Radicalisation Of Indian Muslims -2
Mudy ji please dont get confused about the situation in goa and the terror threat.

Whatever the political situation may be in goa it does not concern this terror case since these arrested terrorists who are from HuJI were previously involved in the Hyderabad blasts and had planned blasts in goa and as well as karnataka.

In Karnataka the targets were Kaiga Nuclear power generation plants, Udupi SriKrishna Temple, Siddharooda Mutt(Famous and Important religious place for veerashaivas), Hubli airport and one of the hydel power generating station in Northern part of karnataka.

There are many accomplices of these terrorists who are still at large and you wont believe the large scale hunt that is being conducted to get these people. There are policemen searching every hotel, lodges, inter-state buses, train station and every mode of transport that could help these terrorist get out of North karnataka.

More info will come out after the narco analysis, brain mapping tests are finished on the 2 terrorists.
QUOTE(Harshvardan @ Feb 8 2008, 01:56 AM)Latest news regarding the arrest of terrorists in karnataka.

Between 40-70 students of KIMS(Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences) Hubli are reportedly missing. These students are reported to be the accomplices of the naser and abubaker and conducted an clandestine meeting in their hostel room some months before he was eventually arrested. The matter was reported to the Institute director at that time but he tried to hush it up to save the college's reputation without caring about the consequences.

Now since CoD is investigating this matter and police teams from other states are camping in bangalore slowly the whole truth about the planned terror attacks is coming to light.

JIHAD IN TAMIL NADU – MORE TO IT THAN MEETS THE EYE!

Today (9th February 2008), The New Indian Express has reported a news on its front page titled "Blast plot charge on five Kovai men found false", which is of utmost concern to all the right thinking and peace loving citizens of our country. These five men belonging to a Muslim radical organization called MNP were arrested on the 22nd of July 2006 on charges of plotting a serial bomb blast in Coimbatore. Now, the CB-CID Police say that these men were arrested on false charges, but interestingly they have not come out with other facts on why the Coimbatore police foisted false charges and on whose instructions or influence they did so? It was also not reported in the media as to when this case was handed over to the CB-CID. To understand the 'concern' and the 'gravity' of the situation, we need to analyse the gradual growth of Muslim Fundamentalism in Tamil Nadu.

The last two decades of Tamil Nadu's history would reveal the clandestine growth of Jihadi elements in the state. It is a known fact that the Students Islamic Movement of India, SIMI, was very active in many states across the country. After a ban was enforced on SIMI, the TN unit took the avatars of Al Umma & Jihad Committee. While the Coimbatore based Al Umma made its first major strike at the RSS HQs, Chennai, in November 1993 killing 11 Swayam Sevaks, the Jihad Committee disintegrated after the murder of its leader Palani Baba allegedly by Hindu youths. The TMMK (Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam) was launched in 1995 with a political colour to be deliberately different from Al Umma, which was an obviously violent organization. The TMMK gave a political colour to Islamic fundamentalism and it was a brain child of Hyder Ali, who came out of Al Umma after a tiff with his friend Basha, President of Al Umma. Hyder Ali was alleged to be a former associate of Palani Baba of Jihad Committee and now he acts as the General Secretary of the party. It can be recalled that very recently he issued a public threat (Modi will not go back alive!) against the Gujarat Chief Minister when he visited Chennai recently to attend the Anniversary Meeting of the weekly magazine "Thuglak" run by Sri. Cho.Ramaswamy.

The MNP is alleged to be the same old organization "Al Umma", which changed its name as "Manitha Neethi Paasarai" (MNP) after Al Umma was banned for its execution of Coimbatore serial blasts, during DMK regime, on 14th February 1998, which took the lives of 60 innocent Tamil Hindus. The arrest of five MNP cadres with incriminating documents and a pipe bomb on July 22, 2006 was extensively reported in both English and vernacular media. It was reported that they were plotting for a serial bomb blasts similar to the one which was executed in 1998.

Subsequently the 'Indian Express' dated 26th July 2006, carried a detailed analytical report written by Ms. Jaya Menon, on the activities of MNP indulging in 'conversion' and conducting classes in the name of 'Arivagam' to brain wash new converts especially scheduled castes to train & recruit them in to Jihadi squads. The MNP is reportedly active in Theni and Coimbatore districts, which are close to Kerala borders, so that they can get connected with the Kerala based extremist organisation NDF easily, for plotting terror activities. After this, there was no noise about MNP in the media circles, though their activities were allegedly going on clandestinely.

