Thank you Ramana.

India has been a polynation and people with different practices lived harmoniously. But now we find hundreds of political parties promising to give better life to the people. In course of that they exploit the sentiments of as many groups as possible for their political milage.

So India might be developing in science and technology but so far as administration of justice is concerned, there is a great degeneration. The purpose of the administration of justice is to promote peace and tranquilty in the society.

But as we see suicide rate(per laikh popuation) in India has doubled in preceding 25 years and the rise goes unabated.

So in respect of harmony, health and happiness we shall continue to be loser. What is the way out?

regards

There is a whole book written on warrior sAdhus by Lorenzen, which of course approaches the whole matter from a Western anti-Hindu bias. But you may still look up the book for the wealth of data Lorenzen has gathered on various shaiva groups. Briefly the Nagas are actually members of the orthodox sannyAsi fraternity established by shri shaMkara-bhagavatpAda, the advaitAchArya know as dashanAmI. They belong to giri and sarasvati sect of the dashanAmI. Ramakrishna Paramhamsa is supposed to have studied advaita under one such Naga. Under the islamic tyrany the Nagas grew increasingly militaristic and were indeed involved in fierce fights against different Islamic chief. However, they were also involved in conficts with other Hindus at times. Some say this phase saw decline in their yogic and philosophical orientation. Despite the what the secularists say the Nagas clearly provided safe havens for the oppressed Hindus via their military successes in the Bundelkhand region. There is also an early report of sAdhus fighting Timur when sought to defile Ganga with blood of Hindus, but we do not know who exactly they were.

Of course other dashanAmIs were also involved in political activties like vidyAraNya who was instrumental in the foundation of Vijayanagara. Then there was swami rAmadas a vaiShNava sadhu who helped shivaji and Swami brahmendra in Bajirao' s times.

Suresh Mohapatra, an IAS official who is the chief administrative officer of the temple, told HT: “We had received around $45,000 from Ziggler in 2000-03. But the recent donation of around $400,000 is the highest amount ever to have donated by any individual or group to the shrine."

Maxim is bound to be a big hit in India ... it will still be bought by the affluent lad as are several other magazines named and unnamed in your editorial piece ... after all, as rightly stated, the affluent Indian lad is NO DIFFERENT from his peers in the developed westernised world ... after all, the relative higher levels of affluence coupled with constant exposure to western literature and internet will impel him to do so. If the lad mag is purchased, then it can by no stretch of imagination be called influence ... it has been a choice (good or bad) exercised by the affordable eligible ... only regret is that India could do well to see more thought-provoking media rather than stuff as Maxim.

It's funny to see most of the people venting their fury and frustration are all outside India in the USA or Europe. Hypocrites! What do you mean western influence? You get out of India to enjoy the benefits of "western influence", but then you want India to stay the way it was so that you could go back home to shed some of the inferiority complex you got living in the western world.
Rohith, usa

I don't know why some people here are seeing this as a new influence on Indian men. Internet, Satellite TV, magazines like Cosmopolitan already brought western culture to Indian households and men. This isn't something new.

I see India going the same route as Korea/Singapore/China and other South-Asian countries ... Best part of oriental culture is getting replaced with the worst part of Western society ...

Those days are long gone when you could sit down with the family both the young and the older generation and watch a nice Hindi Movie not having to worry about the sex scenes that might just suddenly appear. Gone are the days of the good old films like Mother India and Heer Rhanja. I'm young myself but sex in Hindi films is a big no. I don' find it appealing whatsoever

People should not pass judgment on what people can and cannot read. It is the very essence of democracy. The right to choose. If people are offended, don't read the magazines.

VHP is right. Decadence is assailing Indians from many directions.. movies, magazines, filthy talk in the streets where Hindu women are targetted for rape, seduction and conversion blight..etc. Where is the end? Decent citizens and BBC like media need to safeguard the interests of the weak and vulnerable Indian women and ....of course men too. AIDS epidemic is partly one big reason why this sort of filth must be pre-empted out.

Puritanism and permissiveness have both co-existed in India's culture. Hindu religion has ascetic and tantric (permissive) sects. Thousand years of Islamic influence, Victorian hypocrisy and Gandhi's strict, almost pathological, puritanism are now giving way to the 'any thing goes' post-capitalist western culture. But who cares? 80,000 English-speaking youth are but a demographic drop in the billion plus Indian multitude.

I know I'm in the minority when I say this - but this is just sad. The influence of Western decadence and this society of instant gratification has taken hold in the long-standing conservative roots of Indian culture. The gradual adjustment to openness about sex and dating in Indian culture is not something that should be embraced, but should (in my opinion) continue to be shunned and looked down upon. It seems that it's only a matter of time before promiscuity will be envied by those of the Indian ethnicity, and a man or woman's modesty will be frowned upon. This magazine only speeds up the process.

If Indians wanted to act and behave like English lads then they should not have chased the British out.
Dr. Karthigeyan Subramaniam, U.S.A

There is already enough 'sex' around for Indian men to enjoy without the need for a lads mag. I am Indian myself and spent 10 months in India in 2004 and was shocked at the lack of censorship of TV programming - I have seen films/foreign sitcoms showing explicit sexual scenes/vulgar language at 730am in the morning! Also, Indian men in India need to learn to respect women first, instead of just 'ogling' at them - there is already enough semi clad women on Indian TV and media, so the addition of a 'lads mag' is no big deal.

