Assam is witnessing a massive uprising against illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, commonly referred to as 'foreigners'. The State authorities have stepped up their drive to arrest and push back Bangladeshi immigrants,
and student groups are busy identifying suspected foreigners and handing them over to the police.
The spurt in official action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and anti-foreigners activism follows stinging comments by a Gauhati High Court judge in a recent ruling. "Bangladeshi infiltrators have not only intruded into every nook and corner of Assam, but have already become kingmakers," Justice BK Sarma said in his judgement, ordering the police to detain and deport 49 foreigners, among them a Pakistani citizen, who had appealed against the ruling of Foreigners Tribunals.

Terrorists have struck again -- this time in <b>Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and Surat -- sending a reminder that they can strike at will at any place at any time. They have used integrated circuits, timers and chips for the first time in their attacks, revealing that those behind the mayhem are highly educated and technology-savvy.</b>
<b>Another new factor is the use of gas cylinders placed with the bombs that killed 26 persons at the emergency ward of the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad. A similar technique was used last year at Glasgow airport when Indian engineer Kafeel Ahmed, indoctrinated by Al Qaeda, and his accomplice rammed a jeep laden with explosives and gas cylinders into the terminal's wall. The use of integrated circuit chips and gas cylinders has confirmed the suspicion of intelligence agencies that the attacks, though planned and executed by local outfits, have been inspired by an organised, technically-oriented mastermind </b>
<b>The Union Government claims that State Governments were advised to take preventive measures</b> about the likelihood of such terrorist attacks. Unfortunately, <b>all such advisories are only general sermons which anybody without even being in the intelligence set-up can envisage.</b> No specific or actionable intelligence has been provided.
The first salvo was fired by a non-Congress Cabinet Minister after the Union Cabinet Meeting that followed the blast. <b>The Minister was so perturbed that he did not even care for conventional niceties. Another Minister told mediapersons, "I think there is more information in newspapers than what the Home Minister told us (in the Cabinet meeting)."</b>
The political response of the country determines its response to militancy. <b>The only person to come out against terrorism and advocate a bullet-for-bullet policy, apart from Mr LK Advani, is Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.</b> He has said, "How can you initiate talks with terrorists who after attaining training from across the border come to kill you? Either you have to kill them otherwise you will be killed... We may have talks with the neighbouring country, but as far as terrorism goes, there can be no tolerance towards terrorists and they should be dealt with a stern hand."
Unfortunately, <b>whenever a terror incident happens, you can anticipate the standard response and even the language of the leaders. They use the same tone and tenor like "It is a cowardly act" and that "innocents have been targeted" and "very strict action will be taken against the perpetrators"</b>. But the ground reality is that such statements and announcements of compensation by the Government to salve its own conscience and to pay for its failure have become a routine affair till the next terrorist attack.
But the sufferer of all such terror attacks is the common man as the leaders are safe with their huge paraphernalia of security. <b>Steps to improve the situation need to be taken -- at legal, diplomatic and people's level.</b>
At all the sensitive places close-circuit television cameras should be installed. New York has more than 50,000 such cameras. Incidentally, perpetrators of the London bombings in 2005 were nabbed with the help of CCTV recordings. These cameras, apart from keeping a record of suspicious activities of likely terrorists, can also help in detecting incidents of traffic violation, eve-teasing and other crimes like pick-pocketing, chain-snatching and rash driving.
The Union Government should set up world class forensic science laboratories in every State capital, of which there is a woeful dearth, apart from pulling up intelligence agencies for their failures. Tech-savvy terrorists need to be met on their own turf.
<b>The Government is giving an impression of being soft on terrorists. All over the world, including in the oldest democracies, laws have been turned upside down to deal with terrorists. But in India, we still have laws framed by the British on the ground that the old laws are sufficient. It is time to bring in new laws on terrorism, thus putting the onus on suspected terrorists to prove their innocence. Every arrested terrorist must be subjected to narco-analysis test to find out his other colleagues and associates involved in the crime. Political parties naturally play politics in every thing they do. It is for this reason that a MCOCA-type law, which is in force in Maharashtra, has not been allowed in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.</b>
It is imperative that national security should be kept outside the ambit of politics and <b>terrorism should be treated as a national threat and not an excuse for vote-bank politics</b>. We have been hearing for a long time about the need to have a Federal Investigating Agency to investigate crimes like terrorism. The Centre-State conflict over the proposed agency seems specious: If the US can have the FBI despite a full-fledged federal system in which States have far greater autonomy than they do in India, why cannot we have a similar agency?