Later, The New Indian Express dated17th February 2007 had reported as follows: -

"The 'Q' branch of the state police is now concerned about the formation of a new Islamic outfit, "Popular Front of India" (PFI), a coordinated effort between three organizations – Karnataka For Dignity (KFD), Karnataka, Manitha Neethi Pasarai (MNP), Tamil Nadu, and National Development Front (NDF), Kerala. The new organization was launched on Friday (16th February) in Bangalore, 'to coordinate & strengthen grass root level developmental activities through out the country' followed by an 'Empower India' conference in the garden city. Though the organization's agenda has been well spelt out – democracy & social justice, the state police fear that the organization had been set up to propagate hardliner ideology. A 'Q' branch official had said, "What is worrying us is the fact that a majority of the leaders of this new front belonged to the now banned SIMI". The decision to launch Popular Front of India (PFI) has been taken at a conference of KFD, MNP & NDF held on 22nd November 2006 at Calicut. The leaders of PFI include, K.M.Shareef, President of KFD, Gulam Muhammed, leader of MNP and Abdur Rahman Baqari of NDF and they have decided to confine their activities to South India".

A close look at the "choice" of words in their nomenclatures, would tell us how cleverly they are playing their duplicitous game! The soft & gentle words such as Dignity, National, Development, Manitham (Humanity), Neethi (Justice), Popular and Munnetram (Improvement or forwarding), have replaced hard-line & fundamental words such as Jihad and other Arabic or Urdu words. They also claim that they work for Democracy, Social Justice and Development!

TMMK, which was lying low during the AIADMK rule between 2001 and 2006, struck an electoral alliance with DMK and started its activities with full force, the moment the DMK formed the government. It must be noted that, half a dozen cadres of Al Umma were released suddenly from Palayamkottai prison in May 2006, within days of the present DMK government taking charge. Even during last year's Ganesh Chathurthi Festivals and Visarjanam (immersion) processions, the TMMK created a lot of hurdles in many places. The worst incidents occurred in Thammampatti near Attur in Salem district, where hundreds of innocent Tamil Hindus were arrested on false charges and it was also alleged that the state police committed human rights violations against the arrested Hindus.

Like Theni and Coimbatore, Tenkasi, close to the famous tourist hill resort Courtallam, is also close to Kerala border and TMMK attempted to develop this town also for its nefarious activities. An old issue between the two communities came in handy for the outfit to create a communal divide. Tenkasi is a small town with 80% of Hindus and 20% of Muslims and out of 35 wards 8 wards are totally dominated by Muslims. The main advantage for the Muslim community is that all the trading of essential commodities such as vegetables, groceries, medicines, eatables (Hotels), textiles and even electrical components is dominated by Muslims and the unfortunate Hindu majority has to depend on them. The small town is also a seat for a lot of Islamic Institutions such as Arabic Schools, Madarasas, Mosques and Darghas. The unrest between the two communities date back to 1925 as told by Sri.Sorna Thevar, the father of slain Hindu Munnani leader Kumar Pandian and a loyal "Congress" man.

The TMMK attempted to construct a Mosque on the land in a street directly opposite to the famous Kashi Viswanathar Temple and the concerned site is a property belonging to the Temple. Naturally enraged by the act of TMMK trying to construct a Mosque on a Temple land, Hindu Munnani leader Kumar Pandian objected to it and the TMMK cadres murdered him on the 17th of December 2006. Since then the town has witnessed repeated clashes and six murders (three Muslims and three Hindus, who are Kumar Pandian's brothers) were committed on 14th of August 2007 and a blast occurred at Tenkasi RSS office and in an auto-rickshaw parked inside the new bus-stand on 24th January 2008. Surprisingly, the special police team has arrested Ravi Pandian, last brother of slain Hindu Munnani leader Kumar Pandian & three others, along with two other Hindu youths. One wonders why "Hindu" youths should bomb "RSS" office! The country has never come across Hindu youths or Sangh cadres connected to bomb culture, which is a monopoly of Jihadis. Any new person visiting Tenkasi could certainly feel the uneasy calm and a sense of fear looming largely over the Hindu majority town.

