Twirp : Terrorist Wahabi Islamic Republic Pakistan 2
Barelevi movement had weaken after mutiple suicide attack in last 4-5 years. Lal Masjid action brought stronger Taliban and in more acceptable form. I think we are seeing biggest change in Paki Islamic nation. Same is happening in India. Don't forget they are linked with each other by madarsa and marriages. Whatever will happen in Pakistan will have worse form of effect in India because Indian leadership is brain dead .
I think you are talking about the Ahl-e-hadith and not the Barelvi movement unless they are the same.

Zardari suffering from mental problems: ReportQUOTEZardari was diagnosed with a range of psychiatric illnesses, including dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder, the 'Financial Times' reported, citing court documents filed by his doctors.

In fact, his illnesses were said to be linked to the fact that he spent 11 of the past 20 years in Pakistani prisons fighting corruption allegations, during which he also claims to have been tortured, the report said.

According to the documents, Philip Saltiel, a New York- based psychiatrist, found in March 2007 that Zardari's detention had left him suffering from "emotional instability" and memory and concentration problems. "I do not foresee any improvement in these issues for at least a year," he wrote.

Stephen Reich, another psychologist, had said Zardari was unable to remember even birthdays of his wife and children, was persistently apprehensive and had thought about suicide.

REVIEW & OUTLOOK : Pakistan's Priorities

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL ASIA
August 27, 2008

Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (N) resigned from the governing coalition Monday, the same day that Asif Ali Zardari's ruling Pakistan People's Party outlawed the Taliban and vowed to fight terror harder. That's all you need to know about the priorities of the two parties.

Mr. Sharif, a former prime minister, has always favored dialogue over military action against Pakistan's militants. His alliance with the PPP was based on expediency, not a meeting of minds. After February elections, he agreed to support the PPP's Prime Minister pick in exchange for control over his home state of Punjab. Both parties wanted to oust then-President Pervez Musharraf. Last week, they did so.

Now that's done, Mr. Sharif is showing his true colors. He resigned from the governing coalition Monday in protest over the treatment of judges fired by Mr. Musharraf last year. Mr. Sharif wants the judges -- including Supreme Court Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry -- restored immediately, as the PPP promised in March. He says the government is backtracking. Mr. Sharif is, in effect, setting himself up as a political martyr for democracy.

This is misleading at best. The PPP is likely to restore most of the judges to their former seats. The PPP is worried most about the restoration of one judge : Mr. Chaudhry. The former activist chief justice is a highly politicized figure, given his leading role in last year's protests, which eventually brought down the Musharraf government.

There are personal interests at work here, too. Mr. Chaudhry harbors no love for Mr. Musharraf, and might take action to roll back the former President's executive order that pardoned crimes of politicians -- including Mr. Zardari. Mr. Sharif might also expect Mr. Chaudhry to clear away legal barriers for a third run at prime minister. The best solution here is to appoint a non-partisan chief justice.

Regardless, now is not the time to haggle over one judge. On Thursday, 67 people were killed by suicide bombers outside a weapons factory near Islamabad. Since then, more than 50 people have died in clashes in the Swat valley. Yesterday, the U.S.'s top diplomat in Peshawar narrowly escaped an assassination attempt outside her home.

Mr. Sharif says he doesn't want to topple the government, and he probably won't, for now. The PPP is drawing support from smaller parties to keep its ruling majority. But it can't afford to let Mr. Sharif guide the debate on the country's priorities. The PPP needs to make clear that without security, there will be no such thing as a democratic Pakistan.

Comments : Zardari being the US "Lapdog", the US State Dapartment is doing its best to discredit Nawaz Sharif and Ex-Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry so that Zardari can be kept in the Islamabad Gaddi.

I look forward to "Interesting Times"!

A Pakistani man walks over the rubble of a collapsed house after heavy fighting between militants and Pakistani forces in Swat valley. -AFP

ISLAMABAD : Pakistani Taliban will continue attacks during the fasting month of Ramadan, rejecting a government announcement it would halt military actions in the northwest, a Taliban spokesman said on Sunday.

Violence has surged in Pakistan in recent weeks with the military battling al Qaeda- and Taliban-linked fighters in three different parts of the northwest.

The militants have responded with suicide and remotely detonated bomb attacks on the security forces and civilian targets.

Deteriorating security has coincided with a faltering economy and political upheaval, as the resignation of unpopular President Pervez Musharraf on Aug. 18 was followed a week later by a split in the ruling coalition.