In fact, the top priority of the FBI is to "protect the US from any terrorist attack". There is simply no such agency in India mandated to take on terrorists at the national level. The CBI, which is primarily meant to deal with corruption, comes in if and when a State refers a case of terrorism to it.
The Union Government can issue an Ordinance creating a federal agency which will function in the States with their consent. In today's situation, there is hardly any State which will not give its consent. The Centre should strike while the iron is hot.
It must be clearly understood that in a country of our size and population it is almost impossible to reach consensus on any issue. But it is the job of the leaders to lead the country and show the will in the national interest.

Such Improvised Explosive (IE) techniques are taught in special forces of advanced countries. So there is some R&D work going on in covert action wings of intelligence agencies. <b>Security plan chalked out ahead of 'Janmashtami'</b>
Mathura (PTI): As temples in Mathura, Vrindaban and other areas prepare for Lord Krishna's birth anniversary, the administration has sketched out safety plan to ensure full-proof security for the devotees expected to gather here at 'Brij Bhumi', the birth place of their diety.
Extra forces from different zones have been called up. A special security strategy is being chalked out for the safety and security of two shrines at Sri Krishna Janmashthan and other temples of Mathura, Vrindavan and Goverdhan, said senior superintendent of police S B Shiradkar.
"Barricading work has already been started at Sri Krishna Janmasthan," he added.
The festival will be celebrated in Mathura, Vrindaban, Goverdhan and Nandgaon on August 24 while in Vrindavan's Ranganath temple, the anniversary will be observed on August 25 and 'Lattha Ka Mela' the following day, according to south Indian tradition, the temple authrorities said.
Apart from cleaning and decoration works, sufficient quantity of milk, curd, herbs and medicines are also being provided to these temples for 'Abhishek (Bathing ceremony)' and other rituals during the occasion.
The idols are being decorated with new Jardozi cloth and various ornaments, they said.
"To ensure proper glimpse of the diety during 'Abhishek', a wooden platform has been raised at the entrance of the temple," Sri Krishna Janmasthan secretary Kapil Sharma said.

These leaders do have a soft influence on Indian middle class and undecided voters. If properly projected they cannot say NO to a statement like -

Centre files fresh affidavit citing involvement of SIMI in Ahmedabad blasts
New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday filed a fresh affidavit in the Supreme Court, citing the involvement of SIMI cadres in the recent bomb blasts in Ahmedabad in Gujarat, seeking to continue the ban on the organisation.
The court on August 6 stayed an order passed by the Special Tribunal, set up under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, quashing the Centreâs February 7 notification banning the Students Islamic Movement of India. As the tribunal order has been stayed for three weeks, the matter is listed for further hearing on August 25.
In its affidavit, the Centre said investigations revealed that the accused in the bomb blasts in Ahmedabad and Surat on July 26 were members of the SIMI. Some of the accused were earlier arrested in 2001. This information was recently made available to the Centre by the Gujarat Government.
Annexing the depositions made by witnesses, the Centre said intelligence sources and secret surveillance by the police made it clear that the accused had nexus with international terrorist outfits. Further, these persons were persistently involved in more than one offence or other unlawful activities and the nature of activities indulged in by the outfit would show secessionist tendencies and the potential damage to the secular fabric of society.
Annexing a list of over 350 terrorist-related cases registered in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal since 2001 and the arrest of over 1,400 SIMI cadres, the Centre said that despite the ban, the outfit had continued with its activities and managed to keep its network alive clandestinely. The organisation was revived through the front outfits, Tahreek-e-Ehyaa-e-Ummat, Tehreek-Talaba-e-Arabia, Tehrik Tahaffuz-e-Sha`aire Islam and Wahadat-e-Islami.
The Centre said the confessional statements of some of the accused revealed that the cadres had secret meetings to mobilise Muslim youth to spread jihad in the entire Indian subcontinent especially in Gujarat, and that they had planned to wage a war against India by indoctrinating and training Muslim youth in the use of arms, ammunition and explosives.
If the unlawful activities of the SIMI were not curbed, it would be detrimental to the peace, integrity and maintenance of the public order, the Centre said.

BJP demands action against Lalu, Mulayam and Paswan
Raipur (PTI): The BJP on Saturday urged the Election Commission to take cognizance of the statements of Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Ramvilas Paswan speaking in favour of SIMI, when the Centre had termed it a terrorist organisation.