Subsequently this arrest was welcomed by TMMK and Mr. Jawahirullah, President of TMMK had posted an article http://www.twocircl es.net/2008feb05 /sangh_parivar_ activists_ arrested_ blasts_rss_ office.html - praising the TN police for arresting the Hindu youth, in a Muslim website called www.twocircles. net on the 5th of February.

The TMMK is a very influential party with the present DMK government and there seems to be an alleged 'pattern' in the way the police is handling the crimes, in which Muslim extremist organizations like TMMK, MNP and Al Umma are involved. TMMK strikes an electoral alliance with DMK. Immediately after taking charge, the government issues an order for the release of half a dozen Al Umma activists from Palayam Kottai prison. TMMK president Jawahirullah in an interview in SUN TV ('Nerukku Ner' – 'One on One' program) immediately after the formation of DMK government, requests for the release of Coimbatore blasts accused. The government arranges an Ayurvedic Spa for the treatment of dreaded terrorist Abdul Madhani in Kovai Prison and he was subsequently acquitted. Hundreds of innocent Tamil-Hindus were arrested allegedly on false charges in Thampmampatti over the problems created by TMMK cadres against Ganesh Chathurthi festival celebrations. The only bread winner of a big family Ravi Pandian and two other Tamil-Hindus were arrested for a bomb blast in Tenkasi RS office. Lastly five MNP cadres were exonerated from charges of plotting serial bomb blasts. So, there seems to be more to it than meets the eye!

Hubli is SIMI’s hub of activities

QUOTEBANGALORE: The Karnataka police, who are investigating a terror module that was recently busted by the Davanagere police have woken up to the startling fact that the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) had spread its network across the State and Hubli was the hub of its activities.Investigations by the police revealed that despite the ban imposed on SIMI in 2001 for its links with terrorist outfits, the organisation has been active in Karnataka. An all-India office-bearer of SIMI, Adnan of Bijapur, has played a vital role in the organisation gaining ground in the State, particularly north Karnataka. Hubli was the meeting point for these activists, sources in the investigation team told The Hindu on Saturday.

Naser and Abubakkar were arrested on charges of two-wheeler theft in Davanagere district on January 5. But their incoherent statements prompted the Magistrate to remand them in police custody for further interrogation.
Latest development in the foiled terror attack in goa, kar and AP by KIMS medical students.

Two persons, Mirza beg and Allah Buksh, were arrested today. Both are said to be doctors.

One of them is suspected of using the high-speed internet connection available in the Central library of the KIMS college to contact his terror handlers in pakistan.

Both are being interrogated at an secret place by joint team of CoD and central agencies and the info obtained is being passed onto other state police as some of the other members of the terror cell are still in hiding.

More than 15 muslim students of KIMS are suspected of being involved in the terror cell, most of them are out-station students from different parts of karnataka.

An house owned by an muslim (some call it a sufi shrine others are saying it is just an house which was converted as an shrine to provide cover to the terror cell) was used as an meeting place by the terrorists. The house is located in an village near an forest and therefore the numerous meetings these terrorists held in the house did not come to the notice of the locals or the police.

Wide spread anger in the area, locals are asking for the house to be demolished.
Guilty of treason

February 5, 2008.

For the first time, Islamists picked up in Uttar Pradesh have been
successfully prosecuted in a fast track court. Five fanatics, including
one from West Bengal, who had conspired to carry out bombings in
Lucknow, have been sentenced to life imprisonment for waging war against
the state

On a windy winter morning at a shabby Lucknow court room, additional
district judge Dharam Raj did his bit to take the wind out of the
ever-growing terror network's sails in Uttar Pradesh.

On January 23, he scripted life sentences to five fanatical Indian
Muslims aligned to a Bangldesh-based Islamist group for waging war
against the state in the name of jihad. The otherwise routine conviction
is sure to spur judges to take a firm stand against agents and agencies
working overtime against the country.

The five youth -- four from Uttar Pradesh and another from West
Bengal -- were members of Lashkar-e-Tayyeba's offshoot
Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami and were arrested by Special Task Force sleuths
from Shaheed Path in Lucknow on the eve of Ram Navami on April 5, 2006,
with a huge cache of arms and ammunition. Their sinister plan included
the bombing of temples to fan communal passion that could have resulted
in retaliatory violence.

