The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday targeted Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the Telgi scam and demanded a probe by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). The BJP also roped in Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna and his minister Roshan Baig for their alleged involvement in the stamp paper scam.
The allegations against the top Congress leaders were based on a statement by Jayant M Tinaikar, who had exposed scam kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi's network and named the Congress leaders, as reported in a section of the Karnataka newspapers.
BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the allegations made by Mr Tinaikar, who is also a native of Telgi's village, become even more serious because the biggest scam in Indian history is linked with anti-national forces bent on destabilising the economy and polity of the nation. "In such a situation, Ms Sonia Gandhi's name figuring in the scam raises a very serious question. The allegations have been made by no ordinary man but by a person who was instrumental in exposing the Telgi scam," Mr Naqvi said.
He said the allegations get substance from the fact that the Congress had all along been opposing a CBI inquiry into the scam. "They obviously want to keep the sleuths from the investigative agency away to protect their own leaders. The Congress should tell people why it is not asking for a CBI inquiry." The party also demanded that Telgi's custody should be handed over to the CBI from Karnataka police as well as the tapes containing Telgi's confessional statement before former joint commissioner of Bangalore Police. Mr Tinaikar, who claims he has no political affiliations, had alleged that Ms Sonia Gandhi, Mr S M Krishna, AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad, Karnataka Small Scale Industries Minister Roshan Baig have been in cahoots with Telgi. He also named some senior Karnataka police officials for their alleged involvement and said the state officials had tampered with the original tapes before handing them over to the Mumbai Police.
