New Delhi, Nov. 20: The BJP, now insistent on Parliament discussing Nandigram, had in 2002 been reluctant to put the Gujarat violence to vote in the national legislature but had to yield ground.

The CPM, which has agreed to the House discussing Nandigram after days of resistance but not to a vote, had five years ago been gung-ho about a vote on the Gujarat violence.

Neither party sees any parallel between the two events. The BJP argues that the Gujarat riots, when it says 300 people died in police firing, cannot be compared to Nandigram where political rivals are being killed with the police lately turning spectators.

The CPM says the Gujarat violence endangered India’s secularism and therefore was a national concern whereas Nandigram is a law-and-order problem and therefore Bengal’s internal matter.

In 2002, the CPM would not even accept that Gujarat was India’s internal matter when some foreign countries expressed unfavourable views.

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, then an ordinary CPM member of Parliament, had said: “The government says they (foreign nations) have no right to discuss our internal matter. But since when (have the) killing of innocent human beings, rape of women, burning of people alive, slitting open the stomach of (an) expectant mother and the killing of an unborn child (been) treated as internal matters of a country?”

When the Godhra fire happened on February 27, 2002, and communal killings started the next day, Parliament was in its budget session. The political parties had reacted cautiously till a parliamentary delegation visited Gujarat and came back with a strong suspicion of the state government’s complicity.

The Lok Sabha debated the matter on March 11 under Rule 193, which does not entail voting. Then, on April 30, a censure motion under Rule 184, which requires voting, was allowed in the Lok Sabha despite the ruling combine’s reluctance.

As the marathon discussions went past midnight, the BJP kept trying behind the scenes to avoid a vote. The Prime Minister of the day, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, made an emotional intervention, saying he didn’t want a divided House because Gujarat was not a majority-minority (of Parliament members) question.

The Opposition advised Vajpayee to move a resolution that could be unanimously adopted but the Centre could not accept the language proposed by the Congress and the Left.

The government knew the motion would be defeated in the Lok Sabha, as it was, but wanted a compromise since the National Democratic Alliance was in a minority in the Rajya Sabha.

The Upper House adopted a motion, under Rule 170 which requires voting, urging the Centre to intervene effectively in Gujarat under Article 355 of the Constitution. The government had to send a directive to the state government.

Gujarat was debated in both the Houses on other occasions, too. The most significant was the adjournment motion on November 18, 2002, because that also required voting.

The BJP’s problem with voting was that its allies, such as the Janata Dal (United), Telugu Desam Party, National Conference and the Trinamul Congress, felt uneasy voting with the BJP on such an issue. Although they never voted for the Opposition’s motion, their members criticised the BJP and even staged walkouts.

Commenting on the plight of the people of Nandigram, he said, “People are distraught and living in such fear that they cannot even tell their names. I didn’t see such intense fear psychosis even during the deadly tsunami of 2004.” He added that plight of victims was worse than that of what he saw in war-ravaged Iraq.

Sri Sri emphasised that the need of the hour is to restore confidence among the victims. The Art of Living has already started the process of alleviating the trauma by conducting pranyama and meditation camps, he said. “Several yuvacharya or youth leaders of the Art of Living are working in the area.” The Art of Living is also running three schools in Nandigram, Sonachura and Maheshtala, where all other schools have closed their doors.

Sri Sri also urged the government to offer suitable compensations to the victims.

Abducted Nandigram youth narrates harrowing experience

It was around 1 pm on November 14 when Golam, an agriculturist, was busy with his meal, but the food remained stuck in his mouth as the bikes came to a halt on the dirt road in front of his house.

He was called out and a gun-toting biker asked Golam to come with him. Golam, who managed to set himself free from the clutches of his abductors, revealed that he was forced to ride pillion on one of the motorbikes and was taken to Jhamka in Khejuri.

From there he was taken to Rasulpur on the banks of a river. The 30-year-old youth saw 11 others who had been allegedly abducted from different places and brought there.

Around midnight, Golam and the others were put on a motor launch with armed people wearing red head bands around their heads, guarding them. "The next day around noon, the launch stopped at an unknown place and we were taken to a nearby jungle, where we were made to sit in a line with the armed men keeping a watch on us," Golam narrated.

"After sometime, making an excuse of relieving myself, I walked to a nearby bush and then started running for my life. They chased me, but I kept on running and after about an hour, I managed to give them the slip and reached a metalled road," he said.

"I was gasping for breath when I saw a truck coming down the road. I managed to flag it down in the nick of time and boarded it. I suspect that we had been taken to some place in Orissa, but as I was too afraid and also tired after running for miles, I could not ask the driver the name of the place where I boarded," Golam said.