The country's most populous State has been in national focus for all the
wrong reasons most of the times. As if organised crime, kidnapping as an
industry, the politician-criminal-police nexus and dacoit gangs were not
enough, Lucknow moved into jihad's radar when a massive blast claimed
several lives at Charbagh railway station in January, 1993.

Thereafter, owing to conditions that were -- and remain -- conducive to
the growth of radical Islamism, fanatical groups and their conduits have
used Lucknow as a safe transit point. In the process, several operatives
of Islamic terror groups Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Tayyeba,
Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and the likes were arrested from time to time.

But while the law-enforcing agencies did a commendable job in the field,
their paper work was abysmally shoddy. The performance of the
prosecution was even worse. Despite there being clinching evidence --
for instance, of deadly explosives like RDX and grenades, and weapons
like Kalashnikov rifles -- the prosecution has abjectly failed in making
the charge of waging war against the state stick on the accused. As a
result, fast track courts hearing cases of these hardcore Islamic
militants only handed out sentences for carrying illegal arms and
ammunition and resisting arrest by the police, but not for treason.

When the case involving the five activists of HuJI came up for trial,
the common refrain was not very encouraging. But the entire process has
been an epoch-making deviation from the past.

The youth, identified as Mehboob Alam Mondol of 24-Parganas (West
Bengal), Mohammed Rizwan Ahmad and Mohammed Shaad of Amroha (Uttar
Pradesh), Syed Shoaib Hassan of Aligarh and Farhan Ahmad Khan of
Lucknow, crossed over to Bangladesh and then travelled to Pakistan on
fake passports where they underwent a rigorous 28-day crash training in
the use of arms and explosives. After picking up jihadi skills, they
returned to India to indulge in subversive activities, but ran out of
luck.

Interestingly, all the accused, as per their counsel, did not have any
criminal background and one was even a teacher. This is a pointer as to
how pan-Islamism is being used to rouse the religious passion of
individuals who have otherwise not participated in any violent activity.

After a not-so-long trial, during which the prosecution presented 63
evidences, including personal depositions and exhibits, the sentence was
pronounced on January 23. Highlighting the "humble and clean background"
of the accused, the defence pleaded that since they were first time
offenders, they be sympathetically treated and given light sentences.

Judge Dharam Raj, however, was in no mood to relent. Maintaining that
since they had assembled at one place to carry out bombings to fan
communal passion and violence ahead of Ram Navami, the nature of the
crime was grave and they could not be let off lightly. The judge felt
that the success of their evil mission would have meant large-scale
devastation in Lucknow and a sharp divide along religious lines between
the two communities. The judge further observed that it was deemed
necessary to hand out stringent punishment to meet the ends of justice.
The sentence was indeed severe.

All five were handed out life term for conspiring and waging war against
the state. Besides, they were sentenced to 31 years in prison for
whipping up communal frenzy and four other sections pertaining to
sedition and unlawful assembly. For being in possession of arms,
ammunitions and explosives, the men were handed out terms between three
and five years and slapped fines. All sentences are to run concurrently.

The judgment assumes importance and is epoch-making in the sense that in
earlier cases of terror links being caught and tried, all of them got
away with lighter sentences instead of the charge of war against the
state.

Two recent cases in point are LeT operatives Masood and Rasheed. The two
men were arrested with four kg of RDX and detonators from Lucknow
Cantonment on May 21, 2005. While Masood was never convicted, Rasheed
got away with a minor sentence for carrying illegal weapons.

On August 13 last year, two other LeT agents, Altaf and Saleem, were
picked up and charged with treason, carrying explosives and resisting
arrest. Both were sentenced by a lower court, but only for carrying
illegal weapons as the treason charge could not be proved.

Ironically, besides the weak follow-up during the trial, the State
Government did not even bother to appeal against the lower court order
in the High Court for pressing the charge of treason.

Hailing the judgement, DIG (Lucknow range) Chandra Prakash said, "This
is indeed a landmark judgement and should serve as a deterrent for youth
with hardcore leanings. At the same time, the police and prosecution
should work harder to ensure more such convictions and thwart the evil
designs of terror outfits
Today's developments in the KIMS terror cell case.

