DALLAS - Over the weekend, 7-Eleven Inc. turned a dozen stores into Kwik-E-Marts, the fictional convenience stores of "The Simpsons" fame, in the latest example of marketers making life imitate art.
Those stores and most of the 6,000-plus other 7-Elevens in North America will sell items that until now existed only on television: Buzz Cola, KrustyO's cereal and Squishees, the slushy drink knockoff of Slurpees.
The promotion, however, is not risk-free. The proprietor of Kwik-E-Mart is a man named Apu who speaks in a heavy Indian accent. He is based on a manager Groening encountered while shopping at a 7-Eleven in Los Angeles nearly 20 years ago and plays to stereotypes about convenience-store operators and Asian immigrants.
Many of 7-Eleven's franchisees are Indian, company officials say, although they say they don't track exact numbers. Bargerhuff said they were "overwhelmingly positive" after hearing of the Kwik-E-Mart idea, but "it was not a 100 percent endorsement."
"There was definitely a concern of offending people," she said. "But they seemed to understand that 'The Simpsons' makes fun of everybody. The vast majority saw this as a great opportunity."
That's the case for Kumar Assandas, a 28-year-old franchisee whose parents immigrated from India. His store in suburban Las Vegas is one of the temporary Kwik-E-Marts.
"I know it's a stereotype, but it doesn't bother me. Everybody knows it's a joke," Assandas said. "I'm a big Simpsons fan myself, and maybe subconsciously it even inspired me to become a 7-Eleven owner."

ON BOARD USS NIMITZ: Amid protests on shore and controversy raging across the country, the USS Nimitz CVN 68 docked outside the Chennai port at 6.45 am on Monday, ushering in a breeze of excitement and a series of events in the city for its 4,600 crew members.
Batch by batch the sailors, trainers and other staff on board are being brought to the city to see what India is like and to witness a major event in Indo-US relationship. Aged between 18 and 40, for most of them it was first visit to India. The youngsters queued up all along the day, waiting to be taken in a ferry to the port, 5 km away. <b>A whopping $1 million will be spent on each day of the stay and entertainment of this huge contingent in Chennai.</b>
One of the biggest ships in the world â it stretches to 4.5 acres and has 23 storeys â hosted a reception in the evening for special Indian invitees on its hangar, which covers the entire length of the ship. A group of reporters from Chennai was taken on board, where the carrier fleet was lined up. It included one of its biggest carriers, E-2C Hawkeye 2000, equipped with early warning systems on weather, specialised computers providing command and control to all air wing assets. F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, F/A-18A/C Hornet, EA-6B Prowler and SH-60F/H Seahawk too formed the line-up. But ask any sailor where the nuclear weapons are, they would reply: "Frankly, I have not seen any of them on board!"
An equally evading reply came from the commander of the Carrier Strike Group 11, Rear Admiral John Terence Blake, who addressed the media at the Carrier Wing: "We donât disclose the presence or absence of weapons on board. The US policy is that we donât routinely deploy nuclear warheads."
There are two reactors on board that generate the power for the floating city. Blake said none of the nuclear waste is discharged into the sea. The Nimitz has its own radio station, TV channel and newspaper âNimitz Newsâ. "We have 40 journalists and media personnel on board. We double-up as both journalists as well as photographers," said MLSN Duane Devorak.

The controversy surrounding the docking of the USS Nimitz in Chennai doesn't seem to have worried the crew, as <b>they spent their day making a difference to the lives of little children.
</b>
Hours after the ship docked in Chennai, <b>its volunteers hit the streets beginning their community service projects at three locations, including two homes for children.</b>
It was hard work with a smile, as they leveled the ground, lay new pathways and painted the classrooms.
For many of them, it was a learning experience on the difficult life in developing countries.
<b>And for the children who benefited from this work, it was hard to believe that their homes were transformed in a day.</b>
Moreover, they relished the opportunity to shake hands, talk and take pictures with pilots and sailors.

India and the US are close to inking a pact under which their militaries can refuel ships and aircraft in cashless transactions that are balanced at the end of year, a senior US officer said on Saturday.
Under the Logistics Support Agreement (LSA) that is currently with the Cabinet Committee on Security, the two countries can also "borrow" military equipment wherever this is required instead of having to cart it all the way from home, Lt General Jeffrey Kohler, director of the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency, told reporters in the Capital.
The US, which had proposed the pact some four years ago during the previous National Democratic Alliance (NDA) regime, has similar agreements in place with some 65 countries.
In most cases, it is called the Acquisition and Cross Servicing Agreement (ACSA) that was formerly known as the NATO Mutual Support Act. It was enacted to simplify exchanges of logistic support, supplies, and services between the US and other NATO forces. It was amended in 1986, 1992 and 1994 to permit ACSAs with non-NATO countries.
Kohler explained how the agreement works.
"There's an Indian Navy ship in the US that needs refuelling. It does so for free. Sometime during the year, US military aircraft will land in India or our navy vessels will visit your ports and refuel in similar manner. At the end of the year, we balance the books," he said.
"Let's say India is sending troops to country X on a UN peacekeeping mission. You can borrow vehicles and even armoured personnel carriers but not weapons from the assets we might have in the neighbourhood. Here too, we'll balance the books at the end of the year," Kohler added.
Had such an agreement been in force, India could have saved some $1 million in the Indian Navy's acquisition of the troop carrier USS Trenton, now renamed the INS Jalashva.
"Since the LSA was not in place, India had to pay extra for the fuel that we put on board (before handing over the vessel to the Indian Navy last month)," Kohler pointed out.
Kohler, who retires in September, is on his seventh visit to India. While in the Capital, he met Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt, Secretary (Defence Production) KP Singh, Director General (Acquisitions) Sheelbhadra Banerjee, Indian Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta, and Indian Air Force (IAF) vice chief Air Marshal BN Gokhale among others.
Vice Admiral-designate Jeffrey Wieringa, currently deputy assistant secretary of the US navy and director of the international programmes office, will succeed Kohler.

Sigh - I am now branded as a Hindu hater on the grounds I invoke infallibilities of the practitioners who are zealots.
Others question even my nationality - I am an American of South Indian origin. I am a proud Iyer with roots in Thanjavur. Yes - I am a heretic Brahmin but with a skeptical viewpoint on McHunduism that is prevalent in India currently.
Talking of security of India - consider the challenges.
Alleviation of poverty, opportunities for the emerging youth , balancing growth with rampant ecological destruction should be priorities.
Fundamental to all this is the need for a solid infrastructure - potable water system, safe and secure network of transportation and reliable power with minimal impact on the environment.
The power scenario is the basis for all other growth.
Nuclear power is the answer - look at what South Korea has achieved.
A rapid infusion of capital, know-how in the arena of nuclear power is required. Yes - India can engineer itself - but in this field it will take eons. Time is of the essence.
India needs to accelerate its infrastructure development. Or it risks being a coolie nation.
The logical strategy will be to allow the capitalistic market forces to implement the infrastructure.
India has survived and adapted far longer than predators that have evil designs on it. Like a sponge absorbs water, civilizations and cultures have been assimilated into India and yet its Hindu ethos has survived.