"When Centre had told the Supreme Court that about 400 cases are pending against the SIMI, including 60 in the last two years, how the three stalwarts have called it a social organization," BJP national spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here.
SIMI never believe in Indian constitution, and such statements by the heads of the three political parties was a serious matter, Prasad said.
He said the Election Commission should take cognizance of that as political parties have to express confidence on Indian constitution to be registered with the Commission as a political organisation.
Why the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is silent over the statements of two of his ministers calling SIMI a social organization, the BJP asked.
BJP also pulled up the Centre for not providing proof of involvement of SIMI in terrorist activities before the Commission, when it was allegedly behind from the Mumbai train blast to Ahmedabad serial blasts.
However, BSP leaders yesterday visited the village of the person, who was responsible for the killing of 55 people, Prasad wanted to know in which direction the Indian politics was heading towards.

Late night attack on ashram in Orissa's Kandhamal
Swami Laxmananda Saraswati, the 80-year-old monk who spearheaded the anti-conversion movement in Orissa's tribal dominated areas for decades, was shot dead at his Jalespata Ashram under Tumudibandha block in Kandhamal district late Saturday night. Â
Reports reaching Bhubaneswar said a group of 20 to 25 people, armed with guns, barged into the ashram at 9.35 pm and attacked him. They lobbed a hand-grenade and fired indiscriminately. Swami Laxmananda Saraswati and four others who lived in the ashram died on the spot. Among them was a woman.
Director-General of Police Gopal Nanda confirmed the murderous attack on Swami Laxmananda Saraswati's ashram. The police suspect the killers to be Maoists. The district administration has mobilised police force and rushed CRPF companies to the spot. The District Collector and the SP have also rushed to Tumudibandha to take stock of the situation.
Widescale violence is feared in Orissa. People have started resorting to road blockade to ventilate their anger in different parts of the State. People in Dhenkanal district came out openly and blocked the roads.
An alert has been issued and all District Collectors have been asked to maintain strict vigil.
Swami Laxmananda Saraswati had received a letter, threatening that he would be kidnapped from his Chakapada Ashram in Kandhamal district in the next seven days. Ashram authorities received the letter on Friday. It had been posted from Barinipur post office.
They also filed an FIR on Friday. The letter-writer had identified himself as a member of the 'Pahari Group'.
Viswa Hindu Parishad general secretary Gouri Prasad Rath had subsequently sought increased security cover for Swami Laxmananda Saraswati.
<b>Before the police could react, he was shot dead.</b>
<b>Swami Laxmananda Saraswati came to tribal-dominated Kandhamal in 1966. Since then he has been leading a campaign against conversion activities of Christian missionaries. He has also been in the forefront of the campaign against cow-slaughter. It was because of his sustained efforts that thousands of tribals who had embraced Christianity returned to the Hindu fold. </b>
Later, he set up an ashram at Chakpada and a Kanya Ashram (girls residential school) at Jalespata in Kandhmal district. He spent his life promoting literacy and combating conversions in this tribal-dominated district. For this, he earned the wrath of Christian missionaries and was attacked on several occasions.
On December 25, 2007, he was attacked by a section of the Christian community and his security guard was severely injured. Later, clashes erupted in Phulbani and other areas.
Curfew was imposed in Baliguda, Daringbadi and Brahmani Gaon as well as the district headquarters of Kandhamal for more than a month to restore peace. Swami Laxmananda Saraswati's murder could give rise to tension.
Reacting sharply to the ghastly incident, the State BJP president said the culprits should be arrested immediately. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad expressed shock over the killings.

India Drifts Dangerously</b>

India's six percent-plus "impressive GDP growth rate" over the years has drawn much praise from the West, and its "success" has been attributed to the "magical impact" of free-market liberalization and globalization. What it really means, is that India's low-wage-earning labor has begun to replace a section of the high-wage-earning workforce of the West. In the process, India, a nation of 1 billion-plus people stricken with utter poverty, is becoming an economic "powerhouse"âexactly the way China became one, the Indian leaders claim.
However, a visit from one end of India to the other would make one realize that India's GDP growth is driven by only a fraction of its population. Much of the nation remains a picture of rural poverty and urban squalor. Rising social tension because of growing income disparity between a sea of poor and a decent number of middle class, is either not noticed, or ignored, by a callous and rudderless leadership that dots the entire nation. Notwithstanding the illusions of the elites, there are definite signals that some among the many hundreds of millions of poor may not watch the process with benign and dissociated neglect, but instead, could turn violent.
