Syro-Malabar Bishops knock on Sonia’s door
By B Sreejan - www.expressbuzz.com

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It may be a strange coincidence. At a time when the sleuths from the Central Bureau of Investigation are interrogating the Knanaya Catholic bishops in the state regarding the Sr Abhaya murder case, two senior Syro-Malabar bishops left for Delhi with a mission to meet UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

Sources close to the Church told to this website’s newspaper that Kanjirappally Bishop Mathew Arackal and Idukki Bishop Mathew Anikuzhikattil have landed in New Delhi.
They have sought an appointment with Sonia also. But, it was not clear whether they could meet her.An MP from Central Kerala, who is close to the Catholic Church, took the initiative for arranging the meeting between Sonia and bishops.

It is learnt that the Syro-Malabar Church has decided to take up the cause of the arrested priests and nun in the Abhaya case and ensure that they get justice during trial. The bishops are expected to convey their anxieties to Sonia Gandhi and demand that a fair trial should be ensured in the case.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
"Syro-Malabar Church has decided to take up the cause of the arrested priests and nun in the Abhaya case and ensure that they get justice during trial".
What 'justice' do these christoterrorists have in mind? Getting the murderers released in order to save christoterrorism's facade? Christotyrant Sonia will do her best, I'm sure.
<span style='color:red'>Abhaya was hacked to death with axe: CBI</span>
2 Dec 2008, 1621 hrs IST, IANS

KOCHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is investigating the 1992 murder of Sister Abhaya, told a court on Tuesday that she was hacked to death with an axe by the two priests and a nun arrested in the case, 16 years after her death.

On Nov 19, the 13th team of the CBI set up to probe the case - after 12 earlier teams failed - arrested Father Jose Putarika, 56, a former Malayalam professor at a Kottayam college where Abhaya studied; Father Thomas Kottor, 61, the Diocesan chancellor of the Catholic Church at Kottayam; and Sister Seffi, who was a resident of the convent when the incident took place.

Counsel for the CBI Anil Kumar told the chief judicial magistrate court that the three accused hit Abhaya using an axe after she saw something that may have been unbefitting of them.

Abhaya, a resident of Pious X Hostel, was found dead in the well of the Kottayam convent March 27, 1992.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Shock gives way to rising nationalism and anger in India
India (MNN) ― Nationalist anger is beginning to surface in India in the wake of Muslim militant attacks at the heart of the financial district last week.

Protesters are accusing neighboring Pakistan of being behind the Mumbai attacks that killed at least195 people.

The fallout didn't stop there. As reports revealed intelligence failures on the part of India's government, along with the neglect of preventing the attacks, India's interior minister resigned Sunday.

Grand Rapids, Michigan-based MissionIndia had a training conference for their top leadership in Mumbai about a mile from the initial assault site. The church leaders weren't directly harmed, but they were trapped for a time when  parts of the city shut down.

Though not directly impacted by the crisis, Dave Stravers, of Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Mission India is more concerned about the long-term impact of the terrorist strike. Government mistakes are "giving a lot of political ammunition to the BJP."

Hindu extremists have been found among members of the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP--the opposition party contesting the Congress Party in the coming elections. BJP officials are taking advantage of the outrage against the Muslim extremists and campaigning for a tougher anti-terror law in response to the bombings.

However, the BJP has also been blamed for instigating Hindu extremists in their attacks on believers in Orissa. Stravers notes, "This party is anti-Muslim and anti-Christian, and it could give them enough impetus to  actually get control of the government of India as they did about tenyears ago, and this would be very bad news for Christians."

The message to believers is: STOP. According to one of member of the Mission India staff, the extremists are calling for a repeat to last Christmas Eve's attacks on Christians. Police and government leaders have done little to quell the violence or to stop the  violence from continuing.

However, the Gospel is stillgoing out. Stravers says their church planters are still active. "We're praying for Christians to be strong in their witness. The church is growing fast. This is the good news. Nevertheless, believers will perhaps be suffering in the meantime."

Hindu-Christian wedlock invalid under Hindu Marriage Act: Supreme Court
www.zeenews.com

New Delhi, Dec 06: Marriage between a Hindu and a Christian is invalid under the Hindu Marriage Act, as the Act provides for only Hindu couples to enter into wedlock, the Supreme Court ruled on Saturday.

A Bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and Aftab Alam upheld the judgment of the Andhra Pradesh High Court which nullified a marriage, after the wife, <b>Bandaru Pavani, a Hindu, claimed that her husband, Gullipilli Sowria Raj a Christian, had misled her by pretending to be a Hindu and married her at a temple.</b>

The husband had misinformed about his social status, the wife had complained while seeking divorce

According to the couple, Raj, a Roman Catholic Christian married Pavani on October 24, 1996, in a temple by way of exchanging of 'Thali' (sacred thread) in the absence of any representative from either side.

Subsequently, the marriage was registered on November 2, 1996 under Section 8 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.

The matrimonial court rejected her plea for divorce saying the marriage was valid under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, even if one of the parties belonged to any other faith.

However, the High Court upheld her plea and said the marriage was void as the Act postulated marriage only between Hindus, following which the husband filed the SLP in the apex court.

Dismissing the Christian husband's appeal, the apex court said Section 5 of the Act makes it clear that a marriage may be solemnised between any two Hindus if the conditions contained in the said Section were fulfilled.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Knanaya church trying to destroy evidences: CBI
VR Jayaraj | Kochi - Daily Pioneer.com

The CBI on Wednesday charged the Knanaya Catholic Church in the State with organised efforts to destroy evidences and derail the probe in the case pertaining to the murder of Sr Abhaya, a nun of the Church, in 1992. The investigating agency told the Kerala High Court that there was a concerted effort on the part of the Knanaya Church to publicise that the CBI was needlessly persecuting its two priests and a nun, arrested as the first three accused in the case.

In response to the CBI's submissions, the High Court observed that the situation was so serious that the investigators might need special protection. Justice K Hema of the High Court rejected several arguments of the accused.

The Knanaya Church had been organising continuous programmes like prayer meets and fasts saying that the accused priests and nun were innocent. It had also been brining up petitions continuously in the court charging the CBI with various crimes, which according to the agency were efforts to create a sentiment amongst the public against the agency.

As the court considered the bail applications of the accused, the CBI opposed them saying the accused were influential church personalities who could manipulate the investigation through several means if they were released. The CBI, on the instruction of the court, presented all vital evidences to the court to support its arguments.

The investigating agency had arrested Fr Thomas M Kottoor, the Church's chancellor at the Kottayam Archdiocese, Fr Jose Puthrukayil, Principal of a college run by the Church, and Sr Seffi, a senior nun at the St Pius X Convent, Kottayam where Sr Abhaya was murdered in the early morning of March 27, 1992, as first, second and third accused respectively. All the three were in CBI custody from the day of their arrest, November 19, to December 2 and afterwards they were remanded in judicial custody till December 16.

The CBI's finding is that the accused had struck Sr Abhaya in the head twice with the back of an axe with the intention to kill her, fearing that she might reveal the immoral act of the priests with the nuns in the convent. After she went limp, the two priests threw her in the well of the convent, the CBI says. Sr Seffi, with whom the priests had illicit relationship, had helped them in throwing Sr Abhaya in the well, the agency alleged.

The CBI told the court on Wednesday an eye-witness, guard Chellappadas of the church near the convent, had deposed that he had seen Fr Puthrukayil jumping over the convent's compound wall in the back and running away. Three priests, including Fr Jossy Michael, had told the CBI that Sr Abhaya had seen the two priests engaged in immoral act with the nun, and this was the reason for the murder.

Two other witnesses, Raju alias Adakka Raju, a common thief, and Sanju P Mathew, residing in the house near the convent, confirmed that the two priests were in the convent on the night of the incident. Raju said he had seen the two priests in the convent on the night of the incident, when he had entered the convent on his nightly job. Sanju P Mathew had seen Fr Kottoor's two-wheeler in front of the convent at the unearthly hours.

The CBI told the court that VV Augustine, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, who prepared the inquest on the body of Sr Abhaya, had told the agency the day before his death that he had destroyed and manipulated evidences due to pressure from his superiors. Augustine, who was found dead at his house plot on November 25, had told the CBI that he had deliberately avoided mentioning the injury marks on Sr Abhaya's body and other circumstantial evidences due to this pressure. The CBI now knew who these superiors were.

Eye-witnesses had told the CBI that the two priests had been regular visitors to the convent and that they had seen their car and two-wheeler in front of the convent on several nights. The CBI also told the court that the very fact that Sr Seffi had undergone hymen restoration surgery when the case was progressing was a strong suggestion of her involvement.

Apart from all this, the accused had admitted to their crime during the narco-analysis and had confirmed later that what they revealed during that test were correct. When the accused requested to the court to disregard the result of the narco-analysis, the court responded by saying that such evidences could not be disregarded.

The court, which took up the bail applications on Wednesday morning, had posted them for consideration on Thursday on the ground that the CBI should submit all direct and indirect evidences for its argument not to grant bail to the accused. But the CBI insisted that the case be taken up on Wednesday itself, and in no time the agency produced all he evidences. The court said the case would continue to be examined as there were several documents to be looked into.

