New Delhi: Refuting claim of innocence by the then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh with regard to demolition of Babri mosque, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Giriraj Kishore on July 1 asserted that Singh had himself told him that the Babri mosque could be reached only as long as he was in the government.

Kishore told reporters, "The then Chief Minister Kalyan Singh told me that you can reach the mosque only as long I am in the government and not after that."

He said the kind of statements Singh was making these days were not proper. He is a mature politician and should not make such statements, Kishore said.

In reply to a question, he said the fact was that there was no mosque there and the karsevaks had demolished an old structure for construction of a grand and beautiful
temple and such things were common everywhere.

Those opposing this “friendship”, he said, would only be helping the BJP. He said the main objective of his “friendship” with the SP leader was to “destroy the BJP and prevent it from coming to power at the Centre”.

Under fire from Muslims for courting Kalyan Singh, Mulayam Singh has launched a damage-control exercise, meeting and assuring Muslim leaders that there is no alliance and that their “friendship” will bring about “the downfall of the BJP”. SP general secretary Amar Singh even visited Deoband.

Last night, Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh met Kalyan Singh at his Lucknow residence. Kalyan Singh declined to reveal details, saying they discussed electoral strategy. He denied reports that Amar Singh had asked him to apologise for the demolition of the Babri Masjid.

He said Muslims had a right to take pride in their faith and Hindus had a right to take pride in Hindutva.

“Certain elements have tried to create enmity and bitterness between communities for selfish interests. I want all social forces to jointly fight such conspiracies,” he said.

MUMBAI: The Muslim intelligentsia and ulema have dismissed former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh's apology for the demolition of the Babri Masjid
as sheer political opportunism. A section of the ulema also believe that mere apology for the heinous crime is meaningless in absence of a promise to rebuild the mosque.

"Who are Muslims to forgive those who demolished the mosque which belongs to no one but Allah? Let Kalyan Singh apologise to Allah for his crime,'' Maulana Hameed Noamani of Jamiatul Ulema-e-Hind said.

The poll-eve apology comes at a time when Muslim anger against Mulayam Singh Yadav and his party is building up. Political pundits say the apology is unlikely to making any difference to the Muslim mood in UP. "They are misjudging the Muslims. They think Muslims are babies who get swayed by such opportunist statements. It is time political parties treated Muslims as grown-ups,'' former bureaucrat Syed Shahabuddin, who led the movement to protect the mosque through the Babri Masjid Action Committee in the 1990s, said.

<b>Secular activists are equally appalled by the timing of Singh's apology. "There is no remorse and no desire for a reconciliation in his statement. It seems mere lip service. But my concern is whether a mosque is more important for Muslims than their security," said Javed Anand of Muslims for Secular Democracy (MSD).</b>

"Mayawati, who campaigned for Narendra Modi just after the Gujarat massacre, is the new Muslim messiah. Sanjay Nirupam, who backed the Shiv Sena's anti-Muslim policies, is acceptable to Muslims after he joined the Congress. So why is Singh untouchable,'' he asked. "Muslims have been fed on emotional slogans for long. They must decide what is more important - a demolished mosque or a secure, bright future for their children,'' Javed added.

In spite of the overwhelming majority of the common simpleton Hindus at large, we have very high concentration of informed, proud Hindus. No other religion can boast such high ratio. Yet it will be our misfortune if we all think that we should respect the outcome of the corrupt electoral system of the totaly faulty and highly inimical constitution. The alternative is the organization of a Hindu Sena.

The problem is we could not even throw a youthful and dynamic leadership bereft of caste and regional affiliation to a legal party. Belief in secularism has robbed us of our very being. This is the sad predicament for a religion with a glorious past.

BANGALORE: Barely a month after Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa promised to focus on development, by winding up ‘Operation Lotus,’ the poaching of rival sitting MLA has continued unabated by the BJP. This time it is to improve its tally in the Lok Sabha.

The BJP on Wednesday netted sitting Congress MLA and former minister Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli from Bidar district. Nagamarapalli is likely to be fielded from Bidar in the coming Sabha polls. The New Indian Express on January 11 had reported on BJP’s plan to “roll out Operation Lotus - II,” to strengthen its base in the run-up to the Sabha polls. Nagamarapalli, a powerful Lingayat leader and five-time MLAla, submitted his resignation to Speaker Jagadish Shettar hours after announcing his desire to join the saffron brigade. He has been representing the Congress in the Assembly from Bidar segment.

Nagamarapalli later told reporters that he would officially join the BJP in the presence of Advani, Yeddyurappa and other senior leaders at a rally to be organised in Bidar soon.

