Amritsar, November 14 - Despite the fact that Brahmins made a significant contribution during the times of Sikh Gurus, their role has not been highlighted so far. Out of 35 authors whose writings have been incorporated in Guru Granth Sahib, 16 were Brahmins, making their contribution 45 percent. The Bhatt Brahmins sang and wrote in the praise of Sikh Gurus and 11 of them had even laid down their lives for the cause of Sikhism during the lifetime of Sikh Gurus. They were bestowed with the honour of preacher (Manjis) by the Gurus.

This is the crux of the research, "Brahmin Bhala Aakhiye", conducted by Iqbal Singh, senior superintendent of police, Amritsar (rural). He has quoted hymns from Guru Granth Sahib to substantiate his viewpoint on the subject. The research is a collection of information about the Brahmins who hail from far-off places like Jagannath, Kashi, Gaya, Brindaban, Kurukshetra, Lahore, Jhelum, Kashmir, Gorakhpur, Jodhour and Gwalior, and their contribution towards the Bhakti movement.

Cop-turned-scholar Iqbal Singh, in his research, says Sikh Gurus had a great respect for the capabilities of Brahmins who were entrusted with important assignments on the basis of their abilities and deep commitment towards society. In view of their Brahmanical background, they could fully understand and interpret the Gurmat for the common man, he adds.

The SSP in the past also has tried to depict the positive role of Muslims through his book, "Musalman Kahawan Muskal". He has so far contributed five books on the Sikh history and philosophy, besides writing a large number of articles in newspapers.

The officer, who had earned appreciation from the then DGPs, including K.P.S. Gill, for providing confidential reports which led to seizures of arms and ammunition besides elimination of terrorists, has provided pioneer information to researchers of Gurbani.

Lauding the efforts of Iqbal Singh for bringing out the various facets associated with the contribution of the Brahmins in Guru Granth Sahib, former jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti said Sikh researchers should further dwell on the subject to project the role played by them. He said the coming generation should be made aware about the help provided by the Brahmins in compiling the holy book.

The former Governor of Nagaland, O.P. Sharma, in the preface of the research work, while appreciating the hard work done by Iqbal Singh, said that it was a challenging assignment that had been brilliantly researched by him.

By their actions, protesters were forcing the guests to drive over the flag, walk over the flag, trample the Indian national flag, he said

Police: Victim in Sikh temple shooting diesQUOTEVIENNA â Sikhs wielding knives and a handgun attacked two preachers at a rival temple in Vienna in a brawl that left one of the victims dead Monday and at least 15 others wounded, police said. A related clash later broke out in northern India.

Witnesses said a group of bearded and turbaned men attacked the religious leaders at the temple in Austria's capital on Sunday and their followers moved to defend them.

The preachers were among the six people who suffered serious wounds and were identified by Indian diplomats and police as Niranjan Das and Sant Rama Nand.

Both were initially described as in satisfactory condition after operations for gunshot wounds. But a police official who declined to identify himself on the telephone, in line with Austrian custom, said early Monday that the condition of Nand, 57 subsequently worsened and he died shortly after midnight.

Police spokesman Michael Takacs earlier said the scene was "like a battlefield." Six suspects were in custody with more arrests possible, he said.

Mohnder Ram, a worshipper who said he had lived in Vienna for decades and attended services at the temple every Sunday, said it is run by followers of Shri Guru Ravidas, a 14th-century founder of a Sikh sect called Dera Sach Khand.

In India, fighting between mainstream Sikhs and followers of the guru broke out in the northern city of Jalandhar several hours after the Vienna clash, in what locals there described as an apparent reaction to the melee in the Austrian capital. Sanjiv Kalra, a senior police official at Jalandhar, said that protesters had set fire to a number of vehicles and erected several roadblocks across the city. He gave no other details.

Witnesses in Vienna spoke of chaos.

"Everybody was praying and then it started with knives and a pistol," said Nermal Singh, barefooted, his shirt bloodied and his head bandaged from what he said was a knife wound.

Ram, 72, said, "I heard four to five shots" in the temple. "People started screaming, children were crying as they ran out.

"It was like war. There was lots of blood everywhere."

Ram also spoke of "blood everywhere," adding: "People were hit and stabbed with knives."

Bimla Lalka, who lives in a ground-floor apartment opposite the building housing the temple, said she saw seven or eight men with lengthy beards and dark blue and orange turbans fleeing the building.

