<b>Little man with sharp tongue</b>

Parthiv Patel, the pint-sized, teenage wicket-keeper of the Indian Test team, is an ebullient player, never at a loss for words when rivals indulge in an unremitting verbal assault to try and break the Indians' morale on the field.

As a member of the under-19 team a couple of years ago, he shocked his mates by repaying, with interest, the abuse showered on them by Bangladeshi and Pakistani players.

That was when he let them in on a secret. Apparently, growing up in Ahmedabad's gullies, it was commonplace for little Parthiv to come across the type of gutter language that he heard from the rival players. Therefore, he had no difficulty responding to it in kind.

But having Graduated to international cricket with great panache, it seems, the quality of his verbal output on the field too has improved greatly.

In the final Test against Pakistan at Rawalpindi, when he whipped the bails off in a vain attempt to stump <b>Shoaib Akhtar, the big fast bowler was not amused. "Oye chutku!" Akhtar warned, "zyada mat ban, uthva doonga [Hey, puny fellow, don't show off or I'll have you kidnapped]."</b>

Now, a commonplace response would have been "Just try" or some such. But not for the young tyro such tame remarks. He further riled the angry young man by telling him with a straight face, "<b>Haan, ab cricket mein to kuch kar nahi saka to yahi kam kar key roti kamayega [Now that you have failed to do anything of note in cricket, this is the only way you can earn a livelihood]."</b> <!--emo&:cool--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/specool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='specool.gif' /><!--endemo-->

After that, Akhtar, at least as long as he was at the batting crease, did not get into another verbal tangle with the Indian wicket-keeper.

The mother of all battles

The ruffians of Southern Saxony had always held the Indian armies in contempt. In one of the greatest battles of all times the princes of the Andhra and the Karnata country had destroyed the Saxon pride that had swelled in the great invasion of India in the year of 2001 under Emperor of all Saxony, Slit-Eyes. In the battle Chennai the prince of Mumbai had put to sword the Southern Saxon army. Then there had been the African raids where the power of Saxony had demolished the Hindus in the final skirmish. That was followed by skirmishes in India where the Saxons had prevailed again.
Then came the great Indian invasion of the Southern continent. General Hayden had already sounded his bugle and shown his ferocity in the conquest of the renegade African principality of Saxons. He issued many an ominous warning to the invading Indian force. As the first skirmishes occurred the Indian advance pickets were routinely repulsed by ordinary Saxon scouts. Then the first great battle was joined. Gen. Hayden fired his heavy artillery and the aerial bombardment from the Emperor of Saxony, Slit-eyes was heavy. The rain and the mire confused the Indian ranks further, but the weak Indian Raja from Vanga suddenly flared up gunning away on the Saxon ranks and repulsing them decisively. The two armies then retreated to avoid further damage and reserve their fury for more decisive encounter in the Southern tip of the Southern continent.

The great battle began with a ferocious charge of Prince Ponting almost sinking the Indian ranks for good. With the great prince of Mumbai tottering under the bombardment and the Vanga Raja falling shortly thereafter we believed that the Indian invasion had been terminated prematurely. But what followed was an unbelievable assault from the Hindu ranks rallying under the Princes of Banglore and Hyderabad. Together with the Maharatta auxillaries that were fleeing from the fall of the Bombay ruler, they axed Slit-eyes, Gen. Hayden and Prince Ponting. Finally, they prevailed in the death struggle which was fought with bare hands and strangled the Saxon thugs. With that the saffron Hindu flag flew over the bleak wastes of the Southern Continent. The final frontier had finally been crossed. It layed to rest the myths of Saxon mint.

1 ball, 2 wickets, 12-man team! New ICC plan

London, May 15: The top governing body of cricket, the International Cricket Council, has bowled a googly with its new set of ‘innovations’. ICC’s Cricket Committee on Playing has recommended domestic trials of innovations through which <b>two batsmen could be dismissed off the same ball and the batting teams could dictate when the field restrictions would apply in limited overs matches</b>.

The radical changes are part of a number of recommendations made by the committee after it met in Dubai, a statement from the game’s governing body said here on Saturday.

The experiments would have to be approved by the chief executives of the Test playing nations who are to meet here in June before these are implemented. Other important changes suggested include playing 12-member teams with different batting and bowling elevens in a one-day match. This means Saurav Ganguly and other captains can pack their side with seven batsmen and still have five specialist bowlers.

And scrapping of overthrows as a result of the ball rebounding from a batsman’s body or bat while allowing extra runs arising out of the ball hitting the stumps has also been suggested. A typical instance of ‘double-play’ to be trialed would be an appeal for leg before and the umpire considering it while the batsmen steal a single; then the appeal is upheld while at the same time a fielder runs the non-striker out.

The batsmen will also gain more advantage over the bowlers in the shorter version of the game as they will have the liberty of dictating the opposition in which over to apply the field restrictions. Moreover, the restrictions need not be in 15 successive overs. The committee, chaired by Sunil Gavaskar, also suggested that the minimum number of overs in a one-day international be reduced to 20 from 25.

In ODIs where the play begins on a reserve day, there shall be no re-toss or change in eleven made on the first day unless the two captains arrive at an agreement. Tests and one-day internationals which are abandoned without a ball being bowled may be included in records provided the toss has been made.