The CBI produced the case diary which ran into 21 volumes and the three compact discs containing the details of the narco-analysis on the three accused.

The following is my ((Sandeep's)) translation of Dr. S.L Bhyrappa’s article that appeared in Vijaya Karnataka on 16 October 2008.

It provides an all-encompassing perspective on the proselytization menace threatening India and is justifiably lengthy.

Read and weep. Better still, do something.

This Happens Only in India

Christian Missionary activity in India has a history of about four hundred years. Neither is it fresh news that after Sonia Gandhi’s coronation, there has been a near-explosion of conversions across India?a fact, which is well-known simply because our media houses have carefully banished it. There is almost a self-imposed gag that prevents the media from even raising conversions as a serious social issue. However, what becomes front-page news is the reaction/opposition to missionary activity. Case in point: the recent efforts to counter missionary propaganda and mischief in Orissa and Karnataka. The secular media, intellectuals, Leftists, and fellow-travellers were quick to bawl from the rooftops that this was the end of India. Neither is their bawling new: the average newspaper-reader is no longer fooled by such displays of selective sympathy, which in reality is secular support to missionary activity. But it doesn’t end there. With each passing day, Sonia Gandhi’s pets, intellectuals, and secularists have increased the decibel levels to a feverish pitch to achieve a twofold goal: to undermine BJP-ruled states and Hindu organizations, and help Christian organizations worldwide to blacken India’s face at the United Nations. The Congress government at the Centre under Sonia Gandhi is also on an overdrive, trying to exploit the situation to hilt by finding ways to dismiss the state governments in Orissa and Karnataka. What has stopped them from actually dismissing the state governments is the fact of a possible voter backlash in the elections following the dismissal.
The ruling party at the centre, Left comrades, and the English media were quick to blame Bajrang Dal for the violent reaction that resulted from Missionary mischief. However, some uncomfortable questions persist. What was the actual role of Bajrang Dal in the violence? What was the role of the people who inflicted violence in the name of Bajrang Dal? What was the role of those who, goaded by Missionary propaganda, carried out the violence of their own accord? These questions are ignored precisely because they are uncomfortable.
Francois Gautier, a French journalist living in India for many years expresses alarm in an article describing the Christianization of India under Sonia Gandhi.

I am a westerner and a born Christian. I was mainly brought up in catholic schools, my uncle, Father Guy Gautier, a gem of a man, was the parish head of the beautiful Saint Jean de Montmartre church in Paris ; my father, Jacques Gautier, a famous artist in France, and a truly good person if there ever was one, was a fervent catholic all his life, went to church nearly every day and lived by his Christian values…Yet, I am a little uneasy when I see how much Christianity is taking over India under the reign of Sonia Gandhi : according to a 2001 census, there are about 2.34 million Christians in India ; not even 2,5% of the nation, a negligible amount. Yet there are today five Christian chief ministers in Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

One should add that the majority of politicians in Sonia Gandhi’s closed circle are either Christians or Muslims. She seems to have no confidence in Hindus.Ambika Soni, a Christian, is General Secretary of the Congress and a very powerful person, with close access to Sonia Gandhi. Oscar Fernandes is Union Programme Implementation Minister. Margaret Alwa is the eminence grise of Maharasthra. Karnataka is virtually controlled by AK Anthony, whose secretaries are all from the Southern Christian association. Valson Thampu, a Hindu hater, is Chairman NCERT curriculum Review Committee, John Dayal, another known Hindu baiter, has been named by Sonia Gandhi in the National Integration Council ; and Kancha Ilaya, who hates Hindus, is being allowed by the Indian Government to lobby with the UN and US Congress so that caste discrimination in India is taken-up by these bodies.

I have nothing personally against Sonia Gandhi…since she is at the top, Christian conversions in India seem to have gone on an overdrive. More than 4,000 foreign Christian missionaries are involved in conversion activities across different states. In Tripura, there were no Christians at independence; there are 120.000 today, a 90% increase since 1991. The figures are even more striking in Arunachal Pradesh, where there were only 1710 Christians in 1961, but 1,2 million today, as well as 780 churches! In Andhra Pradesh, churches are coming-up every day in far flung villages and there was even an attempt to set-up one near Tirupati. Many of the North-East separatist movements, such as the Mizo or the Bodos, are not only Christian dominated, but also sometimes function with the covert backing of the missionaries…More than 20,000 people have lost their lives to insurgency in Assam and Manipur in the past two decades…this is an India where you see today Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati of Dwarka Peeth, made to disembark from an Indian Airlines flight for carrying his holy dand, a thin bamboo stick which is a symbol of their spiritual designation, inside the aircraft cabin…Indians like to say that the greatness of India is that it accepts a foreigner and a Christian like Sonia Gandhi. But isn’t it rather a weakness, and an aberration? Can’t we find a worthy leader amongst one billion Indians?
I have merely excerpted a few lines from Gautier’s article available online at http://www.francoisgautier.com/Written%20M.../Sonia-occ.html (Francois Gautier can be contacted at 09343538419/09442123255).
When the late Pope John Paul II visited India in 1999, the English media was ecstatic and tried to infect its ecstasy throughout the country. The Indian President and Prime Minister together with its retinue of ministers welcomed him as it would welcome the head of a state. But Hindu groups protested the state honours done to the Pope because his real mission was to convert Indians. The media, secularists, and self-proclaimed “progressives” raised an unbearable cacophony, colouring the protests as another instance of the dreadful threat of Hindu fundamentalism. But what did the Pope do? He declared with impunity that, “just as in the first millennium, the Cross was planted on the soil of Europe, and in the second on that of the Americas and Africa, we can pray that in the third Christian millennium a great harvest of faith will be reaped in this vast and vital continent.” The Pope shot’s was direct and open: reap a harvest of souls in India. The progressive drum-beaters and their cohorts in the media who had shown such courage in denouncing “Hindu fundamentalism” responded with strategic silence.

The United States contributes $145 billion for conversion efforts across the globe. Churches worldwide earmark about $1.1 billion to fund missionary-specific research. This kind of research is carried out in 300 languages and covers about 180 topics. Books and other missionary literature are published in 500 languages. These add up to 175000 in total. An average of $3300 is required to convert one person. However, this doesn’t mean that the person wishing to convert actually receives $3300. The sum covers the conversion infrastructure: planning, administrative activities, and implementation. In 1500 CE, the missionaries numbered about 30 million worldwide. Today the number stands at 640 million. 54% of this number is non-Whites. The conclusion is inescapable: the intent is to train and provide an entire support system to non-Whites to garner more souls into the Christian fold. This technique is very similar to what the British did in India. They recruited Indians into the army by training them, paying them well, and providing superior living standards. This system ensured that the British Empire was supported on the ground by the natives themselves.

An average Indian is still perplexed by the actual goal that conversions achieve. This explains why the conversion debate is so poorly formulated in the Indian public discourse. Indians regard spirituality in terms of severe austerities, of penance and inward contemplation practiced in silence and solitude on the freezing heights of the Himalayas or in threadbare hermitages in forests or in caves. The stress is on realizing inner light, on realizing one’s own Self. The spiritual aspirant has absolutely no moral right to preach spiritual realization to the world until he achieves self-realization. But what does a self-realized person really preach? The same as what he set out to realize. Since his realization is his own experience, the preaching itself therefore consists of the methods, and approaches of attaining self-realization. This however, is neither the way nor the essence of Christianity.

It is essential to understand the nature of Semitic (Prophetic or Abrahamic) religions to understand the fundamental tenets of Christianity. Every Prophetic religion is by definition established by a Prophet. Judaism, established by the patriarch Abraham, is the foundational Prophetic religion. Christianity, a variant of Judaism is believed to be founded by Jesus. Islam, which incorporates several features of Judaism, was founded by Mohammad. Prophetic religions share several similar fundamental Principles upon which the entire edifice of the religion exists. The chief among these is that man has no direct access to God. If you remove just this one principle, the whole religion falls apart instantly. Direct access to God is denied to man because man is a sinner by birth and continues to sin as long as he lives. Now, this God is frighteningly macabre and delivers the cruelest punishment without hesitation, decrees the Prophet. Man should unquestioningly believe the Prophet and follow his teachings to save himself from falling into a ghastly Hell after death. Non-belief means eternal suffering in Hell. It is thus mandatory to believe in the Prophet. Not just that. By extension, Prophetic logic implies that the entire mankind is sinful. Therefore, it is mandatory for all existing believers to convince existing non-believers: by force if necessary. Prophet Mohammad decreed wanton murder, torture, humiliation, and slavery as legitimate methods of dealing with non-believers. Some of these methods have become an inextricable part of the Koran. No Prophet can tolerate Gods of other religions, an aspect I have dealt with in detail in my novel, Aavarana.