It was not clear whether some of the weapons used were kirpans, the ceremonial daggers carried by Sikhs. Police said kirpans may legally be worn by Sikhs in Austria.

Takacs, the police spokesman, said of the six people in serious condition, four were "definitely perpetrators." The most serious wounds were caused by gunshots to the abdomen and head.

The possibility that not only the attackers but also some of the worshippers were armed was being investigated, said Takacs. He denied reports that temple leaders had asked in vain for police protection after telephone threats last week, saying no such requests were received.

Bernhard Segall of Vienna medical services said that one of the more seriously wounded had to be resuscitated several times at the scene. He described those hurt as of Indian origin and between 30 and 50 years old.

Witnesses said the perpetrators were fundamentalist Sikhs from a higher caste, who accused one or both of the preachers of being disrespectful of the Holy Book. Indian news reports said the attackers were incensed that one of the preachers was given a ceremonial shawl considered a high Sikh honor.

Ram said about 400 people were at the service when the fight broke out in the temple, in a residential building of the working-class Viennese neighborhood. Police put the number at between 150 and 300.

Four ambulances and three medical helicopters transported the victims to hospitals.

The temple is situated in Vienna-Rudolfsheim, the capital's 15th district near Westbahnhof, one of Vienna's main train stations. Police cordoned off the area.

The Dera Sach Khand sect comprises mostly Sikhs belonging to the lower Dalit caste.

There are several such Deras across the northern state of Punjab. While there are disagreements between the Deras and Sikh religious authorities, violent clashes are rare.

Punjab tense after night of violence, Army called inQUOTETowns in Punjab remained tense on Monday morning after a night of violence on Sunday by members of a Dalit Sikh sect protesting a clash in a gurudwara in Austria's capital Vienna.

District authorities in Jalandhar, which saw the maximum violence, requisitioned the army and the Border Security Force (BSF) late Sunday night even as the Punjab Police was out on the streets in full force to control the rampaging mobs belonging to the Sachh Khand sect, followers of Guru Ravi Dass Sabha.

The entire Doaba belt (the area between rivers Sutlej and Beas) comprising Jalandhar, Phagwara, Nawanshahr and Hoshiarpur towns were tense throughout the night. Jalandhar and Phagwara were the worst hit areas. Unrest was also reported from the industrial city of Ludhiana, 60 km from Jalandhar. 

Although no one was injured in the clashes, scores of public and private vehicles were set ablaze by the protestors in Jalandhar and Phagwara. A State Bank of India ATM was also set ablaze in Jalandhar.

Many people were stranded on the roads after the violence broke out.

Curfew has been imposed in Jalandhar, which continued Monday morning, even though the police claimed the situation was brought under control.

"The situation turned bad and we have requisitioned the army, BSF and the Punjab Armed Police units to control the situation," said Sanjiv Kalra, inspector general of police (IG), Jalandhar range.

The protestors also clashed with the police at some places in Jalandhar. The protestors blocked roads and highways around Jalandhar and in the nearby industrial town of Phagwara.

"It is a very serious situation. Curfew has been imposed in Jalandhar City following the violence. Road and rail traffic has been affected," Kalra told IANS.

Railway traffic through Jalandhar, including the New Delhi-Amritsar Shatabdi train, was affected as protestors blocked rail tracks.

Curfew in Jalandhar after attack on Dera chief in Vienna

Six buses were damaged in stone-pelting in Phagwara and Adampur, near Jalandhar, and a truck torched while traffic was blocked on a National Highway no One. An ATM of a bank was also set on fire.

Police said curfew was clamped in Jalandhar town as a precautionary measure and Army has been alerted.

The Jalandhar cantonment station was attacked by protestors who targeted a EMU train and a passenger train, police said, adding, two express trains including an Amritsar-bound Shatabdi was stranded at the station in Jalandhar after protestors gathered there in large numbers.

Tension gripped Jalandhar when followers of Dera Sachkhand and various Dalit bodies took to the streets after the news of firing on Sant Niranjan Dass, the Dera head, in the Austrian capital spread. The Dera was established by Sant Sarwan Dass and Sant Niranjan Dass is the current incumbent (Gadi Nasheen).

