<b>Evolution of the Semitic faiths</b>
By MSN Menon

The Bible remains an interesting document on how the idea of God evolved.

The Bible presents us with a succession of gods, each a striking improvement on the previous ones, making it possible for us to have a nobler and deeper vision of God. But it all began with tribal gods and human sacrifices. The Semitic faiths are almost ashamed of their gods today. They prefer their Prophets.

The God of Noah was not the God of Job. Noah’s God was an angry and punishing God. The God of Job was argumentative and philosophic. Job raised the problem of evil, but left it unexplained. Micah threw out Noah’s God. He did not left it unexplained. Mioach threw out Noah’s God. He did not even preserve Job’s God. He denounced blood sacrifice. He asks the Jews: “What doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God?”And when we come to Jesus, he overturned everything. He was for non-violence. His God was a God of compassion, mercy and forgiveness. Allah is still a punishing God. His evolution has been very slow.

The Jews invented the myth that only one religion could be true. That is their religion. They invented another myth: that they were the “chosen people” of God. These assertions had calamitous consequences for the world, and to Jews in particular.

Judaism gave birth to Christianity and Islam. It gave to Christianity its ethical passion and a sense of superiority. The Romans gave it their organising ability and the desire for world domination. And Judaism gave to Islam its dogmatism and fanaticism.

After Emperor Constantine, Christianity became intolerant of all other faiths. Life became a “fleeting show on earth”, beauty a “mere pleasure” and a “temptation” and abstinence the highest “virtue.” St. Augustine gave the dictum: “If any man come to me and hate not his father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” Here is the source of Christian intolerance. With that Europe went into the Dark Ages. Reformation broke the religious spell and Renaissance brought back the spirit of free enquiry.

With Renaissance the scientific age was also born—the new world of Copernicus and Columbus, of Luther and Calvin of Galileo and Descartes. The sky changed with Copernicus and the earth with the explorers! Man moved from the religious certainties of the past to scientific certainties of the mechanical world of Newton. The infallibility of the Church gave way to scientific reasoning. Many of the restrictions men lived by gave way to libertine morals. Renaissance broke up the power of the Papacy and established Protestantism.

The history of the last five hundred years saw a simultaneous growth of political freedom, economic prosperity, intellectual advancement and social reform, but the period also saw the steady decay of traditional religion, morality and social order.

There was more violence, oppression and cruelty than there used to be. Man tried to control his conduct by external means and not by self-control.

Humanism is the religion of the majority of intellectuals today. In Einstein’s world, there was no need for a Personal God. Matter and spirit were found to be one. Dualim was dead. Yes, after two thousand years of dogmatic belief that matter and spirit are opposed to each other!

Uncertainty, a fundamental agnosticism, a sense of uneasiness that we are hastening confusedly to unknown ends —these are the characteristic features of our times. The future is incalculable.

In all cultures, the greatest gift of life is the dream of a higher life. The pursuit of perfection has been the dominant motive of human life. And yet look at the present scene: today the greatest menace to mankind comes from religious fundamentalism. And Islam is the prime cause. It is one religion which has refused to reform its way of life and thought.

One used to think that with the growth of education, there would be greater understanding among peoples. This was a false hope. The growth of Nazism led to the worst Holocaust of history and the Cold War showed that it is not easy to establish peace on earth.

Today we talk about the conflict of civilisations. As is to be expected, there are many well-meaning people who dismiss it as wild thinking. But it is real. It is as real as Nazism and the Holocaust.

The tales from Panchatantra are called tales of Bidpa in Western Europe. And are purveyed as that of an early church saint. If I recall correctly Buddha was also canonized early on.

Dhu, You need ot read Freud's "Moses and monotheism" He is clear that all those religios are based on political needs and an idea of universal empire. He traces the origins to the 18 Dynasty Pharoh who for whatever reasons acquired an Empire beyond Egypt and needed to craft a religoion that was beyond Egypt's theogny. And his intimate was Thutmose who took the religion to the frontier tribes some of whom were enslaved. Thutmose is Moses. They latter killed him in revolt as his version was harsh to their sensibilities and that led to the forty years of wandering. Very gripping. So it could be the same type of rehash a few centuries later.

that particular panchatantra narrative shows a lomdi pretending to be paramatma, ie a dhongi; but there is no inkling of theology present. If we take right "belief" view of the narrative, we will conclude that "religion" is a tool for control which is a familiar allegation from the west. But the panchatantra narrative is not about that theme at all; in fact, it is showing how to go about the world where all kinds of characters abound and how to deal with so many varied situations and not at all about nature of paramatma.

If same narrative was transported to a religious culture, it would become theology - that is, an exposition about who is this paramatma that the lomdi is insinuating.

Many nursery rhymes were actually about the christian medieval world - the death, tortures and diseases therein. I can only partly recall the meaning of one at the moment:

<i>Ring-a-ring-a-roses</i> = the symptoms of the plague were a circle/ring of pinkish or reddish spots on the body. I think these appeared on people's stomachs and possibly elsewhere on their persons?
<i>A pocket full of posies</i> (forgot how they explained this line)
<i>A'tishue A'tishue</i> (the sneezing symptom that starts the illness)
<i>And we all fall down</i> (everyone catches the contagion after the first person's infection - indicated by the first couple of sneezes above. None is spared, all dead)

Similar considerations hold good elsewhere. Despite the presence of the voluminous Subhashita and Dharmashastra literatures, <b>India has hardly produced noticeable tracts and sustained reflections on ‘ethics’. </b><b>There is no equivalent of an ‘Ethica Nichomachea’, let alone a ‘Summa Theologica’ in the Indian intellectual traditions. </b>This does not mean that there is no evidence for intellectual reflections; on the contrary. Yet, certain kinds of reflections are noticeable for their absence.