The poverty in India has been exacerbated by the fact that the investors, who are no longer "led" by the powerful and visionary, now invest in those parts of the country where the investment has the maximum potentialâa relative term in the Indian contextâto optimize profit. As a result, regional disparities are growing fast, involving hundreds of millions of people. Nearly all foreign investments in India go to its six most urban states, with 22 other less-developed states virtually ignored. This gap between cities and rural areas is keenly felt in the suburbs of India's cities, particularly New Delhi, the capital.
Poverty Galore
The endless poverty is there for all to see; it is not hidden like it is in China. There is no escaping the fact that a handful of "skilled Indian workers," tied to Western workplaces through telecommunication, will not be able to pull the hundreds of millions out of the grinding poverty they endure. What is needed is leadership at every level, and the most dangerous aspect of India at the present time is that it does not have any.
Lack of leadership hits one square in the face, starting at the municipal level, all the way up to the highest offices in the North Block and South Block of India's capital. These powerful people have little real understanding of what it would take to make India a nation that cares for all of its people; indeed, they have little intent to achieve such a goal, in any case.
To begin with, it must be understood that a large number of people who are "considered" by Indian leaders not to be poorâa gamut that includes communists, socialists, traders, "casteists," agriculturalists, businessmen, and feudal landlordsâare, in reality, abysmally poor. For instance, the minimum income required, as per the World Bank's earlier assessment, to live above the poverty line, for underdeveloped countries like India or China, is about $1 per day or $30 per month (1,410 rupees per month). But the Indian government's poverty line definition, is earning less than Rs. 10 per day, which translates to approximately Rs. 300 (about $7) per month!
Lies and Statistics!
As per the Government of India (GOI), the poverty line for the urban areas is Rs. 296 per month and for rural areas, Rs. 276 per month. According to the GOI, this amount will buy food equivalent to 2,200 calories per day, medically sufficient to prevent death. This is an absurd lieâthat amount of money could not buy even one meal for one person in the citiesânever mind the rest of the family, and the other necessary expenditures of life. And yet, one finds Indian planners busy bringing down the number of poor using this blatant statistical fraud as a yardstick. In fact, there is no housing available in Delhiâand this includes the huge slums that litter the capitalâwhere a family can get shelter for less than Rs. 2,000 per month.
In other words, 450 million Indians live below the poverty line according to the World Bank's old definition of $1 per day per person, or $365 per year; 700 million Indians live below the poverty line based on the World Bank's later definition of a minimum earning of $2 per day per person, or $730 per year, needed for minimum sustenance.
That is not to say that such a distortion was the creation of the present-day Indian leaders. The distortion existed all along, but it has become further distressing in the present light, since a handful of service-sector personnel, carrying out services for the West, have begun to earn significantly more. It is more distressing to note that by earning even twice the amount that puts the individual in the category of "not poor," does not allow him to have one square meal a day in the Indian cities! Less than 25% of all Indian families are left with any surplus at the end of the day to spend on things which are not absolutely essential.
The slogan of the present crop of Indian "leaders" in power is "India Rising," after the previous crop was kicked out of power because of the fraud of their campaign slogan, "India Shining." To say that the country is reaching "new heights" of success is almost criminal. To begin with, India possesses, as it always has, the potential to be a very powerful and economically sound nation. The opportunity to make that happen lies at the doorstep of India's leaders. Seventy-one percent of the populationâ742 million peopleâare below 35 years of age. In other words, India is not a graying nation; it is full of young people. It can be moved with a positive leadership.
But, look at the other figures as well. Almost 94% of India's children drop out of school before completion of the 12th grade. This is largely because of poverty and the lack of opportunities that await them once they get their high school diploma. The successful 6%, the so-called educated youth, go in for a regular college degree, which may not be very relevant in today's context for employment-generation. Seventy-three percent of those graduate from colleges with liberal arts degrees.
Dilapidated Infrastructure
But the Indian leaders do not address these issuesâat least openly. They are keen to show to the Western investorsâand non-resident Indian investors based abroadâthat India is rising and is ready to shine. However, it is not possible to fool all of the people all of the time. While in China, the investors were given a "special place" in the economic process; in India, that is unlikely to happen. India's infrastructure is in an abysmal state. Massive shortfalls in power, water, jammed railroads and roads, and the dwindling number of educated youth threaten India's long-term future, in the hands of these visionless leaders.