One of the terrorist had recced the Carriage Repair Shop situated at gadag road in hubli. Most of the employees working here are from tamil nadu and AP. The workers in the shop work in 2 shifts and shift change occurs between 2:30-3:30. The plan was to target the workers at this time to cause maximum casaulities.

The reason for choosing this place as the target was to create an impression that the place was targetted by local kannadigas rather than muslim terrorists. The terrorists hoped this would spark off clashes between kannadigas, tamils and andhraties.

The terrorists are following in Deendar Anjuman's footsteps of attacking their targets and putting the blame on others. Deendar had bombed churches in hubli and several other places in kar and while leaving the churches had thrown printed pamplets of rss claiming the attacks on the churches. Later investigations exposed the role of deendar and it was banned and it's leader had escaped to pakistan.

Please inform your friends, family and people from your respective states about the new terrorist modus operandi. They are aiming to spark inter-state clashes.

HINDU FAILURE TO UNDERSTAND ISLAM

In an article in Young India dated May 29, 1924, Mahatma Gandhi had himself noted that my own experience confirms that the Mussalman as a rule is a bully. Only he did not trace this Muslim behaviour pattern to the tenets of Islam which continued to be a noble faith for him till he himself was consumed by the flames ignited by this faith. But the Mahatma was neither the first nor the last Hindu to commit this mistake about Islam. Hindu society has been a wilful victim of this folly ever since Islam arrived India on the shoulders of Arab armies in the second half of the 7th century AD.

This imperialist ideology of terrorism has been in India for the last thirteen centuries and more. But with the exception of Swami Dayananda and the Arya Samaj, no Hindu thinker or organization has made a serious or systematic study of its mind or methods. The Hindu response to Islam has invariably been a series of slogans - Ram and Rahim are one and the same, Allah and Ishwar describe the same Supreme Power, Kashi and Kaabah are equally holy, the mosque is a variation of the mandir even when the former has been built on the site and with the debris of the latter, namãz is another name for upãsanã (worship), in short, Islam is as good as Sanãtana Dharma.

What is worse, Hindu society has fallen into an inveterate habit of white-washing and wishing away the dark deeds of Islam by dressing them up in Hindu verbiage. Hindus never allow the spokesmen of Islam to speak for themselves. Instead, they interpret Islam in terms of the Indian spiritual traditions, and try their utmost to force this diabolical creed into divine moulds. And they flaunt this habit as a sine qua non of their liberalism and large-heartedness, their capacity to digest and transform into nector even the most potent poison.

Hindu society has never paused to find out how Islamic theologians respond to its cherished slogans and sentiments. It has always been in a hurry to sell some patent prescriptions like sarva-dharma-samabhãva so that the slogans may be put into practice unilaterally. That is why all Hindu slogans have so far fallen on deaf ears, or have invited contempt from the Muslims who know their Dîn A to Z. That is why all Hindu prescriptions have proved to be costly mistakes. That is why a great Hindu like Mahatma Gandhi who succeeded against all other odds, ended as a total and tragic failure when it came to the followers of Islam.

We blamed the British for Hindu-Muslim conflict so long as the British controlled this country. Then we lulled ourselves into the fond belief that the communal problem had been finally solved by the Partition in 1947, and that we could settle down to solving the problems of poverty and social injustice. But the belief has been shattered by the increasing frequency of riots staged by Muslim hooligans. And the British are no more there to take the blame except for those morons who will continue to explain in terms of British machinations everything that goes wrong in India till the end of time.

IT IS ISLAM THAT SEPARATES THE MUSLIMS FROM THE HINDUS

The Muslims in India are, by and large, the same people as the Hindus, except for a microscopic minority which takes pride in its descent from foreign forefathers. The Muslims in India share a lot with the Hindus in such externalia as race, language, dress, mores and manners. What is it, then, which divides the Muslims from the Hindus and sets them as a people apart? A correct answer to this question will go a long way in putting the problem in its proper perspective.

The answer is obvious as well as inescapable, unless we fall victim to the Marxist metaphysics according to which the Hindus are the haves and the Muslims the have-nots, and the conflict between the two is a disguised form of class conflict. There should be no doubt that it is Islam which divides the Muslims from the Hindus. Hindus would have to understand Islam if they want to understand Muslim Separatism, and thus rise to the challenge with an adequate response.

