The Election Commission today slapped a notice on Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav for alleged distribution of cash by his party workers at a Holi function.

Taking congnisance of video footage telecast by television channels, the EC served a notice on the SP leader and sought a reply by March 14, an EC spokesman said.

Earlier, a report from Lucknow said that the EC has also sought a report from the District Magistrate on the incident.

The news regarding distribution of money at a "Holi Milan" programme in Yadav's native Saifai in Etawah district was aired by some news channels.

Some persons, allegedly SP workers, were shown distributing Rs 100 notes to people at the programme.

Meanwhile, Yadav, who arrived here from Etawah, told reporters that he had not given any money to anyone.

"It's a ritual to give 'inam' (reward) to those who dance and sing on Holi. But unfortunately this time I have not given anything to anyone", he said.

"If some workers have given something to them from their own pocket they have done so on their own," he said.

"Agar rok lagana hai to Holi ke tyohar par bhi rok laga do aap log", (If you want to put a bar you can do so for the festivities too) Yadav said.

Criticising electronic media for airing footage of the Holi function, Yadav said it was not fair to politicise traditions followed during festivals.

Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy criticised the Election Commision and alleged that its move was "merely to harass" Yadav and "soften" him towards the Congress.

"The decision of the Commission is ridiculous," he said.

"If a probe can be conducted for giving 'dakshina' on such an occasion (Holi celebrations), then going to a temple to pray for victory in the election and, therefore, putting money into the hundi would also come the EC scanner as an appeal to religion," he said.

The Samajwadi Party on Friday had a dig at Third Front constituents alleging that for them "secularism and communalism are like clothes used during different weather conditions."

Seeking to drive a wedge in the Third Front, SP general secretary Amar Singh claimed BSP president Mayawati would bid "sayonara" (goodbye) to the newly-formed alliance if she was offered a major cabinet berth by BJP after the Lok Sabha elections.

"She has no ideology, no common minimum programme. Her commitment is with power," Singh told reporters here.

He was commenting on BSP raking up the issue of Prime Ministerial candidate of the Third Front.

The senior BJP leader said security was one of the main concerns for making national identity cards mandatory, as the country was facing a grave challenge in the infiltration from Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries. âThere are more than two crore Bangladeshi immigrants staying illegally in the country,â Advani pointed out.

The MNIC, which has found a detailed mention in Advaniâs vision document for the use of Information Technology in transforming India, will also get a place in the BJP's election manifesto and the NDA's national agenda for governance.

âWe will come out with a separate manifesto of the BJP to reiterate our commitment to ideological issues. Murli Manohar Joshi is preparing the document,â Advani told reporters here.

It was expected that controversial issues like Article 370, Uniform Civil Code and Ram Temple which will not get a place in the NDAâs common minimum programme, may find mention in the BJP's manifesto.

The BJPâs manifesto would dispel the popular assumption that the BJP has left behind many issues that played crucial role in its phenomenal growth in the last two decades.

Burying all hopes of a possible seat-sharing arrangement with the Samajwadi Party in the politically crucial State of Uttar Pradesh, the Congress has decided to go it alone. The party is likely to contest at least 60 seats in the State. The number could go up if the party finds more suitable candidates.

After months of dialogue and public mudslinging between the two parties, the Congress has decided to come out with its second list of candidates this week. So far, the Congress has declared candidates for 24 of the 80 parliamentary seats in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress had contested 73 seats in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls and had won a mere nine.

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi held a marathon meeting with Congress general secretary in-charge of UP Digvijay Singh, State unit president Rita Bahuguna-Joshi and CLP leader Pramod Tiwari on Sunday. According to sources, Rahul felt that it was now too late for an alliance with the SP as it would only mean an agreement in Delhi and no understanding at the grassroots.

The SP has already declared candidates for 74 seats. Sources said that in Sundayâs meeting, the Congress leaders felt that there was no option before the party but to contest on its own and look at a post-poll alliance depending on the numbers other political parties notched up.