India had always been a power-short nation. In the early 1960s, Dr. Homi Bhabha convinced the national leaders that India's economic future lay with development of nuclear power. Almost four decades later, India has very little to show in the production of nuclear power-based electricity, but its scientists and technicians, fighting the heavy odds set up by the nuclear weapons nations, have achieved a great deal of success in mastering the technology. Since the scientists and technicians do not decide on the commercial aspect of utilization of nuclear power, the contribution of nuclear power to India's power industry has been stymied.
India decided on a three-stage nuclear program back in the 1950s, when India's nuclear-power-generation program was set up. In the first stage, natural uranium (U-238) was used in pressurized heavy-water reactors (PHWRs). In the second stage, the plutonium extracted from the used fuel of the PHWRs was scheduled to be used to run fast-breeder reactors (FBRs). The plutonium was used in the FBRs in 70% mixed oxide (MOX)-fuel to breed uranium-233 in a thorium-232 blanket around the core. In the final stage, the FBRs use thorium-232 and produce uranium-233 for use in the third-stage reactors.
As of now, India is by far the most committed nation as far as the use of thorium fuel is concerned, and the scientists of no other country have done as much neutron physics work vis-Ã -vis thorium as Indian nuclear scientists have. The positive results obtained in the neutron physics work have motivated Indian nuclear engineers with their current plans to use thorium-based fuels in more advanced reactors now under construction.
Wasting India's Strengths
Instead of giving the program the necessary push to make this "indigenous" power source the anchor of India's development, the myopic leaders are now thinking seriously, and begging desperately, to get foreign reactors which do not exactly fit into the Indian mix. Moreover, the huge amount of money that would be spent in getting a handful of large commercial reactors would be good enough to fill in some gaps, but would not make a large impact.
First and foremost, it is important for the Indian leaders to understand why Dr. Bhabha started the program that he did, and why some of the best minds in India have spent their lifetimes to bring that program to fruition. For instance, it is not a national secret that most of India suffers an acute shortage of potable water. There are areas where people spend most of the day trying to procure water to keep themselves alive. A recent World Bank report said that, within the next 15 years, India's demand for water will exceed all its sources of supply.
The report, India's Water Economy: Bracing for a Turbulent Future, by John Briscoe, senior water advisor at the World Bank, examined the challenges facing India's water sector and concluded: "Unless water management practices are changedâand changed soonâIndia will face a severe water crisis within the next two decades." What Briscoe put in writing has long been said by Indian water experts, but the Indian "leaders" wrung their hands, brushing aside the obvious.
It is also not a national secret that only a handful of Indian rivers have surplus water. The water shortage is particularly evident in southern India, where the Indian peninsula catchment area is narrow, and rivers have a short west-to-east run. But, southern India, more than any part of the country, except perhaps the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat in the north and west, wants to develop and develop fast. The entire southern part of India is surrounded by seas, and it possesses fertile lands. But, the area survives on the brink of disaster because of lack of water.
This is where the importance of indigenous thorium reactors is to be understood fully. If there were visionaries in India today at the leadership level, they would have grabbed this opportunity with both hands. What India needs, and can develop in no time, are these small 25-50 MW thorium-fuelled reactors for providing power locally and for desalinating seawater in bulk quantities. If the Indian leaders understood what is at stake, there would be plans to set up hundreds and hundreds of those reactors, dotting the sea coasts stretching from Orissa in the east to Gujarat in the west. New Delhi must realize that no foreign manufacturer has any interest in developing these small reactors. But these small reactors, if put to work effectively, would boost India's economic capability once and for all.
Another area where India excelled in the past, and the reason why India is still on its own two feet, is its now much-neglected agricultural sector. Blessed with fertile land like no other country in the world, India is not only self-sufficient in food, but it has the ability to feed a billion others. But, to the visionless leaders of today, the agricultural sector is a problem, because that is where the majority of the poor reside. These agricultural workers, lacking education and neglected to the extreme, remain bound to their land, scraping out means of survival. In the suburbs of metropolitan areas, some of these farmers get the opportunity to sell off their land to the housing developers, and a few of them thus move into a stable life. Otherwise, for most in India's agricultural sector, life is cruel and there exists little opportunity to improve their lot.
