Not a miracle. It is only by the relentless efforts, compromising but not letting go attitude, and above all tears and blood of our ancestors, that more than 80% India of today has survived as Hindus.

Nirad Chaudhary has analyzed this case uniquely in "Autobiography of an Unknown Indian". He compared the Islamic onslaught in Iran, and that in India. He says the Islamic onsluaght was like a hammer and India like an anvil. Hammer-like onslaught keep coming, and anvil kept getting the beating, but without breaking down. And he says, at first India turned to defeatism, but soon learrnt how to survive even in defeat, without being totally submerged, buying time and building strength, and acquiring a new form of Hindu nationalism which was defined first by social orthodoxy, then bhakti and then later militantic revolt. He says this national character of Hindus kept developing all through the muslim rule. Sometimes and at some places it even took defeatists view too (like he mentions some Rajputs sections).

And he says, as soon as Hindus were able to muster enough strength, wherever, they overthrew the Muslim imperialism. He connects this phase to coincide with arrival of Europeans, and Hindus taking help from Europeans. He recounts how Hindus had helped Clive in Bengal to defeat Sirajuddaula in 1757, and how Hindu kings of Nepal, Panjab, MP totally helped British in defeating muslim princes in later 1700s.

We have a thread "How Hindus Survived..." started by Digvijay to discuss this.
