UPA Achievements
#1
Thread started based on comments by Ravish in 'Advice to BJP' thread. Ravish and others interested can contribute here.

Given that Congress has been in power for some 50+ years out of 60 since independence and the first family been in power for about the same number of years, it'll be a worthwhile effort to list their achievements and contributions to India.

Virenji,

Sufficient achievements have already been listed so I think no further scope for discussion is now left for the rest. However, you may like to initiate discussion on the achievements.

You aren't getting off that easy Ravishji. I'm sure there's something that you can point to in past 50 years of Congress rule which you are proud off.
This shoot-and-scoot has to stop.

2) Though India did not have much choice, PVNR was a good leader during the liberalization during 1991.

Chidambaram blocks Anti-Conversion bill

QUOTEThe central government is going to block the anti-conversion Bills that have been introduced by various BJP governments but the response is not uniform.

Home Minister P Chidambaram has decided to take a firm stand on the anti-controversial religious conversion Bills blocking Presidential assent. But the response is different for various state governments.

So, in Rajasthan where the Congress is in power the Centre has asked the Ashok Gehlot government whether it plans to drop the Bill passed by the earlier BJP government.

In Madhya Pradesh where a BJP government is still in place, the Centre has decided to withhold assent.
Centre stops anti-conversion laws:

* Rajasthan: Left it to Congress government to drop Bill
* Madhya Pradesh: Rejected BJP government's Bill

Broadly the Bills provisions banned conversion by force or fraud or inducement and made it punishable. But all this, the Centre says violate the freedom of religion as laid down in the constitution.

"When I was CM in those 10 years there was no case for forcible conversion," said Digvijay Singh, former Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh.

"This is unacceptable and goes against Supreme Court judgements," said Ravi Shankar Prasad, Leader, BJP.

The BJP-led states had proposed laws in response to the increase in conversions by Christian missionaries.

But ironically they weren't the only ones, the Congress had passed a similar law in Himachal Pradesh and Orissa too has one which was passed in 1967.

Savitriji,
After the announcement of the results, I am very comfortable and will continue to remain so for the next five years. There are two major aspects that are shaping the political canvas of India presently. On the one hand you have the BJP, a party full of opportunist politicians ready to kill one another for safeguarding their own interest. On the other hand we have an electorate who are becoming increasingly conscious of their voting rights and the power of their votes. This will prevent the political parties to influence the voters with false hopes and promises. They will be much more demanding in the future and so BJP in order to be a relevant Party will have to match to the aspirations of the voters. There will be a serious conflict of interest between the traditional political thinkers and the aspiring new voters.
Since many of my friends in this forum are eagerly waiting for my assessment of UPA’s programmes and achievement, I will not disappoint them. I also look forward to the violent and sometime abusive reaction; which I hope to enjoy being a humble citizen of this vibrant democracy.
A few of the achievements that I can think of at this point of time are as follows:
1. Getting India out of the ban by the world community on nuclear exports.
2. Cornering Pakistan diplomatically subsequent to the terrorist attack on Mumbai.
3. Gradual diversification of our defense purchases and getting Western equipment along with Russian equipment.
4. Providing loan waver to the farmers.
5. Rural employment scheme.
6. Further consolidation of the mid day meal scheme for the school children.
7. Higher fund allocation for rural development and in the health sector.
I think these are sufficient ammunition for Shri Mudiji

Some external affairs / strategic policy related:

- Through its hands-off policy, allowing the anti-Indian maoists (in reality chInI stooges) to take over Nepal, indeed supporting them by taking such steps as not timely supplying the military hardware to Royal Nepal Army for which it had already placed purchase orders to Indian Govt.

- Further dilution of strategic depth in Nepal, by creating space for USA/UN to have an unprecedented direct role in the country.

- While making substantial investment in Afghanistan, both human and capital, failure to receive any depth in the region. Not too long back the Himachal University graduate Karzai banned all Indian TV content from being aired in the country as it was "against Moslem values". No protest/retort from GoI. Recently, one visiting US Secretary in Delhi openly suggested that India should drastically downsize their diplomatic presence (and therefore role) in Kabul.