For Whom the Bell Tolls
A spate of recent reports indicates that the situation in rural agricultural India is becoming desperate. Over the last five or six years, at least 950,000 farmersânearly a million!âhave committed suicide. Over 850 farmers have committed suicide in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh since May 2004, as government relief efforts prove inadequate. One observer pointed out that currently, seven to eight farmers commit suicide in Andhra Pradesh every day.
What are the reasons behind these mass suicides? Reports indicate that successive crop failures due to five years of drought, exacerbated by such factors as the increased cost of inputs, such as seeds and fertilizers, failure of bore wells, and accumulated debt, have led the farmers to end their lives.
There are no authentic figures on the exact number of farm suicides in Vidarbha, but the Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a farmers' movement, puts the toll at 782, from June 1, 2005 to Aug. 26, 2006. And, in the last three months, there has been a suicide every eight hours.
In Maharashtra, and as well in Andhra Pradesh, the cotton growers are in deep financial trouble and many of them have ended their lives. Agronomists point out that across the country, the average cost of cultivation of cotton is a little more than Rs. 16,000 (about $360) per hectare. With an average productivity of 460 kg per hectare, it costs between Rs. 35 to Rs. 48 per kg to grow cotton. In Vidarbha, the cost of cultivation could go well beyond Rs. 20,000 per hectare, and if marketing cost is added, it exceeds Rs. 22,000.
Among the farmers who committed suicide in the past year, more than 50% were between 20 and 45 years of age (their most productive years), according to a study by the Sakal Newspapers Limited of the two districts, Amravati and Yavatmal, of Vidarbha. The Planning Commission's fact-finding mission members found out that nearly 2.8 million of the 3.2 million cotton farmers in Vidarbha are in default. Of every Rs. 100 borrowed, approximately Rs. 80 goes back in to servicing of old loans. Most of these farmers do not get loans from the banks and instead borrow from loan sharks, who are protected by local- or state-level, politicians.
China Model With a Nasty Twist
What is evident from the way India is being "led," and listening to what the leaders have to say, is that India is trying to become a variation of the "China Model" of economic development, but with a catch. The catch is that while China is scouring the entire world to get raw materials and energy to manufacture "things" that can be sold elsewhere, India is pushing to become a service-sector nation, trying to exploit (as long it lasts) the English-speaking capability of a section of its people. The Chinese manufacturing process necessarily requires modernization and expansion of its infrastructure. China has invested heavily in the transportation and power sectors.
China's push for a cheap-wage-based manufacturing sector, and the Indian leaders' unwillingness to look beyond a handful of English-speaking people as the country's asset, pose a long-term threat to India. Having kept its infrastructure obsolete, India's production costs for "things" are higher than China's. Already, Chinese goods are flooding the market, further weakening India's small and medium-scale manufacturers. It will not be long before Indian entrepreneurs, because of this lack of infrastructure, begin to head northward to set up their shops in China with the purpose of "exporting" to India.
While China still has a long way to go to develop the level of infrastructure (including water, education, and health services) necessary to bring all Chinese citizens to the economic mainstream, Indian leaders took a short cut. Instead of focussing on developing the dilapidated infrastructure, they persisted with the service sector in an attempt to reach economic nirvana. Needless to say, these service-sector jobs do not need as much quality infrastructure as a full-fledged manufacturing economy does.
In other words, bereft of vision and a clarity of purpose to build a nation that is economically sound, Indian leaders have turned the focus on making the country a service-exporting nation. In this economic policymaking process, the leaders draw succor from two segments of the society. First, manufacturers: Successful Indian manufacturers, such as the Tatas and the Mittals, have gone abroad to buy fully functioning facilities that are short of capital. These industrial houses made their money in India and they are now investing abroad. That means they have accepted the government's policy not to develop the infrastructure necessary for building a flourishing and productive manufacturing process. In other words, they have badly compromised.
The other group of supporters of this policy belongs to India's English-speaking middle class. With the "call centers" and other white-collar service-exporting jobs beginning to bring larger sums of money into their pockets, this group has de facto endorsed the government's visionless thrust to expand service jobs. Moreover, members of the middle class, with a little surplus money in hand, are getting addicted to consumption, and distancing themselves further from the poorâand from reality.
