Identity crisis for ULFA kids

Disoriented and bewildered about their names, their religion and their identity, the children of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leaders arrested last week are still trying to come to terms with the reality of their lives and those of their fugitive fathers.

Guwahati, Dec 10 (IANS) Disoriented and bewildered about their names, their religion and their identity, the children of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leaders arrested last week are still trying to come to terms with the reality of their lives and those of their fugitive fathers.



Khamchen Bohagi and Gadadhar, the two children of outlawed ULFA chief Arabinda Rajkhowa, are surprised to see their father's handcuffed photographs and television images and are constantly asking their mother Kaveri what is wrong.



As far as Bohagi, 13, and Gadadhar, 5, know, their father is a businessman in Bangladesh and his name is Mizanur Rahman Choudhury.



The two children, now lodged at the 4th Assam Police Battalion headquarter guesthouse in Guwahati, did not know they are Assamese nor that their father is a separatist leader and one of India's most wanted fugitives until his arrest last week.



"Both the children speak only Bengali and were made to believe they were Muslims. Today both of them are confused and constantly prodding their mother about the developments," a senior intelligence official involved in the interrogation process told IANS.



Their mother Kaveri Kachari, 41, wife of Arabinda Rajkhowa, is at her wits end - still holding back from her two curious children the real identity of her husband and her own credentials as the head of ULFA's women wing.



Born in Bangladesh, the two children do not know their father was born as Rajib Rajkonwar and then became Arabinda Rajkhowa and later Mizanur Rahman Choudhury to carry out a violent separatist campaign in Assam.



They are not the only ones.



It is the same with the children of two other ULFA leaders - deputy commander-in-chief Raju Baruah and foreign secretary Sasha Choudhury - who are also lodged at the police guesthouse now.



Little Sishirkana who has turned eight is equally curious and quizzing her mother Runima Chetia, wife of Sasha Choudhury, about what is going on.



Sishirkana too thought her father was a businessman in Dhaka and that his name was Rafikul Islam - the name used by Choudhury to fake his identity in Bangladesh.



Raju Baruah's daughter Pragati, 10, is equally perturbed and confused - asking her mother Nirola Neog, 30, what actually happened and why they were under police cover.



For Pragati, her father is Anees Ahmed. She is unaware that he was born Hitesh Kalita and later became Raju Baruah.



"All the children are asking as to why they were being brought here and what would happen to their education as all of them were studying in Dhaka schools," the official said.



"They all thought they were Bangladeshis."



On Dec 4, the ULFA chairman, Raju Baruah, and Rajkhowa's personal security guard were arrested by Border Security Force officials near Dawki in Meghalaya after they reportedly surrendered.



Also arrested in the same group were the wives of Rajkhowa and Baruah, besides the wife of Sasha Choudhury, and their children.



Choudhury was arrested last month in a similar fashion and is now in jail.

At one point I had sympathy for ULFA, meaning if Indian govt cant protect you from bangladeshi mullahs, why not secede, but it is one more of a long series of treason by caste assamese

The reasons for North east exodus are as follows



1. There have been dozens of real attacks by muslims



2. Many of the North easterners are xtian beefeaters and live in muslim areas



3. Most of the Hindu north easterners are non-veg and live in muslim areas



4. Racial isolation and in the case of xtians also religious isolation from Hindu

Normal life was paralysed in Assam by a 12-hour bandh called by the Bajrang Dal to protest the violence in the lower Assam districts where the situation was calm with no fresh incident reported on Monday.

Reports had also said that around 1200 non Muslims had already fled from Dhubri district since the last few days fearing backlash.



Communities like Bengali Hindus and Koch-Rajbongshi comprised the maximum among the fleeing people from Assam's western district of Dhubri.



Dhubri is an Assam district bordering Bangladesh where, of the total population Muslims comprise of 75% .



In districts such as Nagaon in central Assam and Karimganj and Hailakandi in southern Assam where Muslims are majority, the state government is in full gear to contain any untoward incident.

The alleged rioter — Sayyed Mohammed Tabrej — who was arrested from Antop Hill, has claimed that on the eve of the riot, the officer organised a meeting with Bangladeshi nationals at Bangalipura, where he allegedly exhorted them to attend the gathering at Azad Maidan to protest against the killings of Bangladeshi Muslims in Assam and Burma.



On August 24, officers of the special investigation team (SIT) arrested three accused – Sayyed Mohammed Tabrej, Waseem Noor Mohammed Khan and Imran Sheikh, on the basis of CCTV footage, which showed Tabrej and Khan pelting stones, and Sheikh setting fire to a police van.