He said that he was dropped off by the driver at Cuttack. "With only Rs 3 in my pocket, I could only call up a neighbour in my village from a PCO and I asked him to call me back. After he called back, I narrated my plight and gave him my location," he said.

"The neighbour informed my father, who sent some relatives who brought me to the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee Nandigram relief camp," Golam said adding, he could not dare to go back home.

"However, feeling unsafe at the camp also due to the presence of Communist Part of India-Marxist cadres around the area, I have now shifted to a new place in Contai, about 40 km from my village," he said but refused to disclose the address fearing that he might be abducted again.

"I don't know the fate of the other 11 who were abducted and taken to that jungle along with me," he said. Golam filed a complaint of abduction with the Nandigram police station on Wednesday.

East Midnapore District Sperintendent of Police S S Panda confirmed that a case of abduction has been filed. Though no enquiry has yet been started, the SP said, "I feel he had himself gone away to Cuttack."

While it is true that most of the victims of the Marxist mayhem in Nandigram are Muslims -- the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind claims 30,000 Muslim villagers have been rendered homeless and have had to take shelter in make-shift camps -- that does not justify mobs going on the rampage in Kolkata's Muslim-dominated areas. It is the gross abuse of power and shocking display of lawlessness by the CPI(M) that have caused widespread revulsion against the Marxists and sympathy for their hapless victims</b>. Of course, the CPI(M) has only itself to blame for the mess and anarchy that have begun to engulf West Bengal.<b> The Left Front Government it leads does not command any authority and has abdicated its responsibilities and constitutional obligations, allowing the party to set up a state within the state. </b>The police force has been rendered useless, as was demonstrated, though not for the first time, when it failed to fob off the lumpen elements who took over the streets of central Kolkata, running riot without any hindrance. By pandering to the lowest common denominator of the community and the clergy in the name of 'secular politics', the CPI(M) has emboldened them to a point where they believe they are above the law of the land. In a sense, Wednesday's violence reflects the pathetic state of governance in West Bengal; the CPI(M) has at last met its comeuppance with Muslims paying the party back, to quote Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, "in its own coin". NEW DELHI: Taking exception to the action of Kolkata Police, CRPF has alleged that they released an influential CPM worker who was detained by the para-military force for threatening people in a village at Nandigram.

According to CRPF sources, the CRPF jawans picked up Anup Mondal, an hardcore CPM worker, from his house in Sonachura area of Nandigram for allegedly threatening the people in his locality.

Mondal was handed over to the local police where they came to know that five cases were registered against him in Nandigram police station which included two pertaining to murder and the rest for serious rioting.

However, to the utter surprise of the CRPF, the Kolkata police merely informed them that Mondal had since been released without assigning any reason for the action leaving the para-military force fuming. The CRPF shot off a letter to the headquarters detailing the incident, the sources said.

Senior CRPF officials have been complaining that police were not picking up or detaining any of the influential CPM workers who allegedly indulged in threatening the people around the area.

The CRPF has also sought permission from the local Superintendent of Police for setting up camps in Chojopuri and Barakpura in Nandigram but so far the local administration was silent on the request.

The CRPF, deployed to instill confidence among the people and restore normalcy in violence-hit Nandigram, has accused the West Bengal Police of non-cooperation, saying such an attitude would delay return of peace in the area. 

Amid blame game<span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>, CRPF DIG Alok Raj, supervising the operations of the paramilitary force in trouble-torn area, has proceeded on leave alleging non-cooperation from the State Government. </span>

The CRPF had on Wednesday apprehended a local CPI(M) leader Anup Mondal and handed him over to the police. On Thursday, the CRPF apprehended another CPI(M) activist Krishna Ghorai from Brindaban Chowk and took him to the police station.

However, <b>the local police did not register any case and set them free ostensibly under instructions from the State administration. </b>

"When we took Ghorai to the police station, we were told that Mondal had been released. When we asked why, the police said they had instructions from the higher up," Raj told an agency.

Both Mondal and Ghorai had been apprehended on charges of intimidating people returning to their homes from the relief camps, the sources said, adding that several other cases of serious nature were also pending against Mondal.

The National Commission for Minorities has found that there were two specific cases of rape of minor girls in the trouble-torn Nandigram block in West Bengal.

<b>Sources in the NCM said that two girls, aged 14 and 16, who were allegedly raped in front of their mothers, have been missing from their homes since November 6.