There is little doubt that the Indian leaders are now keen to show the "success" this model has achieved. In addition, the growth of computer software technology in India, for which the country is recognized worldwide, has come about not because this technology could be used effectively to "wipe the tears off of every Indian's eyes"âas one of India's greatest sons, Mahatma Gandhi, had aspiredâbut because it would generate a GDP growth and accrue foreign-exchange reserves, which would then allow India "some day" to deal with the poor. But, unlike China's, India's foreign-exchange reserves are small, and even these funds have been temporarily parked in India's profitable stock exchanges. They can vanish in no time. Lack of infrastructure has prevented India from attracting foreign direct investments the way China has done.
However, it is also becoming evident, at least to some Indians, that the foreign exchange earned by these IT companies, and the foreign direct investments that come from abroad, will not be able to make a serious dent in India's poverty-related problems. Although Prime Minister Manmohan Singh claimed that he expects about $150 billion of foreign direct investment (FDI) to come in to alleviate India's infrastructural woes, no one believes him. India is now attracting only $5 billion of FDI a year, and there is a good reason why foreign investors are not keen on putting money into India's decrepit economic infrastructure. The investors have realized that India is not interested in developing the foundation of a flourishing manufacturing sector, but is merely catering to the service-exporting sector, to generate growth and earn foreign exchange quickly.
But the foreign exchange has begun to leave India's shores. For instance, the Tata industrial house, which produces 5 million tons of steel in India, is now ready to spend $6.7 billion to buy Corus Steel of the United Kingdom, which produces more than three times annually what the Tatas produce. Similarly, Ranbaxy, and other Indian pharmaceutical companies, are buying up pharmaceutical manufacturers in Europe and North America for good reasons, but draining foreign-exchange reserves in the process. It is evident that New Delhi, having stymied these manufacturers at home by not building the infrastructure to support them, has made available to them large chunks of foreign-exchange reserves to allow them to expand their business globally.
Social Tensions
These developments are indicative of the problems that were piled up by these leaders adopting an economic policy which has virtually no future for the poor. It is altogether another matter to make Indians believe that the poor will accept the new situation quietly. Already, anger against economic disparity has begun to show its fangsâalthough New Delhi prefers to ignore them. If the suicides of such a large number of farmers have not awakened the nation, Indian leaders feel they have little cause to worry about the rise of extremist forces in the most poverty-stricken areas of the country.
However, that could be a grave mistake for which generations to come may have to pay. Violent militant cells have been set up virtually all around India. New Delhi talks about them only when those militants carry out bloody actions, such as the explosion of bombs on the Mumbai railroad last July.
It is also ignored that some parts of India are reeling under Maoist-terrorist threats. The Indian Maoists, known in the 1960s as Naxalites, have proliferated. Throughout the virtually ungoverned state of Bihar and the jungles of Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and Andhra Pradesh, Maoists have emerged as the "law." They have developed large dumps of arms, and intelligence reports suggest that they are not only working hand-in-glove with their Nepali counterparts, but have developed a close "business relationship" with the "mother of all terrorists"âthe Tamil Tigers.
It is widely recognized that the Maoists in India have taken control of a huge swath of land running from the state of Bihar in the north all the way to the state of Tamil Nadu in the south, encompassing in the process highly underdeveloped areas of Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, and Andhra Pradesh. One common thread that runs through this massive stretch of land is: underdevelopment and poverty.

Islam should govern our lives, be it in our political thought, socio-economic plans, culture or the ongoing movement. The creed of socialism and secularism should not touch our lives and we must be totally governed by the Quran and the Sunnat (precedents from Prophet Mohammed's life)."</b>
<b>This is a clear admission of the grand plan that the Islamist terrorists in India have. Azadi is just a word to be used and abused as per their convenience. The principal plan is to implement the rule of Shari'ah all over India and push the envelope of pan-Islamisation. </b>
Now that Mr Geelani has finally admitted that he, along with hundreds of thousands of his followers, is Pakistani, it begs the question: What are they doing in India?
Now is the time that Mr Geelani and his followers should buy one-way tickets to Muzzafarabad, board the Caravan-e-Aman bus and leave India for good. If they are Pakistanis and Pakistan is theirs, they have no business to stay here in India.
Sixty years ago, India sacrificed a large piece of its body and soul to make a new country, Pakistan, to accommodate all those Muslims who did not want to stay in India. Millions of Muslims at that time made their choice and moved to Pakistan. Those who stayed back also made a conscious decision to stay back and most of them are content and happy. But those who are still in India and for some reason are not happy, should stop whining and should instead go to Pakistan - the country that was created solely for them in the first place.