"Today, when he is Prime Minister, the Satyam [Get Quote] fiasco has surfaced. Why do such things happen when he is at the helm? Is it the result of his economic policies or something else," Modi told the large gathering.

On a complaint from the Congress party, Varun was slapped with a notice by the Election Commission charging him with violation of the model code of conduct for elections by his alleged making communal remarks during a rally held on March 6 in Pilibhit.

How can my doubting mind get confirmation he's not a plant from the KKKongressi side trying to defame Hindus with his scary-sounding rhetoric and no actual useful action in defence of Dharma. Here's a task for him - one that will not at all involve (threats of) islamically chopping off people's hands: he can send his aunty Sonia on a one-way ticket back to Italy. She's done far more damage to Hindus than merely lifting any of her fingers at them. I want her presence severed from Bharatam, no one needs her hand severed from her person.

I want purposeful action, not empty words however 'daring'.

And if people are going to say things that will get them slapped with the 'communal' tattoo, why can't they say the most relevant things: that they will eradicate christoislamism from the subcontinent, and thereby liberate the enslaved sheepish ummah from the terrorist ideologies oppressing both them and the inconvertibles of Bharatam? I guess threatening to chop off someone's hand will be found to be comparatively less communal after all, than openly accusing christoislamism of being no more than terrorism and promising to send the memetic disease packing (through educating the masses about it).

Axe has fallen on at least nine of the 14 sitting MPs from Gujarat as BJP central leadership endorsed Chief Minister Narendra Modiâs list of 21 candidates for the parliamentary elections on Tuesday.

The party has yet to decide candidates for four seats, two of which it bagged in the last poll. If Modi dropped these two sitting MPs, he would have retained just three MPs who contested the last election. The BJP also denied ticket to six candidates who unsuccessfully contested the 2004 elections.

The BJP central election committee met for the second time on Tuesday without party general secretary Arun Jaitley. The CEC cleared the names of 12 candidates for Bihar (including Shatrughan Sinha, Rajeev Pratap Rudy, Shahnawaz Hussain), 10 for Maharashtra, including general secretary Gopinath Munde, seven for Andhra Pradesh, six for Madhya Pradesh, four for Rajasthan and two for Uttar Pradesh.

But Modi stole the show by dropping eight sitting MPs from Kutch, Patan, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Porbandar, Panchmahal (earlier Godhra), Vadodra and Surat. Vallabhbhai Katharia, Somabhai Patel and Kanshiram Rana have paid the price for leading the rebellion against the Gujarat Chief Minister ahead of the 2007 Assembly poll. At the same time, Modi has decided to repeat sitting MP from Ahmedabad Harin Pathak and Mansukhbhai Vasava from Bharuch. Two candidates who lost in 2004 have got the chance again to contest the poll.

While Modi hogged the limelight in the evening with his list of âfresh and new facesâ, Jaitley remained in news throughout the morning. The party general secretary, who is opposing the appointment of Sudhanshu Mittal as co-in-charge for North East States, skipped the CEC meeting for the second consecutive time; even as the BJPâs top leadership and the RSS tried to thrash out a compromise formula.

Jaitley remains insistent that âcontroversial figuresâ should not have been given important assignments in the party. At the same time, Rajnath Singh is reportedly of the opinion that any rollback in Sudhanshuâs appointment may pose threat to the fate of the BJPâs alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad in Assam.

Sudhanshu has aggravated the matters further with refusing to step down, a formula earlier suggested by different leaders of the party to both Rajnath and Jaitley. Earlier, it was also proposed that the CEC meetings should be wrapped up and LK Advani and party chief Rajnath Singh should be authorised to select candidates. But the party later decided to go ahead with the meeting to pick up candidates for Gujarat, Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

In Bihar, State president Radha Mohan Singh (Purvi Champaran), former Union Ministers Shahnawaz Hussain (Bhagalpur), Rajeev Pratap Rudy (Saran), Shatrughan Sinha (Patna Sahib) have been roped in to contest election. Former IPS officer Gupteshwar Pandey who was seeking BJP ticket from Buxar has been disappointed. Consensus eluded on Betiah, Seohar and Darbhanga Lok Sabha seats and a decision on these would be taken later.

