In Tamil Nadu there are 34 engineering colleges, which are owned by politicians who are known opponents of the DMK.

AIADMK loyalist and education baron Jeppiaar is DMK’s worst rival who owns Jeppiaar Engineering College, Panimalar Engineering College and St Joseph's Engineering College in the state. One more college on the list is Andal Azhagar College in Chennai owned by actor turned MLA Vijaykanth—a lone but strong opponent of the DMK government. The actor's marriage hall was earlier demolished the DMK chief.

मुंबई (न.प्र.) : शिवसेना की कैंपस शाखा भारतीय विद्यार्थी सेना ने बॉम्बे विश्वविद्यालय के चुनावों में कांग्रेस समर्थित नैशनल स्टूडेंट्स यूनियन को काफी पीछे छोड़ दिया है और स्टूडेंट काउंसिल के अध्यक्ष पद पर कब्जा जमा लिया है। विद्यार्थी सेना ने महासचिव पद भी हथिया लिया है। संदेश वाडेकर स्टूडेंट्स काउंसिल के अध्यक्ष चुने गये हैं, जबकि महासचिव पद पर अलीया बेग निर्वाचित हुई हैं।

उल्लेखनीय है कि भारतीय विद्यार्थी सेना ने दोनों पदों के लिए 10 वोट हासिल किए, जबकि प्रतिद्वंद्वियों को एक भी वोट नहीं मिला। परिसर से एनएसयूआई की सत्ता समाप्त करने के लिए विद्यार्थी सेना ने वामपंथी विद्यार्थी संगठन समतावादी छात्र भारती से गठजोड़ किया था।

Perform or exit, Congress tells Koda

Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda seems to have run afoul of the Congress, which has vented its ire over his style of governance and given him an ultimatum to shape up. "We cannot bear the shortcomings of the Koda Government. Koda should either perform or make way for others," said Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu State Congress president to reporters on Thursday.

He said, "If the Chief Minister finds himself unable to improve the prevailing situation in the State then he should make way for others. The long pending demands including announcement of Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) policy, preparing a draft of the Common Minimum Program (CMP) and other things are yet to be announced."

The Congress is unhappy with the worsening law and order situation, power scenario, and bad road conditions of the State. Businessmen, traders and common people are routinely killed. In the last 15 days, 18 persons were killed in Chilkhari village of Giridih district by Maoist rebels and Sreeleather owner Ashish Dey was killed in Jamshedpur.

"Koda is an independent legislator but we are accountable to the people. The power, road, law and order situation has worsened during Koda's tenure and the Congress will face the ire of the people in the elections," a senior Congress leader said. Congress unhappiness could be known from the State that it boycotted the UPA meeting on Tuesday.

Even Congress president Sonia Gandhi seemed to be unhappy with the performance of the Koda Government. Early this week Koda was in New Delhi and he tried to meet Sonia Gandhi but did not get an audience with the Congress president. Koda, according to sources, wanted to invite Sonia Gandhi for the seventh anniversary of the establishment of the State on November 15.

Even the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), another key ally is unhappy with the State Government. "Ministers and bureaucrats are hampering development work in the State," State UPA convener and JMM chief Shibu Soren said.

An honest Government with sound economic policy and a good law and order record can beat anti-incumbency
The return of Mr Narendra Modi as Chief Minister of Gujarat has a historic significance far beyond the debates about his election. Go back to Japan at the end of World War II in 1945, China on the morrow of Mao Zedong's successful revolution in 1949 and India's independence in 1947. At that stage of time, Indian economy compared favourably with that of Japan and China. No doubt, the Japanese had a tradition of technology but then their economy had been devastated by war.

China under Mao's rule continued to trail behind in techno-economic progress. In contrast, Japan swept ahead and within decades became the second largest economy in the world. Nehruvian India could take satisfaction from the fact that China had lagged behind.

However, with the advent of Deng Xiaoping in 1978, China underwent a revolution in state policy; the objective shifted from providing for the equal needs of everyone to encouraging the blossoming of anyone's ability. Ideology was given a backseat with the words: So long as it catches mice, no matter whether the cat is black or white. In less than 25 years, the yellow giant had overtaken Japan as the world's second largest economy that left India little to console itself for trailing behind both the Asian giants.

Jawaharlal Nehru had a vision for modernity. He certainly had economic dreams but he did not have the aptitude of a mega manager who could ensure that the dreams came true. Bidhan Roy, too, tried to modernise West Bengal but the red trade unions ensured that he did not go far.

