Speaking from experience , I know of several families among my relatives and aquaintance in Bengal, which mirrors your story: father a staunch "rationalist", anti-hindu, abusive, while the mother was hyper hindu-heathen. The children, because of the hatred of father, followed their mother. Yes, I agree with you that we need to find out if their prospective bride or groom is anti-hindu or heathen or not. That is far more important ghan sticking to kinship.
