Radicalisation Of Indian Muslims -2
<b>13 top leaders of banned SIMI arrested</b>
Link

Thu, Mar 27 02:22 PM

In a major crackdown against the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), at least 13 of its top leaders including some state chiefs were arrested by Madhya Pradesh Police for being involved in weapons procurement and illegal financing of the outfit.

Among those arrested as part of a special police operation that began last night and was continuing today, were SIMI leader in Madhya Pradesh, Safdar Nagori and his brother and chief of the operations in Andhra Pradesh Kamruddin.

<b>The outfit's top leaders in Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were also nabbed</b>, police sources said, adding that intelligence agencies had been keeping tabs on the activities on the banned Islamist group here for quite sometime.

Describing the operation as a "big achievement for the police," Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said in Bhopal that "weapons and computers have been found.

Investigations are on into SIMI's plans to expand its network in the state...<b>This is a major achievement and SIMI's network will be eradicated</b>".

Namaste,

A petition has been reportedly filed<b> by a few Islam experts in Delhi
District Court to ban Satyarth Prakash </b>on grounds that it violates
Indian Penal Code and Fundamental rights by insulting religions in
Chapters 11 to 14. A notice has been sent to Saravdeshik, Gonvindram
Hasanand and few more parties for publishing this book which violates
constitutional rights. Hearing is scheduled on May 26.

I shall provide more details once I go through the petition myself.

To me this looks like not a matter restricted to those to whom notice
has been served, but for all those who consider Rishi Dayanand as a
role model. We need to unite together and fight this menace out.

Is not India anti-Muslim?(DR.ABDUL RUFF Colachal)

Is not India anti-Muslim?
-------------------------------

Globalization has been meticulously engineered so as to make the world dangerous for Muslims.Indian version of that degeneration has been unbearable for Muslims in the country. Any show of patriotism for money or other favors is ridiculous in principle as that displays hypocrisy. It has been the habit of Indian leaders, bureaucrats and media etc, to make Muslims feel apologetic and inferior to the majority population by resorting to convenient tactics like "patriotism", "Pakistan":cross-border-terrorism, and "Islamic terrorism" depending on the season. Of late there have been lot pseudo patriotic sentiments espoused in Indian media. Fully knowing that Muslims are badly hit from all directions, the media still harp on the so-called appeasement of Muslims by the rulers.

A big chunk of foreign Indians living a very comfortable life abroad tent to enjoy patriotic rhetoric just as the school children do with patriotic rhymes. They join the Indian government, its media and others to paint Indian Muslims in dirty colors and no one is bothered to set things going one-way right.Media have been given full rights to target Muslims as the "jai hindu" politicians shamelessly do. They decide what is patriotic and what is not, making the India news media very energetic in attacking and exposing Indian Muslims to attacks by anti-Islamic forces operating in the country. Muslims are already tormented with Indian terrorism rhetoric, for being less patriotic and more “terroristic”. In stead of imbibing money-based patriotism, these “patriots” could better associate themselves with real value-bases selfless patriotism. In terms of real patriotism, neither Indian politicians –cum-bureaucrats, nor media could pass even in third class. But they are very good at anti-Muslim and anti-Islamic in their writings and works, be it in politics or in administration. They thrive thanks to their skills in denouncing Islam and attacking Muslims.

What has been going on world-wide is an attempt by the governments to brand Muslims as terrorists and jail them for torture without court trails. Abdul Nasser Madani and Afzal are glaring examples of Indian attitude to Muslims. Unfortunately, the Constitution of 'democratic' India does not provide for punishment of governments when they commit crimes against individuals. State-sponsored terrorism has been thriving because of that. Though the verdict could be an indirect indictment on governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu as well as Central government for the wrongful confinement and mental torture of Abdul Madani, nothing could probably be done to punish the rulers and their associates. And Indian media cleverly diverted the attention of the plight of Madani and others in a country that is tilted against Muslim genuine interests.

It is known that the Muslims both bearded and clean-shaven are under serious threat in India. It fact Indian governments and their strong networks have made them literally on the run. It is said that India is a incredible country, may be because, the innocent Muslims are punished and terrorized in jails for decades without trials or any legal backing, while those anti-Islamic terrorists who attempted to murder Madani and others are still roaming about freely saying that it is their country and they are "patriots"! India is yet to seriously file cases against atrocities and murders committed against Muslims in the country. Those wanting the Muslims to be jailed forever should consider themselves in jails all alone just for 24 hours; they will know what life like in jails is.