<b>Pratap Singh Kairon laid the foundations of a vibrant Punjab, but his family's corruption came in the way of his endeavours</b>. Bansi Lal of Haryana, too, made an impact but not a long enough one. Mr Chandrababu Naidu went out of his way to bring up Hyderabad but the rural populace of Andhra Pradesh felt neglected.

None of these men, however, displayed an understanding of what makes an economy tick, nor did they have the managerial ability to deliver the goods. Except for Bidhan Chandra Roy, no one could keep his head above corruption. Mr Modi and Gujarat have shown the promise that they have the comprehensive qualities necessary for bringing about a prosperity revolution.

Entrepreneurs do not invest because they are feted or flattered. They invest because they smell the probability of profit. The first sine qua non of profit is the assurance of law and order. The second is quick decision-making by those in Government and the absence of corruption by politicians as well as bureaucrats. The environment should be business-friendly and certainly free from local extortionists.

The availability of power and water are obvious necessities as are good roads. The State need not do much more than to ensure these essentials. How many States in India can claim to provide them? How many Governments appreciate the value of this total package as an attraction for entrepreneurs to risk their goodwill and money?

Even if some States do, do they inspire the confidence that they would fulfill what they promise? For example, will West Bengal seem credible about promising to make the State free from trade union agitations? Will Uttar Pradesh and Bihar inspire faith about freeing the State from extortionists?

The state can be neither impartial nor fair unless its Government is free from corruption. Gujarat has not suffered from this malady at the upper levels since Mr Modi became Chief Minister in 2001. As an example of clean Government, take the State PSUs which are about 50 in number.<b> After his re-election in 2002, Mr Modi appointed one Kamal Patel as head of the tourism body. Otherwise, he did not appoint any MLA or politician as chairman. The traditional practice until then was that an MLA was either a Minister or a PSU chairman. He was often also an upward conduit of money which was milked from the undertaking. </b>

<b>Another example of Mr Modi's governance was the refusal of the Gujarat Electricity Board to supply power to those farmers who did not pay their bills. It was not easy to stand up to the pressures especially when it is believed across the country one way to remain in power is to overlook non-payment of electricity bills by farmers. As it happens, the two big leakages of State treasuries are PSUs and electricity boards. </b>

When the Asian tigers were acclaimed for their economic miracles, the apologists of Nehruvianism dismissed them as small countries which could not be compared with the giant that was India. The Japanese marvel was ignored on the pretext that the country had an industrial infrastructure that was developed since the Meiji Restoration of 1861. The Chinese success was attributed to its dictatorship! Now that Gujarat has shown the way, what would be the excuse for the other States as well as the Centre to justify their lackadaisical management of the economy?

<b>It is seldom realised that the single greatest threat to the integrity of the Indian Union would be the backwardness of large States. That Uttar Pradesh has failed to raise taxes enough to run its routine revenue expenditure and then asking subsidies from the Finance Commission is indeed unacceptable. If such a large and fertile state happens to be subsidised, the Tamil youth of tomorrow might ask: What does his State gain by remaining within the Indian Union? </b>

It is noteworthy that of all the 60 years since independence we have been governed by prime ministers hailing from UP for 44 years. Eight out of our 13 prime ministers have hailed from this India's largest state.

'Gujaratva' should be used as an example of development by most States. The message from Gandhinagar is timely, loud and clear.

Lalu's two sons beaten up for 'eve-teasing'

New Delhi: Two sons of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad got into trouble for allegedly indulging in eve-teasing on New Year's Eve and were beaten up by unidentified youths in south Delhi.

In the scuffle, a Personal Security Officer accompanying Prasad's sons — Tarun and Tejpal — lost his service pistol, for which a complaint has been filed in the local police station.

<b>Police sources said a preliminary probe revealed that Prasad's sons had allegedly indulged in eve-teasing first at Ashoka Hotel and later at Connaught Place.</b>

From there, the two, accompanied by the PSOs of Delhi Police and Railway Protection Force, decided to attend a party at Chhatarpur area on Delhi-Haryana border.

<b>On their return, they allegedly passed some remarks at girls who were partying at a farm house near Mehrauli.</b>

However, this time they ran short on luck when a group of youngsters decided to thrash them. The PSOs, sensing the gravity of the situation, did not reveal the identity of the two, the sources said.

Nursing bruises, Tarun and Tajpal were rushed to a hospital where they were provided first-aid, the sources said, adding at that stage the PSO realised that his service pistol had gone missing in the scuffle.

