Sita Ram Goel's perspective on the whole 1857 revolt:
"The Tabligh movement had not been able to make much headway when the last jihãd against the British was launched in 1857.32 The British put it down with a strong hand, and the Ashrãf stood really scared for the first time. A way out of blind alley was found for them by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan who crawled before the British on behalf of his co-religionists. The Aligarh movement he started saw salvation for the Ashrãf in all-out collaboration with British imperialism. Henceforward, and till the second decade of the twentieth century, every member of the Ashrãf fraternity prayed and worked for the permanence of the British rule in India. By 1871 when Sir W.W. Hunter wrote his book, The Indian Musalmans, the Ashrãf had become the most obedient servants of Her Majesty, the Queen of England. "
32This jihãd which was joined by Hindu rebellions on the fringes was named as The Indian War of Independence, 1857 (London, 1909) by V.D. Savarkar. He had yet to learn the history of Islam in India. It is significant that âsecularistsâ and Muslim who hate Savarkar, hail the book as well as its name.

"The last effort made by the mujãhids of all sorts to overthrow the British rule and restore the âMuslim empire in Indiaâ was in 1857. They were able to enlist Hindu support on a large scale because of reasons in which we need not go here. But this grand jihãd was also defeated, and its leaders had to seek shelter in the Hindu kingdom of Nepal. The last Mughal emperor ended his days of disgrace in far off Rangoon. Ishtiq Husain Qureshi names this period as that of the âlowest depths of broken prideâ.

All kinds of Muslim fanatics were involved in this revolt and their only objective was to use the gullible Hindus as cannon fodder to regain the long gone glory, just a few years before Maharaja Ranjit Singh's forces smashed the moron Syed Ahmad Barelvi's wahabbi Jihad who was killed in the first ever battle he fought when Kunwar Sher Singh stormed his citadel, his disciples and other fanatics were doubtless part of the 1857 revolt.