No Satisfactory Answers

Jesus was a Prophet in the mold of Abraham. However, it is believed that unlike Abraham, he preached love and forbearance. In reality, recent researches question the very existence of Jesus as a real, historical person. If he really did exist, is he the same Jesus that we find in the New Testament? With the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, suspicion veers in favour of the latter. Christianity as we know it today was given its shape by Saint Paul, founder of the Church. Scholarly opinion apart, there’s no difference between the Koran and the Bible on this principle: you will be cast to eternal hell if you don’t believe in the Book.

Early in its history, Christians began a systematic campaign of wanton massacre and conversion of Jews on the mistaken belief that Jews nailed Jesus to the Cross. Those Jews who refused to convert were brutally tortured, which is perhaps why Jews did not attempt to convert people of other religions. The seeds of Anti-Semitism sown then continue unabated to this day. It reached its gory climax at the hands of Hitler, who killed about six million Jews in his gas chambers. Pope Pius XII is also known as “Hitler’s Pope” for his wanton blindness to the genocide of Jews under Hitler. John Cornwell, in his book bearing the same title documents (using material from the Vatican’s archives) how the Pope’s deep rooted anti-Semitism led him to collaborate with Hitler in the Jewish massacre. The Vatican is yet to come up with a satisfactory refutation of this charge.
The Inquisition of Goa that lasted from 1560 through 1817 provides us the dark details of the horrors of yet another chapter in the history of Christianity-inspired violence. The Inquisition signifies the series of unbelievably barbaric atrocities that were committed on Hindus who refused to convert to Christianity when the Portuguese took over Goa. Inquisition “laws” numbered about 230 pages. Stalin modeled his interrogation methods after the precedent of Christian Inquisition laws. In Goa, Inquisitions were carried out behind closed doors and windows in a place known as Doddamane. A sample of how this worked. People who refused to accept the only true faith were believed to be under Satan’s influence. Inhuman torture was the preferred method of extracting confessions from unbelievers. The screams of the victims emanating in the silence of the night were heard throughout the entire locality. Victims were mercilessly flogged in the presence of their family, their body parts were severed and mutilated, their eyelids were torn out, and their fingers and toes were cut piece by piece.

The Church priest Diego de Bordeaux, together with Vicar Miguel Vazz devised a 41-point programme for torturing Hindus. Accordingly, the Goan Viceroy, Antao de Noronha published the following decree in 1566 applicable to the entire region under Portuguese occupation.
I hereby order that in any area owned by my master, the king, nobody should construct a Hindu temple and such temples already constructed should not be repaired without my permission. If this order is transgressed, such temples shall be, destroyed and the goods in them shall be used to meet expenses of holy deeds, as punishment of such transgression.

Other ingenious specimens follow.

No instrumental music should be played in Hindu weddings
Paan is prohibited at Hindu weddings
Exchange of fruits, flowers, and betel nut is prohibited between the families of the bride and the groom
Family deities should not be worshipped
Arranging pandals is prohibited
Threshing husk (rice) and making sambar powder on the eve of wedding preparation is prohibited
Post-death ceremonies like the 13th day (Vaikuntham) celebration is prohibited
Ekadashi fasting is prohibited
Hindu men are forbidden from wearing dhotis
Hindu women are forbidden from wearing blouses
Growing the Tulasi plant around the house-either in the front or backyard is prohibited
According to a decree dated Sep 22, 1570, Hindus who had converted to Christianity were exempt from all taxes for a period of 15 years. However, none of these Hindus were allowed to use their original Hindu names or even their surnames.

Space constraints prevent me from mentioning further details of the Goa Inquisition. The Goa Inquisition, by A.K. Priolkar (Voice of India, New Delhi) provides an exhaustive account of this blood-dripping historical episode. Pages 79-84 contain the comprehensive list of Hindu temples (as also the cities/towns they were located in) destroyed by Portuguese missionaries. Priolkar’s book also carries a bibliography of the contemporary accounts left behind by the Portuguese. Missionaries and Muslim invaders who came before them thus shared the same zealotry in destroying Hindu temples and the licentious massacre of Hindu population. Thanks to the brutal Inquisition, thousands of Hindus fled to neighbouring states like Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra to retain their Hinduness and identified themselves as Konkani Hindus. To this day, the Gauda Saraswata and Sarawata Brahmin castes trace their ancestry to Goa.

In the chapter entitled, Portuguese Religious Policy, the noted historian K.M. Panikkar records in his book, Malabar and the Portuguese, that Hindu kings treated Syrian Christians with respect and did not interfere in their religious beliefs. Accounts of contemporary Portuguese travellers affirm this fact. However, Syrian Christians, at the first available opportunity, kicked at the king’s authority and recognized the overlordship of the king of Portugal. They voluntarily gave up their ancestral religious symbols, icons, and documents to Vasco Da Gama. Additionally, they requested him to take over the existing Hindu kingdom and offered to help him accomplish the conquest. They suggested that Vasco Da Gama build a fort in Granganore. This is the nature of the gratitude Syrian Christians showed to the king who let them practice their religion in peace and treated them without discrimination. When Christianity finally gained political supremacy, the Portuguese viceroy received a diktat to convert the Raja of Cochin!

Renaissance, Enlightenment, and later, colonialism were the greatest causes to put a rude end to the Church’s use of violence in converting people of other religions. Trade and political expansion opened the eyes of the upper classes of the Christian West to religions in other lands, to religions other than Christianity. The rise of Protestantism is in reality, a violent political reaction to a corrupt Catholicism and a debauched Papacy. However, the Church’s effective decline became irreversible around the time of Enlightenment. Scientific spirit and reason became the bases for philosophical enquiry against the “enquiry” of the Church, which was primarily rooted in dogma. Advances in physics, biology, and sociology exponentially multiplied the number of people who quickly rejected the Church. All it took to reduce Christianity to abject powerlessness was the application of reason to scrutinize its fundamental tenets. An alarmed Church adopted a new disguise: it projected the advances in science as something already present in Christianity! It gave it a new fancy name: Christian Science. According to this new science, science was separate, and faith was separate. It propounded that we should not use scientific methods to examine faith. The implication is obvious: the Church wanted to put a stop to critical examination of the fundamental principles of Christianity.

The British who established their empire in India had earlier set up the Church of England, breaking away from the clutches of the Vatican. They did not wish to risk antagonizing Hinduism in India. Therefore, they propagated the pretence of keeping the missionaries and the Empire separate, at least in the eyes of Indians. Ultimately, the aim of both the missionaries and the empire was the same: to destroy the spirit of India. India’s spirit posed a very different challenge unlike any other nation that the British had colonized. Macaulay’s education policy, the Aryan Invasion Theory, the Eurocentric (mis)interpretation of Indian history and caste, applying pseudo-sociology to the Indian society, census, and a systematic splintering of the Hindu society into Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, the Aryan-Dravidian artificial divide, and the continual fanning of Hindu-Muslim passions was the singular contribution of the British to the Indian education system. They injected this cultural poison in books and our institutions and created a whole new generation of rootless people who became aliens in their own land. The chaotic state of India today is the living mark of their outstanding success in this ignoble endeavour. This was exactly the grand shot missionaries needed to further their ambition of Christianizing India. On its part, the British masters sanctioned land (also ordered the local/provincial Rajas) for building schools, colleges and hospitals, mere guises to really execute missionary activities. Missionaries were also projected as the carriers of allopathic medicine and nearly wiped out the medical system of ancient India. Additionally, converted Indians were given pay raises and promotions on a preferential basis in government services thus creating a self-perpetuating incentive structure that ensured that Indian Christians placed their loyalties elsewhere than their own motherland. These converts quickly announced their cultural alienation by ostentatiously adopting the manners, menu, attire, and customs of their imperial masters. As a result of such overt display, “native” Indians naturally were overwhelmed with awe at the institutions the British built. However, what should not escape our notice is the fact that the British built their hospitals as places to train Christians in various specialty medicines. The following example is a good parallel to show how the British masters went about procuring what they wanted. A common refrain even today is the praises sung in glory of the adventurous spirit of the British. I can recall one such instance from my childhood. The British penetrated the densest jungle, cut it down, tamed it, and built sprawling coffee estates, something Indians had no guts for. Many years later, a retired revenue assessor revealed how the system worked. Typically, the British Resident at Bangalore would send a request to the provincial Raja to sanction the procurement of land for a coffee estate at a specific location. While it was worded like a request, it was a masked order in reality. The order would travel through the office of the District Collector right down to the Taluk Amaldar. The Amaldar would then send a revenue inspector. The British beneficiary and the revenue inspector would reach the top of a hill from where the British would draw a circle in the air indicating the extent of land he wanted. Necessary orders would be passed to this effect. Local labourers would then begin to cut down the vegetation typically spread over thousands of acres. The British beneficiary would then sell the valuable trees like teak and rosewood that were cut and use the proceeds to build his coffee estate. The Imperial Bank would lend money at 1% interest, which the estate owner would repay after the crop was harvested. These coffee estates and the English-style bungalows at the top of these hills survive in many parts of India today. The Planter’s Association in Sakaleshpur had a signboard that prohibited entry to natives and dogs.