With regard to play time lost in Tests, it may be made up on the same day by extending play upto an hour and on subsequent days by upto half an hour but at no point of time more than one hour of extra time may be played on any one day.

Clause 16 of Test playing conditions may also be amended so as to make it clear that in the event of playing time lost for any reason, it should be time lost that has to be made up and not overs lost.

Cant the umps simply call a chucked ball a chucked ball ? Bhajji's take on Murali affair..

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Murali treatment unfair: Harbhajan

May 24, 2004 20:51 IST

Rallying behind fellow off-spinner Muthiah Muralitharan, Harbhajan Singh said it was unfair to question the Sri Lankan after he had perched himself as the highest Test wicket-taker.

"It's not fair to question a bowler after he has played for so many years and taken over 520 wickets. If you have a problem, question him at the start of his career," Harbhajan Singh told a television channel.

"It is difficult to take 500 wickets even in 'gully' cricket. Murali has taken so many in Test cricket and even then he has to face such allegations. I don't think it is right," said the bowler, who has recovered from the finger injury that kept him out of international cricket for the past five months.

Murali's 'doosra'—an off spinner's wrong 'un—has been prohibited by the International Cricket Council.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Per ICC, Murali chucks while bowling doosra so Murali should not bowl doosra.
Per Shivlal Yadav, you *cannot* bowl a doosra without bending your arm - aka chucking. Other bowlers who 'bowl' a doosra - Suck-lame and Bhajji.
Per Howard, Aussi PM, Murali is Chucker.
Per SriLankan PM, this is a national issue and they r going to sue ICC.
Per Indian ambassador to SL, India will lend its support to SL on Murali affair..
Per Murali, he will boycott Aus tour.

Lanka grooming a second Murali

Thursday, 03 June , 2004, 12:20

Colombo: Cricket officials have begun eyeing a 17-year-old school boy who has the potential to replace Sri Lanka's spin wizard and top Test wicket-taker Muttiah Muralitharan, Colombo based newspaper Daily Mirror , reported on Thursday.
Student Sameera Ranatunga, who hails from the same Kandy region where Muralitharan grew up, was being groomed by his school's cricket coach to follow the footsteps of the great man, and become a deadly off-spinner, the report said.

"The young off-spinner is showing much promise and turns the ball as much as Muttiah Muralitharan does, by following a similar action," the newspaper said.

Ranatunga, who is not related to Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup winning captain Arjuna, is being guided by the same coach who spotted Muralitharan's talent, when he was a schoolboy in Kandy, the paper said.

Paki liar Imran vs Botham <!--emo&:liar liar--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/liar.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='liar.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Botham had said that he had been unaware of tampering until the Pakistan tour in 1992 when the <!--emo&Confusedtupid--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pakee.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pakee.gif' /><!--endemo--> bowlers were gouging the ball to give it reverse swing

Apparently, Imran had been on the receiving end of "intemperate and vicious attacks" in the press by both Botham and Lamb <b>after admitting he once scratched a ball with a bottle top</b> when he played for Sussex. Lamb had accused Imran of teaching Pakistani fast-bowlers how to scuff the ball to perfect reverse swing, and Botham told the jury he felt Lamb's article was "fully justified"

<b>NO SERIES WITH LOTASTAAN IN 2004 : DALMIYA</b> <!--emo&:ind--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/india.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='india.gif' /><!--endemo-->

DUBAI, June 9: <b>Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of a One-day series against Pakistan in India or Sharjah this year, saying there was no time to squeezing in any new fixtures. <!--emo&:thumbsup--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbup.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='thumbup.gif' /><!--endemo-->

"We are hard-pressed to sort out our own commitments this year," Dalmiya said on his arrival here to take part in an ICC meeting, clearly indicating that any series with Pakistan was out of the question.</b> <!--emo&:clapping--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clap.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='clap.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Pakistani daily The News had reported that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was keen on its senior team touring India for a One-day series before embarking on a tour of Australia in December.

Alternately, the PCB would like a limited overs series with India in Sharjah, the paper said on Wednesday.

It quoted sources in the PCB as saying that chairman Shaharyar Khan and chief executive Rameez Raja were keen on a commitment for the senior team in November <!--emo&Confusedtupid--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pakee.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pakee.gif' /><!--endemo-->

"The idea is to either convince the BCCI to enable Pakistan's participation in a One-day series in India or to ask the Cricketers Benefit Fund Series (CBFS) to organise a tournament," The News quoted the source as saying.

Dalmiya also said that the only way India could accommodate South Africa's tour of India this year was by splitting the Test and One-day series.

"We have only the month of November available later this year and only a Test series could be squeezed in. The One-dayers could be played later," Dalmiya said.

The United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) has expressed unhappiness over the itinerary submitted by India, saying the Indians were indifferent towards the tour.

<b>Dalmiya said India were due to host world champions Australia for four Tests between October 1 and November 7, while South Africa host England from December 5</b>

The “Begging” Lotastaanis continuously “Beg” for more Cricket Matches to earn more Money. Without India the Lotastaanis hardly see any “Greeenery”.

If the Lotastaanis need to “Practice” then they can have more matches with Afghanistan, Bhookhanangadesh, UAE, Kazakhstan, Kyrgizstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan especially since the Lotastaanis consider themselves to be of Central Asian Republics Origin.

I am sure all these countries would accommodate the Lotastaani Criket Team