Reject Sachar panel report: experts

Special Correspondent

‘In Karnataka, Muslim population has grown by 194 per cent, general population by 124 per cent’

Figures are based on the National Family Health Survey, which commenced in 1961

BANGALORE: “The Rajendra Sachar Committee report has been modelled on the Hunter Committee report of 1871, which was designed to divide India on the basis of religion by the British. The Sachar Committee report will again divide India should it be allowed to be implemented,” said experts, who took part in a seminar on the report here on Sunday.

The seminar was organised jointly by the Centre for Educational and Social Studies and Mythic Society of Bangalore on the theme “The content and implications of the Rajendra Sachar Committee Report.” The panel of speakers included Rakesh Sinha, reader of Political Science Department of Delhi University; Prakash Belawadi, theatre director; S.C. Jayachandra, president of the Karnataka SC/ST Backlog Engineers’ Association; and Anwar Manippady, former chairman of Karnataka State Minorities Commission. The former judge of the Karnataka High Court, Jagannatha Shetty, presided.

Dr. Sinha said the “Sachar Committee report was aimed at creating a conducive atmosphere for certain political parties to muster political support” and termed it as an instrument for communalising politics. Quoting the National Family Health Survey, Dr. Sinha said that the Muslim community had shown prolific growth in population. Basing 1961 as the year of commencement of the survey, Delhi had shown 944 per cent growth while in Haryana it was 324 per cent. All India figures showed that the Muslim population had grown by 194 percent while the general population had grown by 120 per cent.

In Karnataka, the Muslim population has grown by 194 per cent and the general population by 124 percent and it obviously meant that the Muslim community was thriving, despite the so-called economic backwardness as pointed out by the report. Political parties perhaps were trying to erode the Indian nationality and wanted to raise a religion-based nationality by promoting the Sachar Committee report, Dr. Sinha said. Mr. Manippady also gave a call to reject the Sachar Committee report, saying that the Government should instead institute another survey which should be more ‘inclusive’ particularly those sections of society that are economically backward. By restricting the survey to a certain religious group, the Government would only divide the nation into hostile camps trying to vest Government empathy. “This was a convenient political ploy to keep the vote bank intact in the future,” he added.

Mr. Justice Jagannath Shetty questioned the validity of the commission report. There has to be a healthy discussion in Parliament to give credence to the Sachar Committee Report, which has not happened.

Sunday, February 24, 2008

BANGALORE: An ongoing probe by the Corps of Detectives (COD) into terror networks in parts of Karnataka has revealed that a techie arrested here recently had been providing technical support to extremists, police said.

Mohammad Yahya Kammakutty, who hails from Kozhikode in Kerala and was arrested on February 21, was actively involved with a fundamentalist outfit in his home state, they said.

An electrical engineering degree holder and former employee with GE, Yahya, joined the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) after he shifted to Bangalore eight years ago, the investigators found.

Yahya was transferring funds, weapons and other support to terrorists across the country, but sources from where he used to get them remained to be ascertained, police said.

The arrest of terror suspects like Yahya, Riyazuddin Naser, Asadullah Abubakkar and Mohammed Asif has led the police to believe that parts of Karnataka, including Bangalore, were home to "sleeper cells" run by terror groups.

Yahya had even provided shelter to some terrorists who were guided to him to receive money and weapons, police said.

He was also arranging identity cards, ration cards and other documents to terrorists, investigations have revealed, police said.

However, police were yet to get evidence whether Yahya had plans to undertake terror activities in the state, including in Bangalore.

Police said Naser alias Mohammed Ghous came in contact with terror groups after his father was arrested by Gujarat police in connection with the state's minister Haren Pandya's murder.

There are several SIMI activists in the state, particularly in parts of Hubli, Dharwad, Bijapur and Hospet.

Meanwhile, police has not been able to gather much information about the terror links of Kafeel brothers, in the aftermath of their involvement in the botched UK terror plot, they said.

While Kafeel Ahmed succumbed to burns in the UK, his brother Sabeel is in custody of British police.

The hard disc which the police sent to decoding in Hyderabad has not thrown much light on Ahmed brothers' activities, police said.

