WASHINGTON: A group of Muslim women have risked arrest as they sought to pray in the main area of the Islamic Centre of Washington -- an area ordinarily reserved exclusively for men.



"Wooden barriers have to be taken down and women have to be allowed to join, to pray behind the men in the main praying area. That's our request," said Fatima Thompson, an American Muslim who converted to the faith 18 years ago.



"We are against gender segregation, against the fact that women are put aside or in a totally different room at the mosque," added Thompson, who led the group of female protestors, all self-identified progressive Muslims.



The yesterday protest was the second time women have sought to share the main prayer area at the mosque in Washington DC, after a group of 20 women first tried in February.



"The general issue we are pushing is gender segregation and the ramifications it fosters. It's not healthy, and not reflective of our society here. It's very reflective of very restrictive, ultra orthodox societies," Thompson added.



Their hair covered with headscarves, the group of six women entered the mosque's prayer area via the main door usually reserved for men and walked through to the room where around 20 men had already arrived. Women and children ordinarily enter the Washington mosque, located in the city's embassy district, through a small door hidden behind a screen.

JOS, Nigeria (AFP) – Nigeria's government sent in troops to the flashpoint northern Jos region Monday after attacks by machete-wielding gangs on Christian villages that officials say killed at least 500 people.



Under fire for failing to prevent another outburst of sectarian violence only weeks after hundreds died in Muslim-Christian clashes, authorities said they had arrested scores of people in connection with the attacks.



Witnesses meanwhile described how the mainly women and children victims in Sunday's three-hour systematic orgy of violence were caught in animal traps and fishing nets as they tried to flee their attackers, who hacked them to death.



[color="#0000FF"]The official death toll was initially put at a little over 100 but Dan Manjang, an advisor to the Plateau state government, said the toll had now been raised substantially.[/color]



"We have been able to make 95 arrests but at the same time over 500 people have been killed in this heinous act," Dan Manjang said in a telephone interview.



Government-run radio also reported that 500 people had been slaughtered in a night raid on three villages on the fringes of Jos, capital of Plateau state.



Witnesses and local rights activists put the figure at more than 200.



"By our latest count there are 202 bodies," said Shamaki Gad Peter, head of the League for Human Rights in Jos.



Shehu Sani, another leading rights activist, spoke of 250 people having been killed.



Much of the violence was centred around the village of Dogo Nahawa where gangs from the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic group set fire to straw-thatched mud huts before embarking on the killing rampage in the early hours of Sunday.



Frank Tatgun, a resident of Dogo Nahawa, said that he had seen two armoured vehicles and three military trucks arrive in the village and scores of troops were now on patrol.



He reported no new clashes overnight amid the tightened security.



[color="#0000FF"]Locals said that the attacks on Sunday were the result of a spiralling feud between the Fulani and the rival Berom clan which had been first ignited by a theft of cattle and then further fuelled by a deadly revenge attack.[/color]

Witnesses said that armed gangs had scared the victims out of their homes by firing into the air but most of the killings were as a result of machete attacks. Those killed were mainly women and children.[/color]



"Gunshots were fired just to scare people out of their houses only to be macheted as they fled into the bush," Peter Gyang, who lost his wife and two children, told reporters in Dogo Nahawa.



A curfew which was imposed after January's violence was supposed to be still in place but Gyang said that the authorities had done nothing to prevent the bloodshed.



"The operation started around 3:00 am (0200 GMT) and lasted till 6:00 am and there were gunshots, but we did not see a single policeman.



"We no longer have confidence in the security agencies," added Gyang.

At least 500 people were killed Sunday in communal clashes near Nigeria's central city of Jos, a state governor's advisor told AFP Monday, revising a previous toll of around 100 dead.



"We have been able to make 95 arrests but at the same time over 500 people have been killed in this heinous act... by Fulani herdsmen," Dan Manjang said in a telephone interview.



Earlier the country's acting president put security forces on alert after machete wielding gangs carried out the massacre close to the city, officials said.



Witnesses described how victims were caught in animal traps and fishing nets as they tried to flee their attackers, who hacked them to death in what appeared to have been a well-organised attack.



Much of the violence in the early hours of Sunday was centred around the village of Dogo Nahawa, near the Jos, where a journalist counted a total of 103 bodies amid the smouldering embers.



But the raiders also set fire to dozens of houses in the nearby villages of Ratsat and Zot, all less than 10 kilometres (seven miles) from Jos and home to members of the Berom ethnic group.