Though Nagamarappalli said that the good programmes of the BJP made him quit the Congress, the real reason is said to be a bailout from inquires into the alleged irregularities in Bidar DCC Bank and the Karanja Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane headed by him.When asked, he said that he had come with no pre-conditions and would contest the Lok Sabha polls if his new party decided to field him. Nagamarapalli and former MLA from Basavakalyan, Marutirao Mule, met senior BJP leader L K Aadvani at the HAL Aairport and sought his blessings before joining the party. Aa senior leader admitted that the party may poach more rival party leaders in the coming days.

Both Mulayam Singh Yadav and Kalyan Singh seem to have realised that jumping in and out of the secular-communal divide is not an easy proposition. The customary cynicism of politicians may have initially made them think otherwise.

Besides, there have been a number of instances of such migrations from one ideological camp to another, such as K C Pant’s from the Congress to the BJP and Shankar Sinh Vaghela’s from the BJP to the Congress. But Kalyan Singh’s case is different on two counts. One is that he may have played the game once too often considering that he has now left the BJP twice in search of greener pastures. Even in a political atmosphere known for sharp practice, such fickleness may not always pass muster.

His other disadvantage in the matter of finding a space for himself among the secularists is his unsavoury, in the eyes of the latter, background.

Since he did nothing as UP chief minister to stop the demolition of the Babri Masjid and later accepted the Supreme Court’s reprimand for this “failure” with a proud smile, Kalyan Singh is not exactly a favourite where the minorities and the liberals are concerned. It is this realisation that has apparently made Mulayam Singh Yadav have second thoughts about a tie-up with him. The Samajwadi Party leader may have earlier seen an alliance with the BJP rebel in terms of a consolidation of the backward caste and anti-BJP vote banks. To this end, he went to the extent of accommodating Kalyan Singh’s son in the Samajwadi Party.

But the Muslim factor has evidently made him rethink his tactics, especially in view of reports that Mayawati will hold out an olive branch to those members of the minority community who will desert Mulayam Singh Yadav. It is the same nervousness about how the Muslims will react to Kalyan Singh’s induction that explained the Congress’s uneasiness about the Samajwadi Party’s expediency. It will be relieved now that Mulayam Singh Yadav is backing off although an informal understanding between the two OBC leaders cannot be ruled out. For the present, however, Kalyan Singh may find himself in a predicament analogous to Trishanku’s in the Mahabharata. One way out for him is to completely disown his past, but such a renunciation is more likely to be seen as an insincere manoeuvre than as a genuine change of heart.

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Kalyan Singh seems to be in real soup. When he left the BJP and made friends with Mulayam Singh with great expectations, he would not have imagined that he would find himself in a quandary.

He said that he was insulted by the BJP and that he would work for the demolition of it in UP. He even tried to hoodwink the Muslim community by saying that he had resigned from the BJP in repentance for the demolition of Babri structure and that he would work for the welfare of the Muslims along with Mulayam Singh’s Samajwadi Party.

Mulayam, for his part, calculated that he could garner a considerable portion of BC votes by making friends with Kalyan, but it seems he had not expected a backlash from the Muslim community.

Also the Congress has warned him not to have any tie-up with Kalyan, or else, be prepared to lose its alliance. The seat-sharing between the Congress and the SP is already in a shoddy state and Kalyan factor has only worsened the situation.

In order to have a healthy alliance with Congress, Mulayam may not have an open tie-up with Kalyan, but may go in for a tacit understanding and this sort of a set up might be to the satisfaction of Congress too, for it is the weakest among the lot in Uttar Pradesh. It would be only happy to add some BC votes to the alliance because of Kalyan.

But Mayawati would not keep quiet and will use her complete armoury to dismantle this implicit assembly by convincing the Muslims. With regard to the BJP, it doesn’t have anything to lose because of Kalyan’s exit and it has already ignored him.

In fact, the party had given him a second lease of life, which Kalyan failed to utilise. When he returned to the party after quitting a few years back, the party recognised his services and fought the last Assembly elections in 2007 under his leadership.

But then, the result was not encouraging and it also gave an idea to the party about Kalyan Singh’s weakening potential. The party has also had an experience on the after effects of the departure of ‘high-profile’ leaders.

The recent example is that of Uma Barathi in Madhya Pradesh, who is now in hibernation after a complete rout in the last Assembly elections. She also challenged the BJP like how Kalyan is doing now, but could not win even in her own constituency. The same thing happened with Madanlal Kurana in Delhi.

He left the BJP and joined Uma Bharathi only to return within a few months. Last month, former Vice President Bairon Singh Shekawat exposed himself to the country by unnecessarily challenging Advani’s candidature for the post of Prime Minister.

For his stature, that too after having completed a full term in a Constitutional office, he should not have acted in an unbecoming manner, which has caused immense damage to his dignity and political grand standing. Now he has also gone into hibernation and the same may be the fate of Kalyan Singh soon.