- Allowing China to encircle Indian Ocean through proxies and strategic installations in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Indonesia.

- Economic and diplomatic offensive of China continues, without any response from India.

- India was purposefully insulted by the chIna-s by not inviting its head of state to their demo of power, the inauguration of Beijing Olympics. Soniaji rather than declining the invitation, which should have been the right response to this insult, happily went to attend the ceremony with her family.

- Becoming a virtual stooge of USA in the Iran policy, rather than serving own national interests.

- After India becoming a "strategic" ally of USA through the famed nuclear deal, US seems to have gone back to its 80s attitude about its hyphenated "Indo-Pak" policy. From new US president to the minor officials openly make references to the "aspirations of the Kashmiris" or resolving Kashmir "issue".

- US citizen (possibly an undercover operative), whose link to 26/11 remains unexplained, allowed to simply walk away.

- Declined to have any role in the "internal affairs of Malaysia" when Hindus of that country were/are being persecuted by its jehadi set up. Declined to play any role in Sri Lanka.

- PM who was greatly disturbed, and could not sleep, because Australian govt had detained an Indian Moslem on suspicion of terrorism, has no comments to make on continued racial harrassment against Hindus/Indians in Australia and elsewhere. It is an internal affaire of those countries.

- Forged (by CBI/IT!) documents sent to a swiss bank, which resulted in failure of persuing case against taskar Hasan Ali Khan.

- Allowing harrassment of Taslima Nasreen at the hands of moslem goons. Not extending her visa until last minute, and then too only for a few months. Not giving her Indian citizenship, while there are over 20 million illegal Bangladeshis living in India. Keeping her in virtual prison and then throwing her out of India.

Here comes direct from Congress manifesto and 10 Janapath talking point -
Why farmers are still committing suicide in India? Who actually got benefited by loan waver? Why rich farmers are not paying tax and still enjoying loan waver? Why every jack ass go to bank before election and take out loan knowingly that it will get waved.

Have you ever visited rural hospital funded by Indian Government in last 2-3 years? Yet to see single paisa invested on any municipal hospital other than they are fast track to heaven or hell buildings. Some so called rural hospitals are just on paper and some buildings are used as barn. I think we had posted in this website and long stories of Babus cheating everyone.
Forget about rural hospitals or clinics funded by so-called Congress Government, have you visited out-patient ward of AIIMS, New Delhi in last two years, even appointed Prime Minister of India refused to go for surgery by Government doctors, he called private doctors, Why ? Did Congress manifesto had provided you with answer?

Two- three years back around 60 kids died in one school from government provided so called meal programme. I want to know is there any monitoring and data which can shows number of kids actually been benefited by this scheme. Till dead kids are not from your family, it means Government scheme started by Congress is working.

Oh yes, Why not close DoD and other money eating departments, when you happy to buy products from western sources? Now you can get more cuts from western sources. Last you are the one promoting Russian stuff now west, what a change?

Pakistan is very busy with US, Did so called circus diplomacy of Indian had saved any single Indian life. I am still seeing news from border area that Pakis are still bombing borders, so where is diplomacy or they are just busy enjoying whore services and shopping for mistress and wives.

If above was UPA achievement than Indians should hang their head in shame.
Only genius can gloat on fast track India's bankruptcy scheme.

Despite such negative and anti national policies, the fact remains that the majority of the voters have favored the UPA over the NDA which is very much evident from the election results. No one from the BJP top leadership has made any allegation of malfunctioning of the EVMs or rigging or intimidation of the voters by the Congress and the other alliance partners. The allegations made on these counts by certain forum members are thus not substantiated as no one has prevented the BJP or the other parties that have done poorly in the elections to make these allegations. Therefore, it is difficult to believe that the Congress party has manipulated the election results to its favor in a national scale.
There is no point in going into the specifics, the verdict of the voters should be respected and as such it should be accepted that they have expressed their preference for the UPA over the NDA and have mandated them to run the Government for the next five years. Depending on the performance of the UPA the voters will again decide in 20014 whether they need a change or allow the UPA to run the show for another five years.
In conclusion I would like to mention that despite the voluminous compilation of negative achievements of the UPA Government by the forum members, unfortunately these have not influenced the verdict given by the masses of this country. The national voting figures also indicate that at least 50% of the voters have exercised their voting rights and as such we cannot term it as a election boycott by the electorate. Lastly, the nation of more than a billion people is moving and alive despite its shortcomings , which no one denies.