The investigations into the rapes and other atrocities on women were not progressing because of the "laxity" on the part of the administration, said the Commission. </b>

The findings of Commission member Harcharan Singh Josh, who visited the area, will put the CPM Government on a spot over the issue of protection of the rights of minorities. The NCM team also found that atrocities had been committed on Muslim "farmers and peasants" in the area, allegedly with the support of the police and administration.

There were many cases of "loots" in the area too, said the Commission.

Among others, Josh had met Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, bureaucrats, residents and members of various organisations, during his visit. NCM chairman Mohd Shafi Qureshi said the report presented by its member will be taken for discussion and it will ask state and Central Governments to take necessary steps.

<b>"There have been lapses on part of the state Government. It seems all was pre-planned and executed with the connivance of the government," Qureshi said. </b>

When contacted, Josh told The Indian Express: "Whatever the chairman speaks, is the stand of the NCM and I have nothing more to add".

CPM rattled by partners' revolt
Embroiled with a plethora of political problems -- from alleged suicide of Rizwanur, Nandigram, and Taslima Nasreen -- CPI(M)'s Polit Bureau meeting beginning on Monday will come up with more conciliatory strategy to win over the dissenting Left Front partners.

Party insiders said that the emergency Polit Bureau meeting will tell the Left Front partners not to precipitate the situation by publicly censuring CPI(M).

But Nandigram will be on top of the agenda. The West Bengal Governor's repeated unfavourable statements and his tough stand on Nandigram during his last week's meeting with President Pratibha Patil and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has added to party's frustration. The PB will also take up the way the LF partners have spoken in divided voices over the Nandigram violence.

The PB will also review the Kerala situation where PB member Pinarayi Vijayan is facing a high-level inquiry for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore scam.

According to sources, what has worried the CPI(M) leadership is that while it has persuaded the Congress at the Centre not to embarrass the party on Nandigram or Rizwanur issues, but so far it has not been able to win over the Left Front partners.

Last month CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat had requested CPI general secretary AB Bardhan to persuade the dissenting Left Front partners, like, RSP and Forward Bloc leaders to give up their anti-CPI(M) attacks on the issue of Nandigram.

Five mutilated and half-burnt bodies were found on Wednesday buried in a trench in a field at Bidyapith village in the Communist Party of India-Marxist stronghold of Khejuri, adjacent to Nandigram [Images] in West Bengal.

"We had a tip off that five bodies were buried at the spot. We along with a team of Central Reserve Police Force and CBI went there and found the bodies, but cannot dig them out without a magistrate's order," Midnapore (East) Superintendent of Police S S Panda said.

He said the bodies found in the trench in a field covered with bushes were half-burnt and mutilated.

"We are waiting for the magistrate's order and once it comes we will exhume the bodies and send them for post-mortem," Panda said.

The SP was not sure about the identity of the bodies.

CPIM bangal unit's head of goons Buddhadeb Bhattacharya's mention of Anand Math, on 15th anniversary of Ayodhya episode, brought to memory this dark chapter of Communist's bloody history of rule over bengal. Only this year the 25th anniversary of that event was held as Dadhichi Divas in Kolkata. If anyone thinks that communists are ruling the state thru democracy - they are living in fantacyland.

On 30th April, 1982, Kolkata city had witnessed another Godhra - the mass lynching of 16 saffron clad sannyasi and one sannyasin of Anand Marg. In the broad day light, right in front of the onlooking public, Communist goons dragged these sannyasi-s who had come to Kolkata to attend a gurukul function, first beat them unconcious and finally burnt them alive near Bijon Setu flyover. Since then 30th April is observed every year as Dadhichi Divas in Kolkata by the sannyasis of Anand Marg.

No one has ever been arrested or even charged for the crime.

Why did they do it? Anand Marg had become too popular, was taking away from the followers of communists and openly challenging the communism (and islamism). It was eradicating the so called caste system and was silently spreading the vedic message in the same rural areas, revolutionizing it in different way, which commies wanted to use as their laboratory for bloody revolution.

Sustained propoganda against Anand Marg by commies over last two decades (Purulia arms drop being blamed on them being only one of those) has reversed the strengths of AM.

So can anybody dare challenge communists in Bengal through lawful means?

We can only hope that sacrifice of Dadhichi - the sage who donated his bones for making Vajra to demolish the demons - will truely bear fruits in Bangal too.

Vajra can be made, but really Indra is missing, I feel, to take on these asuras.

The 15th anniversary of West Bengal's biggest ever case of mass lynching was observed here on Wednesday by monks of the Ananda Marg even as the Jyoti Basu government continues to conceal the facts on the gruesome killing from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

On the morning of April 30, 1982, 16 Ananda Marg monks and a nun were dragged out of taxis that were taking them to an educational conference at their headquarters in Tiljala in the city's southern suburbs.