DHANBAD: <b>Cracks have appeared in UPA in Jharkhand even before Lok Sabha election dates are announced. JMM leader and ex-CM Shibu Soren has blamed railway minister Lalu Yadav, leader of UPA alliance partner RJD, for the "current mess'' in the state.</b>

The JMM president regretted that after he resigned as CM, Lalu supported President's rule and did not favour the two names recommended by him for his successor. "No MLA wanted mid-term elections, but it was being imposed on them. This will have an adverse effect on UPA in the Lok Sabha elections,'' he said on Wednesday night at a party foundation day ceremony here.

Soren said he would talk to UPA president Sonia Gandhi and would take the next course of action after talks with her.

He said JMM would field its candidates for Lok Sabha elections in Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal. JMM candidates will be fielded against RJD nominees too, he added.

Soren's son Durga, who is general secretary of JMM, wondered "whether the JMM is in the UPA or not''. Its chief whip Mathura Prasad Mahto said "thinking is going on to ally with the BJP in Jharkhand''.

It is true. Between Congress and Kalyan Singh the choice is not at all difficult for Mulayam. Only thing is the damage to the SP on its Muslim base by the Congress propaganda is a consideration for him. I believe the Muslims would vote for Maya rather than Sonia if they choose not to vote for Mulayam. This is because, in spite of the inability of the BJP to mount a concerted attack on the Congress to seize the agenda for whatever reason, the people at large in India including in UP are finding that the Congress is a spent force. That way Congress isn't going to gain however it will increase the estrangement between the Congress and the SP. Muslims in UP are split three ways - between Mulayam's SP, Maya's BSP and only distant thirdly to the Congress.

My national estimate on the outcome of the next general election is that the BJP will be the single largest party with around 150 seats with Maya's BSP coming second and the Congress closely following it as the third party. This is because Andhra and Assam will be decisively voting against the Congress. Congress will also lose in other states because its allies will also lose such as in Tamilnadu and Bihar and possibly Maharashtra. Neither the NDA nor the UPA can muster majority. Maya and Jaya will be players unlike last time. It is hard to say what can happen in this scenerio.

Admitting that some youth leaders do get the advantage of belonging to political families, sha aasked party workers to work dedicatedly and not be disheartened. "Under the leadership of Rahul we have made a good beginning in Punjab and Uttrakhand where elections were held to select youth for various posts," Gandhi said

She singled out the works of Nehru family and the nature of work done by them.Specifying the legacy of the Nehru-Gandhi family, she said that it would not have been possible to fight melt-down but for the bold decision taken by Indira Gandhi [Images] when she nationalised the the banks in 1969. This has enabled India's financial sector to wheather today's global storms," she said.

The Congress president took credit for bringing 90% of the country, who had been working in the unorganized sector and giving them the benefits of Aam Adami Bima Yojana and the Indira Gandhi old age pension scheme.

In a 17-page review done on February 2, CBI's DIG Tillottama Varma disclosed that, while submitting its October 2007 report to SC, the agency had gone by the allegations made in a PIL without verifying any of those with Mulayam and his family members.

The representations made subsequently by Mulayam's family countering the PIL's allegations has put CBI in a quandary ever since Samajwadi Party bailed out UPA over the nuclear deal issue.

"All the facts if taken into account in the representations will make out no case of disproportionate assets," Varma said, while expressing anguish over the fact that CBI's report placed before SC in a sealed cover in October 2007 stated just the opposite.

New Delhi, Feb. 9: Congress-Samajwadi Party ties have hit a low ahead of tomorrow’s hearing of a CBI assets case against Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Amar Singh today accused the Congress of using the CBI as a “sword” against his party chief to put him under pressure during the ongoing seat-sharing talks.

“We supported the Congress-led government (in the July 2008 trust vote), which has crossed all limits to fix its opponents,” the Samajwadi general secretary said. Had the Samajwadis guessed how things would turn out, they would never have supported the Congress, he added.

Amar alleged that the CBI had registered the case without verifying the allegations made against Mulayam. “If I claim the Taj Mahal belongs to Manmohan Singh and India Gate belongs to Rahul Gandhi, will a disproportionate assets case be registered?”

Amar threw a challenge to the “Congress, CBI and Sonia Gandhi” saying if the charges against Mulayam were true, so were allegations against some Congress leaders.

Congress-Samajwadi relations have come under strain since seat talks began. The Congress wants to improve its performance in Uttar Pradesh by contesting from more constituencies but the Samajwadis don’t want to give it more than 15 seats.

Amar said: “The Left parties were good when (they were) supporting (the UPA). When they withdrew support, there was a case against (CPM leader) Pinarayi Vijayan in Kerala.”