"These villages were attacked by Fulani herdsmen killing scores of people and burning houses," Ratsat resident David Daniel Daniel told AFP.



Other residents and local rights activists also blamed the attacks on the Fulani ethnic group.



[color="#0000FF"]In Jos, Yusuf Alkali, a member of the Fulani ethic group, said he believed the attacks were a reprisal for the killings of four herdsmen two weeks ago when a Fulani settlement was attacked by ethnic Berom youths.[/color]

"He has also directed that the security services undertake strategic initiatives to confront and defeat these roving bands of killers," it added.



Dan Manjang, an advisor to the Plateau state government confirmed that troops had been deployed to the area.



But traumatised residents accused local officials of having turned a blind eye to the bloodshed.



"The operation started around 3:00 am (0200 GMT) and lasted till 6:00 am and there were gunshots, but we did not see a single policeman," Peter Gyang, who lost his wife and two children, told reporters in Dogo Nahawa.



"We no longer have confidence in the security agencies."

Parts of Jos and its environs are still under a dusk-to-dawn curfew since the January religious clashes.



This central region of Nigeria had been a regular ethnic and religious flashpoint.

There is a long history of local tension between Muslims and Christians.



The attacks are said to have been in revenge for the killing of several hundred people around Jos in January.



Although sectarianism is blamed for such clashes, correspondents say poverty and access to resources such as land often lie at the root of the violence.

The AFP news agency reports that troops and military vehicles have entered the villages, which are now said to be calm.



An adviser to the Christian-dominated Plateau state government, Dan Manjang, told AFP: "We have been able to make 95 arrests but at the same time over 500 people have been killed in this heinous act."



Another Plateau state official, Gregory Yenlong, urged people to "remain calm and be patient as the government steps up security to protect lives and property in this state".



Many of the dead in the villages of Zot and Dogo-Nahawa are reported to be women and children.



Mark Lipdo, from the Christian charity Stefanus Foundation, said the village of Zot had been almost wiped out.

Some witnesses said villagers were caught in fishing nets and animal traps as they tried to escape and were then hacked to death. Mud huts were also set on fire.



Scores of bodies have been laid out in the streets of the three attacked villages, awaiting mass burials on Monday.

The Nigerian army took over the stricken city of Jos on Sunday to enforce calm after two days of Muslim-Christian clashes that left hundreds dead.

"The situation this morning is gradually returning to normal. There have not been any cases this morning of any destruction or violence," Brigadier Emeka Onwamaegbu said.



Residents reported troops patrolling the streets and calm returning to the city. Offering the first official toll, Plateau State's information minister Nuhu Gagara said about 200 people died during fighting on Friday and Saturday between the rival communities over the results of a local election in the state capital.



Other sources have given a toll twice the official figure.



"This figure is just preliminary, as a search and rescue committee has been inaugurated by the government to go around the city and recover dead bodies," Mr Gagara told reporters. He did not give a figure for the injured.



Police arrested 500 people on Saturday alone, carrying "all sorts of lethal weapons," he said.



A Plateau State government spokesman was quoted in newspapers as saying that 1,500 youths had been arrested over the two days in connection with the violence.



Jos was under tight police and army surveillance on Sunday, military spokesman Onwamaegbu said, while declining to say how many troops had been deployed in the city.



"There have been no reports of violence this morning, the army has taken over the capital but the only fear is what might happen at the outskirts of the town," Muslim cleric Adamu Tsoho said.



Relief workers and observers offered markedly higher death tolls than the government's preliminary estimates.



[color="#0000FF"]"Well over 300 people have been killed in the last two days of violence," one Nigerian Red Cross official told AFP, asking to remain anonymous.



Khaled Abubakar, an imam from the central mosque in Jos said Saturday that "close on 400 bodies" had been laid out in the mosque.



"Muslim prayers were observed on 351 dead bodies at the central mosque and then taken to the cemetery where they are being buried," Tsoho, the other cleric, said.



Another 30 bodies had been removed from the mosque Saturday night by relatives and had been buried.



Earlier that day a local journalist said he counted 381 bodies in the mosque.[/color]

Trouble began on Sunday when militants attacked a police station in the northern city of Bauchi, leaving dozens dead in gunbattles with police.



Armed fundamentalists staged further shootouts with security forces on Monday, setting alight two police stations, a church and a customs building in three towns in the country's majority Muslim north.



A BBC reporter counted 100 bodies in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state, where police were still fighting militants late on Monday night.



Nigeria has been sporadically wracked by sectarian clashes since 12 of the country's 36 states began adopting Islamic law, or Sharia, in the north in 1999.