Activists of various Dalit bodies, including Ambedkar Sena and BSP, blocked vehicular traffic in Phagwara for nearly an hour on National Highway No 1 on the over-bridge near Sugar Mill crossing to protest the Vienna incident, police said.

Some of the protesters pelted stones at vehicles, damaging three buses, they said, adding no passenger was injured in the incident. Three buses were attacked in Adampur.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son and deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal appealed to all Punjabis to maintain calm.

Protesters also gave a call for Phagwara bandh on Monday.

In Buta Mandi locality in Phagwara, followers of the sect torched a truck parked in the area, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police RK Jaiswal said policemen have been deployed at sensitive points to check any untoward incident. Hundreds of the Dera followers have also assembled at the Dera premises at Ballan village.

At least 11 people were injured, nine of them seriously when two groups of Sikh worshippers clashed with knives and handgun at a gurdwara in Vienna on Sunday, Vienna police said.

The fight erupted following a dispute over the sermon given by a priest from Shri Guru Ravidas Sabha.

At least six men, one wielding a gun and the others knives, attacked the preacher and others.

This is caste war between Sikhs. Hindus also joined Sikh lower caste for rioting.

While sources among Ravidass followers claim that the attackers came from Germany and France, Austria-based Sikhs told Hindustan Times that all the six assailants were from Spain and had been tracking the present Dera head, Sant Niranjan Dass, and his deputy, Sant Rama Nand, for quite some time.

Chief of the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), Vadhawa Singh, even blamed Indian intelligence agencies for the incident. He said the Indian establishment wanted to create a divide between the Sikhs and the followers of Sant Ravidass.

But a close associate of Sant Niranjan Dass said, âAbout four years back, Sikh radicals wrote a letter instructing Sant Niranjan Dass to adhere to the rehat maryada (code of Sikh religious conduct) or face the consequences.â

Sikh hardliners have been objecting to the Sachkhand devoteesâ practice at gurdwaras to touch the feet of Sant Niranjan Dass in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib â which, according to the code, is supreme and none can be given prominence in its presence.

But Mahi, vice-president of the Vienna gurdwara, told Hindustan Times from Vienna that Sikh radicals have been nursing a grudge against Ravidass followers for a long time, as their hefty donations were no longer going to the Sikh orthodox gurdwaras.

Besides, the radicals are not comfortable with the opening of Ravidass gurdwaras worldwide, a move initiated by Sant Niranjan Dass a decade ago. The move was not only a potential threat to the supremacy of the orthodox Sikhs, but also resulted in the decline in their income.

Since the Vienna Ravidass gurdwara was set up in 1999, Sachkhand devotees stopped holding marriages, rituals and religious meetings at the Sikh gurdwara.

Similar Ravidass gurdwaras have been established in the European Union, the United States and Canada.

Mahi, an eyewitness to Vienna shootout, said, âEarlier, Ravidass followers used to do menial jobs for Sikhs in the villages of Punjab. But now we have earned social status and money to compete with them. The attack was outcome of sheer jealousy.â

Anyway all this shows that the situation has come full circle, the khalistani types are always fond of citing that story of Guru Nanak having meat at Kurukshetra as a revolt against silly superstitions, well today you have the same situation repeating itself in the Har Mandir only to be declared "blasphemous".

They have reduced everything to externalities, & Jattism.

As for those EU assholes, they won't say anything about the hordes of insane missionaries they keep sending to India & other developing nations, they need to be told to stfu & sit down.

Punjab had changed lot, drugs and Alcohol is destroying youth. They are less religious more empty fanatics.
In Fremont, US, Gurdawara they are still displaying Bhinderwala's images in Langar House. In Bay area, Police in full gear always stand outside Gurdwara during Basakhi or other festivals. In Berkeley Gurdawara shooting, Sikhs were on rampage, I think 5-6 people died in shooting.
Same I have seen Leeds, UK, Southhall, UK and Belgium. In Slough, UK they disrupted wedding because bride family brought Guru Granth Sahib in Wedding Hall. It was a big brawl. Reception was cancelled.

Was the fight inside a Sikh gurdwara?

The fight was inside a Guru Ravidass temple in Vienna and not a Sikh gurdwara. Although Ravidass temples house Sikh holy book, Guru Granth Sahib, their identity lies in the Ravidassia ideology, and with followers of Guru Ravidass, a Dalit saint of the 14th century Bhakti movement of India.
