What's stopping the government from firing the striking airport workers ?
Their percentage is too small to be an important vote bank, and most common citizens who use the airport will appreciate it too.

Here's an idea, instead of trying to privatize or improve the existing airport, the government could have simply let private players build a new one. They could have slowly dealt with the existing airport.

A City like Delhi is going to need multiple large Airports, just like any Industrialized big city, like Los Angeles has LAX, Burbank, Long Beach, and lots of big Airports in the area.

The Bay Area in California with 6.5 million people has SFO, SJC, and OAK three major airports (not to mention the small general aviation airports). Let's say the Delhi metropolian area of the future will have 25-30 million people in the future. They will need atleast 5 large airports.

The idea of developing new airports in the private sector and allowing the other 124 operational airports to function under the present Government controlled set up, will in the long run create another sick PSU on the lines of the Textile Corporation of India. The privatization of the major airports should in my view be allowed to continue but this should not prevent the construction of new airports by private sector.
The CPM led Government in West Bengal has already floated the idea of a second airport in Kolkata by the Private Sector while the existing one be allowed to continue functioning under the Government. The existing space around the Kolkata airport still has lots of open space for expansion. If the mosque can be shifted, the second runway can also be expanded to its full extent. These are not problems which cannot be resolved. The main problem is the Trade Unions opposition to the privatization move. It is high time that the political leaders should take a dispassionate view of the situation and take action which will help in the accelerated development of the economy of the region, for which better means of communication with the outside world is a pre requisite.

This has surprisingly gone down well with majority of the staff. Not only are the salaries extremely exciting - with the lowest being Rs 20,000 - prospects of offshore training too are luring.

The development work at the airport will be initiated in phases by the joint venture company, which comprises GMR and Fraport (Frankfurt Airport) groups. There is good news for passengers as well. A refurbished IGI is on the cards as well.

Soon after taking over, the private consortia held a one-to-one meeting with the various Head of Departments (HoDs) of Airport Authority of India (AAI) on Wednesday.

Air Traffic Control (ATC), the most important wing of the airport, will be taken care of by Government agencies. The areas, which will be left out of the purview of private player's control would be the custom's immigration services, plant and quarantine services and security provisions at the airport.

Apart from this, all employees irrespective of their designation, would be sent to Frankfurt, Malaysia or other foreign countries for training.

"In about 2,400 employees of AAI are presently working at the IGI airport. Among them, 60 per cent will be retained by the private consortia after a period of three years. The absorption would however be based on performance. The other 40 per cent will not be working at IGI. 109 employees will be retiring in the next three years. The remaining 851 employees will be absorbed by other branches of AAI in different cities," said a senior airport official.

The consortia, on its part made it clear that any kind of increment in the salaries of employees would be performance oriented.

IGI airport has been given out on a lease period of 30 years to the JV. AAI has 26 per cent stake in the privatisation process which boils down to Rs 52 crore, while the consortia will have a share of whopping Rs 142 crore from the total pie of Rs 200 crore.

Within 2 years we will know.
First, check will be toilets and Phenol smell.
Second, rats and broken flower pot.
Third, fixing broken false ceiling.
Fourth, implementing "No-smoking" zone in airport
Fifth, providing clean dress to staff.
Sixth, hiring people with brain and energy.

Both Pakistan and CHina Airlines (Taiwan) are higher.
I wonder what it is for Jet and other private airlines. A lot of it could be bad Air Traffic Control system in India, plus the poor ground equipment (Navaids and radar). I think only a handful of Indian airports have ILS's whereas in the U.S. even relatively small airports have good instrument approaches.

I think Air India and Indian also have one of the oldest fleets in the world. Airlines in Industrialized countries usually have much newer aircraft.

There has been no major accidents or aircrashes involving Air India aircrafts since 1985 as per the data under referance. Whereas, other airlines mentioned in the same report had aircrashes in recent years. The sane is the case with Indian Airlines. Therefore, it is incorrect to say that the safety record of both these airlines is pretty bad. Yes, it is a fact that they have a comparitively old fleet of aircrafts. Already, steps have been taken to address this issue and as an interim measure, a number of aircrafts have been taken on dry lease.
As far as the ATC over India is concerned, except for an headon collision between a IL-76 of Kazakistan and a Saudia Boeing 747, no major mishap has been reported over India in the last one decade.

Not only old fleet but junk fleet. Recently, Air India lifted couple of planes from Mohave, CA junk yard; they were sitting in junk yard for over 3 years. They had refurbished those planes and now in use by India. Recent LA and Frankfurt incidence happened on those planes.

This is sure to pinch your purse. Soon you will have to shell out money for all the facilities - be it rolling the trolleys or dialling at a local number or even the ride to and fro the terminal building and aircraft - at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). 

With the modernisation of the IGI Airport, the private consortia, GMR Fraport, will charge passengers for these services. At present, these services are being provided free of cost by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) under which the IGI Airport operates.

A plan on the lines of foreign countries is being chalked out. In countries like US, passengers have to pay for using trolleys to ferry their luggage. According to Airport Authority of India sources, these services will no longer remain free of cost.

The other free service, which passengers can enjoy at the airport is local telephone service. Now with the new system, the passengers will be charged for that too.