[color="#0000FF"]This week's co-ordinated attacks were carried out by a hardline Islamist group of former students calling itself Boko Haram, loosely translated as "education is sin", which models itself on the Taliban.[/color]

The organisation has very little support among Nigeria's 65 million mainstream Muslims, who make up about half of the population.



Mr Yusuf and his followers have been barred from neighbourhood mosques.

A Foreign Office spokesman said that travel advice approving visits to northern Nigeria had not changed.

Around 70 fighters from the fundamentalist group armed with guns and grenades attacked a police station in Nigeria's northern Bauchi state early on Sunday, but retreated after officers opened fire.



"Our men succeeded in repelling the dawn attack by the Taliban," Mohammed Barau, Bauchi state police spokesman, told AFP, adding that it appeared the assailants "wanted to steal weapons from the police station".



"We have launched a manhunt for other members of the group that have fled," Mr Barau added.



Hospital sources and witnesses said more than 50 people were killd in the fighting. Police arrested up to 200 people living close to the targeted police station.



The Nigerian Taliban is inspired by the Afghan militia but has no known direct connection.

A member of the gang who was wounded during the initial attack on the police station told Reuters the group wanted to "clean the (Nigerian) system which is polluted by Western education and uphold sharia all over the country."



"The police has been [sic] arresting our leaders that is why we decided to retaliate," said the man, who gave his name only as Abdullah.



The north of the country is majority Muslim, and has progressively ushered in a stricter enforcement of Islamic law since 2000.

The screening of Geert Wilders’ controversial anti-Islam film in the U.K. Sunday outraged Muslims and rights organizations earning the far-right Dutch MP the labels "fascist" and "racist."



The film, called Fitna, was screened at the House of Lords in response to an invitation Wilders got on March 5 from Lord Malcolm Pearson, leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) and member of the House of Lords, and Baroness Caroline Anne Cox, cross-bench member of the House of Lords.





" I believe that this man, Wilders, from Holland is a racist hater of Muslims, hater of Islam, and he shouldn't be allowed into our country to whip up that hatred " British MP George Galloway.



Wilders' trip to the U.K. is part of the Stop Islamization Of Europe (SIOE) campaign. SIOE is an organization whose goal is to prevent Islam from becoming a substantial political force in Europe. Wilders' visit is supported by the far-right English Defense League (EDL).



The film, which declares Islam is incompatible with democracy and calls the Quran a fascist book, was scheduled for screening in the U.K. in 2009. However, Wilders was denied entry to the country. He was accused of inciting hatred and designated a persona non grata. The ban was overturned in October 2009, a moved that Wilders called a “victory for freedom.”



British rights groups slammed the visit and submitted a complaint to the Interior Minister, calling Wilders the Dutch version of the English Defence League (EDL), whose sole goal is to fight the presence of Islam in Europe, and the far-right British National Party (BNP), which restricts its membership to Caucasians only.



Protesters from Unite Against Fascism (UAF) waved signs that read "EDL+BNP= Nazi racist thugs" and chanted "EDL, go to hell, and take your Nazi mates as well." The police made sure to keep UAF protestors away from ADL supporters who carried signs welcoming Wilders.



Meanwhile, Muslims inside and outside the U.K. continued their campaign against what they perceive as systematic and intentional insults directed against their religion, their holy book, and their prophet.



The campaigns, which are mostly launched on the internet and call for boycotting countries that insult Islam, cite Wilders' movie, the Danish cartoons, and Theo Van Gough's movie Submission as just a few, yet flagrant, examples European insults to Islam..



However, online campaigns also indicate that Muslims are losing hope as they no longer trust that serious political action will be taken to stop spread of Islamophobia in Europe.



The ban on Wilders’ film last year was not only praised by Muslims, but also by British officials who view the MP as a fanatic extremist intent on inciting intolerance in Europe.



British MP George Galloway expressed his support for the British government's decision to ban Wilders from the U.K.



"I believe that this man, Wilders, from Holland is a racist hater of Muslims, hater of Islam, and he shouldn't be allowed into our country to whip up that hatred," Galloway said in a T.V. interview.

THERE'S broad Muslim community support for aspects of Sharia law being adopted in Australia, a leading spokesman for the religion says.



However, harsh penal aspects of the law, including stoning and chopping off hands, will never work and aren't being called for, Islamic Friendship Association of Australia president Keysar Trad says.



But personal aspects of the law, particularly those involving marriage and inheritance, would be broadly supported and would offer great help to ordinary Australian Muslims, he said.