There is a fundamental difference between Hinduism and the desert-born Abrahamic religions. The Prophet of each of these religions has a monopoly over truth and exclusive access to God’s message. His followers need to therefore submit themselves to him failing which eternal suffering in Hell is assured. To fully secure their allegiance, the Prophet commands his followers to go to the world and convert people of other faiths by force if necessary. This command is in the nature of sacred duty. It is clear that Prophetic religions are basically blinkered ideologies. The Vedas, India’s earliest lyrical expression of philosophical quest hold that That is the One Truth, which the Wise men state in different forms and methods and words (Ekam Sat Vipraah Bahudaa Vadanti). We can find no other better expression of freedom in intellectual, spiritual, and philosophical inquiry. This same precept is echoed in almost all Indian schools of philosophy. SyAdvAda (SyAt=maybe, possibility, suggestion of alternatives) is one of the most important tenets of Jainism. This tenet expostulates that an aspirant should not insist that his perception is the only truth. He should accept the existence of an alternate perception, even an opposing perception. Equally, he should accept that both the alternate and the opposing perception can coexist. Jainism lists seven such possibilities. This is but another expression of Ekam Sat Vipraah… Equally, all Indian schools of philosophy placed a high value on logic and philosophical (and scholarly) debate. This is yet another important reason why Prophetism never occurred to Indian consciousness. The Rishis of the Vedas and Upanishads were not prophets. In the last chapter of his scholarly The Psychology of Prophetism, the Belgian scholar Koenraad Elst says that prophets “talk about themselves a lot. They think they are very special, this one person in this one body is different from the rest and has an exclusive relationship with the Creator. But the rishis talked about a universal way, a world order in which we all participate, a state of consciousness we can all achieve. If God is defined as that which transcends all worldly differences, the One above the Many, then this universalism is far more divine than the prophets’ exclusivism…. the essence of Hindu Dharma is not tolerance, or equal respect for all religions but Satya, truth. The problem with Christianity and Islam is superficially their intolerance and fanaticism. But this intolerance is a consequence of these religions’ untruthfulness: if your belief system is based on delusions, you have to pre-empt rational inquiry into it and shield it from contact with more sustainable thought systems. The fundamental problem with the monotheist religions is not that they are intolerant, but that they are untrue, (Asatya or Anrita).” Elst’s book is a must-read for anyone with a serious interest in the subject. Similarly, Buddha was not a prophet-he was another rishi living in the Upanishadic age. Buddha’s teachings are entirely consistent with and in many ways complementary to their Upanishadic counterparts. R.D. Ranade’s A Constructive Survey of the Upanishadic Philosophy (4th edition, 2nd part) accurately observes that all Indian philosophical schools use the word Dharma to describe themselves, not the word religion, used by Prophetic creeds.

How not to Interpret Spirituality

When the initial waves of barbaric Islamic invasions took India by stunned surprise, spiritual leaders of different philosophical schools were unable to fathom the true nature of those invasions. Coming from the Ekam Sat Vipraah… tradition, they explained the brutal savagery of the invaders as the behaviour of spiritually unevolved people. It did not occur to them to examine the nature of the invaders’ religion. As a relatively recent example, Chandrashekhara Bharati, the Swami (pontiff) of Sringeri Shankara Mutt was once approached by a European with a request to initiate him into Hinduism. The pontiff responded by asking him to first be a good Christian, which automatically meant he would become a good Hindu. Several people uphold this incident as an example of the inclusivity of Hindusim. It is both naïve and stupid because a true Christian is duty-bound to convert as many heathens as possible. That Chandrashekara Bharati was clearly ignorant of this tenet is amply evident. Other questions arise. Was the Swami so deeply steeped in Ekam Sat… that he leaves us no option other than calling his reaction intellectual sloth? Or was he still unable to break the prohibition of initiating people of other faiths into Hinduism? And this incident occurred in the previous century. During Islam’s destructive trail of conquest, during the Portuguese Inquisition in Goa and rampage in the Malabar, as also the surreptitious missionary activity under the British, no Hindu spiritual leader even attempted to critically scrutinize Prophetic creeds. Vidyaranya, the founder and spiritual force behind the Vijaynagar Empire, had accurately assessed the problem facing Hindu society. However, I have not come across any critical study of Islam that he had undertaken. In the purview of my studies, only Maharshi Dayananda Saraswati and Swami Vivekananda seem to have examined Prophetic creeds from both spiritual and critical standpoints.

The same inaccurate perceptions about Prophetic creeds exist among Hindu spiritual leaders and educated laymen alike as we speak. A Jihadi who risks his life to execute terror attacks and missionaries who reach remote and inaccessible villages and dense forest regions and dangerous mountain territory are propelled by the same brainwashed motivation: convert people to the only true religion.
A good yardstick to scrutinize any religion is the emphasis it places on social service. This is healthy from both an economic as well as an ethical perspective. In Western nations, the state gradually assumed all-round responsibility for its citizens: education, jobs, unemployment benefits, sanitation, healthcare, pension funds, and old age care. This was based on the goal of a welfare state. Most prosperous nations today have institutionalized these responsibilities remarkably well. As a result, several of these functions, which earlier belonged to the religious domain, were irreversibly and unrecognizably detached from religion. A few decades ago (even today to an extent), Christians were glowingly praised for their record of establishing schools, colleges, hospitals and old-age homes. Hinduism was derided in the same strain for not doing those very things. Subsequently, Hindu religious institutions (mutts and temples) followed the same path of social service. However, from a purely philosophical standpoint, are these the real aims of Hindu religious institutions? The fact that centers of philosophy have felt compelled to engage themselves in social service is a cruel (but precise) commentary on the all-round, systematic failure of a corrupt and morally-depraved polity. To that extent, we owe a mountain of gratitude to these institutions. However, that is not their core area of activity. To understand this, we need to discern the primary purpose or function of these institutions. To what extent are these institutions today capable of being the founts of spirituality? To what degree are these institutions competent to fulfill that unstated longing that transcends food, riches, employment, money, and education, learning and opulence? While spirituality illuminates our ethics, it is both erroneous and misleading to measure spirituality using moral standards. In 1975, I represented India at a month-long seminar on teaching ethics under the aegis of UNESCO at Tokyo. As part of the seminar, I had to interview educationists in schools across Japan to learn how moral education was imparted there. One of my visits included a Christian-run school. In the course of the interview, I asked the principal of the school whether his school taught moral education differently or better than other schools.
“Very good question,” he said, “we are special.”
“How?” I quizzed.
“About 30 students who passed out of this school converted to Christianity after they reached adulthood.”

Who has the courage?

In that principal’s world, morality consisted of converting to Christianity. A non-Christian cannot be moral. A famous anecdote revolves around a comment made by a Muslim about Mahatma Gandhi. “Gandhi maybe a Mahatma but he is definitely inferior to the most condemnable Muslim.” Subtle explanations fail to penetrate such a mindset. As also the fact that ethics and morality are independent of religion, and force, cruelty, allurement and coercion are not acceptable methods to spread religion.

In this context, it is pertinent to raise some questions about Mother Theresa, who was posthumously beatified by the Vatican and when alive, wallowed in the halo of gigantic international publicity. Did she allow the orphans in her hermitage to practice their own faith? After her death, I visited her Missionaries of Charity to find that every orphan was converted, another instance of Missionary designs to convert. The combined might of the Vatican and international media ensured that she always stayed in the limelight. On their part, the Indian media, a mere echo of the Western media did their bit to perpetuate the Mother Theresa myth. Christopher Hitchens’ The Missionary Position successfully busts this myth. He unearths convincing evidence to show how her words and deeds were completely inconsistent. He documents her friendship with dictators (Duvalier), and fraudsters (Charles Keating) and also shows how she lacked any sense of ethics when she refused to return the money she had taken from Keating. Keating had stolen this from thousands of poor and middle class Americans by promising them attractive rates of interest. According to Christian doctrine, an aspirant of Sainthood should have performed a few miracles in his/her lifetime. As a matter of suspicious coincidence, the Nuns of Theresa’s order suddenly began to narrate the miracles they had witnessed around Theresa. This passes off unnoticed by our daring intellectuals. But Sai Baba is not that lucky.

Let me narrate something from my childhood, around 60 years ago. A huge drum was placed on a bull. Beating this drum was the signal to the villagers to put together whatever they could afford to give in charity. The current pontiff of the Siddaganga Mutt, Shivakumara Swami, was in his forties back then. He would visit the village in person in a bullock cart. On their part, the villagers used to fill huge sacks with chillies, ragi, and pulses and send these sacks on a 40-mile journey to Siddaganga at their own cost. This was true of every village in the surrounding. The Swami never asked. His work motivated people to volunteer thus. His only appeal: “I don’t care how many poor children are in your village. Send them all to my Mutt. I will take care of their every need. Their education is my only concern.” Today, Siddaganga Mutt has around 8000 children under its umbrella. Ever since he became a sanyasin, he toured villages by foot and gradually built the institution to its current size. He makes no caste or communal distinction. I have seen Muslim children in his institution. Despite all this, he has not converted a single child to Veerashaivism. His approach stands on religious openness and character-building. Yet, what’s the publicity he has received? A few paragraphs in local, Kannada newspapers when he turned 100 only because he turned 100. Contrast the publicity Mother Theresa garnered in her lifetime. This is not to express discontent or envy. One of the five strictures of a Yogi is that any good work needs to become an offering to God. The moment he ascribes his name to it, he descends to the level of a puffed-up egotist and stops progress in Yoga. Malladihalli Raghavendra Swami, Baba Amte and Dr.Sudarshan at B.R.Hills are but a few prominent names of several such selfless people serving society in a spirit of worldly detachment. Yet their names are not heard beyond their surrounding villages unlike Mother Theresa. That’s because their work doesn’t involve spreading the “love” and miracles of Christ.