The Indians comfortably living abroad both in Indian embassies and elsewhere think it their "patriotic duty" to trumpet about Indian greatness and "terrorist" Muslims living in India. There seems to be a valid point in Indian media not exposing the Indian authorities for supplying "explosive information" to Australia about Haneef being a "close associate" of the so-called al-Qaeda on the basis of the so-called intelligence reports that actually aided the Australian authorities to arrest and harass Haneef. The Indian media did underplay the government position in order to uphold the national “prestige” of aspiring India seeking to advance its special interests, and not as a primary journalistic duty for laying bare the facts before the people or their judgment, after all the voters also have to decide the future course of the nation. Later, however, like in films, both the government and media took credit for releasing Haneef from Australian jail and atrocities. But for the intervening of British intelligence, giving the Australian authroites critical evidence to prove innocence of Haneef, Haneef would have been in jail even now, being tortured endlessly.

Nearly for a decade the bearded Abdul Nasser Madani had been branded a terrorist though he did not supply weapon and counsel for the Coimbatore blast. It has become a practice in Tamil Nadu, in police stations, to insult a Muslim with a beard saying that he should also be sent to Coimbatore jail, meaning to shut him near Madani. In fact a bearded Muslim has been under serious threat not only in Tamil Nadu or Kerala but in the entire country. Judge K. Uthirapathy has indeed has delivered a bold verdict under circumstances that a Hindi film actor was convicted by Bombay Court and Madani could also be punished. May be the Haneef verdict might have assured the special judge of righteousness of the Madani case too. And the judge without budging the pressure groups delivered the bold verdict. Possibly, there could have been a lot pressure on the judge to deliver a verdict that does not tarnish the “national prestige” of “majority India”. The general preaching in India as in the West is that the Muslims are "terrorists", whereas Hindus and others are not, the verdict was expected to project this thesis of the anti-Islamic forces and in line with the “majority” sentiments. The judge has in fact revised the verdict given nearly ten years ago by the anti-Islamic forces in India against Madani after they failed to kill him in a blast at his place in Kerala (Madani lost his leg in an anti-Islamic terrorist attack). These forces now argue that the release of Madani could have terrific consequences for the country and say that Madani should either be jailed permanently or be killed. Now that he is declared innocent, all other petty, politically motivated cases registered against him in Kerala have to be just thrown into the dust-bin of the courts where the cases are pending.

Muslims in India should be grateful to Madani for his suffering for his active involvement in defending Muslims and Islam when a decade ago the anti-Islamic forces in Kerala and elsewhere were on the rampage threatening their very existence. Basically a religious priest, he floated in Islamic service Organization and, when it was outlawed by Indian government on pressure from opposite camp, he dismantled it to start a political outfit with help of Hindus. Then came the attempt to kill him and implicate him in 1998 Coimbatore blast. Clearly there has been a conspiracy against Madani and, unless he is cautious, he might yet again find himself in dark cells. Madani seems to be a clear threat to those politicians who depend on "Muslim vote bank" in Kerala for their own existence and welfare.

One does not know what has really happened in the story about Haneef in Australia, but the India Media took special care not to offend the sentiments of foreign Indians and hence did not reveal the whole truth about the hidden agenda behind Haneef's arrest and harassment. It needs no illustration about India ill-treating Muslims in India and abroad. When no Hindu leader could be jailed for nearly ten long years, Abdul Nasser Madani was tortured in Jails in Kerala and Tamil Nadu without trial and legal sanction. Since the attitude of Police and court toward Muslim is a foregone conclusion and the government think they can do anything and judges will “understand" the government's predicament and do “justice" in favor of the government. Some how Madan's life and torture were spared after nearly a decade when the Judge declared at long last that Madani and others are innocent and not involved in the so-called Coimbatore terrorist attack of 1998.This historic judgment came to be rude shock to the government, media, the " patriotic" foreign Indians and other "interested networking personnel. What they are not able to digest is the fact that Indian Muslims are not "terrorists". Considering the course of events about Haneef’s jail in Australia, it is apparent that Australia began witch-hunting on the request of Indian government by giving “evidence” of Haneef’s involvement in al-Qaeda activities. Then it goes without saying that India’s efforts to get Haneef’ release is high-drama enacted to boost the so-called ”patriotic” image of Indians, especially abroad.