A case under charges of assaulting a police official and of a missing weapon has been registered.

Lucknow, Jan. 5: In what appears to be a knee-jerk reaction to her party’s defeat in Ballia, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and UP Chief Minister Mayawati has dissolved all brahmin and vaishya Bhaichara Samitis. These Bhaichara Samitis were set up last year to bring the "upper castes", particularly brahmins and vaishyas, closer to the BSP. Ms Mayawati told her party workers that the Bhaichara Samitis would be reconstituted later.

The Chief Minister has also announced an organisational reshuffle in the UP unit of her party. She has appointed Mr Naseemuddin Siddiqui, Mr K.K. Gautam, Mr Munkad Ali and Mr Jugul Kishore as party coordinators in the state. Brahmin leaders have not been appointed coordinators and this is designed to give a clear message to the dalits, who have been feeling slighted at the growing influence of brahmins within the BSP.

However, two brahmin leaders — Mr Ram Veer Upadhyaya (minister) and Mr Brijesh Pathak (MP) — were given places in the committee appointed to review the party’s performance in the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections. At a party meeting, Ms Mayawati also criticised the brahmin leaders, holding them responsible for party’s debacle in the Ballia byelection. She took the brahmin leaders to task for the poor BSP performance in Ballia.

NEW MAP: The UPA government is redrawing boundaries of the existing states.

New Delhi: CNN IBN has learnt that the UPA government is close to redrawing state boundaries.
It is accepting recommedations of the 2nd state reorganisation commission.

A reorganisation of states could mean the most populous state in the country is trifurcated into three separate states.

So there may be no Uttar Pradesh any longer. Harit Pradesh from Western Uttar Pradesh, the Avadh area around Lucknow making up central Uttar Pradesh and Purvachal out of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Interestingly, UP Chief Minister Mayawati has been all for trifurcation of the state into three parts.

“Our government is in support of trifurcation. It will send the legislation to the government,” says Mayawati.

Maharashtra too could face a division, with Vidharbha being carved out of the Western State.

The Congress and the BJP have tried to play down the idea of a separate Vidarbha state, while the Shiv Sena has consistently opposed the demand.

The Darjeeling hill in West Bengal is another possibility, a proposal the ruling Left Front, especially the CPI-M is not expected to take to kindly.

Then there is Telengana in Andhra Pradesh, with the Congress looking to woo the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and its head Chandrasekhara Rao.

“It is for the government to make any announcement in this regard. But one must also not forget that historically it has been Congress regimes who have created new states for the interest of economic efficiency, local feeling etc,” says

The southern states were created on the linguistic basis. Now the Congress believes that by reorganising the states again.

The stranglehold of many regional politicians such as Mayawati could be broken.

<b>Gowda mum on suicide</b><!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Bangalore, Jan. 10: A 22-year-old committed suicide after his car bumped into H.D. Deve Gowda’s SUV yesterday, but the former Prime Minister appeared unmoved.

“Accidents happen. Don’t make it a big issue. Our leader is not responsible for it,” Janata Dal (S) workers said. “I don’t want to speak about this issue,” Gowda sent word.

N. Ramesh, a commerce graduate who manufactured hollow cement bricks, was driving the Maruti 800 he had bought a year ago when it hit the blue Chevrolet Forester ferrying Gowda to one of his family’s numerous houses in Padmanabha Nagar around 11am. The bumper of the SUV was dislodged.

The former Prime Minister’s securitymen jumped out to upbraid Ramesh, and let him go after Gowda intervened. “It’s a minor accident, let the boy go,” witnesses quoted him as saying.

<b>But around 3pm, some 20 Dal (S) workers and the SUV driver arrived at Ramesh’s house in the same locality and allegedly demanded Rs 25,000 to make good the damage. The scared family members paid them Rs 10,000.</b>

<b>Ramesh was chided by his family for getting embroiled with a “political heavyweight”. The youth, who had never been booked by traffic police, locked himself in his room. His sister-in-law found him hanging from the fan around 5.30pm.</b>

Police have registered a case of unnatural death and none for abetment of suicide. “No one has complained in this case. I can only confirm there was a minor traffic accident earlier and the boy committed suicide later,” DCP (south) Alok Kumar said.

The family has refused to accept Rs 1 lakh offered as “compensation” by Dal (S) workers last night.

“We declined the compensation offered by some political workers as any amount of money will not bring my dead brother back. We did not register a police complaint as we do not want trouble with politicians,” his brother Harish said after the funeral.