Who will bell the Cat?

If brainwashed missionaries roam remote villages, busy hunting for conversion-prey, a gigantic, international support system constantly backs them-from training, funding, guidance, assistance, media management, making the right noises in public-all the way up to exerting political pressure when crisis breaks out. Hindus have historically and continually become habituated to losing. This sorry state of affairs continues unabated despite having a law that regulates conversions. Courts have also expounded on this law but the exposition serves only to amplify the cruel mockery simply because nobody has the courage to enforce it. If Hindus report missionaries using unlawful conversion methods, media cacophony ensures that the complainants are themselves portrayed as the villains! The miserable and recurring consequence is that the police refuse to act. The collective power of the media, politicians, Christian organizations, and intellectuals demonize Hindus in a shrill din of abuse. The terms of abuse vary-communal, fundamentalist, fascist, and bigoted-but the pattern is sickeningly familiar as is the result: Hindus are arrested for speaking or acting against unlawful activities. Neither is this new. We can trace its genesis to the culture of the Congress party under Nehru, who initiated institutionalized Hindu-victimization. Despite being Gandhi’s chosen pet, Nehru embodied the very antithesis of everything Gandhi stood for. Indeed, as India neared Independence, Gandhi quickly lost relevance. This culture of Congress is being dangerously embellished in the able hands of a Christian lady who swears her allegiance to the Vatican. In addition, the carefully-cultivated culture of dynastic slavery ensures that no career-minded Congress politician can progress without genuflecting at her feet. When political career is defined as the single-minded pursuit of unscrupulous accumulation of wealth and power, no Congressman will dare to dream of talking about conversions in any but fawning tones. Non-Congress secular drum-beaters like Deve Gowda, Mualayam Singh Yadav, and Lalu Prasad Yadav have perpetually had their eyes on the minority vote bank and are therefore viciously anti-BJP. And then we have the Communists masquerading as secularists par excellence on the other end of the political spectrum. Hindu-bashing is one of the foundation stones of Indian Communist “theory.” The academia and the self-proclaimed intellectual elite pitch in with their bit to complete the picture. This class derives its ideas from the mould of Macaulay. One discernible commonality of secularist politicians involves using Orwellian doublespeak. A typical secularist politician conducts elaborate Vedic rituals at tremendous personal expenditure, visits every other temple, and offers massive sums of charity to Brahmin priests. The very evening, he visits a Mosque, and in public speeches, proclaims that he wants to be born a Muslim in his next birth! The reason is not difficult to discern: in a democracy of appeasement, pandering to the lowest common denominator is a mandatory survival tactic as well as a garb to hide insecurity. And thus he is compelled to oppose those who oppose fraudulent conversions. Fasting till noon under the shade of Gandhi’s statue is a workable method of expressing opposition. Neither is he alone in this. The Dalit intellectual class shows another interesting facet. This class opposes any measure to pass legislature to ban conversions for a more insidious reason. If such a legislature ever comes to force, this class permanently loses its powerful, time-honoured artillery of blackmail: threatening to convert to Islam or Christianity en masse. Their duplicity is further evident when we notice their behaviour vis a vis reservations to Dalit Christians (the term in itself an oxymoron). They fiercely oppose reservations to Dalit Christians because they’re unwilling to share the cake with more people. Samuel Rajashekar Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh extended reservations for Muslims in his state with the long term view of extending a similar largesse to Christians. His message is transparent: convert and thou shall obtain reservations. In their Buddhism-conversion drives, they visit every Dalit house and ensure that Hindu Gods-Maramma, Annamma, etc-are comprehensively discarded. However, in government forms and records, they state “Dalit” in the “Caste” column. To the Hindu institutions and mutts that oppose such neo-Buddhists, their stern reply, nay warning, is ready: mind your own business.

Assigning Moral Responsibility

To add more fuel to this stifling, chaotic, and violent atmosphere, the media abuses ordinary Hindus and other direct victims of conversion when they raise genuine concerns. The media and public institutions in powerful Christian nations pick up this thread of abuse, bolster it, and raise hell internationally. A recent New York Times article on the Orissa violence is a study in manipulative journalism. Revealingly titled, Hindu Threat to Christians: Convert or Flee, it paints Hindus as oppressors. French schools prohibit students from displaying religious symbols in any manner including the clothes they wear. Sikh students cannot wear turbans; neither can Muslim girls wear headscarves. The French ideal of promoting religious harmony is admirable. In his recent, brief visit, Manmohan Singh requested the French President Sarkozy o allow Sikh boys to wear turbans to school. In the same breath, Singh also promised Sarkozy that he would initiate stern and speedy action to stem religious violence in Orissa and Karnataka. Notably, Manmohan Singh did not mention why attacks occurred in these states. Upon his return, he contemplated a snake-in-the-grass attempt to dissolve the state governments. It is no secret that “President’s rule” really means rule of the Congress party in these states.

With no support from a democratically-elected government, and no clear Constitutional means to stem the disasters of missionary activity, it is unsurprising that ordinary Hindus have resorted to violent means of solving the problem themselves. The Hindu backlash is not wanton or unprovoked-it is an endeavour to defend their ancestrally-cherished dharma. That the government has lost any sense of moral responsibility is evident from the way it has been handling recent Islamic terror attacks, which are occurring in waves. Post September 11 2001, there has not been a single attack on the American soil. However, terror attacks have been occurring almost everyday across India. The aim of Islamic terror is to sustain attacks till India is demoralized, paving way for an eventual political takeover. From Lenin to our own Maoists/Naxals and the neighbourhood dictator, Prachanda every system of organized terror subscribes to this final, political ambition. Lack of political will and willful abdication of responsibility has only intensified loathing, distrust, fear, and desperation in the minds of millions of Hindus. When the state fails in its duty as a protector, won’t citizens find their own means of self-defence out of sheer dismay? In this context, will mass condemnation of Hindus assuage their feeling of helplessness, or prevent them from defending themselves?

Casteist politicians, media, and self-proclaimed intellectuals take refuge in hypocrisy and hollow platitudes instead of thinking through this problem with the seriousness and urgency it merits. It is time they showed an ounce of honesty in confronting the truth.

Francois Gautier concludes his essay with these words:

Are we heading then towards a Christian India under Sonia Gandhi’s helm? It would be a tremendous loss not only to India, but also to the world. For in India, you find the only living spirituality left on this planet.

The gruesome murder of 84-year old Swami Laxmanananda in Kandhamal, Orissa, has exposed the ease with which evangelical groups can access guns, grenades, and other murderous weapons in the pursuit of their agenda to impose their own religion by annihilating local faiths and cultures everywhere.

No one takes seriously the administration claim that the murder is the handiwork of Maoists. It is another matter that in Kandhamal there is little to differentiate Christians and Maoists – the cadres reputedly overlap, and both share the common goal of uprooting Hindu dharma. Indian media followed the Western media in raising a hue and cry over the murder of evangelist Graham Staines, but did not show the same respect to the octogenarian Swami who devoted his life to the welfare of the most downtrodden tribal communities.

The media gave space to the asinine remarks of Australian evangelist Gladys Staines, who has no locus standi to comment on the internal affairs of India , and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was quick to give audience to well-organised Christian leaders after the Bishop of Rome expressed displeasure over native Hindu reaction to grave provocation. The Italian origin and Roman Catholic faith of Congress party president Sonia Gandhi cannot be overlooked in this context – it constitutes a sub-text to the Christian vociferousness, which seeks to drown out the fact that the Krishna Janmasthami murders in the ashram premises was an exceedingly well-organised and premeditated crime.

The tremendous and spontaneous Hindu reaction – paralleling the upsurge over the Amarnath yatra land issue in Jammu – has taken the nation by surprise. But the root causes of the Orissa unrest have been completely glossed over by the media.

Kandhamal is part of the erstwhile undivided district of Phulbani; it was carved into a separate district on 1 April 1994. It derives its name from the Kandh (Kondha) tribes who dominate the area, comprising approximately 51.96% of the 6.5 lakh population of the district. Kandhs are Hindus and enjoy Scheduled Tribe status.

