Legend says that Arjuna came to this sthalam with thirst was searching for water.Lord Krishna helped him by presenting him a sword by which Arjuna pierced the earth for water and quenched his thirst.There is a separate shrine for Arjuna in this temple.There is another utsavar by name Kolavilliraman near by this temple as well.
As per the sthalapuranam vaisampayana was narrating bhagavatham to Janamejayan, and was referring to Lord Krishna's visit to Hasthinapuram as Pandava's Dhoota(Ambassador). Desiring to have the Vishwaroopa darsana they performed Ashwamedhayagam at Kanchi.

Legend says Lord gave Dharshan to King sipi and Markandeyar who were chasing after a white pig (varaham). King Sipi thereafter built this temple and later renovated with great art and sculpture works by king Narasimhavarma pallava.As this temple is older than srirangam, hence the name "Adhi vellarai".Ramanuja spent sometime in this sthalam. The great Tamil poet kamban was born here and currently the place is named as Kamban medu after him.Markandeya got moksha after worshipping the lord here.Legend says that King Uparisaravasu who had a Chariot to fly in sky, once due to his wrong decision, got cursed by Rishi's. He fell down with his Chariot at this place.His vehicle (Ther) landed at this sthala hence the name "Therazhundur".This place is also known as Krishnaranyam(krishna's forest).

During his Vamana Avatharam, Mahavishnu had asked for 3 steps of soil from king Mahabali.But Sukracharya(guru of asuras) trying to save king,became a bee and blocked the hole of kamandalam.Mahavishnu sensing the trick, pulled the bee with a straw which took one eye of sukra. Sukra worshipped lord at this sthalam and got back his eye.