'It's a joke. It isn't a matter of holy or unholy. All months are holy. If they want to end fighting, it should be permanent,' Muslim Khan, Taliban spokesman in the Swat Valley, told Reuters by telephone.

'We want enforcement of Sharia laws and will continue our struggle. We haven't got instructions from our top leadership to stop fighting. If they do (order a halt) then we certainly will.'

Pakistan's government had said on Saturday that security forces would suspend operations from Sunday night for Ramadan, which ends at the beginning of October, but would retaliate if attacked.

Worries about security and politics has unnerved investors who have sent Pakistani financial markets skidding lower. The country's main share index has fallen about 36 percent this year.

According to government estimates, up to 300,000 people have fled from fierce clashes between security forces and violent militants in the tribal region of Bajaur on the Afghan border.

Many displaced people have moved to temporary shelters set up in various towns outside the region, where despite government and foreign aid agencies' efforts, shortages of food and medical supplies and poor sanitation are common complaints.

The United States and other allies have been concerned the government led by assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's party might be less committed to the unpopular war against militancy after the resignation of firm ally Musharraf.

Washington says al Qaeda and Taliban militants have been given shelter by Pakistani allies in ethnic Pashtun tribal lands on the Afghan border and from there not only carry out attacks on both sides of the border but plot violence in the West.

Terrorism has left psychological scars on military, civilians alike’

ISLAMABAD : The government will support setting up of a modern psychotrauma research centre to deal with the psychological effects of terrorist attacks, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Saturday. Inaugurating the first international conference on psychotrauma, the premier said “we will ensure the implementation of the Plan of Action as proposed by the conference to deal with the serious issue”. The people of Pakistan have been traumatised by some of the worst terrorist attacks in the history. “However the nation has the resilience and the courage to stand up to such challenges,” Gilani told the participants of the conference titled, “Trauma in the changing world; challenges and opportunities”. Gilani said the Pakistan Army was at the forefront in the war against terrorism and was confronting this trauma daily. app

China press Pakistan for immediate release of missing engineers

BEIJING : China has demanded to Pakistan that two Chinese engineers gone missing along Pak-Afghan border should immediately be released.

It may be recalled that two Chinese engineers, driver and guards went missing along Pak-Afghan border on last Friday.

Economy’s freefall to a default : Farrukh Saleem

ISLAMABAD : Of the 192 members of the United Nations, Pakistan’s sovereign debt is now the riskiest. For the week ending Aug 29, Government of Pakistan bonds overtook Argentina’s to be the most unsafe for investment.

In London, where Credit Default Swaps (CDS) are while the price to insure the Government of Pakistan-guaranteed debt skyrocketed to $950,000 — something that has never happened before — Pakistan’s debt is now the priciest to insure (read : the London market is contemplating a default-like scenario).

Pakistan’s total foreign debt and liabilities have now crossed the $45 billion mark. ‘Pakistan: Could the Political Chaos Lead to Sovereign Default?’ a report by Citibank, asserts “if Pakistan opted to default, it would have to reschedule all of its debts, which amounts to $2.6 billion in self-issued bonds and $13.9 billion in bilateral debt”. The report expects the “Pakistani rupee’s fall to continue in light of government inaction and the break-up of the government coalition”.

Pakistan is teetering on the brink of default. The rupee has lost some 20 per cent of its value over the past quarter and the KSE-100 Index is down a whopping 45 per cent. Pakistan cannot do without the IMF, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Islamic Development Bank and another Saudi oil facility.

On the internal front, things are even more critical. By the end of August, inter-corporate circular debt had soared to a colossal Rs400 billion. The government owes oil marketing companies Rs84 billion on account of price differential claims (PDC).

The Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) is owed Rs150 billion. The Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) owe Pepco Rs75 billion. The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) is holding back the payment of Rs56 billion. Several Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have threatened to encash the government guarantees.

Hubco (1,200 MW), Kapco (1,600 MW) and Uch (586 MW) are unable to produce electricity because of stuck payments with the government. Hubco and Uch, producing 1,786 MW, have put the government on a 30-day notice to pay their arrears of Rs66 billion or they would turn their plants off.

Pakistan is facing an acute solvency crisis. What happens after a country defaults on its debt obligations? Confidence, international as well as domestic, collapses, jobs are lost and economic activity takes a severe beating. And we have a part-time finance minister, an almost dummy prime minister and a highly controversial politician poised to become the president. Make your own calculations.

According to reports, the NAB has sought the reopening of the corruption cases pending against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his brother Shahbaz Sharif and other members of the Sharif family. The cases include those concerning the Hudabia Papers Mills, Ittefaq Foundries and Raiwind Farms.