In case Mr Geelani and his followers do not go to Pakistan, then they ought to be tried for sedition. It is not at all surprising that the Government of India is not enforcing the anti-sedition law and bringing charges against Mr Geelani and other separatist leaders from the Kashmir Valley. In fact, it is continuing its appeasement policies towards Kashmiri Muslims. If the UPA Government had shown the courage in enforcing laws of the land, we would not be counting the bodybags in Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Delhi and other places all over the country.
The latest Delhi bombings clearly expose the Government's appeasement policies that are now coming back to haunt the nation and its citizenry. Terrorists belonging to SIMI could not have grown into such a force if successive Governments would have taken the tough decisions needed to save the nation. Terrorists need to be treated like terrorists and not like misguided youth. No one among these terrorists is misguided. Instead they are all highly-educated professionals. They have not faced any economic discrimination. But they are all on a mission to forcibly enforce the pan-Islamic agenda.
Our nation is not only facing the threat of Islamic terrorists but that posed by pseudo-secular opinion-makers as well. It is tragic that some leading opinion-makers are speaking the separatists' language and advocating referendum in Kashmir. It seems that these so-called intellectuals are unable to see the shrapnel-ridden dead bodies of innocent Indians. Kashmir is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg -- the iceberg is much bigger and has a sinister form and content.
It is sad that these opinion-makers cannot see this danger, unless they are willingly ignoring the obvious. Such people themselves are as much a danger to the nation as the separatists and the politicians who believe in appeasement policies. We need to be on guard and defeat the enemies within our borders - enemies that have grown into monstrous devils.

Aashrams and temples are spiritual centers of Sanaatan Dharm; those can serve well as focal points, the nucleus for most activity. You can organize Satsang at temples and Aashrams for awakening nationalism within participants and for discussing the urgent need for Hindu unity for protection of Sanaatan Dharm Hinduism.
Remember that if you wish to protect Sanatana Hindu Dharm you need to adopt the ways advocated by Sanatana Hindu Dharm. You cannot adopt the ways and means of other religions just because they seem to work quickly in todayâs environment. Yes they do but their effect will be short lived.
Sanatana Hindu Dharma has been Sanatana (eternal) and it will remain Sanatana (eternal). But then to keep it Sanatana (eternal) you have to work for it. You have to sweat it out. Nothing comes for free. You have to pay the price.

Actually, it is more important because when this is ignored and our focus is inwardly, the external Adhaarmic forces grow so much that they charge the whole environment.

There are plenty of so-called intellectuals of today, at least in our country, with a very powerful vocal cord which is heard in every corner of our life style. Studentsâ collective strength can be awesome. When students respond to the need for protection of Sanaatan Hindu Dharm it can have far reaching effect. It can leave its impression on the current events. More importantly, it can imprint inerasable marks in the minds of the participant students. That will guide them through their future plans and later day activities when these students of today will become the householders of tomorrow.

No doubt that Dhaarmic people must increase their Dhaarmic tendencies, and destroy the Adhaarmic tendencies âwithinâ them. But it is no less important that they destroy the external Adhaarmic Aasuric forces surrounding them. Actually, it is more important because when this is ignored and our focus is inwardly, the external Adhaarmic forces grow so much that they charge the whole environment. And no one can fully remain unaffected by the environment that is charged with Adhaarmic propensities, if they are part of that environment. This is where the environment takes precedence over inner self. First, the environment must be cleaned, and then the focus should be turned inward. But most often those who preach often preach the opposite. Thus, they help grow the good within few, which helps not the humanity on the whole. These few, who grow inwardly, tend to become indifferent towards the external environment. As the number of such people increases, the human race gets polarized. Many with Adhaarmic propensities stay together on one side, while many others with Dhaarmic propensities turn indifferent; thus, those with Adhaarmic tendencies forge ahead unabated.
For a Student and for a Householder the first responsibility is towards the Hindu society of which he or she is a part of, and therefore, his or her resources should first be employed towards cleaning the external environment surrounding them. Once that is ensured only then the focus should be inwards and self-centered for uplifting the Self or self realization whatever name you may want to assign such activity.
For Sannyaasins self realization is the goal. But in a time like ours when Sanaatan Dharm itself is in danger, their first duty is towards the society which looks after their upkeep. Think of it this way: if this society does not remain intact and well guided by Sanaatan Dharm, who will then take care of their upkeep. If they themselves have to take care of their food, cloth, shelter will they be able to devote themselves fully towards self realization?
