The missile that does not care

A very interesting and mind boggling capability as far as advanced RV goes , I think its also confirmed in Lightening Bolts though I am waiting for my copy.

Quote:in every sense - is the nuclear re-entry vehicle, in fact a ramjet-boosted supersonic cruise missile whose additional sustainer engine accelerates it to between Mach 4 and Mach 5

Quote:new experimental re-entry vehicle that in effect "bounced" between the upper atmosphere and outer space. This maneuver is incredible as a normal re-entry velocity for a warhead is around 5,000mps. The test vehicle, however, defied skeptics and successfully survived all the maneuvers thanks to its effective heat and g-load protection systems.

Such maneuverability renders a missile system a crucial surprise advantage, as the adversary cannot launch a fire-and-forget interceptor weapon because no anticipated point of contact is known or can be reliably calculated.

Quote:The warhead fires off the vehicles in midcourse, changing direction twice a minute to fool warning radars as to where the charges are heading. Each vehicle is assigned an individual target at up to 100km (60 miles) from the separation point.

Quote:"In a huge improvement over conventional ballistic warheads, this re-entry vehicle can either follow a preset flight maneuvering program or be re-targeted when it is already over enemy territory,"

The US has several hidden aircraft that the world doesn't know about. They are kept in the desert regions near Area 51. The only other country that knows about them is the secret society of London.

It's sad you fail to grasp the seriousness of the situation US citizens face. Your country is bankrupt, flat broke. All countries worldwide are deeply in debt. Foreign bankers will confiscate resources and land in lieu of payment. Greece is a good example.

US President John F Kennedy said 10 days before his assassination, "The high office of President has been used to foment a plot to destroy the Americans' freedom, and before I leave office I must inform the citizen of his plight."

Quote: Aides to U.S. general in Afghanistan slam Obama: report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The top U.S. general in Afghanistan apologized on Monday for comments by his aides insulting some of President Barack Obama's closest advisers in an article to be published on Friday in Rolling Stone magazine.

The article also quotes an aide describing the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan General Stanley McChrystal's "disappointment" with his initial one-on-one meeting with Obama last year.

"I extend my sincerest apology for this profile. It was a mistake reflecting poor judgment and should never have happened," McChrystal said in a statement.

"Throughout my career, I have lived by the principles of personal honor and professional integrity. What is reflected in this article falls far short of that standard," he said.

"I have enormous respect and admiration for President Obama and his national security team, and for the civilian leaders and troops fighting this war and I remain committed to ensuring its successful outcome."

The Rolling Stone article, which quoted several McChrystal aides anonymously, portrays a split between the U.S. military and Obama's advisers at an extremely sensitive moment for the Pentagon, which is fending off criticism of its strategy to turn around the nearly nine-year-old Afghan war.

It quotes a member of McChrystal's team making jokes about Vice President Joe Biden, who was seen as critical of the general's efforts to escalate the conflict and who had favored a more limited counter-terrorism approach.

"Biden?" the aide was quoted as saying. "Did you say: Bite me?"

Another aide called White House National Security Adviser Jim Jones, a retired four star general, a "clown" who was "stuck in 1985."

It quoted an adviser to McChrystal dismissing an early meeting with Obama as a "10-minute photo op."

"Obama clearly didn't know anything about him, who he was. The boss was pretty disappointed," the adviser told the magazine.

McChrystal, a workaholic said to sleep just four hours a day, was brought into Afghanistan a year ago after his predecessor was pushed out.

The article portrays his teams as disapproving of the Obama administration, with the exception of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who backed McCrystal's request for additional troops in Afghanistan.

Some of the strongest criticism was reserved for Richard Holbrooke, Obama's special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"The boss says he's like a wounded animal," a member of the general's team is quoted as saying. "Holbrooke keeps hearing rumors that he's going to get fired, so that makes him dangerous."

McChrystal was quoted as saying he felt "betrayed" by the leak of a classified cable from U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry last year. The cable raised doubts about sending more troops to shore up an Afghan government already lacking in credibility.

"I like Karl, I've known him for years, but they'd never said anything like that to us before," McChrystal was quoted as saying in the article.

"Here's one that covers his flank for the history books. Now if we fail, they can say, 'I told you so.'"

Before 2011 election, Obama will close shop in Afghanistan. India should be ready.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal, top commander in Afghanistan, ordered home over Rolling Stone comments

Quote:The first casualty from the article appears to be a civilian member of McChyrstal's staff who allegedly arranged the Rolling Stone interview.