"Although, a time frame has not been set for the implementation of the project, a discussion on the issue is underway," said an airport official.

On Thursday, two Innovas and Toyota Camry cars were made operational to ferry passengers from the aircraft to the terminal building. For this the passengers of the non-scheduled operators are required to shell out Rs 500 each.

Earlier, the cost for these services was being borne by the AAI. Ambassador cars were being used for the purpose. "This is just the beginning, in the coming
days passengers will be charged for everything that they use at the airport," added the official.

I agree with you. Some further suggestions to GOI:

GOI should also allow loitering by cows and buffaloes at the airports afterall many distinguished visitors from SC/ST like Lalooji and others might carry them on their official public service trips all over India. Remember Devi Lal ji took all his rustic friends lock, stock and buffaloes in 5 star hotels in Delhi to make a point.

There should be centrally located and Persian carpeted enclosures for Muslims where they can offer prayers for world peace and harmony. Azaan prayers should be organised by GOI through public annoucements.

Indian Airlines and Air India must offer Hukkahs and Bidis/Gutkha with Chola Bhaturas and tandoori ckickens. Tea should be served in earthen tea cups. Brahmins & Dwijas should be barred from the business class. Rahul Bajaj ji should travel in the economy class only on his official trips. Special upper caste departure fee should be introduced so that they never feel the need to come back to their motherland in many years.

Lotas should be kept available in the toilets for many of the discerning & distinguished visitors. Oh Boy! I only miss Vel puri wallahs at the IGIA. My last suggestion, a hawkers corner at IGIA where desis can enjoy Dahi Bhallas and Pani Puris before taking off.

It will also mark the end of the three-month transition period where AAI and DIAL had managed the airport together.

Mumbai: Availability of low-cost airlines, rising middle-class incomes and a booming economy âIndiaâs aviation industry has never had it so good.

With passenger traffic soaring by 25 per cent annually, aircraft makers and leasing firms are making the most of the good times.

However, the unprecedented aviation boom has also led to overcrowding of the skies.

CNN-IBN has learnt that the Civil Aviation Ministry is now looking at measures to temporarily restrict new licenses for upcoming airliners. It also wants to curtail the overuse of metro airports

âWe need to review whether we have enough competition in the metro sector. However, thereâs no permanent ban on aviation licences. Metro routes are already too congested,â said Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel.

But this development does not seem to be worrying aircraft makers like Boeing. In fact, Boeing has doubled its forecast for India.

They are looking at and seriously considering orders for 856 new commercial jet airliners worth over $72bn in the next 20 years.

âEconomic growth and liberalisation are driving the growth of aviation in India. Therefore we have doubled the target,â said Senior Vice President, Sales of South Asia Boeing, Dinesh Keskar.

The ministry is soon expected to come out with its civil aviation policy and with serious plans of clipping the wings of new airline companies, that's where the devil could lie be for the upcoming airliners.
Back to permit license raj. What else can be expected from commie and congress.

It is not the question of License Raj, it is a fact that the airports have become overcowded and there can be a mishap anytime, so some measures are required till necessary infrastructure for handling the increased traffic is in place.

With the ever-increasing traffic at Palam airport, even after expansion of ground facilities the congestion in the air corridor will get bad to worse in the years to come. So privatisation of the airport is not the end of the problem. It is time for the planners to think of another airport for the ever-expanding capital of India and the accompanying growth in air traffic. At present, the Safderjung airport is being used only by the Delhi flying Club and by some helicopters. Since, it is in the heart of the VVIP zone and in a most densely populated area, it is not desirable to put back this airport for use once again for regular flights.
Often we hear of talks regarding construction of another airport at Greater Noida. This would involve considerable amount of resources for setting up the infrastructure and also it would take several years for the project to be completed and becoming operational. For immediate improvement of the situation, the authorities may consider creation of a Civil Enclave at the airbase at Hindon. We have several such enclaves in the country and it is not a new concept. At least, some of the low cost airlines can be persuaded to use the facility as they are at present spending considerable amount of fuel for lack of prompt landing clearance at Delhi airport. The only major hurdle will be the transporting of passengers to the city. This can easily be organised by use of deluxe buses from the airport to the city. In the process, the Ministry of Defence will also be able to generate revenue from landing and ground handling charges.

Air travellers to get Rs 10,000 for flight delaysQUOTENew Delhi, December 24: In a relief to passengers, who are left stranded at airports owing to flight cancellation and delays due to technical snags, State Consumer Commission has held that airlines operating from Delhi will have to pay a compensation of Rs 10,000 each to domestic travellers if the delay exceeded two hours.

"Every airline operating from Delhi shall pay a minimum compensation of Rs 10,000 to every domestic passenger in case there is delay in departure and arrival of two hours or more than the schedule time," Justice J D Kapoor, President of the Commission, said in a common order.

The Commission also ordered that all the affected passengers of international flights would be paid Rs 20,000 each as compensation. 

Late running, cancellation of flights, offloading of consumers with confirmed status of ticket and traffic congestion in the air and on the ground have become the order of the day, said Justice Kapoor adding "they cause enormous mental agony, harassment and physical discomfort which are not assessable in terms of money".
