An Indian hawk in Indian Geo-political policy circle had indicated 12 tubes, when discussing A3/A3SL configurations. This was way before Arihant was unveiled. Recall that the article was written couple of years ago and my meeting with the analyst was prior to that (IOW quite soem time before the fllod gate of information that came with unavailing of Arihant.



It is ambivalent if he meant 12 smaller Sagarik's (K15) or Arihant or 12 on the bigger ATV in the pipeline.

NEW DELHI: The Navy is now going the whole hog against pirates daring to venture near Indian waters, in keeping with the new "proactive and aggressive measures" approved by the government. On Saturday, Indian warships sank yet another "pirate mother ship" around 400 nautical miles west of Lakshadweep Islands. With 16 pirates being nabbed in this latest operation in Arabian Sea, which also saw rescue of 12 Iranian and four Pakistani sailors held hostage, the total number of sea brigands apprehended by Navy has gone up to 120 over last two months. In the earlier three operations, the Navy had captured 104 pirates, who are now facing trial in Mumbai courts. The operation on Saturday began around 10am when a Tupolev-142M naval patrol aircraft spotted Morteza,an Iranian trawler being used as a "mother vessel’’ after being hijacked by pirates, who had earlier made abortive bids to attack two merchant vessels MSC Eva and MV Kensington on March 23 and March 26. "With the aircraft locating Morteza, with skiffs in tow, offshore patrol vessel INS Suvarna and Coast Guard ship Sangram were sent to intercept it. The warships made repeated attempts to communicate with Morteza but to no avail," said an official. "INS Suvarna even warned Morteza to stop but it tried to escape and fired at the warship. INS Suvarna then returned limited fire, which disabled Morteza. Soon afterwards, people were seen abandoning it," he added. The 16 pirates and 16 sailors were then picked up from the waters by the Indian warships. "All of them are being taken to Mumbai and will be handed over to police for further investigations,'' he said. As reported by TOI earlier, the CCS has cleared new "rules of engagement (RoE)'' and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Indian warships to take the battle to the pirates in a far more aggressive manner than before, which even includes storming of hijacked merchant vessels of Indian-origin.

India’s first indigenous nuclear submarine — the INS Arihant — that was scheduled to start final trial on Thursday — got off to an inauspicious start when four naval personnel were killed as it attempted to dock at Vishakhapatnam on Wednesday.



The incident happened around 11am, when the caisson (temporary docking gate) collapsed, killing two officers and two sailors. Commanders Ashwani Kumar, 47, and Ranbir Ranjan, 30, and sailors Madhu Babu, 31, and Rajesh, 30, suffered head injuries when the gate collapsed. They succumbed to their injuries later.



The navy has ordered a Board of Inquiry into the incident.



Naval constructors and technical personnel were working on the caisson, which is around 50-60 feet high, when it collapsed because the valves of the dry dock gate of the Ship Building Centre malfunctioned.



INS Arihant was launched in 2009 and was undergoing criticality certification tests before being put to sea. She was being readied to move out for other trials before being commissioned.



Last December, Naval chief, Admiral Nirmal Verma had said that the submarine would be operational for deterrence patrols by 2012, thereby adding one more leg to India’s nuclear capability. Once the submarine was operational India would have the capability to launch nuke missiles from land, air and sea.

INS Aridaman,



भारत बना रहा है दूसरी परमाणु पनडुब्बी INS अरिदमन

Ari-Daman is a Sanskrit composite word.



The meanings are:

Ari = enemy

Daman = suppress/destroy/squash/overwhelm



So Aridaman means "Destroyer of enemy"



Arihant resulted in some resentment from Jain believers, because it is one of the names of God.



IIRC Aridaman is also one of the many names of God in Indic Dharm.

After INS Arihant, India is now producing its second nuclear submarine, which is at an advanced stage and expected to be launched next year. Informed sources said India's second nuclear submarine named "INS Aridaman " will be its predecessor INS Arihant submarine's twin and its features, size and capabilities will be similar.



India inadvertently unveiled the second submarine in the shipyard in Visakhapatnam recently because of the accident at the shipyard. The accident killed four Navy personnel. When a section of the media published false reports that the accident would affect the sea trials of INS Arihant, some officials strongly denied that the incident happened while INS Arihant was in the dry dock.

These officials confirmed that the accident happened in the same docks used for Advanced Technology Vessel (the nuclear submarine project, codename), but at the time of the crash instead of Arihant there was another vessel.



It was later confirmed by other sources that the INS Arihant was moved for sea trials and the other vessel, being talked about, was in fact India's second nuclear submarine. Arihant INS was launched on July 26, 2008 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur. Traditionally, naval ships are launched by a woman.



Sources said the incident in the shipyard happened when one of the dock gates was being tested. Caisson, a French system which has three gates, was being set up for the first time in the shipyard. After putting two gates in place, the third gate was being installed there. The gate is forty feet high and about five - six feet wide and had naval officers and personnel standing on it. When the gate was wobbled, they fell into the dry dock. At the same time the sea water had to be left in the dry dock and the victims of this tragedy got a double hit leading to the loss of life.



Sources stressed that the incident will not affect the INS Arihant or any other sub building activity at the shipyard.

According to well placed sources, while work on Arihant, the first nuclear submarine that was launched in 2010, was going on as scheduled, construction of the hull and sub components of the remaining two submarines was also underway. Considerable experience has been built from the development of Arihant, and the successive two submarines would be considerably more potent with more power and punch.



I'm not sure of the 2nd boat, but the 3rd one certainly has a plug to accomodate more SLBM's. I guess the next batch of 3 subs (keeping in mind that 6 will be built and/or available) will be a new class. One just has to wait and see.

India has begun construction of its second nuclear submarine at a classified facility in Visakhapatnam.



Top sources told Deccan Chronicle that the keel of the project has been laid and the initial work is on full swing.



The project, launched just 24 months after the first nuclear submarine INS Arihant was commissioned - underlines the great strides the programme has made, sources said.



“The second programme took far lesser time than Arihant to reach the shipyard from the drawing board. This time we had a clear plan and we had learned a lot from our mistakes,” sources said.



Though exact details of the project's progress are not available, it is learnt that fabrication of the hull and body has begun. The reactor has been fabricated with the help of Russia.



The electronics and other systems are all indigenous. “Our DRDO laboratories have come up with inventions that are world class. We don't have to depend on anyone for sonars and such systems,” sources said.



The project is expected to be ready for sea trials by 2015. By that time India would have the Russian submarine on lease and INS Arihant deployed.



Sources, however, felt that the focus must also shift to surface vessels that need to be part of the flotilla that normally accompanies an Air Defence Ship.