NBC News reported that Duncan Boothby quit his role on the general's public relations team. According to a senior military official, he was "asked to resign."

Last year, Obama criticized the general over his call for more troops in Afghanistan. In September, McChrystal issued a report saying without more soldiers, the war "will likely result in failure."

The president eventually added 30,000 soldiers to the war, but McChrystal and his staff felt Obama took to long and found his July 2011 deadline for withdrawal arbitrary.

"I found that time painful," McChrystal said. "I was selling an unsellable position."

Among McChrystal's criticisms in the Rolling Stone interview:

The general said he felt "betrayed" by U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry, a former three-star general. In a leaked document last year, Eikenberry said he distrusted Afghan president Hamid Karzai. "Here's one that covers his flank for the history books," McChrystal told Rolling Stone of Eikenberry.

McChrystal, the article reports, took control of the war, the article states, "by never taking his eye off the real enemy: The wimps in the White House." <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

An aide is quoted as calling National Security Adviser Gen. (Ret.) Jim Jones a "clown."

On Richard Holbrooke, the president's envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, a McChrystal staffer says he is a "wounded animal," dangerous because rumors speculated Holbrooke would be fired.

The general said that while he voted for Obama, the two men never hit it off in meetings last fall and he found the president unprepared.

However, McChrystal said Tuesday he has "enormous respect" for Obama and his team and emphasized his devotion to winning the war.

"I remain committed to ensuring its successful outcome," he said.

Quote:Negev, Israel (UPI) Jan 27, 2011

Israel conducted a massive controlled explosion to calibrate instruments at seismic monitoring stations worldwide, officials said.

Using 100 tons of explosives, The Geophysical Institute of Israel conducted the explosion at a site in the Negev on Wednesday.

It registered 2.7 on the Richter scale, and created a mushroom cloud that reached the height of up to 1.78 miles, or three kilometers, Haaretz reported Thursday.

Local scientists and scientists from the U.S. and France as well as journalists observed the blast.

Dr. Rami Hofstetter, head of seismology at the Geophysical Institute told the newspaper the experiment was important to study how seismic waves travel.

Testing stations located in countries such as Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia, all members of the International Monitoring System, were able to measure the explosion, the newspaper said.

Stations in Africa, North America, South America, Asia and Europe provide data about nuclear tests that have not been reported to the United Nations or the international community, Haaretz said.

The data was broadcast to the stations using equipment located 328 feet from the blast site and immediately transferred by satellite to the international data center located in Vienna for processing.

US military loses contact with hypersonic aircraft

Quote: 12 August 2011 Last updated at 05:45 ET US military scientists lost contact with an unmanned hypersonic experimental aircraft on its second test flight, officials said.

The Falcon Hypersonic Test Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) successfully separated from its rocket but lost contact shortly into its "glide phase".

The plane is designed to travel at Mach 20, or 20 times the speed of sound.

The Falcon project is part of the US defence department's plans to develop a rapid-strike weapons system.

A hypersonic plane could potentially enable the US military to hit targets anywhere in the world in under an hour.

Highly complex The HTV-2 - shaped like the tip of a spear - took off atop a Minotaur IV rocket from Vanderberg Air Force Base in California early on Thursday.

It was propelled to the edges of space where it then separated from the rocket.

The aim by engineers was that it would glide back to Earth at 13,000mph (21,000km/h) - enduring temperatures in excess of 3,500F (2,000C) - before plunging into the Pacific Ocean.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa), which is funding the HTV-2 programme and overseeing the tests, said more than nine minutes of data was collected "before an anomaly caused loss of signal".

"Initial indications are that the aircraft impacted the Pacific Ocean along the planned flight path," Darpa said in a statement on its website.

An HTV-2 plane was first tested last year, and ended with the craft crashing into the Pacific after the military lost contact with the glider nine minutes into the flight.

However, the flight still managed to return 139 seconds of aerodynamic data at a velocity between 17 and 22 times the speed of sound, Darpa said.

"We know how to boost the aircraft to near space," Maj Chris Schulz, the programme manager, was quoted as saying on Darpa's website.

"We know how to insert the aircraft into atmospheric hypersonic flight. We do not yet know how to achieve the desired control during the aerodynamic phase of flight. It's vexing; I'm confident there is a solution. We have to find it."

Maj Shulz said a team of experts would now analyse the flight data and expand "our technical understanding of this incredibly harsh flight regime".

