Questions Related To India-forum Website
[quote name='Amatya Rakshas' date='19 September 2011 - 11:23 AM' timestamp='1316411129' post='112919']

Pranaam-s to all,

Also, wanted to know if it is ok to PM senior members/Gurus for any guidance with respect to reading material/authors. Some of us (maybe its just me) wish to develop a deeper perspective into matters and would be obliged if Gurus here guide us through. I have been going through all the posts/activities over the course of time and have noticed that now there is a drop in activities.

[size="3"]Echo the sentiments there![/size]<img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

[size="3"]Even forum technical admins seem to have gone AWOL.[Image: tongue.gif] Haven't yet received response to my request above.[/size]

Oh we are just little pre-occupied with our offline-life, actually want a new team to moderate and update our front-end site.

We have lot of read-only traffic, the thread views are testimony to it as we as the google analytics.

We sure would like to up the replys etc, but just not getting time to do it.

Sumish, done on the print hack. Now 1000 posts per print.

[size="3"]O Man, rhytha!!<img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wub:' /> [/size][size="3"]It works great!!

[size="3"]Thanks a bunch, and more!!

Now that we are good for 50 pages of a thread, can it be insured that threads crossing that limit are broken and continued into new ones?

Alternatively, of course, you can keep increasing that hack value to take care threads larger than 50 pages. The rule, it seems, according to IP Board application's default code, is 20 posts per page.

Any web stuff I need to peruse diligently, I convert to PDF, so that I can do all the commenting tomfoolery -- highlighting, underlining etc.[/size]
Good job Sumishi on your perseverance in getting the page count increased. It serves a very basci need for those interested in that.

Thanks rhytha for changing the page limit.

We can exercise self disicpline when the thread goes to 50 pages.
[left][size="3"]Web pages to PDF - Comments, Tips & Tricks[/size]

  • [size="3"]The "print" option in this forum gives a printer-friendly single page (which is now combo of the first 50 pages of a thread).[/size]
  • [size="3"]The printer-friendly page does not maintain the look-and-feel of the IF pages, which is as should be.[/size]
  • [size="3"]Printing using a PDF printer driver (like the free Foxit PDF printer, PDF24, CutePDF writer, etc) converts a web page to PDF.[/size]

  • [size="3"]If for some reason you need that IF "look-and-feel" too, I have found that using the above PDF printer drivers on a normal IF page makes that page come up also in a "printer-friendly" style PDF i.e. without the IF "look-and-feel".[/size]
  • [size="3"]It is probably something to do with the complicated style-sheets etc. of the forum software -- the above drivers fail to produce a WYSIWYG (what-you[/size][size="3"]-[/size][size="3"]see[/size][size="3"]-[/size][size="3"]is[/size][size="3"]-[/size][size="3"]what[/size][size="3"]-[/size][size="3"]you[/size][size="3"]-get) PDF.[/size]
  • [size="3"]Even using (non-free) Adobe Acrobat's 7.0's "Create PDF from web page" option gives quite a mangled WYSIWYG page. [/size][size="3"]Probably higher version of Acrobat work better, I don't know.[/size]

  • [size="3"]However, there is one free PDF Printer driver I have found which gives the WYSIWYG effect : Winnovative Free HTML to PDF Converter.[/size]
  • [size="3"]It created great PDFs of IF pages (but will have to be done one by one). It even maintains the hyperlinks, unlike the earlier listed drivers.[/size]
btw, we just crossed 800 members <img src='http://www.india-forum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

A good landmark!

But I see that only 226 of the 801 members have number of posts greater than 1.

The rest are zeroes or one-night-stands![/size]

What's the history of the "Member Articles" section? Why is the section read-only, and how were the articles submitted?

Member articles section, is for a duplicate of the frontend articles into the forum. So members who dont visit the frontend and use the forum directly can read it here.
[size="3"]rhytha, nice manoeuver with the question-answer segment in the registration process.

That question will be changing from time to time, I gather?

[size="3"]Dear Admins,

One functionality sorely missing from the posting editor is the capacity to "float" contents, such as an image, to the left or right, so that the rest of the text can be moved up alongside. The "float" capability goes the farthest in making posts with images aesthetically pleasing.

I would request to provide this feature at least.

You must be having all info and guides for creating/importing custom BB codes, so the following link might not be of any additional use (it talks about image floating to left in particular): [url="http://community.invisionpower.com/resources/documentation/index.html/_/developer-resources/miscellaneous-articles/custom-bbcode-plugins-r125"]Custom bbcode Plugins[/url]

[size="3"]Quoting one of my earlier posts for default font size of the editor:

[indent] [quote name='sumishi' date='05 September 2011 - 08:16 AM' timestamp='1315190285' post='112722']

[size="3"]In the current theme, the IF posts are very long horizontally and difficult to read, when compared to BRF.[/size]

[size="3"]Is it possible to change the default font setting for posting to Verdana/Arial Size 3? It is much easier to read than verdana size 2, and the number of words in a line reduces.[/size]

[size="3"]It has been proven that longer horizontal traversal of eye on written matter leads to lower comprehension and reading difficulty. Note that the usage of columns in newspapers helps in easier reading and faster perusal.[/size]

[size="3"]Meanwhile, if posters could change the font size of replies to 3, it will be better for all[/size]

[/indent][size="3"]rhytha, can the above be implemented?

I stress again that the readability of posts will be better.

You must have noticed my posts to be in bigger font size -- after typing I change the entire post to: font - Arial and size - 3

In case this request is acceptable, then at the risk of overdoing the request part (hope I am not carrying this a little too far), here is where the change is to be done in IP Board file (I am basing this on IP Board v. 3.02, while IF's version in 3.04 -- so there should not be any difference)

File location: [font="Courier New"]public/js/ips.editor.js

Lines: 1114 & 1115

Existing code is:

    ips_frame_html += "    font-family: Verdana, arial, sans-serif;\n";

    ips_frame_html += "    font-size: 9pt;\n";

The above can be changed to (changing both font sequence and size):

    ips_frame_html += "    font-family: Arial, verdana, sans-serif;\n";

    ips_frame_html += "    font-size: 11pt;\n";

The above should work, unless if this setting is only for the display within the editor, but does nothing to the post as such.

Guess it will have to be tried out.