Mr Trad's remarks come after Dr Zachariah Matthews, president of the Australian Islamic Mission, made a similar call, saying aspects of Sharia law could run parallel to existing legislation.



Dr Matthews was speaking during an open day at Lakemba Mosque in Sydney on Saturday.



Some non-Muslims in the audience were reportedly left shocked by the speech.



"Most people seem to think that when it comes to Sharia law it's just about the penal provisions, but that's not that case," Mr Trad said.



"(The penal provisions) can't work here. No serious person would advocate them."



But he said adopting aspects of Sharia marital and inheritance law - in a dual legal system - would be an advantage, particularly for women.



"At the moment it can disadvantage Muslims here, particularly women, because if a woman gets divorced through the normal civil process that divorce is not recognised in Muslim countries," Mr Trad said.



"So they would still be considered to be married elsewhere."



Equally, Australian governments don't recognise divorce documents made by imams, the mosque and community leaders, Mr Trad said.



"These are all considerations that Muslims living in Australia face all the time and a lot of them support introducing these parts of Sharia law here," he added.



Dr Matthews also said he was not proposing the introduction of wider Sharia law.



"I don't think we are so unsophisticated that we cannot consider a multilayered legal system as long as it doesn't conflict with the existing civil system," he was quoted as saying by Fairfax.



There are about 340,000 Muslims in Australia, or 1.7 per cent of the population, Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show.

Stockholm: The point of a caricature depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a dog was to show that artistic freedom allows mockery of all religions, including the most sacred symbols of Islam, the Swedish artist who created it said on Wednesday.







Lars Vilks - the target of an alleged murder plot involving an American woman who dubbed herself "Jihad Jane" – said he has no regrets about the drawing, which is considered deeply offensive by many Muslims.



"I'm actually not interested in offending the prophet. The point is actually to show that you can," Vilks said in an interview in Stockholm. "There is nothing so holy you can't offend it."



Vilks made his rough sketch showing Muhammad's head on a dog's body more than a year after 12 Danish newspaper cartoons of the prophet sparked furious protests in Muslim countries in 2006.



Islamic law generally opposes any depiction of the prophet, even favourable, for fear it could lead to idolatry.



Vilks submitted the drawing to an exhibit at a Swedish cultural heritage centre, which turned it down, citing security concerns. The issue went largely unnoticed until a Swedish newspaper printed the drawing with an editorial defending the freedom of expression.



The publication led to protests from Muslim countries, and briefly revived a heated debate in the West and the Muslim world about religious sensitivities and the limits of free speech.



It also led to numerous death threats against Vilks, who was temporarily moved to a secret location after al Qaeda in Iraq put a USD 100,000 bounty on his head in September 2007.



The 63-year-old artist said he has now built his own defence system, including a "homemade" safe room and a barbed-wire sculpture that could electrocute potential intruders. He also has an axe "to chop down" anyone trying to climb through the windows of his home, in southern Sweden.



"If something happens, I know exactly what to do," Vilks said.



He said he believes the suspects in the latest alleged plot to kill him — seven people arrested in Ireland and a Pennsylvania woman held in the US — were not professionals but "rather low-tech”.



He said he had learned from American media reports that Colleen R LaRose, who called herself JihadJane in a YouTube video, had visited the area where he lives, but he didn't know whether that was correct. "I'm glad she didn't kill me," Vilks said, with a half-smile.



Nalin Pekgul, a moderate Muslim and high-ranking member of Sweden's opposition Social Democratic Party, told Swedish Radio the threats against Vilks were unacceptable but added his drawing had profoundly hurt Muslims.



"A dog is unclean. To describe Muhammad as a dog is like saying you are unclean" to Muslims, said Pekgul, a Kurdish immigrant from Turkey.



An eccentric man with dishevelled gray hair and thick-lensed glasses, Vilks referred to himself as "the artist" and described his life as a movie plot.



"It's a good story. It's about the bad guys and a good guy, and they try to kill him," he said.

Curfew relaxed in violence-hit Bareilly



Bareilly, Mar 16 (PTI) With situation limping towards normalcy in trouble-hit areas, curfew was today again relaxed as no untoward incident was reported from any part of the city, officials said here.



"With situation returning to normal, curfew in five police areas - Prem Nagar, Qila, Baradari, Kotwali and Subhash Nagar - has been relaxed this morning again for eight hours, from 6 AM to 2 PM," they said.



However, sources said that the curfew has been relaxed conditionally and certain restrictions have been imposed as a preventive measure.



