A culture or tradition is passed down as a meme. Religion claims to be derived from universal (natural) laws and passes down only as Revelation; that is, Religion is "discovered". This is the critical distinction. The application of Reason or Logos to the domain of Tradition was the original error.
Of course, we can draw out a history of religion. This is a different matter.