"Despite such negative and anti national policies, the fact remains that the majority of the voters have favored the UPA over the NDA."

No denying that Congress Party has got an undisputed clear mandate to rule over bhArata, and I dont think anyone here is questioning it on this forum in particular. So no point in performing the verdict-verdict jApa.

verdict only means people favour these people (and policies). Does not mean that the policies they voted for is really in interest of the nation.

Which also means that it was a failure of BJP in articulating the message and educating the people about the policies, besides that they too have not much significant differences in above policies - one can likewise count the NDA failures on similar lines, maybe more, too.

26% percent voted for COngress is no way majority. Simple mathematics.
50% stayed away from ballot box, on top add EVN corruption.

Why Indian failed to come out on street like brave Iranians? I think Indians need awakeining to understand Government is not the solution, they should kick out Babus or reduce their influence in everyday life.

Mudy check your source. Congress vote share is 28.6 and gap between them and the number 2, BJP, is about whopping 10% popular vote.

Party-wise Vote Shares (in %)
Party 2004 2009 Gain/Loss
Congress 26.53 28.55 +2.02
BJP 22.16 18.8 -3.36
BSP 5.33 6.17 +0.84
CPI 1.41 1.43 +0.02
CPI(M) 5.66 5.33 -0.33
Others 38.91 39.73 +0.82
Source: Election Commission of India

Also the voter turnout in 2009 was at 58.43%, slightly higher than 58.07% in 2004, not much different from earlier other elections including 1998. You can find all the correct stats at http://eci.nic.in/Analysis/

I dont buy the "EVM fraud" cried about by the juvenile/senile BJP-loyalists, like the loser kids do. Why can we not digest the simple fact that the PEOPLE HATE BJP, have rejected it, and voted for Congress as they see it better than the BJP.

While on the topic of voter turn out, do notice that it is especially in the BJP-strongholds (with exception of Karnataka) that the turnout was dismal as opposed to Congress areas where it was 70%+.

non-BJP areas voted massively: WB (80.07!!!!), Orissa (65.34), AP (72.36), TN (72.57), Kerala (73.35), Assam (69.58).

Compare these with BJP/NDA-strong states:

Following are at the bottom, sorted in order of % votes polled!!!

Himachal (pleasant weather) : 58.4
Uttarakhand(pleasant weather) : 52.85
Delhi: 52.01
Jharkhand 51.62
Madhya Pradesh 51.31
Maharashtra 51.01
Rajasthan 48.43
Uttar Pradesh 48.01
Gujarat 47.90
Bihar 44.73

What does the above tell you?

That the people who were otherwise BJP supporters before, and had voted for BJP earlier, saw no motivation for doing so this time. Of course they could not support Congress, so rather than wasting their vote on cheat BJP fellows, they stayed home.

And in contrast, Congress was able to motivate its voters in the areas it is strong in like AP, etc.

Once again: http://eci.nic.in/Analysis/

By the way, voter turnout in the GREATEST democracy the US of America hovers around 50%. It was high 56.8% in 2008 election, 55.3% in 04, 51.3 in 2000 and even less 49.1% in 96. In contrast, the 58+% Indian votesrs who dared the heat of jyeShThAShADhau to come out for polling must be congratulated.