The administration has decided not to allow fairs, organised on the occasion of navratri festival, sources said.

Only a small number of women working at the hospital wear the full-face veil, he said.

TIRUNELVELI: The 62nd Community Renaissance Conference of Indian Union Muslim League has urged the Tamil Nadu Government to release the Muslim prisoners, who have served ten years of imprisonment after being sentenced to life term in the Coimbatore serial blast case.



One of the resolutions passed in the conference at Melapalayam on Wednesday said a total of 1,500 life convicts were released recently in connection with the Anna birth centenary celebration. In view of the World Classic Tamil Conference to be conducted at Coimbatore, the Tamil Nadu Government should release 51 Muslim life convicts, including 18 persons who were awarded life term in the Coimbatore serial blast case since they had already served 10 years behind the bars.



Another resolution complained that the police are not giving ‘no objection certificates' to the Muslim youths from Melapalayam, who have applied for passports with the goal of securing a job in the foreign countries. Hence the State Government should weed out the hurdles in the process and the Central Government should ensure the early dispatch of the same to the applicants.



The United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre should implement the recommendations of Justice Ranganath Misra Committee that had advocated in favour of giving 10 per cent reservation for Muslims in education and employment opportunities.



Besides expediting the completion of the four-laning of Palayamkottai – Tuticorin National Highway, the Union Government should expand the Tuticorin airport so that it can handle wide-bodied aircrafts with higher passenger capacity, another resolution appealed.



Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers M.K. Alagiri said Muslims, who were supporting Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, ever since he entered politics, should back him in future also as he was according highest priority for their welfare.



“I've come all the way to Melapalayam to participate in the IUML conference because you always love and support the Chief Minister,” Mr. Alagiri noted.



The Union Minister released IUML's bi-weekly magazine.

PARIS: Prominent Muslim scholars have recast a famous medieval fatwa on jihad, arguing the religious edict extremists often cite to justify killing cannot be used in a globalised world that respects faith and civil rights.



A conference in Mardin in southeastern Turkey declared the fatwa by 14th century scholar Ibn Taymiyya rules out militant violence and the medieval Muslim division of the world into a “house of Islam” and “house of unbelief” no longer applies.



Justification: Osama Bin Laden has quoted Ibn Taymiyya’s “Mardin fatwa” repeatedly in his calls for Muslims to overthrow the Saudi monarchy and wage jihad against the United States.



Referring to that historic document, the weekend conference said, “Anyone who seeks support from this fatwa for killing Muslims or non-Muslims has erred in his interpretation.”



“It is not for a Muslim individual or a Muslim group to announce and declare war or engage in combative jihad ... on their own,” said the

declaration issued on Sunday in Arabic and later provided to Reuters in English.



Latest bid: The declaration is the latest bid by mainstream scholars to use age-old Muslim texts to refute current-day religious arguments by extremist groups. A leading Pakistani scholar issued a 600-page fatwa against terrorism in London early this month.



Another declaration in Dubai this month concerned peace in Somalia. Such fatwas may not convince militants, but could help keep undecided Muslims from supporting them, the scholars say.



The Mardin conference gathered 15 leading scholars from countries including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, India, Senegal, Kuwait, Iran, Morocco and Indonesia. Among them were Bosnian Grand Mufti Mustafa Ceric, Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah of Mauritania and Yemeni Sheikh Habib Ali al-Jifri.



Ibn Taymiyya’s Mardin fatwa is a classic text for militants who say it allows Muslims to declare other Muslims infidels and wage war on them. The scholars said this view had to be seen in its historic context of medieval Mongol raids on Muslim lands.



But the scholars said it was actually about overcoming the old view of a world divided into Muslim and non-Muslim spheres and reinterpreting Islam in changing political situations.



Aref Ali Nayed, a Libyan who heads the Dubai theological think-tank Kalam Research and Media, told the conference the great Muslim empires of the past were not a model for a globalised world where borders were increasingly irrelevant. “We must not be obsessed with an Islam conceived of only geographically and politically,” he said.



‘Muslim living’: “Living in the diaspora is often more conducive to healthy and sincere Muslim living. Empires and carved-out ‘Islamic states’ often make us complacent.”



Nayed said Muslims must also understand that “not all types of secularisms are anti-religious”. The US has stayed religious despite its separation of church and state, but some “French Revolution-like secularisms” were anti-religious.



The declaration ended with a call to Muslim scholars for more research to explain the context of medieval fatwas on public issues and show “what is hoped to be gained from a sound and correct understanding of their respective legacies”. reuters
