow slaughter as it is respected by Hindus. Then he further goes into Ayurveda and modern medical opinions to explain about the importance of cow. He concludes saying he thinks that it is upto the people to decide, whether they justify beef-eating due to some inferiority complex and in the name of progressivism and modernism.
Thank you for the translation, Bodhi.
Some of that is also mentioned by Sandhya Jain in her 'Did Vedic Hindus really eat cow?' which also mentions how Taranath likewise changed the meaning of the Ashvamedha Yagna. <!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->EVen aurangzeb was a vegetarian, he says, and used Gangajal for his daily use. (I am not sure about these)<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->Me neither. <b><i>If</i></b> there's any truth to the Aurangzeb bit at all (Hindus do eagerly grasp at all sorts of possibilities that present themselves to think the muslims were more like us and therefore sympathetic), there are far simpler explanations that won't turn the faithful Aurangzeb, poster-boy for islam, into a kafir: Aurangzeb could have been a vegetable - sorry, 'vegetarian' - because his family hated him and he was afraid of being food poisoned... <!--emo&--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo--> He certainly cared nothing for the sacredness of Ganga Jalam; he probably just reached out to it thinking it must be pure because the Hindus regarded it as such.

Smt Sandhya Jain's article is very important.

Aurangzeb was not a veggie as far as I know, he slaughtered cows to desecrate mandirs even before he came to the throne, the thing about Gangajal applies more to Akbar, as for Babur banning cow slaughter, I am not 100% sure but I read that somwhere but think that it was more for political expedience than any genuine conviction.

The cubs, whom officials at the Jinan Paomaling Wild Animal World in Shandong province are so far just calling "One," "Two" and "Three," have been nursed by a dog since they were rejected by their tiger mother shortly after birth, said Paomaling manager Chen Yucai. The trio's adoptive mother, a mixed breed farm dog called "Huani," is expected to nurse them for about a month or until their appetites outpace her supply, Chen said. Chen said it is common for Chinese zoos to use surrogate dog mothers to nurse rejected tiger cubs and that Huani has nursed tigers before. In the past, Paomaling put dog urine on their rejected cub's fur to make the surrogate think she was nursing one of her own puppies but the zoo didn't bother with Huani because she seemed not to mind nursing the tigers, he said. "The family is getting along well and seems to enjoy each other," Chen said.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I come from a vegetarian family so have always been a vegetarian (or a lacto-vegetarian as Americans call it) but lately have turned into a vegan (purely for health reasons) as most of cholesterol in a vegetarian diet comes from dairy products.
These days I try to incorporate as many anti-oxidant foods in my diet as possible and also try to have foods good for arterial health as well as foods having low or medium G.I.

In all likelyhood the mother tiger was probably harvested as soon as the cubs were born and were therefore "abandoned" by their mother!

Any comments about Fish oil capsules? vegetarian or non-veg?
How about protein supplements(shakes) that are available over the counter? My opinion is that being a vegetarian is good for your health but an average Indian diet in last 100+ years has become more "fried" and has included potatoes (Carbs) in almost all vegetarian dishes. So folks really need to watch out what they are eating.. vegetarian might not be healthy in cases where you eat 20 potato samosas/pakora/bhajia/bhaji a day. |