The other community with a significant local presence is the Panas, a Scheduled Caste, who constitute about 16.89% of the district population. The Panas are overwhelmingly Christian and are educationally, economically and politically more advanced. They were the prime targets of the pioneering Christian missionaries who settled in Katingia village of Daringibadi block of Kandhamal in 1883. The Kandh tribe led by Chakara Bisoi, Dohara Bisoi, Dina Kondh and Lochana Kondh valiantly fought the British in 1857, and it was only in 1884 that the British finally managed to subdue this region with the help of converted Panas from present-day Ganjam and Nayagarh districts bordering Kandhamal.

Through untiring efforts spanning four decades, Swamiji succeeded in awakening the Kandhs. This in turn posed a major threat to the political and economic hegemony of the Church. The converted Panas are highly placed in Government and politics. Rajya Sabha MP Radha Kant Nayak is a converted Pana and a blue-eyed boy of the Congress president. He doubles up as chief of the local chapter of World Vision, a highly energetic Christian outfit. Nayak is also connected with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). He uses his MP's fund to distribute largesse to converted Panas through his own NGO called 'Nishwas'. His alleged role in the murderous attack on Swami Laxmanananda on 24 December 2007 has not been probed to the satisfaction of the local populace.

Christian bureaucrats like Issac Behera and retired IPS officer John Nayak, Lok Sabha MP Sugrib Singh, and former Steel and Mines Minister Padmanabh Behera are other heavyweights who are hand-in-glove with missionaries. The Church reportedly gets massive funds from USA , Italy , Australia and several European countries, and Swami Laxmanananda's demand for an enquiry into the quantum of foreign funds flowing into the region and their utilization should in the fitness of things be accorded the status of the last testament.

There is a long-standing dispute between converted Panas and Hindu Kandh tribals. Under the law, Panas cannot own forest land as they are not Scheduled Tribes. Throwing legality to the winds, several converted Panas have illegally grabbed forest land. Kandhs who have been rendered landless are forced to work as farm labourers on lands illegally occupied by Panas. Seething discontent over this state of affairs first manifested in the 1994 Kandh-Pana clashes that left 50 persons dead.

Despite a High Court order to evict encroached land, Christians continue to illegally occupy the land. Being Scheduled Castes, Panas are legally not allowed reservation benefits after conversion. One way they get around this law is by concealing their conversion. Radha Kant Nayak, a 1962 batch IAS officer, is widely reputed to have gained entry into the IAS through Scheduled Caste quota by fraudulently concealing his convert status. The growing clamour for public scrutiny of such cases is said to be behind the setting up of the Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission, which expectedly recommended reservation benefits for all SC converts.

Another way to beat this law is by securing Scheduled Tribe status. This will enable Panas to enjoy reservation even after conversion, as an oversight in the Constitution did not deprive ST converts of reservation rights. Naturally, Church-inspired organizations such as the Phulbani Kui Jana Kalyan Sangh are clamouring for Scheduled Tribe status for Panas.

Moreover, the delimitation of constituencies has resulted in the reservation of the lone Lok Sabha and all Vidhan Sabha Assembly segments for Scheduled Tribes. The posts of President of the Zilla Parishad, Block Chairmen and majority of elected Zilla Parishad members and posts in Panchayati Raj institutions have also been reserved for Scheduled Tribes. The flip side of this is a loss of political and social relevance for the Christian Panas and the Church. Hence the sense of urgency in the demand for Scheduled Tribe status for Christian Panas.

The Kandhs speak the Kui dialect, which is also known to the majority of Panas. Disregarding the fact that 'Kui' is a dialect, not a community, Panas are falsely claiming to be Kuis and demanding ST status!

In 1981, the J.B. Patnaik government bowed to the Christian lobby and recommended that Kuis be included in the list of Scheduled Tribes. The Christian lobby won a major victory in 2002 when a Presidential order included Kuis in the list of STs. The Phulbani Kui Jana Kalyan Sangh promptly filed a writ petition in the High Court claiming that in Kandhamal district, Kuis were wrongly listed as a Scheduled Caste instead of Scheduled Tribe in land revenue records and consequently deprived of Constitutional concessions granted to STs.

Finally, the High Court asked the State Government to take a decision in the matter. Mercifully, the State Government submitted that as the Record of Rights of the Panas did not mention them as a Scheduled Tribe, their demand could not be met. The Orissa Government has consistently maintained that "this demand is not based on historical and anthropological facts."

Kandh organizations such as Phulbani Kui Seva Samiti, Nikhil Utkal Kui Samaj, Kui Kul Samiti and Kui Sanskritik Parishad are struggling to stave off the Pana demand for Scheduled Tribe status. They have formed an umbrella organization called Kui Samanvaya Samiti to safeguard the rights of Kandhs.

More than anyone else, Swami Laxmanananda was a symbol of Kandh hopes and aspirations. The missionaries knew that the resurgent Kandh Hindus could force them to close shop. With Swamiji out of the way, the Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar, Msgr. Raphael Cheenath could afford to indulge in some bluster. Speaking after Swamiji's murder, Cheenath bragged that the roots of the Church in these parts were deep and that the Church would continue to provide light for generations to come.

In Jammu , Hindus have risen in the defence of Dharma, throwing up new leaders in the process. Orissa – land of Jagannath , Lingaraja, Kalinga-Jina – cannot lag behind. It owes this much to Swamiji.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><b>The saint who resisted missionary menace</b>

Posted April 25, 2006

The saga of 35 years of struggle by social reformer Swami Laxmananda Saraswati
By Debasis Tripathy

It was a hot noon of May 1970 in Orissa. Suddenly the news spread to every nook and corner of the state that some miscreants had set the idol of Lord Birupakhya at the famous Shiva temple afire. The temple was situated at the small tribal village Chakapad in the Kandhamal district, Orissa. The innocent Hindus were shocked and had one question: Who will rescue us from such religious terrorism? But nobody was there to answer. When the Hindus of the Kandhamal district and other tribal-dominated districts of Orissa were suffering from the inhuman acts and conversion bids of Christian missionaries, they got a little ray of hope. A saffron-clad saint?Swami Laxmananda Saraswati?reached there as the nemesis of all the missionary activities. Due to his decades-long restless struggle, the social, religious and economic conditions of thousands of tribals have improved. Now they have learnt to lead an independent life free from all the bondages and as such, the conversion bids of the missionaries have been given a goodbye.

The year 1965 witnessed anti-cow-slaughter movement all over India. The whole country stood up against the killing of cows. The news of this movement organised by the RSS reached Rishikesh. When Laxmanandaji heard of this, he could not sit silently. He organised some of his friends and convinced them about the necessity to stop cow-slaughter.

?In Rishikesh, one evening when I was reading the Upanishad on the bank of the Ganges, I came to know about the Goraksha Andolan, launched by RSS. I thought a while and decided to join it. I tried to convince my friends, most of whom agreed,? said Swami Laxmananda.

Swamiji further said taking his saffron-clad sannyasi friends with him, he marched towards Delhi to join the Goraksha Andolan. They staged a protest meet in front of the residence of the then Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi. This protest continued for more than a week. During that time, fortunately he came into contact with Shri Guriji, the then Sarsanghachalak of RSS. The lofty personality of Shri Guruji influenced him a lot. Words of Shri Guruji made him determinant for the service of rashtra, dharma and satya.

?I saw Shri Guruji in Delhi. We were sitting on the same dais. He told me: 'Swamiji Bharat Mata is calling you'. I was impressed with his powerful words, which are even now echoing in my ears. I refused to return to Rishikesh?, says Laxmanandaji.

During that movement, he was arrested and jailed for 19 days. After his release from the jail, he was sent to Orissa to monitor the goraksha movement. In 1967, he reached Orissa and the goraksha movement took momentum under his strong supervision. In 1968, under his guidance, Vishwa Hindu Parishad took shape in Orissa.

In 1969-70, he arrived at Phulbani district headquarters of Kandhamal district. The Church had chalked out a dangerous plan to finish the Hindus in those areas. The plan?Mission Christ Sthan?was intended to create one separate territory for the Christians. The missionaries were keen to make their programme successful in Koraput, Gajpati, Phulbani, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Bhanjanagar, Daspalla, Khanda-pada, Boudh, Sonapur, Athamallik and Angul districts, says Swamiji. ?Huge funds from Christian countries were flowing into these regions. I got this news from my friend and the eminent Sangh swayamsevak Shri Raghunath Sethi and rushed to Kandhamal to save Hindus from the clutches of missionaries.?

?When I heard about the plan of the pastors to create a Christ Sthan, I decided to visit those areas. Communication was not as good as it is today. I did not have any money even to travel. Hence, I begged alms in places like Khurda and Nayagarh and managed to collect 30 rupees. With this amount in hand, and taking the blessings of Lord Jagannath I reached there,? he said.

Swamiji reached Chakapad, a small tribal village, 30 kms from the Phulbani district headquarters. He established his ashram there in 1969 and dedicated himself to the service of mankind.

Swamiji started his service and reform work, making Chakapad his centre. To promote education, he established a school and a Sanskrit college at Chakapad in 1969. To save the Vanvasis from the clutches of missionaries, he started a unique plan. He inspired the locals to have a kirtan mandali in each village. He started delivering religious preaching among Vanvasis, which proved advantageous in curbing the missionary activities. Swamiji united the Vanvasis of Kandhamal and educated them to be conscious of the missionary activities and to develop their economic and social conditions. As a result, the missionaries had no way but to cancel their ?Christ Sthan? project and to leave Kandhamal.