Earlier investigations into the case has revealed that many of the rioters were Bangladeshi nationals who were invited to the rally by an organisation, and went on a rampage after its chief said that it was mostly people of their nationality who were being brutalised in Assam and Burma.



Crime Branch sources revealed that Tabrej in his statement had revealed he was encouraged by the retired police officer to attend the rally. Paying heed to his advice, he arranged for over 100 men to be present at Azad Maidan. Assam has had a history of territorial battles between many of its 30 indigenous tribal and non-tribal groups but the violence in western Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) since July 20 appears to have united them against a common enemy — Bangladeshi immigrants. Organisations





representing these groups have pledged to drive away illegal Bangladeshis who they see as a ‘numerical threat’ to their ethnic identities. The underlying belief is: if Bodo tribal people are bearing the brunt of the influx, the others too are doomed.

“If Bodos don’t survive the Bangladeshi onslaught nor can the others,” said Ajit Basumatary, a resident of Kokrajhar town, the epicentre of the violence 236km west of Guwahati.



His prophecy followed the visit to strife-torn Kokrajhar by representatives of organisations representing 26 indigenous communities led by the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu). The visit was for a united effort to intensify the anti-foreigner movement in Assam and elsewhere in the region besides updating the National Register of Citizens.



All Bodo Students’ Union advisor Ron Gwra Narzary said the rapid growth of the population of immigrants in BTC areas was a concern. “There has been massive encroachment on government land, forest land and grazing fields by immigrants. This seems to be part of greater sinister design against Bodos,” he said.



President of All Assam Tribal Sangha Aditya Khakhlary seconded Narzary, alleging that the state government was encouraging encroachment on tribal blocks and belts that the British had identified to protect vulnerable tribes in Assam.



According to Aasu advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya, a solution to the Bangladeshi problem in Assam lies in implementation of the Assam Accord of 1985. “New Delhi has to provide constitutional safeguard to indigenous communities.”



The pro-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Assam too identified with the problems of the Bodos, as have the Dima Halam Daogah catering to the Dimasa tribe and other community-specific bodies.

So, the people who have not suffered directly have two options - (i) sleep peacefully now and wake up later just to know that they are already in deep trouble, or (ii) ACT NOW!



Apparently, except @Desi and @Manav, rest of greater Assamese population have already woken up. The result of Assam Bandh dated Aug 27, 2012 in the demand of arresting the conspirator Bazaruddin Ajmal and sealing the Indo-Bangladesh border completely was almost 100%. Not to mention, even the capital city of Guwahati observed complete bandh apart from Dhubri, Tinisukia, Kokrajhar, Jorhat, Tezpur, and all the cities, towns, and villages. The bandh was complete and I didn't see much enforcement by Bajrang Dal for their bandh call. The greater Assamese community observed this bandh by their own will because of the OBJECTIVE of the bandh call. I have seen this kind of successful bandh after a couple of decades.



The most interesting part was, the Chambers of Commerce of Hojai declared on the eve of the bandh that they were least bothered at what is happening in the other part of the state and they would boycott the bandh. Well well, did I say that the merchant association (aka Chambers of Commerce) would keep the shops open in Hojai? Now take this. The merchants have not listened to the dictatorship of their association leaders, but listened to their own souls. They OBSERVED the BANDH...!



It's not about making someone 'bakra' or publishing 'hate news'. It's about loving ones motherland and foresightedness.



I'm not a Bajrang Dal fan; however, the reason of this bandh call and the public support they received have given me enough reasons to appreciate their work. In my life, I've seen for the first time that the organization calling for the bandh was busy in humanitarian work during their bandh period. The passengers of the buses entering Assam were stranded at the border because of the bandh. The Bajrang Dal activists were seen serving them water and refreshment. That's the true spirit of a bandh call. Wow!

NEW DELHI: The CBI's preliminary investigation into the lower Assam violence has pointed to a bigger conspiracy behind the ethnic clashes. More arrests are expected soon as the agency is learnt to have zeroed in on certain people who might have been involved in the July 20 incident that sparked off the communal conflagration.



The agency, probing seven of the total 1,442 cases registered, has found enough evidence which shows that the first incident — that occurred on July 6 when the Kamtapuri Liberation Organization (KLO) militants killed two Muslims — had nothing to do with what happened later on July 19 onwards.