Some analysts say a second uncompleted flight could force Darpa to rethink the entire project, the BBC's Marcus George in Washington reports.

via DARPA's news release. An unmanned aircraft engineered to go 20 times the speed of sound was lost on its second test flight Thursday. The BBC reports that scientists lost track of the Falcon Hypersonic Test Vehicle 2, or HTV-2, shortly after it detached from a rocket high above the California coast. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, published a press release saying that the "aircraft impacted the Pacific Ocean along the planned flight path."

The spear-shaped HTV-2 is, according to DARPA, "the fastest aircraft ever built." It is designed to travel at 13,000 mph and fly to anywhere in the world in under an hour. The only problem is that it's a real Mother to fly. HTV-2 program manager Air Force Maj. Chris Schulz said, "Here's what we know. We know how to boost the aircraft to near space. We know how to insert the aircraft into atmospheric hypersonic flight. We do not yet know how to achieve the desired control during the aerodynamic phase of flight. It's vexing; I'm confident there is a solution. We have to find it."

Still, the HTV-2 collected valuable data before it lost contact with earthbound scientists. This information will be reviewed by an independent panel to determine what the future has in store for this aircraft and whether or not we'll be able to order pizza from Italy in under an hour.

How do the Agni Rvs compare to the above HTV test article?

HTV is a classical hypersonic glide vehicle PLUS it is for Mach-20 (I.e. ICBM range velocity regime). Relying on hot gas reaction control for attitude maneuvering The design relies on extreme low radar observability and high package density in MIRV configuration.

Agni-II RV OTOH has been tested for lower speed range. Some versions use fins and other hot gas.

Clearly the lift to drag ratio is very different, but it can do hyper sonic glide apart from maneuvering RV (aka MaRV).

BTW I am not sure of the falcon is shaped as stated in various drawings/rendering. I expect it to have a more blunt tip similar to earlier US experiments on Hypersonic glide vehicle as reported by Bill Yengst in Lightening Bolts.

From my memeory the ISRO Avatar still has a blunt albeit smaller diameter nose, apparently made of Carbon -Carbon composite

The Falcon noise is very pointed just like old style US RV (I.e. very high beta), and most likely made of graphite and backed by C-C Composite. Indicating its far longer capability to do hypersonic glide

Quote:MOSCOW: A new intercontinental Russian missile whose development has been kept as a state secret failed in its first test-firing and crashed back into the launch zone, reports said Wednesday.

Reports published on Russian news agencies about the failed test firing from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia appeared to be the first indication that the ground-based missile even existed.

"After launch, the missile fell back down onto the territory of the cosmodrome. There were no casualties or damage," a military source told the state RIA Novosti news agency.

The Interfax news agency quoted its source as saying that the cause of the failed launch - which took place on Tuesday but was not announced at the time -- was a problem with the second stage of the missile.

A defence ministry spokesman confirmed to Interfax that there had been tests the day earlier at Plesetsk of "new types of rocket technologies" but did not give any further details. Contacted by AFP, the ministry did not offer any comment.

Russia news agencies said that the new missile was a development of Topol-M and Yars strategic missiles which have a range of over 10,000 kilometres. But the new missile has special features to defeat air defence systems.

"This was the first launch of the rocket which is equipped with a multiple warhead with a range of features to overcome air defence systems," a military source told the news agency.

The secret development of a missile that is able to beat air defences comes at a time when Russia is still locked in a tense dispute with the United States over its plans to install such systems in ex-Communist Eastern Europe.

The failure of the missile is also just the latest setback for Russia's rocket forces after a series of mishaps with its submarine-launched intercontinental Bulava missile.

Russia has now carried out 16 tests of the Bulava, seven of which ended in failure.

The most embarrassing Bulava setback was in late 2009 when the missile's failure caused spectacular images in the sky above the Norwegian city of Tromso that locals initially put down to a meteor, the northern lights or even a UFO.

Analysts said that the new missile was most likely a modified version of the Yars (RS-24) which the gazeta.ru online newspaper said had the name "Avangard".

The director of the Director of the Center for Public and Political Research Vladimir Evseyev told Interfax that the missile did not appear to be a complely new design but had a range of features like decoy warheads aimed at defeating air defence systems.

Given Russia's disputes with the United States on the issue "an expansion of the possibilities of Russian rockets against air defence systems is a completely logical step," he said.

Washington said that its plan for an air defence facility in Eastern Europe is aimed against the risk of attack by rogue states such as Iran but Moscow has always expressed alarm that the systems would be aimed against his borders.
