New Delhi, Jan 31 (ANI): Scores of activists of Shiv Sena protested against British lawmakers' recent demand for mercy for Mohammad Afzal Guru, awarded death sentence for attack on Parliament in 2001, here on Wednesday.
The activists, holding banners and placards, shouted slogans against R. Gondsif and J.Corbin for pleading the Supreme Court, which has sentenced Afzal for his role in the conspiracy to attack the Parliament complex, on humanitarian grounds.
"Mohammad Afzal, who attacked our country's Parliament, was ordered to be hanged by our top court. Despite that they (British lawmakers) are demanding mercy for him. We want to tell them that they have no right to meddle in the affairs of our country. It is the Indian government and the Constitution of India which will decide on this issue, not Britishers," said Jai Bhagwan Goel, leader of Shiv Sena.
The activists also burnt an effigy of British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Five gunmen stormed the heavily guarded Parliament complex on December 13, 2001, but were killed by security forces before they could enter the building.
Afzal's case is currently pending with President A.P.J.Abdul Kalam who is yet to decide on his clemency plea.
Frenzied protests have been witnessed in the Kashmir Valley against the death sentence by several groups and human rights activists, who say Afzal was not given a fair trial. Year old news, but not sure if it came to light. Those who compared the case of Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan prison to that of Afzal, should know this, that Sarabjit has converted to muhammedanism in hope to get the pardon.

New Delhi, April 6 Embracing Islam will not help Indian national Sarabjit Singh escape the noose for his alleged involvement in a series of bomb blasts in Lahore, Pakistan's Law Minister Muhammad Wasi Zafar said here today. Reacting to news reports that Sarabjit has converted to Islam, changed his name to Sarfaraz Ahmad and was offering namaz five times a day, he said Pakistani laws do not discriminate between religions and if he has been found guilty by the courts he has to face execution.
"That is the law of the land. It does not vary from man to man and faith to faith," Zafar, who is here to attend the 45th Annual Session of Asian African Legal Consultative Organization, said in an interview.
Asked if it was a desparate act on the part of a prisoner condemned to death in the Islamic country and awaiting a decision on his mercy petition from President Musharraf, Zafar said "he (Sarabjit) says he has done it according to his own free will. It dispels all such impressions." Explainig the legal position, he said even President Parvez Mushrraf did not have power to pardon Sarabjit, as the matter fell within the jurisdiction of the Interior Minister.

Amrit Wilson of the South Asia Solidarity Group, which organised the meeting, said four British MPs â Jeremy Corbyn, Roger Godsiff, John McDonell and George Galloway â had already signed a letter to the Indian President urging him to show mercy to Afzal.
She said Afzal's case highlighted the life of a surrendered militant, with its unending harassment, torture and extortion. She said, âBoth the forces of Hindutva and the use of the war on terror to further America's military and economic aims have led to an erosion of democracy and democratic values in India. In trying to bring Bush's version of 'democracy', India is becoming an authoritarian state."

The more and more I think (which is not a good thing), I'm fast approaching the conclusion that Afzal and all the rest of scum gang should be freed and sent to back to Pakistan. For one, today even our prisons are better than Pakistan. And the tax-payer doesn't have to bear the cost of boarding/lodging. The insults heaped on the nations security personnel by this shamless government dosen't seem to have any end in sight. Read this recently and couldn't believe my eyes.

New Delhi: The BJP's success in the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections has put immense pressure on the UPA Government to punish the guilty of the December 13, 2001 attack on Parliament.
A powerful group within the Manmohan Singh government and the Congress insists that South Block has run out of options and argues that the Home and Law ministries studying the clemency petitions lodged with the President cannot delay the inevitable.
That means the delay in hanging Afzal Guru, who has been given death for his role in the attack, is now becoming a political liability for the Government. Its embarrassment became severe when Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi used the "terrorism" card while campaigning in the elections.
"What should the Gujarat police do with a man who has terror links with Pakistan? Should they take Sonia Gandhi's permission? Whoever threatens Gujarat will be dealt with," Modi had said.
The Congress' future challenges group is troubled by this Opposition emphasis on terrorism. The Government has told the party leadership that the Home and Law ministries have found no way of saving Afzal. Legally, speaking, Afzal's is a lost cause.
There is increasing awareness that if the Government doesn't act decisively sometime this year, the BJP will make terrorism a countrywide emotive issue during the run-up to general elections.
The Government officially denies any move on Afzal but politically it has made up its mind. The question is if the noose is going to tighten round Afzal which is the best time to let that happen.
Karnataka is the first big election coming up in April-May. Should the government choose a date before that? Or wait for the polls in the four big states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh and Delhi in November?
Interestingly, Jammu and Kashmir goes to the polls possibly in October. The government is not too worried about the likely impact in the trouble-torn state. As it is, anti-incumbency is expected to take its toll on the Ghulam Nabi government.
Whichever the month the government chooses, Afzal's time is fast running out. A powerful section in the Government wants it to do a balance and simultaneously take action on the Srikrishna Commission report on the 1993 Mumbai riots which has been gathering dust for nearly a decade.
In death, Afzal might provide Congress the necessary political weapon it is looking for.

"I don't think the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government can ever reach a decision. The Congress party has two mouths and is playing a double game," said Afzal, convicted for the December 2001 Indian Parliament attack in an exclusive interview in Tihar prison's Jail No 3.
"I really wish L K Advani becomes India's next Prime Minister as he is the only one who can take a decision and hang me. At least my pain and daily suffering would ease then," said Afzal, who has been in solitary confinement in the capital's high security Tihar Jail.
"Please don't compare me with Sarabjit. The issues are separate. My sympathies are with him, but my fight is for the Kashmir conflict. Now, I am not even seeking any clemency and have no objection to the government deciding my fate."
June 9, 2008 newspapers report that Afzal blames Indian national Congress for the indecision on his case. He says that he is dying of the wait. Looks like another pressure point before the new elections.

Government on Friday said the execution of death sentence of Afzal Guru, convicted in the Parliament attack case, was being delayed as "you cannot pick, choose and hang" and there were many mercy petitions pending for long.
"You cannot pick, choose and hang. Nowhere does it happen in the world including Pakistan," Law and Justice Minister M Veerappa Moily told a 'meet the press' programme organised by Press Association here.
Noting that no country which has rule of law can have such a hanging carried out "at the discretion of any political party", Moily said there was need for evolving a mechanism for quick disposal of mercy petitions.
He said 28 mercy petitions were pending for disposal for long.