For his series of social services and his remarkable contribution to the Vanvasi society, he has been conferred with the title of ?Adharma Chakra Vidarak Dakshya Maharath? and ?Vedanta Kesari? by the revered Shankaracharya of Gobardhan Peeth, Puri, Swami Nishchalananda Saraswati and Gajpati, King of Orissa in 1999. For his unique contribution to Vanvasi society, Swamiji was felicitated at the three-day mammoth Vanvasi rally, organised in Chakapad from April 8 to 10, 2006, in which about five lakh people participated.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

(Cross-posted from the "War on Maoists" thread, because it's quite obvious after the assassination of Laxmanananda that the supposed "Maoists" are in fact the armed wing of the Missionary machine engaging in false-flag terrorist operations).

First the Italian National Congress got its allies to frame the Shankaracharya of Kanchi... now, their Christist terrorism wing, the so-called "Maoists", have threatened the life of the Puri Shankaracharya.

Hindu leaders who stand up to the predatory missionaries are either being assassinated, as was Laxmanananda in Orissa, or subjected to political imprisonment and intimidation by organs of the state, as Dayananda Swami in Gujarat during the Malegaon witch-hunt.

Hindus who retaliate at the grass-roots level against these atrocities being perpetrated against them in their own land, are systematically demonized by the media throughout the rest of the world.

And finally, the few effective tools that our proudly democratic state still retained in its arsenal against the sort of "Maoist" terrorist armies deployed by the Christists, have also been subverted by the Malegaon witch hunts. Anti-terrorist laws like POTA have been smeared and brought into public disrepute by the Italian National Congress deliberately, with malice aforethought, applying them to the persecution of its political enemies. The Military, particularly Military Intelligence in which Colonel Purohit repeatedly distinguished himself, has been brought into disrepute by the systematic slandering of its officer corps.

What means of redressal remain to the Hindus of India, subject to a tyranny-by-Mainority in the only nation they have to call home?

Maoists warns Puri Seer with dire consequence

Bhubaneswar ( Orissa): The outlawed CPI (Maoists) on Tuesday warned Puri Sankaracharya Jagadaguru Swami Nischalananda Saraswati with dire consequence.

The outfit in a threat letter, that sent to the Gobardhan Pitha in Puri, about 60 kilometers from here, has alleged that the Hindu Seer has been spreading communal feelings and dividing society on religious lines.

After receiving the threat letter, the disciples of the Hindu Seer, have filed an FIR with Sea Beach Police State in the pilgrimage town. Meanwhile, police have started investigation into the issue.

“We have reviewed security measures at Gobardhan Pitha and efforts are on to know, where the letter was dispatched,” a top Intelligence official said. Puri Superintendent of Police Asit Kumar Panigrahi while confirming the threat letter, said, Investigations are on and the police force was alert. He also said a close vigil was being maintained in and around the Mutt.

Since the fire brand Hindu Seer known for his bold stand against conversion, and has been demanding stern action against the anti Hindu forces responsible for conversion has earned the wrath non-Hindu fundamentalists.

Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs had directed Orissa Government to immediately provide Z Category security for Puri Seer in view of threat to life. MHA reportedly received inputs from intelligence agencies regarding threat on Puri Seer’s life.

On November 28, 2007, the Seer had received a threat mail from al-Qaeda, warning him of dire consequences if he does not embrace Islam. The disciples of Shankaracharya had received the postcard, carrying the threat.

Earlier, the Gobardhan mutt authorities received a threat letter, which stated that the mutt would be blown up and the Seer eliminated. Gobardhan Peetha is one of the four important mutts of Hindu faith in the country founded by Adi Sankaracharya.

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) on Wednesday wrote to the Prime Minister seeking a more comprehensive definition of “terrorist” in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill, 2008, introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Drawing attention to the definition of terrorist in Section 15 of the principal Act, the CBCI noted that the definition of a terrorist in this particular section was limited in comparison to what was given in the National Security Guard (NSG) Act, 1986. “The definition of terrorist in the NSG Act includes anyone who tries to adversely affect harmony among different sections of people.”

Hate campaigns

According to the CBCI, the definition of terrorist included in the NSG Act should be used in view of the communal violence that take place in the country through inflammatory speeches and hate campaigns towards religious minorities by anti-social elements.
<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Heck, all missionaries, John Dayal etc can all be declared terrorists now. Thanks CBCI!

You heathens have no rights in your own country. But alien parasitism has all rights, and has first claim on resources too (courtesy the alien catholic tyrant and her sockpuppet that pretends to be Sikh).

YSR's Son-in-law Evangelist
<b>Andhra CM son-in-law's mammoth religious meet draws flak</b>

Mohammed Siddique in Hyderabad | December 15, 2008 | 19:49 IST

Evangelist Anil Kumar's debut in Secunderabad bore all the hallmarks of a gala event. A sprawling parade ground packed with nearly 1.5 lakh people, a 250-member choir and guests including Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, his wife and only daughter.

So why are the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Telugu Desam Party crying foul over the Evangelist's religious sessions?

For Anil Kumar is YSR Reddy's son-in-law, and the Opposition parties have started questioning how Anil Kumar's mammoth congregations were funded.

Very few people were aware of who Anil Kumar was till hundreds of huge hoardings,? welcoming people to his 'Grand Christmas celebrations', sprung up all over the twin cities of Hyderabad-Secunderabad.

After it was revealed that Anil Kumar was the chief minister's son-in-law, the TDP and BJP demanded an inquiry into the source of funding for such large-scale publicity, insisting that ill gotten money was being used to promote the Evangelist.

<b>While Anil Kumar avoided the media, YSR quipped, "What is wrong in it," when asked about the publicity machinery being used to promote his son-in-law.</b>

On the night of the congregation, Anil Kumar made a grand entry and left a deep impression with his oratorical skills and his inspiring speech.

Anil Kumar told the congregation that he had experienced many miraculous changes in his own life after he adopted Christianity.

"All you have to do is believe in Him," he exhorted the people, stressing that God will take care of everything and everybody if people have faith in Him. "No doctor has a treatment for AIDS but there is a supernatural doctor who can do it," he said.

<b>Reddy, his wife Vijaya and daughter Sharmila also addressed the congregation. While the chief minister restricted himself to extending Christmas greetings to the people and praying for peace in the state, his daughter stole the show with her spirited speech. She drew huge applause when she quoted a passage from the Bible, "God gives us power but we should rejoice in God".?</b>

Though Brother Anil Kumar has held such congregations at many places across the state including Rajahmundry and Warangal, this was the first time that he held such a session in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

<b>Incidentally, Anil Kumar is being promoted as an Evangelist at a time when the ruling Congress is embroiled in a running feud with another internationally famous evangelist K A Paul, who is facing legal problems in the state.</b>

<b>"Rajasekhara Reddy is promoting Anil Kumar so that he can become more popular than K A Paul," alleged TDP leader N Rajakumar</b>. <i>{Is that all he cares about?}</i>

Meanwhile, YSR's only son YS Jaganmohan Reddy is being groomed for a political role, and he will contest the next Lok Sabha elections from Kadapa constituency.
<b>A plot to conquer India by conversion</b>

By JG Arora

Since Bharat has forgotten its ancient Sanskrit adage, “Shathe shaathyam samaacharet” (treat the wicked in his own wicked way), its tormentors are having a free run.

Expansionist forces are waging a relentless war to demolish Hinduism and Hindu civilisation the way they have already wiped out many native religions and cultures from Europe, America, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, numerous Islands and parts of Asia.

On August 23, 2008, just before Krishnajanmashtami, an important Hindu festival, 84 years old Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four other Hindu sages were gunned down in girls hostel at Kandhamal in Orissa. Their only crime was that they were resisting fraudulent conversions by foreign-funded Christian missionaries.

At present, the worst problems faced by India are the demographic invasion by crores of Pak-Bangla infiltrators, and conversion of Hindus to Christianity through fraud and charade of charity by missionaries.

If Pak-Bangla combine wants to Islamise India through countless terrorists and infiltrators, missionaries want to Christianise India through unlimited foreign funds.

Unilateral war
Though religious freedom can never mean the freedom to convert; and though in 1977, vide its judgement reported as Rev. Stainislaus v. State of Madhya Pradesh (AIR 1977 SC 908), the Supreme Court held that Article 25 (1) of Indian Constitution does not grant any right to convert any person to one’s own religion, there is no halt to aggressive evangelisation.

While addressing missionaries in New Delhi on November 7, 1999, the late Pope John Paul II gave a call to convert Asia to Christianity as follows:-

“Just as the first millennium saw the cross firmly planted in the soil of Europe, and the second in that of America and Africa, so may the Third Christian Millennium witness a great harvest of faith on this vast and vital continent.”

And his successor and present Pope Benedict XVI reiterated conversion agenda with the words, “The church is by its very nature missionary; its first task is evangelisation.”