It's high time the men of India were enlightened. Im all for it, if it means they manufacture males that are more in touch with the real world.
Preeti Gour, czech republic

I am disgusted that India is being portrayed as a sex mad country. With my recent trip to India I was absolutely shocked with the amount of sexual scenes in films. My partner Diane was shocked as she remembered films as clean and down to earth, there are no way, these films is for family viewing. I believe India needs to concentrate on family values and less on these sex made films which put false hope in young children of society.

well if girls had Elle, cosmo et al, and we didn't read about caste issues there, then why should the "intelligent" man get Maxim. I agree it's an economic thing but I also feel that you can't restrict the audience to call center guys. There must be others who just want to read something that caters to male Jockeys rather than girls' hair removal gadgets. As far as models and bikini are concerned-Indians were always- or are-shameless oglers, even hypocritically so!

Here we go again. We are seeing westernization infiltrate another aspect of Asian society. What is scary about India, however, is how susceptible it is to English and American pop culture. Market liberalization may be boosting the Indian economy and allowing the country to charter new territories, but you only have to look at the United States and the UK to see how these things eventually come around and bite you in the rear. I hope the leaders of India know what they are getting themselves into.
cass, usa

Although this format works well in the the UK, I'm not sure it will be as successful in India. If the magazine sticks to gadgets and lifestyle etc then it will be fine but any attempt to venture into discussions about sex and sexuality will fall flat on their face because such subjects are still taboo in India. When such mags were launched in France, again, they seemed out of place in a country which is open about sex and (hetero)sexuality. I think they work best in the UK and USA, countries which maintain a strange mix of private openness and burning shame about sex.

QUOTESeers to meet in Delhi today
- By Syed Akbar
Hyderabad, June 22: With instances of religious conversions on the rise in the country, Visakhapatnam-based Sri Swarupanandendra Swami of Sri Sarada Peetham has launched a nationwide campaign to mobilise the support of Hindu seers to protect the Vedic dharma.

Sri Swarupanandendra Swami will hold a series of meetings with Hindu religious scholars and sankaracharyas for two days from Friday in New Delhi to chalk out a strategy to stop Hindus from converting to other religions. During his stay in New Delhi he is scheduled to meet, among others, Sri Swami Jayendrananda Maharaj and Sri Swami Prabhavananda Maharaj.

More than two dozen seers are expected to participate in the meeting. Later, the Swamiji will hold a conclave of Hindu seers for three days from June 25 onwards in Haridwar.

Prominent swamis including Sri Vidyanandagiri, mahamandaleshwar of Kailash ashram, Rishikesh, and Sri Medhananda Puri Maharaj, mandaleshwar of the same ashram, will be present. The Sarada Peetham will launch a campaign all over the country after mobilising support from Hindu seers of various cults.
"The idea of a nationwide campaign is to protect the Hindu dharma from attacks from different quarters. Attempts are being made to weaken Hinduism. Religious conversions and preaching of non-Hindu religions in Hindu holy places are on the rise. We will educate Hindus and remind them of the ancient values of our Sanatan Dharma," the swami observed.

The Sarada Peetham also plans to hold a meeting of sadhus and sants in Hyderabad on September 10 as part of the campaign. The programme was originally scheduled for June 30, but had to be postponed to September 10 as swamiji will be busy mobilising support of other Hindu seers in north India, a spokesperson of the peetham said.

Hindu religious scholars have expressed anger over preaching of non-Hindu religions in Tirumala and Simhachalam. The police had to intervene and take into custody the preachers in both the places recently.

Friends,

Is Dharma our highest belief?

Are there beliefs or concepts in our tradition more superior than that?

What do you regard as our tradition's greatest fact or myth or belief that timelessly inspires? Or even apart from our tradition, what do you regard as the golden state - something worthy of pride or emulation? What is the one historical or mythical moment you are proud of?

Thanks.
Ever since the RD's rating on Mumbai at rank number 35 + , way down in the order of courtesy and politness, there is a huge reaction to this report.

Does it really matter what the world thinks about " politness" of any Indian city ?
And, many of those who have travelled to Paris or Brusseles or several of those European cities, would consider them as the rudest in the world.
Perhaps yet another biased opinion on the commercial capital of India, right around the time the Indian economy is pacing at its best !
Well I guess there are different standards in measuring politeness, I guess its politeness for some to see people looting each other and gangs roaming free in New Orleans during Katrina but its rudeness to see people in Mumbai coming together and helping each other out when Mumbai was flooded last year (and yes this is despite the divisie and demonic caste system).
QUOTEWhat is the one historical or mythical moment you are proud of?
The one historical moment I am proud of more than any other moment was when the Marathas under Raghunath Rao planted the Saffron flag at Attock in 1758.
Personally, I think Urban Indians are very rude. Majority of them don't care. Same behavior they show when they move out of country.

They don't care even person is lying on road after road accident. People will just pass. India is very densely populated and everyone fighting for their own survival, in between they forget surrounding or others.

Indians are very rude with strangers. In Western culture it is other way round.
I consider myself well traveled. Being female, never had any major problem traveling outside India, except in France where people don't help outsiders or especially Asians. They are rude or just French.
But in India, traveling alone is a nightmare.

I remember in one day I faced so many rude encounters that it came in TOI 3rd page.

Yes, I agree why we should care what west says. But we have responsibility to fix fast decline in Indian civic culture and its time we should start caring about our surrounding and people.

In India, there is lack of respect towards law and law enforcement agency.
People don't hesitate dropping garbage outside there house, expecting cow or other animal will have excellent feast.