Two persons — Mahibul Haque Ratul and Mohammed Abu Siddique — were injured in an incident of indiscriminate firing by motorcycle-borne attackers in the same area in Kokrajhar on July 19. Both the incidents were more due to personal animosity and were unconnected. Details of both these incidents and statement of one arrested KLO militant were shared with local Muslim residents.



Still, four Bodo youth were attacked and killed at Jaipur under Kokrajhar Police Station by some unidentified Muslims with sharp weapons on July 20. That incident acted as a trigger that turned out to be a full-fledged communal violence, killing 88 people over the next one month.



Sources in the investigating agency said that the interrogation of all those arrested in connection with subsequent incidents showed that the killing of four Bodo youth on July 20 was a planned act. The CBI has some corroborative evidence.



"Despite being shared details of previous incidents, a group within the minority community simply chose to ignore the police\administration version. They planned to retaliate amid opposition from other Muslims from the area," said an official.

Fresh violence broke out in Assam, when two Muslim labourers were killed and another seriously injured in the riot-hit region of the state, taking the overall death toll to 80. The victims were working in a brick kiln field at Bangaldoba, in Dhubri district, when unidentified assailants fired on them.

Times of India = GUWAHATI: BJP senior leader S S Ahluwalia has raised doubts over the ongoing CBI probe into the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) violence, saying that he did not expect an impartial outcome from the investigation. He also asked the state government to initiate action against All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal alleging that his role for communalizing the BTAD violence should be investigated.



After his recent visit to the violence-affected Kokrajhar district, Ahluwalia said here on Monday that out of 309 cases registered in the violence, only seven were referred to the CBI. He also added that all the seven cases referred to the CBI were against Bodos.



"I want to ask why only seven out of 309 cases were referred to the CBI. And all the seven cases are against the Bodos. No cases against illegal Bangladeshis were referred to the investigation agency," Ahluwalia alleged.



The former deputy leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha also raised a finger of suspicion on the CBI Guwahati zone special director Salim Ali, demanding that he be replaced by someone else. Without elaborating on his reservation against Ali, Ahluwalia only asserted that Ali should not be allowed to investigate the cases of violence.



"My request is that Ali should be replaced by other official. By demanding Ali's replacement I am not saying that a Bodo official should be put in place. Rather I am asking for any non-Bodo official other than Ali," Ahluwalia demanded.



BJP also demanded that the role of AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal in communalizing the BTAD violence be investigated. At a time when chief minister Tarun Gogoi has appealed to all political parties to maintain a "ceasefire" on issuing provocative statements for the sake of bringing normalcy in BTAD, Ahluwalia claimed that majority of inmates of relief camps in Dhubri are Bangladeshi immigrants.



Even as different political and non-political parties are making fervent appeals for not communalizing the BTAD violence, Ahluwalia claimed that Hindus were being threatened in districts where they are in minority. The senior BJP leader demanded security of Hindus in Muslim-dominated districts of the state.

The bandh was called to demand scrapping of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) that runs the administration in four districts of BTAD.

Bandh supporters also demanded the arrest of BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary.

Late Monday night, unidentified miscreants attacked some villages under Fakiragram and Salekati police stations in Kokrajhar district, killing one person and injuring six others.

Police said the miscreants also set fire to some villages.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Tuesday instructed the state authorities to deal with the situation strictly. He also appealed to people to help the police contain the situation and asked party leaders not to make any provocative statements that might aggravate the situation.

“Additional security forces and columns of the army have been rushed to the area. No one found to be involved in the clashes will be spared,” Gogoi said Tuesday.

The district administration has also sounded an alert in all the districts in BTAD and night curfew was in force in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts.

At Jogighopa in Bongaigaon district, police resorted to blank firing to disperse bandh supporters, who blocked National Highway 31 in the district. Police fired rubber bullets, injuring nine bandh supporters.

In Dhubri, security forces resorted to blank firing to disperse bandh supporters who burnt Mohilary’s effigy on NH 31 at Gauripur.

At New Hatipota near Bilasipara, bandh supporters blocked National Highway 31 and ransacked the office of the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF).

In Sonitpur, activists damaged the official vehicles of the Tezpur Circle Officer, Sarangapani Sarma, and officer-in-charge of Bhojkhowa police station at Bhojkhowa.

In Sonitpur and Barpeta districts, bandh supporters attacked journalists.

Sporadic incidents of violence were also reported from Morigaon, Nagaon and Sibsagar districts