At three spots simultaneously, they were beaten to death and then set on fire. All this was watched by thousands of people. Yet, to this day, not a single arrest has been made.

Finally, in late 1996, the NHRC decided to take up the investigation of the case.

But without the West Bengal government's cooperation it cannot go far. Already two reminders have been sent but the Basu government has not responded.

Meanwhile, an LAS officer of the West Bengal cadre, Sher Singh has stirred a hornet's nest by offering to reveal the facts of the case along with relevant documents. Singh was additional district magistrate of 24 Parganas at the time of the incident and claimed to the Central Administration Tribunal (CAT) in his petition
(No.1108 of 1994) that he was victimised for his refusal to toe the Marxist government's line on the case and suspended.

Singh has informed the CAT that since he is bound by the Official Secrets Act he can only reveal the full facts if demanded by the "competent authority". However peppered all over his petition are hints that the lynching was carefully planned and executed by Marxist cadres over a land dispute with the Marg. The Marxists had
feared the Margis would upstage their domination in the Kasba belt which was at that time a base for the CPI(M).

The West Bengal government claimed after the incident that the Margis were lynched by an irate mob.

Krishnagar, Dec. 7: The CPM in Nadia has described Iskcon (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) as a “major threat” to communists.

A document published on the occasion of the recent district party conference says Iskcon helps “communal forces” like “the RSS and the BJP”.

The Congress has been accused of “hobnobbing” with the religious group headquartered in Nabadwip, 100km from Calcutta, for support.

“Organisations like the RSS and some NGOs are fanning communal passions in the district,” says the document drafted by CPM district secretary Ashu Ghosh.

“Our local leaders have been campaigning against Iskcon activities for years. We have compiled information on Iskcon on the basis of reports from our local leaders and sent it to higher authorities in the party,” Ghosh told The Telegraph.

In the chapter “Birodhi Shaktir Biruddhe Larai (Fight against opposition forces)”, the document says: “Iskcon-er bhumika kromosho bipajjanak hoye uthchhey (The role of Iskcon is gradually becoming dangerous).”

Ramesh Das, the Iskcon publicity manager, wondered “why the CPM has branded us like this after ruling the state for 30-odd years”.

He said several communist leaders like politburo member Sitaram Yechury and Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar have not only visited its temples but also stayed over. “We were delighted to host them.”  {They should learn fast the history of Commies rather than be delighted.}

Das added: “We want to convey for their (the CPM’s) information that we have devotees from all walks of life and from all over the world.”

The CPM denied the claim about its leaders staying there. “I’ve never heard of it,” said veteran leader Benoy Konar.

The Nadia CPM had earlier accused Iskcon of acquiring around 500 acres in Mayapur in the name of small NGOs to bypass the land ceiling law. Acting on its report, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee asked his land minister to conduct a probe.

Minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah came to Nadia for the inquiry, following which the government shot down the proposal for a Rs 500-crore vedic village planned by Iskcon devotee and Henry Ford’s grandson Alfred Ford.

The latest document, distributed among senior leaders of the district during the November 30-December 2 conference, says Iskcon has become an “agent of the Congress, Trinamul Congress and the BJP”.

“It has established itself as a major force against communists here.”

Party sources said the conference discussed the issue in the presence of state secretary Biman Bose and industries minister Nirupam Sen.

Nandigram, Dec 10: After the discovery of graves at Bidyapit village at Khejuri and Talpati canal, another grave was found on Monday near the former Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh committee stronghold of Maheshpur in Nandigram, police said.

"We found a new grave at Parulbari village near Maheshpur today. The police and CRPF have cordoned off the area," superintendent of police, Midnapore (East), Satyeswar Panda said.

"This is a freshly dug grave. We cannot dig it unless we get court orders," Panda said.

On December five, CRPF had found five graves from Bidyapith village in the CPI(M) stronghold of Khejuri from where charred human bones and skulls were dug out the next day. The remains were sent to the central forensic science laboratory for examination.

The CBI had recovered more bones from another grave at Talpati canal at Bhangabera in Nandigram around the same time

Lakshmipriya Das, wife of veteran freedom fighter Brajalal Das, has alleged that the CRPF had searched her residence without reason.

An FIR has been lodged at the Khejuri police station on the basis of the allegation and the matter was being investigated, the chief minister said.

He said 642 rounds of bullets, 24 kg of explosives, 72 detonators, two mines, six country-made guns, three rifles, six spares of pipe-guns among others were seized during joint raids by the CRPF in Nandigram.