This writer has written in details about how a Kashmiri Afzal was hooked by Indian government by playing with his freedom seeking sentiments and implicated in the so-called “parliament attack” and he was not delivered justice by keeping the frame of reference to the “records” supplied by the government side. The former President Kalam to whom the matter was referred for his “mercy” is still pending in the Rashtrpati Bhawan (RB), as Kalam was not allowed to interfere in the “Islamic terrorism” case.

Definitely, it isextremely difficult to distinguish between genuine “patriotism” from pseudo one currently displayed through Indian media. Whether or not the general masses would be allowed to see through the game plan of Indian governments and media, the truth about "terrorism" is out now and who is doing what. What intrigues most is the fact Indian Muslims, like world Muslims because of a strategy by the USA-led nations, have been systematically made feel apologetic about things with which they have no links. India governments-cum-media do it quite consciously in order to keep the Muslims out of resources gained from national development.

Torturing and killing of Muslims the world over under garb of “terrorism”, “threats” and “suspicions” have to stop. Indian parliament must immediately pass a law not to detain the Muslims without court sanction and without sufficient proof. And generally Muslims should not be detained in police custody for more than 24 hours (unless the court is on holiday) and within that time the “culprits” including the ‘terrorists” must be produced before the court of Justice for the settlement of the ‘suspicion’ case, Muslims cannot remain “suspected” for decades together as it has happened in the case of innocent Abdul Nasser Madani and many others.

Whether or not the general masses would be allowed to see through the game plan of Indian governments and media, the truth about "terrorism" is out now and who is doing what. The UK government got the release of its “terrorist” citizens in 2005, but none from the Middle East came forward to get justice for their own justice and the Arabs don’t think they are ashamed of their cowardice. The US detention camp at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba type torture camps without legal sanctions should be allowed to spread world wide. It is, however, still early to write about Indo-USA terrorism.

Like poison weed, it flourishes
With the latest arrest of seven more activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India from Unhel, near Ujjain, and Indore, the real dimension of the network established by this terrorist organisation in Madhya Pradesh has begun to emerge. Those arrested over Sunday night and Monday morning are believed to have been providing assistance to Safdar Nagori and 12 other top leaders of SIMI, who were picked up on March 27. It is anybody's guess as to how many more activists are out there and in other States, lying low or plotting the next strike against the state or innocent civilians. If initial reports are to be believed, Nagori and his associates were planning to attack senior BJP leaders. However, it is too early to arrive at any conclusion; we will get to know the full details of their plans only after investigations are over. In fact, the State police and Central agencies would be well-advised to desist from seeking media publicity by putting out stories or making tall claims. If the purpose is to crack down on SIMI cells and bust the organisation's underground network, then little or nothing should be said at this stage. For, what is at stake is national security, not the vanity of policemen and intelligence operatives who, in any case, have a lot to answer for. It is astonishing that despite being banned in 2001, SIMI should continue to exist in a clandestine manner, providing logistical support to home grown terrorists, without attracting the attention of law-enforcing agencies. It is also surprising that Nagori, who was virtually allowed to escape the police dragnet in 2001, has been avoiding detection for all these years. And, it is disturbing that Nagori should have found shelter in Indore, which is not an obscure village or an up-country sub-divisional town.

While the crackdown is a welcome initiative and those who tracked Nagori and his fellow activists to their hideout deserve to lauded, the event also provides an occasion to review measures that have been initiated over the past many years to fight radical Islamism in our country. The pro-active role played by the NDA Government has been replaced by the UPA Government's timid approach which borders on giving a free rein to fanatics affiliated to various Islamist organisations. Poor intelligence gathering, coupled with faulty investigation and slip-shod prosecution, has only made the situation worse. For instance, radical Islamists have succeeded in setting up multiple bases in Karnataka without any let or hindrance; using these bases, they have penetrated deep into the southern States, thus expanding the theatre of jihadi violence. To halt this dangerous trend we need political determination and conviction at the top -- tragically, both are lacking.

<b>Police suspects involvement of women in SIMI activities</b>

Indore, Apr 2 (PTI) With the arrest of top leaders of banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), the law enforcement agencies have now set their eyes on its women's wing 'Shaheen Force', a top police source said today.

Shaheen Force came into light after the recent arrest of five SIMI workers from Unhel town in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district.