Hindus in India and Nepal are prime targets for this harvest of faith. Even if old horrors like Goa Inquisition (1560 to 1812) heaped on Hindus by the church are kept aside, what is happening now is equally horrible.

Having already conquered North-East India, many global missionary organisations are sending enormous funds to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in India for converting Hindus to Christianity through fraud, allurement and coercion.

Reinhard Bonnke, the global evangelist famous for his crusades in Africa, has diverted his attention to India. Pat Robertson, the American founder of Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), also wants aggressive evangelisation of India.

Missionaries are far superior in marketing than any MBA. Within a few decades, they converted Buddhist South Korea into a Christian majority country. And they want to repeat that success in India.

Conversion blitzkrieg
Missionary activity in India is aimed at destroying Hindu religion and culture; and has nothing to do with spirituality. While many Hindu religious leaders are parroting the dangerous falsity that all religions are the same (sarvadharmasambhav), missionaries are demolishing Hinduism by converting Hindus.

Several global missionary organisations were running a co-ordinated conversion campaign in India known as AD 2000. These activities were later brought under the Joshua Project.

Joshua Project is a war-like project to invade and Christianise India. It has collected the necessary population data about each village and town in India, and has prepared the area specific strategy to bring maximum conversions.

All over India, churches are being built even in remote villages (with no Christian population) to Christianise the local populations. Entire India is facing a blitzkrieg of missionary aggression.

As reported in a section of media, D. Ron Watts, a Canadian missionary and Dorothy Watts, his American wife, and their cohorts have converted several lakhs of vulnerable Hindus to Christianity in Andhra Pradesh during the last few years. Though they came to India on Business visas, they were engaged in conversions violating their visa terms.

Tamil Nadu government’s revocation of anti-conversion law has further boosted conversions in Tamil Nadu.

Missionaries are targetting Sikhs too; and after converting 56 Sikhs to Christianity at Goindwal Sahib, a Sikh holy place in Punjab in 2005, they have stepped up such activities.

Fraudulent exploitation
Conversion of vulnerable Hindus through fraud and inducement is a big industry in India employing hundreds of thousands of missionaries wearing the mask of social service. More Hindus they convert, more money they get.

In his write-up, “The war against Hinduism”, Stephen Knapp has described various subterfuges employed to get convert to Christianity in India. Missionaries give loans to vulnerable Hindus who cannot repay. The said loans stand waived the moment the debtors become Christian. And more rewards await those who bring more Hindus to the church. He has also described stage-managed mass healings for mass conversions. And then there are “miracle boxes” kept in churches where the poor can write their wishes which are fulfilled to bring them to Christianity.

To induce conversions, some missionaries bear Hindu names, dress like Hindu sannyasis, and call their organisations Ashrams.

Evangelists treat natural calamities as opportunities to purchase new converts. They offer relief to helpless victims of tragedy in exchange of their religion. Tsunami that struck Tamil Nadu in 2004 saw mass proselytisation of vulnerable Hindus. At some places hit by tsunami, Christian groups refused to give relief supplies when the victims refused to change their faith.

Predators or ‘victims’?
Missionaries pretend to be ‘victims’ if their predatory attempts at proselytisation are resisted.

Recent circulation of a number of contrived stories about the alleged attacks on Christians in mainstream anti-Hindu media suppresses the fact that Hindu reaction in Orissa was triggered by the murder of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, and in Karnataka by denigration of Hindu gods in the book, Satya Darshini— distributed by some missionaries.

Unfortunately, most of the mainstream media in India is anti-Hindu, and hides missionary aggression. But it dubs those resenting this aggression as ‘communal’. While the said media ignored the outrageous murder of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, as also the denigration of Hinduism in Satya Darshini, it over-blew the natural Hindu reaction following these appalling attacks on Hindus and Hindu faith.

Way out

Since those who behave like sheep, are eaten by the wolves, much of the injury suffered by Hindus is self-inflicted by their capitulation before their tormentors.

Ever since 1947, Indian government’s policy of perverse secularism (which in reality means anti-Hinduism) has been leading to gradual liquidation of Hindu Bharat.

The so-called ‘secular’ India has proved to be a disaster for Hindus. To prevent the creation of more Pakistans and Bangladeshs on Bharat’s soil by countless Pak-Bangla terrorists and infiltrators, and to prevent more Hindu lands (like North-East India) going to missionaries, ‘secular India ’ has to be transformed into ‘Hindu Bharat’.

Logically, in 1947, on India’s Partition on religious basis and creation of Pakistan as demanded by Muslims, Bharat should have been declared a Hindu nation. But the problem can be solved even now by declaring Bharat a Hindu country. No one can object to Bharat being declared a Hindu nation when all the 57 Muslim-majority countries are declared as Islamic countries, and many Christian majority countries are Christian countries.

Hindu Bharat will give justice to all and appease none. In Hindu Bharat, there will be one law and one nation; no distinction of majority and minority; and no discrimination, whatsoever, against any community.

Apart from protecting Bharat’s Hindu identity, Hindu Bharat will crush the daily Pak-Bangla terrorist attacks and demographic invasion, as also foreign-funded missionaries’ conversion menace. Hindu Bharat will ban the inflow of foreign funds meant for subversion and conversion, and will also ban conversions effected by fraud, allurement or coercion. Hindu Bharat will also remove laws which discriminate against Hindus.

Accordingly, for the very survival of Hindus and Hinduism, all pro-Hindu individuals and organisations must unite to transform India into a Hindu nation by all peaceful, constitutional and lawful means.

Hindu Bharat will ensure that Hinduism survives and prevails. And that will be the apt tribute to Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and his associates who sacrificed their lives while defending Hinduism.

Unholy goings-on cloud Kerala's churches
IANS

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Christian priests being arrested for murder, a nun committing suicide, another alleging torture in a convent... 2008 has been full of unsavoury incidents for churches in Kerala, except for one historic moment - the sainthood of Sister Alphonsa.

Christians in Kerala account for around 23 percent of the 32 million population, of which the Catholic community accounts for more than 50 percent, followed by the Syrian Orthodox Church, and then come at least half a dozen other churches.

The most laudable event for Christians in Kerala and in the country was when Sister Alphonsa was canonised by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct 12, making her the first Indian woman to be sainted.

The first incident to tarnish the church was when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), investigating the 16-year-old murder mystery of Sister Abhaya, arrested two priests and a nun for the crime. Sister Abhaya, a resident of Pious X Hostel, was found dead in the well of the Kottayam convent March 27, 1992.

On Nov 19, the 13th team of the CBI set up to probe the case - after 12 earlier teams failed - arrested Father Jose Putarika, 56, a former Malayalam professor at the Kottayam college where Abhaya studied, Father Thomas Kottor, 61, the Diocesan chancellor of the Catholic Church at Kottayam, and Sister Seffi, who was a resident of the convent when the incident took place.

Another instance that the Catholic church would like to forget is of a bishop being asked to step down. In October, Pope Benedict XVI placed on suspension John Thattumkal, 58, the bishop of the Latin Diocese here, after a major row over his "adopting" a woman in her mid-30s.

Another instance is of Thanku Brother, who heads the Kottayam-based 'Heavenly Feast', a decade-old new generation church. The priest, who faces a court case under the Wildlife Act after the head of a deer was found in his home, was targetted by Hindu groups, which alleged that his church stood on government land and there were no proper documents.

He is alleged to have paid the state-run Doordarshan television money to run a programme on him and information about the programme's schedule was advertised widely in newspapers. However, Thanku Brother's television interview early this month was cancelled after several Hindu groups asked the Doordarshan office not to telecast the programme.

In August, Pappachan, a cook who works with the Bishop's house at Kollam, alleged that his daughter, nun Anupa Mary, an inmate at the St Mary's Convent at Kollam, had committed suicide after she was tortured in the convent. The police are investigating the case.

Pappachan has alleged that his daughter took the extreme step after she was tortured, including sexual exploitation, by senior nuns in the convent.

Another case which saw the stock of the church take a nose dive was when the relatives of Treesa Thomas, a 59-year-old nun in Kerala, went public in November saying that she has been forcibly kept in mental hospitals for over a month to stop her from publishing details of "undesirable goings-on" in her convent.

Treesa, a nun at the Divine Mary Convent at Anchal in Kollam district, 50 km from here, was first admitted to a private hospital in Idukki district in October and then shifted to the Government Mental Hospital here on the grounds that she is mentally unstable.

Fr. Stephen Alathara, spokesperson of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference, says the church is worried about the latest goings-on.

"But in the last 2,000 years of Christianity, the church has faced several ups and downs and they have emerged stronger after every downslide. Likewise in Kerala, the church is faced with external and internal issues and the silver lining is that after every downslide we have seen the laity come closer more than ever before," Alathara told IANS.

He referred to the church taking to the streets against a Class 7 Social Science text book, which according to the Christian community, was vague, anti-religion, injected communist ideology into young minds and distorted the rich history of the country.

"We are supremely confident that like in the past, the church will come out unscathed and be more stronger," said Alathara.
