<b>US denies any role in 26/11 witness mystery</b><!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Anita Uddaiya, the woman who saw the six terrorists involved in the November 26 terror attacks arrive in the city, claims she was taken to the United States and questioned by investigating agencies there.
"I was informed that the (US) officers who questioned me about the Mumbai attacks here earlier would take me to America. They came on Sunday morning and took me to America," Uddaiya told PTI.
"I had lied to the police when I returned home stating that I went to Satara district as the officers told me not to disclose anything about my visit to America," Uddaiya said.
Uddaiya went missing on Sunday morning and returned to Mumbai on Wednesday at around 1.30 am.
She had seen the terrorists land in a rubber dinghy on the beach at the colony. But when she asked them where they had come from, she was told to mind her own business.
Giving details, she said on Saturday at around 10.00 pm, the investigating officers were supposed to come to her home.
"Since we were informed about Uddaiya's America visit, we sat with her throughout the night waiting for the American investigators. Nobody turned up till morning 5 am. At that time, Uddaiya went to toilet from where she was whisked away by the investigators," said Madhusudhan Nair, president of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Nagar slum area.
Uddaiya said four officers were inside the posh vehicle and one of them knew Hindi.
"First, I was taken to St George Hospital to see my husband Rajendra. I told him that I would return home in a couple of days. From the hospital I was taken to airport," Uddaiya said.
<b>"I was sitting in the airport while they (officers) were showing documents to the officials at the airport. I had no luggage with me. After sometime, I boarded the flight but I was feeling uncomfortable," </b>Uddaiya recalled.
<b>Uddaiya, who spent 17-18 hours in her flight to the US, said she was told they were heading to America. </b>
"I could not eat in the flight properly as they were serving chocolates, sandwiches and some other stuff. I don't know how I managed to eat that food."
"I was taken to a posh hotel in a car soon after I landed in America. After a couple of hours, we all went to a building where I was asked several questions about the terrorists and Mumbai attacks," she said.
She said she was asked about the terrorists whom she had seen landing at Mumbai.
"The questions were translated in Hindi by one of them and whatever answers I had given were also explained to them in English. Everything was over in two to three hours. I even called Hamid Qureshi (a scrap dealer where she works in Mumbai) telling him I am safe," she said, adding that she was taken to the hotel subsequently and then to the airport to board a flight back to Mumbai.
On returning home in a taxi from Mumbai airport, Uddaiya said she was confused and surprised at what was happening around her. She said she was taken to the Cuffe Parade police station for recording her statement

<b>Softening its stand that Pakistan should hand over perpetrators of Mumbai attacks and other fugitives, India has said that it will have no objection if they are put through "fair trial" in that country itself.</b>
"<b>It would be ideal if they (Pakistan) can hand over the fugitives from India to us. If that is not possible, there should at least be a fair trial of these fugitives in Pakistan," </b>External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told Aaj Tak channel.
<b>He said that it should not be a "mock trial" but a "transparent and demonstrated" one.</b>
His statement marks softening of India's position that the fugitives should be handed over to face "Indian justice".
Pakistan has all through said that it will not hand over any of the suspects to India and would, if needed, try them there.
Mukherjee on Wednesday hoped Pakistan would hand over the "fugitives of Indian law", notwithstanding Islamabad's refusal to do so, and asked the world community to build pressure on Pakistan in a "concerted" manner to ensure that perpetrators of Mumbai attacks are brought to justice.
India has been maintaining that it does not have faith in the Pakistani judicial system as the Zardari Government itself does not have trust in it which was reflected by its demand for UN probe into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
Significantly, Mukherjee's changed stand comes close on the heels of Britain saying that the fugitives need not be handed over to India and that they could be tried in Pakistan itself<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

"There is no question of that (giving up the extradition demand) or climb down."</b>
The minister was reported to have said this week in an interview with the India Today media group that those accused in the Mumbai attacks could be tried and punished in Pakistan , a comment Indian newspapers interpreted as a climbdown in New Delhi's demand for extradition of militants.
Mukherjee's India Today interview came after Foreign Secretary David Miliband said the Pakistani state was not linked to the Mumbai attacks and he showed no support for India's demand for extradition of the accused.
<b>"There is no question of that we have given up this demand,"</b> Mukherjee said in a televised statement Friday. Tensions have flared between the nuclear-armed neighbours since the attacks, which India blamed on Pakistani militants backed by some official agencies there.
India went into diplomatic overdrive to gain support for its case after the November attacks that killed 179 people, but some of its Western allies such as the United States and Britain expressed doubts New Delhi had enough evidence to implicate the Pakistani state.
Besides demanding extradition of the accused, India also wants Pakistan to destroy what it says are militant camps.
India has handed Pakistan data from satellite phones used by the attackers and what it describes as the confession of a surviving gunman, part of a dossier of evidence.
Pakistan has said the dossier did not amount to evidence and that the "information" needed to be carefully examined.

"What if Pakistan and US both tell India that does your law have similar provision which accepts Kasab's statement as evidence? What can be more unfortunate?" he wondered.
"There is no law in our country that would consider the statement of an arrested person before a top-level police official as evidence," he added.
"Despite the situation, we are trying to convince Pakistan to consider the statement as evidence. This is very much contradictory," Modi said.
"The abolished POTA had that provision, GUJCOC (Gujarat Control of Organised Crime) has the same provision and even MACOCA has the similar provision," he said, adding "We also need a similar law at the national level to fight terrorism."
"If one who has committed a crime makes a statement before a higher rank police official, it should be treated as evidence in the court of law," he added.

The UK is in a damage-control mode after controversial comments made by British Foreign Secretary David Miliband on 26/11 investigations, the judicial system in Pakistan and the Kashmir issue.
Speaking to NDTV, British Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Lord Peter Mandelson said that in fact, Miliband did not make any such comments.
Earlier, India reacted sharply to British Foreign Secretary David Miliband's comments on Jammu and Kashmir saying that he should not give unsolicited advice.
Miliband had said that the Kashmir dispute must be resolved as the Lashkar's cause is Kashmir.
New Delhi was also unhappy with Miliband's support to Pakistan's position that those wanted by India for terrorism need not be handed over but tried in Pakistan.

Speaking at a reception at the Chinese embassy here on Wednesday night, Qureshi said he had told Chinese special envoy He Yafei to "go to Delhi and you have a blank cheque from us".