Police has suspected the involvement of four women of the banned outfit in the activities of SIMI, but denied that any arrests have been made so far in this regard. <b>The activists of the Shaheen Force spread the outfit's ideology among the women living in the backward areas in the cities and later enrolled them as outfit members, the sources said.</b>

"There was nothing new in women joining the SIMI till the organisation was banned in 2001. However later it was effectively checked," sources added.

<b>Reports also suggested that the house in Shyam Nagar area where SIMI activists were holed up for a meeting was taken by its head Safdar Hussein Nagori with the help of a woman activist.</b><!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<b>City outfits adopt Simi</b>

Hyderabad, April 6: Former Students Islamic Movement of India (Simi) cadres are taking refuge with city-based Tahreek Tahafuz Shaer-e-Islam (TTSI) and Darsgah Jihad-o-Shahadat (DJS), police teams that went to Madhya Pradesh to interrogate some activists have discovered. On March 26, joint teams of Intelligence Bureau and Special Task Force arrested 13 Simi activists from Pithampur in MP. These activists were interrogated by the city police teams.

Simi was active in the city but the police remained oblivious of their activities. “The recruitment and training modules of Simi have changed drastically. The MP operation brought these things to the fore,” the official said. Police found that three activists, Safdar Nagori, Qamruddin Nagori and Adnan, arrested in MP, had frequently visited Hyderabad. “The trio reveres Abdul Aleem Islahi, the father of Mohtisam Billa,” a senior police official told this correspondent.

Billa was arrested for his links with Simi and other terror elements. “The trio regularly visited the Islahi family and Moulana Naseeruddin in the city,” said the official. “What shocked us was the way these families provided logistics for Simi cadres,” he added. Islahi runs a madarasa in Saidabad while Moulana Naseeruddin is lodged in the Sabarmati jail in Gujarat for alleged conspiracy in the Haren Pandya murder case. Moulana Naseeruddin is also the founder of TTSI. “Simi cadres have joined the TTSI and DJS to carry out their activities,” the official said. “In fact, TTSI and DJS are acting like the Simi.” They claimed to have got leads from the MP arrests on last year’s twin blasts. Police is working on these leads.

<b>Tripura minister Sahid Chowdhury's links with Bangladeshi arms dealer being probed</b>

Apr 11 2008

<b>Agartala - The Tripura police have ordered an inquiry into links between state Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sahid Chowdhury and a Bangladeshi arms dealer, officials said here Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal and Tripura arrested Bangladeshi national Mamun Mian alias Suman Majumdar from a house at Ramnagar, on the outskirts of Tripura's capital Agartala last month, for his involvement in anti-Indian activities and trafficking in arms and explosives.</b>

'Police (special branch) officials have started an inquiry to uncover the details about Mamun Mia and also who helped him to stay in Tripura illegally,' said Director General of Police K.T.D. Singh.

After the inquiry report of the police (special branch) is received, action would be taken against all those involved in the crime, Singh said.

Opposition parties have demanded removal of the minister from the state cabinet for his alleged links with the Bangladeshi arms trafficker.

<b>'The minister helped Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan agent Mamun Mia in getting permanent residential certificate (PRC) from the state government and the Indian passport,</b>' opposition leader Ratan Lal Nath said in a letter to Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.

'For the security of the state and nation, the minister should be removed from the cabinet,' Nath said in his letter, released to the media.

<b>'The West Bengal police earlier this year nabbed two Bangladeshi nationals, Shamim Akhtar and Alamgir Hussain, in Kolkata with several incriminating documents pertaining to maps and details of army camps in north Bengal areas. A case was also registered against them,' DGP said.

'During their interrogation, Shamim and Alamgir revealed to the West Bengal CID officials that they had entered India last year and one of their associates, Mamun Mian, was hiding in Agartala city.'</b>

The issue has rocked the state during the past two weeks.

Reacting to the media reports over the reported nexus between the minister and Mamun, the Communist Party of India-Marxist Central Committee member Bijon Dhar said: 'Before completion of the police inquiry, we would not say anything now on the issue.'<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Unravelling Terror
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Fri, Apr 18 01:25 AM

<b>The police swoop that took out several key leaders of the Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) last month might also have aborted the birth of a Hamas-style terrorist squad under the aegis of the banned extremist organisation. </b>SIMI's national secretary general Safdar Hussein Nagori, his brother Qamruddin Nagori and close aide Aamil Parwez revealed during recent narco tests that they were <b>in the process of raising their own armed squads to reduce dependence on operatives sent from Pakistan.</b>

<b>The three men, along with 10 others picked up in Indore on March 26, make up "90 per cent of the top leadership of SIMI's pro-jehad radical faction," </b>intelligence sources said. They were put through narco-analysis at the Forensic Science Laboratory in Bangalore.

