I thought I knew a little bit about the Middle East. Boy, was I wrong. President Obama set me straight. Here's what our president taught me during his Middle-Eastern pilgrimage:

Churches and synagogues are about to open in Saudi Arabia. Since "Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance" and there are "over 1,200 mosques within our borders," I can't wait for the first Baptist hymn-sing in Riyadh. Sign me up!
Behind closed doors with Saudi King Abdullah, our president must've mentioned the many hundreds of churches and synagogues that thrived on the Arabian Peninsula during the Prophet's lifetime. Muslims zealots destroyed them. Time to get the bin Laden family's construction firm on the job re-building!
And stoning converts who leave Islam to death is a no-no, right?
Women can dress any way they want in Saudi Arabia. Just my analysis, based on Obama's insistence that Islam recognizes "the dignity of all human beings" and that Muslim women must be free to make their own decisions about what to wear. Surely, fashion choices extend to Mecca and Medina, not just Detroit and Paris?

Still, it was brave of our president to highlight slavery's "lash of the whip" in his speech, since his own ancestors, as Muslims along Africa's Swahili Coast, would have been complicit - if not actively engaged - in enslaving their fellow black Africans for Arab masters. As a self-proclaimed "student of history," Obama surely knows that.
<b>Holocaust, schmolocaust.</b>
Aren't those pesky Jews ever going to go away? Yes, denying the Holocaust is "hateful." But let's get a grip. Palestinians "endure . . . daily humiliations." Their lot's "intolerable." Israel "devastates Palestinian families." No wonder our president shunned wicked Israel during his trip - sending a clear, if unspoken, message that Jews are now fair game.
"America's strong bonds with Israel are . . . unbreakable." Yup. And they're issued by Chrysler.
Hamas is a legitimate, recognized voice of the Palestinians. Rocket attacks against civilians, suicide bombings and kidnappings really work.
<b>Iran can have nukes.</b>
Our president's acceptance of "peaceful nuclear power" for Tehran was coded language for "no pre-emptive military action."
Jordan doesn't matter.
So much for one Arab country's attempts at human decency. If you want attention from our president, you've got to be a desert gangbanger.
My wife wondered why Obama didn't make his speech in Indonesia, the world's most-populous Muslim state, where he would've been welcomed proudly as a home-boy. Obama just reinforced the stereotype that Muslim equals Arab.
<b>Democracy isn't for everybody.</b>
We're done peddling that particular drug.
Of course, our president didn't mention al Qaeda's catastrophic defeat in Iraq, where millions of Sunni Arabs rejected the terror organization. Iraq was Bush's war, so it's all bad.
And forget junk like modern medicine, telecommunications or even the internal combustion engine. Islam's been the source of real progress. Like "calligraphy." Medieval Islam's ballyhooed contributions actually were due to Greek-speaking Christians (including slaves) employed as court officials, to Armenian architects and Jewish physicians. But, yeah, Arabs had really good penmanship.
Our president's breakthrough message to the Muslim world was that America overthrew democratic regimes, slavery was our history's central feature, and we invaded people on a whim - but we're sorry now.
His crowd-pleasing speech sanitized and romanticized Islam, letting the disgruntled populations of the Middle East off the hook for their own self-wrought failures, their monstrous oppression of women (our president's women's-right-to-wear-hijab remarks were aimed at Europe), and the violent aggression toward others they often celebrated and generally tolerated.
To Arab ears, especially, the Cairo speech made America the guilty party in our confrontations, as if, on 9/11, crazed Presbyterians had attacked Mecca. Yet, the historical facts are that Islam's remorseless assault on the West lasted for more than one thousand years, its cruel occupation of Christian lands lasted into the 20th century, and the dream of an all-conquering caliphate remains very much with us.
The last mass slaughter of Christians in Iraq wasn't a millennium ago, but in 1933. Al Qaeda isn't an aberration. It's a manifestation.
Our president may or may not be a student of history, but he can't just make it up.

The world view, or philosophical perspective, of Sarah Palin vs. say, David Lettermanâs or Katie Couricâs, is profound at its core. Not only are the philosophical differences profound, but the political implications of those differences are as equally profound.
Palin is the philosophical descendant of those who created this countryâs constitution; Couric and Letterman, on the other hand, like much of the bi-coastal media/entertainment left, are more consistent with the self annihilating philosophy of moral relativism. While Palin is intelligent and constant in her views, I make no similar claims specifically about Letterman and Couric, relative to their views. They strike me as shallow and weak.

Palinâs language is always the same. She speaks about everything in a straight forward manner without straining for audience approval. She is direct.

