Central ministers Arjun Singh and P Chidambaram flew down to Chennai last week to attend Madras Universityâs 150th anniversary, presided over by President Abdul Kalam. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who spoke in Tamil, singled out Singh for special praise for introducing 27 per cent reservation nationally. The CM declared that the HRD Minister had been as focused as his namesake from the Mahabharat when shooting an arrow. The crowd clapped enthusiastically to the references to Singh. But he himself could not make out what was being said about him until President Kalam, who was sitting two seats away, leaned across and translated. For some reason the two sitting on either side of Singh, Karunanidhiâs son M K Stalin and Chidambaram, did not choose to interpret the TN CMâs words.