IGP Indore Range Anil Kumar refused to reveal details of the results, but confirmed Nagori and his comrades had revealed plans for an armed squad. "Nagori told us that SIMI's current focus is only on building an armed squad to execute terrorist attacks and operations.

It is a departure from its practice till now of sending its men to Pakistan for terrorist training" Kumar told HT. A top IB sleuth said Nagori had told his interrogators that a decision to set up combat training bases was taken at a secret meeting in Ujjain a few weeks before the 11/7 train bombings in Mumbai.

"It was decided to set up a training base near Indore to raise an armed squad. <b>The outfit had considered setting up the base somewhere along the Naxal Red Corridor </b>from Andhra Pradesh to Jharkhand, but abandoned the idea fearing detection by the police," the officer said.

Sources said SIMI wants to emulate Hamas's armed wing, Izz Al-Din Al-Qassim Brigades. <b>Sheikh Yassin Ahmed, who set it up in 1987, was allegedly one of Nagori's contacts</b>.

<b>Simi cells active in Maha interiors </b>

Mumbai, April 17: The anti-terrorist squad (ATS) of the Maharashtra police suspects that <b>six sleeper cells of "ansars," or helpers of the banned Students’ Islamic Movement of India (Simi), have quietly become operational in the interiors of the state and are waiting to act on command.</b> The police claimed that these sleeper cells had fled to the interior regions of the state because of the ATS’ operations in urban areas.

While the police refused to reveal where these cells could be located, sources said <b>predominantly Muslim localities in Malegaon, Aurangabad, and Bhiwandi were being combed</b>. "They are certainly trying to build their network in Maharashtra by motivating people from the interiors as they think they are not under our vigilance," said the ATS joint commissioner of police, Mr Hemant Karkare. <b>Another senior ATS official said there are between 50 and 60 ansars in Maharashtra alone.</b>

LeT saw attacks as model operation; ATS probing Nagori’s role in bombings

LUCKNOW

<b>A Lashkar-e-Taiba operative, arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police in February, has provided investigators with new insights into the command-level architecture of the 2006 Mumbai serial bombings that claimed 209 lives.</b>

Sabahuddin Ahmed told the interrogators that the bombings were executed under the command of Mohammad Yusuf, code-named “Muzammil,” who controls the Lashkar’s military operations outside Jammu and Kashmir. Lashkar’s overall military chief Mohammad Azam Cheema supervised the operation.

Ahmed’s testimony corroborates the findings of the Mumbai Police, which said the bombings were executed by Pakistani Lashkar operatives with assistance from members of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). By Ahmed’s account, <b>the Lashkar saw the Mumbai attacks as a model operation, since Indian investigators were unable to link its perpetrators to Pakistan.</b>

While several Indians — including Mumbai residents Mohammad Faisal Sheikh, his brother Muzammil Rehman Sheikh and former SIMI Maharashtra general-secretary Ehtesham Siddiqui — are now being tried for their alleged role in the city’s suburban train system, none of the Pakistani perpetrators could be arrested or conclusively identified.

Sabahuddin, who commanded the Lashkar cell that attacked the Indian Institute of Science and a Central Reserve Police Force camp in 2007, worked at the Lashkar’s central offices during 2006-2007. He later became the first—and so far, only—Indian known to have commanded a Lashkar cell involving Pakistani nationals.

<b>Mumbai’s Anti-Terrorism Squad is also investigating the possible role of the SIMI’s former general-secretary, Safdar Nagori, in the Mumbai bombings. He was held at Indore last month along with 13 other SIMI leaders who were involved in recruiting and training new cadre for the Lashkar-led jihad at camps across southern, central and western India.</b>

Questioned after being administered hypnosis-inducing drugs, Nagori said he was present in Mumbai at the time of the bombings—suggesting a possible link between the SIMI’s leadership and the terror strikes. He was known to have participated in a meeting at Ujjain a week before the bombings, where the SIMI discussed plans to escalate the jihad.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

The Tripura government has ordered a CID inquiry into the possible nexus between bangladeshi arms dealer Mamun Mia and Tripura minister Sahid Chowdhury who resigned as the state Food and Minority Affairs minister on Thursday, official sources said today.

