some of the credit. Thanks to the samitiâs initiative, well over one lakh students across the state have signed a pledge, promising that they will either not burst firecrackers or drastically cut expenditure on them.
The 'Cracker-free Diwali campaign' was launched nearly two months ago, with samiti activists personally visiting over 500 schools in 16 districts, including Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik, Latur and Aurangabad, to expound on the ill-effects of firecrackers to students. "We told them that crackers cause tremendous air and noise pollution, trouble animals and senior citizens, and result in fatal accidents. Above all, we impressed upon them the fact that these crackers are manufactured by child labourers in the age group of five to 15," Samiti chairman Narendra Dabholkar told TOI.
The activists were "overwhelmed" by the students' response.

schemes on SMS charges during Diwali.
Togadia, in the notice sent through advocate Deepak Shukla, said "the Hindu customers who have bought services of mobile companies based on their advertisements and offers on cheaper or free SMSs are being cheated this way on Diwali."
He said though the service providers have informed their customers that no special schemes related to free or cheaper SMS will be applicable during festivals like Diwali, he claimed they were never informed at the time of buying their services.
He has also sent a copy of the notice to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) appealing to them to immediately take notice of the issue.

Hereby Antony has asked Gen Kapoor to review his decision of recommending only administrative action on Lt Gen Parkash in sucna land scam.
Gen Kapoor is the 1st chief of Army who has raised the stakes higher for COAS as his statement on international security especially related to Pak was first answered by Pak PM though later on he ducked and let his Generals do the talk.
And come to think of it, Antony collapsed while taking salute on the passing out parade of IMA last year. <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/angry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Chavan SRKââ¬â¢s bodyguard: Thackeray
MUMBAI: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Saturday accused Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan of behaving like the bodyguard of actor Shah Rukh Khan.
ââ¬Ëââ¬ËThe CM should stand outside ââ¬ËMannatââ¬â¢ (SRKââ¬â¢s house) and protect the actor,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Thackeray wrote in ââ¬ËSaamnaââ¬â¢, the Sena mouthpiece.
Thackeray was angry with Chavan for allowing the police to act tough with Sainiks protesting against MNIK.
Thackeray, however, spared home minister RR Patil, who had personally monitored the police bandobast.
Patil had watched the film at a Mumbai theatre on Friday to send a strong message to Sena.

Strangely, the crow does not target Ravishankarââ¬â¢s family members or his friends. ââ¬ÅWhen he joined us for his morning walk, the crow would attack only Ravi and not any of us. Now Ravi has given up his morning walk as well,ââ¬Â said Manoharan, his neighbour in the Sungam area of Coimbatore. <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />
Since he cannot be confined to his home, Ravishankar has adopted some protective measures. He wears a full-face helmet, carries a walking stick and even a couple of Diwali guns that fire cap rolls to protect himself and scare away the bird.
But nothing has deterred the crow, which comes swooping down and crackling on spotting Ravishankar. So whenever he needs to go out, he travels by vehicles that drive right up to his front door. http://www.telegraphindia.com/1101215/js...303190.jsp