Palin implicitly understands the limitations of reason. Moral relativists do not. Our Founding Fathers also understood manâs limitations and established a Constitution whose core principle was liberty, supported strongly by laws to protect this liberty. The left, on the other hand, believes that âtruthâ can be imposed on individuals and society as a whole. Many have commented on the futility of the latter. Frederich Hayekâs âThe Road To Serfdomâ is the clearest explanation of how that view ultimately and logically has lead to totalitarianism; the ultimate expression of political nihilism and its philosophical antecedent â moral relativism.
This philosophical divide is one reason for the leftâs hysteria over Palinâs very existence. It is, as if somewhere down in the lizard portion of their brain (You Have Three Brains), they understand her way of thinking could lay bare the implicit nihilism in theirs. The more ignorant element of the left pretends that Palin is so obviously stupid, vapid and reactionary that she is fair game for dehumanization.

How will baby boomers handle the recession? Zoomers, Doomers, Gloomers, Opportuneurs
It will be interesting to see how the baby boomer generation, like me will handle the current recession / depression. We've lived most our lives without any terrible hardships, unlike many of our parents' generation, who endured through the world wars, famines, genocides, migrations and depressions.
So here's my segmentation of baby boomers in a recession/ depression
ZOOMERS...That's short for boomers with zip. It's a term coined by Moses Znaimer, the Toronto media mogul who, in his 60s, is taking aim at the roughly one-third of the population that is 50 and over. These seniors are not ready to give up and have the financial resources to take their ideas forward ....grandpaneurs. Znaimer's definition: the body of a healthy 65-year-old, the mind of a 45-year-old, the libido of a 25-year-old, the heart of a teenager.
I've coined the following terms...
GLOOMERS...baby boomers who only see the down side.discouraged, downcast, dispirited, rudderless, hopeless, looking for salvation (economic other?), vulnerable

High hopes. <b>Angus Maddison in his pioneering work for OECD on the global GDP share</b> for the last 2,000 years has brought out an interesting fact pertaining to India and China.<b> As early as the 1820s, China (33%) along with India (16%) and other Asian countries had a share of more than 55 per cent in the global GDP.</b> By the late 20th century, it has declined to 29 per cent. The China percentage slid to 12, Indiaâs to 5.
<b>In the next 20 years, India should plan to have a share of at least 30 per cent of the global GDP. </b>These imply that India should be racing ahead. If India grows at 8 to 9 per cent in the coming decade, then it can become the worldâs third or fourth superpower.
But it also implies that, parallely, the West should decline in terms of their importance in the share of global GDP and world affairs.
Since the total is 100 per cent, any increased share for India and China would automatically reduce that of the other two.
Unlike the Great Depression of the 1920s, the current crisis for the West is <b>not just an economic crisis. It has a dimension of demography and conflict </b>(ongoing war with radical Islam) to it. Demographic, because <b>Europe </b>is slowly fading away from the global map. It used to have more than 20 per cent of the global population during the First World War, and now has less than 11 per cent. Whatâs more,<b> itâs expected to shrink to three per cent in as many decades.</b>
The reproductive rate in many European countries is less than 1.5, whereas the stable one is 2.1. <b>In the case of US, the crisis is more severe due to its declining savings rate and a long-term tendency to nationalise families and privatise government.</b>
Social security and Medicare system in US is classic case of <b>nationalising families.</b>
Such a declining Empire is dangerous to deal with. To start with, it does not want to accept the fact that it is a declining Empire.
Plus, it wants to retain its sole power status when it realises that its writ does not any more hold good. It tries to bully India.
Whenever a US official visits India, the beards in J&K become more active. Remember <b>Robin Raphael of the nineties vintage who propped up the Hurriyat Conference? </b>India recalls with anger the role Robin Raphael played during the Presidency of Bill Clinton in encouraging the formation of Hurriyat Conference, the umbrella organisation of moderate terrorists and terrorised moderates. Her only name to fame was she studied together with Clinton. <b>When Hillary comes to India, the level of violence in J&K will increase. </b>I wish someone in foreign office in India plots the correlation between visits of US officials and mob frenzy in the downtown Srinagar.
<b>The declining empire realises that its elbowroom is becoming lesser and lesser with the Pakistan army</b> that owns and controls a country. Islamabad always has a peculiar way of coming to discussion on any issue.
<b>They keep a gun on their own head and argue with others. </b>That is, they always threaten others with catastrophe if money is not given to them. This is the most sophisticated begging anywhere you can see in international relations. Bribing them wonât stop the plotters against the âUS Satanâ.
<b>The next thing the declining empire does is to cringe and appease. </b>The speech by Obama in Cairo is of that variety. He ascribed every human scientific endeavor to Islamic civilisation. Herein comes our ability to understand declining powers.

What is in Indian interest is the continuation of civil war in Pakistan for, say, another ten to twenty years â ambient conflict â<b> sort of auto-cannibalism </b>which will be a dynamic disequilibria â situation.
Remember the last century.