[Bodhiji,

The figures given by you may not be taken on there face value by the blind supporters of BJP in the forum, who can bring out another theory to defend the performance of the BJP at the polls.
However , from the figures quoted by you it is observed that the national average has been 58%. Therefore, it can be safely said that a voting figure of 50% and above should be considered as normal. If we agree to this figure than it appears that the voters turn out in MP, Uttera Khand, Delhi, Himachal should not be termed as poor. So it is not that in these States the former BJP supporters remained indoors. It may be that many of them have changed sides and ensured the victory of the Congress and the UPA.If they had stayed back en mass and not participated in the voting then the figures should have been much lower.

Bodhi,
My source was based on EC data. 3 weeks back.

Let me give you some example, In AP, my cousin family went to polling booth and found out his family had already voted. Last election it happened with my Chacha's family and this year they stayed at home. This is happening even with ID card.
WB, is known for Scientific rigging. This is too high; they are beating Saddam's record.
Congress voting percentage gets boost from South or North East India.

Agree , lack of motivation to get out and vote was main problem, but this doesn't mean it is endorsement of Congress policies as some in this forum are promoting.

Indians will get what they deserve for next 5 years, unless and until Congress breaks into 2 or 3 parts.

Nehru bloodlinists like you have this irritating analytical ability using which they can produce any analysis through their head without looking for any data.

Here are some facts from the election of 1999 which saw NDA come to power on its own. Following shows the polling% in the states which had largely elected BJP/NDA majority, and which made BJP lose/not reach the expected-mark, this time:

UTTAR PRADESH 53.63 (dropped to 48.01 in 2009) -> 5+% polling drop!
MADHYA PRADESH 54.94 (dropped to 51.31 in 2009) -> 4+% polling drop!
MAHARASHTRA 62.72 (dropped to 51.01 in 2009) -> 11+% polling drop!
RAJASTHAN 53.94 (48.43 2009) -> 5+% polling drop!

GUJARAT 47.73 (stays at 47.90) - no change, not much change in seats too.

the states which had elected NDA component, which later ran away:
ANDHRA PRADESH 69.49 (72.36 in 09) -> 3% increase, Congress swing
TAMIL NADU 58.72 (72.57 in 09) -> 14% increase, DMK swing

what it tell us is two things:

- In BJP-presence states, the reduced polling correlates with BJP's loss of votes. Which in turn means what i suggested before: core voters of BJP were not motivated to vote for BJP, they stayed home (reducing the polling%, and overall drop in BJP votes by 2+ national% and about 18+% on BJP's base). We can test this hypothesis even at the constituency level dataset too. Where BJP came at second position and lost by a small (<1-2%) margin, it was due to drop in polling in that Lok Sabha. At a higher aggregation, national average of averages was about 60.6% in 99 - as opposed to 58.8% of 09, which too corresponds with the loss in BJP vote share!

- Shifting of vote to Congress in not from BJP, but from the loss of vote by the partners of UPA: Lalu, Paswan, Mulayam etc. Most notably it is apparent that Congress was rewarded for its appeasement policy by the Moslems. This can be seen especially in UP and Bihar, where many Congress candidates have won in the moslem-dominated constituencies defeating their nearesr rivals from BJP (E.g. Match-fixer of Hyderabad winning from Moradabad). At some places the contest for moslem votes was direct one between Cong and other moslem-lovers, e.g. in Rampur where Jaya Prada of SP defeated Congress' Begum Noor Bano --

- Above signifies that the revival of congress is thanks to a) BJP's inability to motivate its base, b) return of the moslem, c) defeat of the commies in WB!

- BSP, while did not show massive win in terms of seats, has shown how its popularity has increased. It is now the third largest party after Cong and BJP not only by number of seats but more importantly by vote shares, with 6+% national votes, displacing CPIM from this position. Was I wrong in suggesting that BJP should give away PM candidature to Mayawati and contest jointly? That would have seen a BJP-BSP government in Delhi today. Would that have been less acceptable to BJP than the present outcome?

- In fact, there is some trend to show that BJP votes in UP, MP, Raj, Punjab, and finally Bihar, are more naturally inclined to eventually migrate to BSP. Let us see if Mayawati is intelligent enough to understand it and stop moslem appeasement. Moslem certainly understands this.