The Pioneer Edit Desk
Jihadis look for new destinations
Terrorism appears to have started making inroads into southern cities, thus expanding the theatre of violence. This has been further exposed with the arrest of a Bangalore-based software engineer accused of being part of a terror network. With the arrest of Mohammed Yahya Kammukutty, 31, on Thursday by a team of Karnataka detectives as part of an investigation, dangerous terror links in the region are being traced between diverse organisations that have been on the police radar for several months. Six others had been arrested earlier on similar charges. These youth are believed to be activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India and are suspected to have been an important link of SIMI with terror modules. Kammukutty, in particular, is said to have been a close associate of key wanted Kerala SIMI president CAM Basheer, who has received terrorist training in Pakistan. It is now increasingly clear that SIMI, which has a strong presence in Karnataka, has been providing support to foreign trained terrorists. It is quite probable that these arrests are just the tip of the iceberg. It has been known for some time that terrorist groups have been attracted to south India as they have attempted to spread their subversive activities beyond the regions that have been their historic focus. Terrorist outfits such as Lashkar-e-Tayyeba and Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami are known to be active in various locations spread across south India. They receive support from SIMI which has a strong presence in the various south Indian States as also several front organisations.

What makes these terror groups more dangerous is their links with both the ISI and the LTTE; they also have other international connections. The southern States are particularly attractive as cities such as Bangalore showcase India's economic success -- the image they would like to dent through terror. Such plans have already been operationalised with attacks on key targets in south India in recent months. Last year there was a powerful blast at Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid, but it was perhaps the earlier attack on Bangalore's Indian Institute of Science that clearly indicated the terrorists' intent. What is disturbing is that terror groups apparently have no difficulty in finding recruits to their nefarious cause. Of particular concern is the participation of educated youth and professionals, drawn to this ideology of hate. Among those arrested this time are not just young engineers but also medical professionals. Many such cells of educated youth may be proliferating across India, more so in Karnataka that has so far been largely insulated from jihadi violence. Hubli is emerging as the new hub of terror. Hopefully, New Delhi isn't sleeping.

Techie fights kidnap stain

QUOTENew Delhi, Feb. 23: A former Intel engineer accused of kidnapping a woman doctor for extortion linked to “fundamentalist activity” has moved Delhi High Court to quash the charge.

Bangalore-based Shaji Yusuf, 31, denied helping his friend, former IBM engineer Mohammed Yaseen, lure Dr Madhumita Mishra of Delhi to their hometown and abduct her.

Main accused Yaseen, 32, had befriended Mishra over the social networking site Facebook at a time her marriage was under strain, according to the first information report filed by the doctor’s husband in Delhi.

A few months ago, the duo induced her to move to Bangalore, forced her to convert to Islam and held her captive in a madarsa, Subijay Sinha’s FIR says.

Yaseen was arrested in Bangalore and brought to Delhi. When Yusuf arrived in the capital to look for him, he was arrested, too. Both are out on bail but have lost their jobs.

During the bail hearing at a Delhi court, the public prosecutor had alleged that Yaseen had got Mishra to convert by promising her a plush job in West Asia. He had also allegedly contacted Mishra’s sister Rachna and asked for a Rs 10-lakh ransom.

Yusuf said he had come to Delhi to be at Yaseen’s side after learning that his friend was being detained for 15 days and would face trial for a crime he had not committed.

His plea for quashing of the charges (only against him) cites Mishra’s police statement after the cops brought her back from the Bangalore madarsa, alleged to have terror links.

The prosecution said Mishra had indeed been confined against her will and her mobile had been taken away. But the doctor said she had been staying in the madarsa of her own will.

Yusuf’s petition says Mishra’s statement does not even mention him — it names only Yaseen.

“Although the petitioner has no role in the alleged crime and the same has also been admitted by Mishra… he is made guilty of the alleged offence and has been labelled a co-conspirator,” the petition said.

While granting him bail, the court had asked Yusuf to surrender his passport and told him he needed police permission to go abroad.

Yusuf’s petition says he graduated in electrical engineering from TKM Engineering College at Kollam, in his home state of Kerala, and had worked with Intel till December 2007.

Coincidentally, another electrical engineer from Kerala, who too had worked with leading IT companies in Bangalore, was arrested on terror charges on February 22.
