With Prez Kalam having decided very logically that he is not in the race for election for next Prez, the field is open to guess for probable candidates.
First of all, looking at the history of past Prez, Dr. Radha Krishnan and Prez stand out as they come from different backgrounds. With coalition politics having made almost permanent abode in New Delhi, the post of Prez has become all the more important.
At this time, Dr. Karan Singh seems to be eyeing for the post. He is a versatile person apart from being career politician.
Though I don't know Amitabh Bachchan is interested or not, I will suggest his name too. He stands tall among Indians to be 1st citizen of India.
My 3rd guess is that even Manmohan Singh may be candidate.
It's high time that public starts taking interest in this important post much ahead of time otherwise you may have to accept the candidate thrown up by these politicians.</span></span>
Karan Singh is useless. A total waste, not fit to become India's President.
Check his record in J&K, which is Zilch. How many times he had visited Kashmiri Pandit camps in North India or even in Delhi?
Other than licking any Congress President, just to keep his family assets with his family, he is useless.
Ofcourse, Congress wants their shoe licker as President of India, so that they can have free ride to abuse India's consitution.

In all probability, the next President will also be from the minority community.However, it will all depend upon the political parties and the main opposition party the BJP with its current infighting is unlikely to put any serious effort to get its candidate elected as President. In any case, the people of India do not have any direct say in the matter of election of the President of India. The composition of the electoral collage is such that it is only the political leaders who are the deciding factor.

Most men are mere toys in the hands of Time and very often we find unexpected men coming to occupy unexpected positions at unexpected times. But rarely do we find unplanned developments setting good precedents for the society at large. Though we had a couple of earlier Prime Ministers from this category, the assumption of office by Dr. Singh has opened up a golden opportunity for Indian democracy. Even if we have to admit that it was a clear distortion (and hijacking) of mandate, the precedent can prove advantageous for Indian democracy, if it is utilised properly. To a large extent he is the first apolitical chief executive for the highly politicised Indian democracy. He might have landed on the chair thanks to specific reasons, but his erudition and academic brilliance must set the long lost meritorious precedence for the most difficult job in the world viz. Prime Minister of India.
In a way it is good times for India now. In addition to an erudite Prime Minister we have one of the best brains that India ever produced as the President of the country. No other President has given us so many ideas and suggestions for improvement. It is definite failure on the part of each of us if we could not heed to any of his ideas and improve ourselves. Very rightly he targeted the children for first hand dissemination of ideas. We can rest assured that at least 10% of them will develop wings of fire and make India proud. President Kalam has already indicated his unwillingness for a second term and another term for the incumbent PM is almost out of question. It is in this historical context that opportunity is presenting two brilliant candidates in front of us.
<b>Narayana Murthy for President</b>
Whatever way we look at it, the logical step from Kalam to Murthy cannot be missed out. If one has presented brilliant ideas, the other one has demonstrated miraculous dexterity in implementation of ideas. To build up something like Infosys from scratch with little capital and lot of knowledge is a feat achievable only by the likes of Narayana Murthy. India of twenty first century is leading the world in knowledge and we desperately need the guidance of Murthys to capitalise on this advantage. Countries like China will overtake us in every field if we cannot consolidate our unique advantages in the next one or two decades. Narayana Murthy has demonstrated his unparalleled leadership qualities many times in his own field and related ones. Moreover he is a thoroughbred Indian technocrat who understands India and Indians like no one else. His capacity to âthink globally and act locallyâ can provide the right mix to inspire young entrepreneurs of India. If Kalam could stimulate the children of the country, Murthy will do the same with the youth of the country. What India needs today is âout-of-the-boxâ ideas and âthinking really bigâ. There is no better candidate than Murthy who could guide us better today. He commands respect and he can lead the nation by example.
<b>Arun Shourie for Prime Minister</b>
In contemporary India, there is no one who has achieved so much in the fields of journalism, economics, administration and culture than Arun Shourie. After his extra-ordinary performance in journalism as the redoubtable Editor of Indian Express, there were many who had dismissed him as a mere paper tiger. To the admiration of those (like me) who adore him and to the dismay of his distracters, his subsequent performance as a historian who understands history and administrator who knows his job has been outstanding. We have many learned and eminent historians like Thapar and Panicker who are unwilling to learn from history for extraneous reasons. In their midst, Arun Shourie, who is not a historian by training, was a shining example of how an Indian historian must interpret and learn from Indian history. He presented the picture of an Indian sage who understands the absolute necessity of trustworthy soldiers around a peaceful ashram to protect the champions of ahimsa. It goes to his credit that he alerted Indian mind against the mechanisations of foreigners who have been âservicingâ India for decades in education, social service and cultural uplift. Communism, pseudo-Secularism and eternal-Reservation also got thoroughly exposed and discredited under his piercing arguments based on facts and figures. Disinvestment and dismantling of trade barriers found a meaning in government corridors only after he took over the respective ministries. In every sense of the term, Arun Shourie easily classifies himself as one of those ancient Indian seers who combined erudition, morality and profound wisdom. Given a chance, he is sure to take India to the very top in the next five years. The only condition that we should put is that he should get elected to Lok Sabha and not to make a back door entry through Rajya Sabha.
Our typical reaction in such demanding situations is to look for reasons to oppose. Murthy and Shourie may or may not belong to any vote banks, ideological groups or even pressure groups. All those who want a Harijan for the sake of upliftment of so-called Harijans must remember that it was a non-Harijan like Mahatma Gandhi who did anything for Harijans in recent times. The Jagjivans who amassed wealth beyond their own imagination and Narayanans who cried annually citing inability to help anyone except immediate family are bad examples for repetition. It would be mere waste of time and effort to hunt for Harijans and Minorities just for the sake of it. Murthy and Shourie will provide the best combination that can accelerate Indiaâs growth and social development beyond our imagination. And only when the nation develop will the Brahmins, Harijans and Minorities can develop. In India today â "North or South, Murthy and Shourie are the bestâ. Let us hope good sense prevails among all political parties and its leaders.

Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has given broad hints, for the first time, that he is in the race for Presidential election next year.
Speaking to media persons on his way back home after a week-long visit to two Caribbean nations, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, he said he had never been deterred by his age from undertaking any assignment.
Shekhawat was replying to a question on the Presidential election next year after he had described his experience on being on the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, where he spent a day.
"Even at this age of 83, I could go to the top. That was a unique experience."
Next came the question on whether he now aimed at scaling another height (the post of President).
Shekhawat replied, âMy age does not pose a hurdle for any job."
To a question if he went to the gym to keep himself fit, the Vice President said gyms were meant for those who were physically unfit. "See, my schedule has been so hectic in the last four-five days," he said, driving home the point that he was very fit physically for the countryâs top job.
Though the Presidential elections are far away, Shekhawatâs name has been doing the rounds along with other names like Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee in the political circles.
But the parties are not expected to do any serious exercise until early next year. President APJ Abdul Kalam is due to retire in July next year. A lot, of course, depends on the mood of the Congress and the Left and the prevailing political scenario then.
Though belonging to the BJP, Shekhawat has managed to earn all round praise for his conduct of proceedings in the Rajya Sabha (of which he is the Chairman) during the last four years.
In fact, his election as Vice President in August 2002 brought to the fore Shekhawat's rapport with leaders of other political parties.
His 149-vote victory margin over Opposition candidate Sushil Kumar Shinde (presently Power Minister) had taken even BJP members by surprise. He was expected to win by a margin of 110 votes in the best of circumstances.
Shekhawat, who has been Chief Minister of Rajasthan three times, polled 454 of the 766 votes cast by MPs. Shinde got a disappointing 305 votes. Of the 788 MPs - the electoral college comprises members of the Rajya Sabha (245) and the Lok Sabha (543) - 766 cast their votes.
Shekhawat's large victory margin was attributed to his campaign to woo the 'Thakur' members as well as those who did not belong to the NDA.
On his visit to Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, Shekhawat said his tour to these places would send a strong message to all Caribbean nations that India was keen to cooperate with them on various spheres, particularly in petrochemicals, bauxite and IT.
Shekhawat, who inaugurated the India-built cricket stadium in Guyana, said he was overwhelmed by the warm reception by the people who stood along the way from Georgetown airport to his hotel and shouted "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" and "Vandemataram" to welcome him.
He said if the people of Indian origin wanted to trace their roots in India, they could seek the help the government of India. "My tour will boost bilateral ties and send the right message to all the Caribbean nations. It would also boost confidence in the minds of people, a majority of whom are of Indian origin.â

A couple of years ago, in a BBC radio interview, the 'Indian' Amartya Sen decried the 'hindutva' movement as dangerous, and that he doesn't believe in a Hindu India. Of course he had nothing to say about the islam-christo pounding of the Hindus from all corners of the country, and systematic attempts by these fanatical religions to eliminate all other faiths from the face of the earth. While he speaks in defense of the rights of the christians/muslims in India to retain their identities , he says nothing about the rights of the Hindus to have/retain their hindu identity.
Sen is another one of those ''Indians,' - an Indian passport holder but a genuine westerner, or more precisely an upper crust Englishman, at heart (just like Nehru) - who is more comfortable holding a champagne glass in his hands, quoting English poets and statesman in every speech, and saying 'I say old chum!'
He says and does things that will make him more acceptable to the westerners, and successful in the west. He holds on to his Indian passport for effect - nothing more. But these qualities are precisely what might put him on the presidential candidate shortlist. He is someone that will suit Sonia Maino and the Nehru- Gandhi sycophants, the marxists, etc., very well - someone who has has entirely given up his hindu root and identity, and has adopted a 'cosmopolitan' one that has no problem saying "Art father who walks in heaven.....", but will have immense problem reciting/quoting a vedic verse, lest he be branded - gasp! - a hindu.