A five-member CID team, headed by DSP Priya Lal Majumder, would also interact with West Bengal CID, which provided the the information about Mia and seek information about the present status of investigation in the neighbouring state.

The CID would also investigate how the bangladeshi national, who is a member of the Harkat-ul-Jihadi-Islami, could live in India without a valid passport and obtain a permanent resident certificate in Tripura, the sources said. A team of CID personnel of West Bengal and Tripura police arrested Mia from a house at Ramnagar area here on March 28.

He was flown to Kolkata the next day on transit remand.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<b>Radical Muslim student network SIMI has an ally in Hyderabad</b>
Link
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->19/4/2008

The banned Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), which intelligence agencies believe has created the country’s first home-grown terror network, cooperates closely with a radical but legitimate Hyderabad-based Islamic organisation called the Darsgah Jihad-o-Shahadat, going by the confession of Amil Parvez. The police believe Parvez is a top SIMI activist; he was arrested on March 27, along with 13 others.

The interrogation statement, a copy of which Hindustan Times has procured, states that Darsgah president Shaikh Mahboob Ali had invited him for martial arts training in Hyderabad.

“It is the tip of the iceberg,” said a police official, referring to the student group’s ties with other militant groups. “It indicates that SIMI has managed to build a wide network through front organisations across India.”

But he added that police from various states were still investigating the activities of organisations like Darsgah, and were not yet in a position to provide evidence of their links with the radical student organisation.

When Maulana Naseeruddin, an accused in the murder of former Gujarat minister Haren Pandya, was arrested, Darsgah activists pelted stones and tried to forcibly take away Naseeruddin from the police van.

Darsgah activist Mujahid Saleem Islahi was killed after police opened fire to disburse the mob.

B Prasad Rao, Hyderabad police commissioner said: “We are aware of this organisation. It is possible that some ex-SIMI members are part of it. But SIMI activists are not active at the moment. It would be speculative to comment on Darsgah without evidence.”

When asked to respond to Parvez’s confession, Darsgah president Sheikh Mahboob Ali, said: “We have 10 to 12 centres across India, but we do not keep a record of who trains there. It can be anybody. Our aim is to teach self-defence to Muslim youths.” But when asked explicitly whether Darsgah cooperated with SIMI, he declined comment.

On its website, www.djsindia.org, Darsgah states that it “is an independent organisation. It has no affiliation with any other organisation.” But it also says that those it trains have a “right to join any Muslim group… As a result, they are serving all Muslim groups…” The website also carries a photograph of a young child holding up a placard stating, “The Quran will be the Constitution of India, and I will be the soldier."

In the last 21 years, it has trained and continues to train thousands of youths to defend themselves and to help, protect and defend other Muslim brethren. And since the last 10 years, the organisation has been conducting short-term courses in self-defence for Muslim girls and women in Hyderabad. But what has caught investigators eyes is Darsgah’s statement that they have been conducting special training for selected Muslim youths twice a year in suburban or outlying areas, the website further states.

Parvez also said that two training camps were held in 2007, one each in Madhya Pradesh and Kerala. Those who attended underwent a gruelling regimen that included swimming, trekking, rock climbing and lessons on how to use airguns, pistols and petrol bombs. Safdar and Kamruddin, who supervised the training, told Parvez that the camps were just primary and that the cream among the lot would be sent abroad for further training.

Parvez’s confession also alludes to possible international links. For instance, it says that Palestinian Sheikh Siam, who the police believe is an activist of the 20-year-old radical Hamas, which is in a majority in the Palestinian legislative council, attended a meeting in Aligarh in 1997. Parvez, too, attended this meeting, which was chaired by SIMI’s then president Shahid Badr Falahi, the confession stated.

Parvez’s confession also described in detail how SIMI regrouped after the government banned it in 2001. Parvez credited Safdar Nagori, a fellow activist also arrested on March 27, and a man named Noman Badr with resurrecting SIMI after many of its members went into hiding or quit. On April 17, the Hindustan Times published an interview with Nagori’s father, a retired policeman, who said he was deeply pained by his son’s association with the student group.

“We should not allow the movement to collapse, and should maintain our network by operating clandestinely,” Nagori apparently told Parvez. “We are doing all we can to lift the ban.”<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