While party general secretary Gopinath Munde has been fielded from Beed (in Maharashtra), local stalwart Subhash Deshmukh (Madha) would be facing NCP chief and Union Minister Sharad Pawar.

Former Union Minister Ram Naik would be contesting Mumbai-North. He was defeated on the same seat last year by Congress candidate and cinestar Govinda.

The Congress may field Ranjeeta Ranjan, wife of Papuu Yadav, as party nominee. Ranjeeta was expected to take a final call on the issue.

Pilibhit (Uttar Pradesh): The strident communal overtones of the campaign being run by Varun Gandhi has left his own party (BJP) workers shocked.

The 29-year-old son of Maneka and late Sanjay Gandhi is contesting his maiden Lok Sabha election from Pilibhit constituency. Maneka Gandhi gave up the seat to ensure his easy entry into the Lok Sabha.

On Sunday Varun was issued a notice by the district authorities in Pilibhit. What came as a shocker is his staunchly pro-Hindu and rabid anti-Muslim vitriolic that his opponents and supporters say could trigger a communal clash.

From taking up issues like the ban on cow slaughter to asking a Sikh leader to leave a Hindu meeting, Varun has been ruffling feathers everywhere.

Though just one offensive remark captured by a TV channel drew the attention of the local authorities, the scion of the estranged Gandhi family has been busy making such statements all over Pilibhit.

EC seeks report on Varun's 'communal' remarks
While "Jai Shri Ram" is his battle-cry at all roadside meetings or assemblies, some of the other slogans being used are "Gau hatya rukwana hai, Varun Gandhi ko jitana hai" (Cow slaughter must stop, Varun Gandhi must win) and "Varun nahin yeh aandhi hai, doosra Sanjay Gandhi hai (Varun Gandhi is like a storm, he is another Sanjay Gandhi)".

Varun has already addressed three 'Hindu sammellans'. While the district administration has taken cognizance of his utterances at a meet in Barkhera on March 8, those at earlier meetings in Dalchand on March 6 and at Lalori Khera locality on February 22 have almost gone unnoticed.

On March 6, he said at the Dalchand meeting - "Agar kissi galat tatv ke aadmi ne, kisi Hindu pe haath uthaya ya hinduon ke upar yeh samajh key ki yeh kamzor hain, unke peeche koi nahi hai... hinduon ke upar haath uthaya, mein geeta ki kasam khake kehta hoon ki mein uss haath ko kaat daaloonga. (If somebody lifts a hand against Hindus, or thinks they are weak, there is nobody behind them, then I swear on the (Bhagvad) Gita that I will cut off that hand)".

It has left even leaders who are working for his victory flabbergasted.

"I am a BJP activist and a Hindu too. But I am not in favour of launching a communally charged campaign. If Varun Gandhi persists with such style of campaigning, I would be compelled to keep myself away from it," a popular BJP leader in Puranpur, Naresh Verma told IANS.

"Varun is going out of hand. If he is not restrained, this election could end in a bloody communal clash," added another BJP veteran Gurdial Singh.

The 70-year-old Sikh from Ramnagar village was even asked to leave one of the Hindu meets being addressed by Varun.

"He neither has respect for any other religion nor even for elders. In his arrogance, he has gone to the extent of forgetting that his mother was also a Sikh before her marriage," Gurudial said.

If the BJP is alarmed, other parties are determined to ensure that this stops.

"We have audio-recordings of the provocative language used by Varun Gandhi to run down Muslims," claimed a local Samajwadi Party leader, Haroon Ahmad.

"We have been restraining our people from retaliating because that will lead to a clash, but how long can we stop people from reacting?" he asked.

Varun's Congress rival VM Singh said he was "going to make a detailed complaint in this regard to the Election Commission".

"I have been gathering all the evidence against him so far but now I am going to make a written complaint," Singh added.

"The highly objectionable slang used by Varun in his reference to Muslims could just spark off a violent communal clash here."