<b>The Saint, The Criminal And The Terrorist

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->Actually, the act goes beyond transformation: <b>terrorism is trans-substantiated crime. “Trans-substantiation” refers to the miraculous transformation of some particular substance into another one. (During the Mass, for instance, Roman-Catholics believe that bread and wine are transformed into the body and blood of Christ.) </b>This happens in the case of terrorism as well: crime becomes morally praiseworthy. It does not concern so much a particular crime, but rather the transformation of the entire domain of crime. This trans-substantiation results in the re-presentation of crime as morally praiseworthy. We suggest that what brings about this “miracle” is an ideology, which we would like to call “the ideology of crime.” It is our hypothesis that such an ideology exists today and that acts of crime can become acts of terrorism because of what this ideology does and how it does so.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

We know that Trans-substantiation as portrayed in the roman gospels encompasses getting the colonized to feast (ironically) on their own awaited Messiah, whose identity is actually overtaken (again ironically) by the colonial power. This would suggest that one function of the gospels was to normalize the crimes of the colonial power (as terrorism)..

Dhu, Again try to get hold of Freud's "Moses and Montheism". Its on Amazon's used books. The book is unputdownable in view of the current problems. He explains the blood letting of Jahve.

Also see the works of <b>Eduard Meyer </b>on Moses. Looks like it was always a political movement . They had no idea of separation of church and state in all these 'religions'. Freud says the idea of ploitical leader and religious head comes from the way Moses behaved to the Jewish people. And he got that from the Pharohs! In a way all the things we are seeng is the rejected faith of Akhenaton that is morphing its way in many forms- Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Marxism, Secualrism, and Nazism.
All are mtheods of political control of people by means of 'religion/killigion"

Talk of the revenge of the Pharohs!

Completed the Freud's book. Makes it clear why there is violence sanctioned by Yahweh, God and Allah. Each is a reappraisal of the changes accepted by the previous one. When he wrote the book it was before WWII. Gives a idea why the latter two killigions are after Jews.

I urge everyone to read it to get his understanding of the issues.

And One God idea didnt come from Egypt but was from outside Egypt most likely Near East or East. He doesnt say which place that is.

But these are all political movements in modern sense using the idea of God to establish an Unviersal Empire or Catholic World or Ummah.

Mitrotsavam 2008
dec 22nd, 2008

http://rajeev.posterous.com/mitrotsavam

the indo-european deity mitra (aka mithras, surya) was worshipped especially on the winter solstice, the shortest and gloomiest day of the year, as the ancients had figured out that the sun would then start on its northward trek on that day: ie. uttarayanam begins, the auspicious time of year.

this is why many ancient monuments (eg. stonehenge) in europe are focused on the winter solstice.

thus the 'aryan' deity surya/mitra forms a continuous link between western europe and india.

however, christists annexed the winter-solstice festival of mitra and claimed their godman jesus was born on that day. there is no evidence that jesus existed, so his so-called birthday is a pure artifice.

strange, isn't it, that the 'aryan-invasion' hoax-worshippers of india do not tell the christists this little fact and demand that the so-called christmas should be celebrated as mitrotsava.

in fact, it is being celebrated in kerala. kerala, protected as it was from the mohammedan invasions by the bulwark of vijayanagar, is the place where the most ancient traditions have had a precarious foothold. for instance, the great vedic rituals --agnicayana -- of the fire sacrifice, with the altars n the shape of a falcon, have been held most recently in kerala (see frits staal, the vedic ritual of the fire altar, the book was originally published by and is available in very limited quantities, with video tapes, by motilal banarsidass ). however, once the communists were able to decimate the nambudiri brahmins, these rituals have vanished there too. but someone is still celebrating the millennia-old mitratsava.

happy mitrotsava to all! and happy makara sankranti (which of course is the winter solstice).

<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->Even the terrorist church of the catholics doesn't lie about this anymore (because it can't):
http://freetruth.50webs.org/B1b.htm#Christmas
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->The birth of Christ was assigned the date of the winter solstice (December 25 in the Julian calendar, January 6 in the Egyptian), because on this day, as the Sun began its return to northern skies, the pagan devotees of Mithras celebrated the Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (Birthday of the Invincible Sun). On December 25, 274, [Roman Emperor] Aurelian had proclaimed the Sun God the principal patron of the Empire and dedicated a temple to Him in the Campus Martius. Christmas originated at a time when the cult of the Sun was particularly strong at Rome.
<b>-- New Catholic Encyclopaedia (Vol. III, p.656, 1967 ed.)</b><!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->That's because the early church had already admitted that they'd stolen the day from the Romans. Link http://altreligion.about.com/library/wee...52902a.htm<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd--> (http://freetruth.50webs.org/B1b.htm#Christmas also shows some christian site admitting that jeebus' birthday was celebrated in Egypt on 6 January which was *another* stolen birthday: that of an Egyptian Goddess. The point was that jeebus did not exist, had no birthday and the local Gods were popular while jeebus' non-existent self wasn't, so the early christians had to steal other religions' Gods' birthdays in an attempt to transfer existing popularity onto jeebus.)

Indo-European cannot be used here. Mitra/Mithra was specifically an Indian and Iranian God that the Romans adopted - not in some unknown and therefore "negotiable" prehistory, but in *known* history (later, Julian naturally identified the Persian Sun God Mithra with the Roman Sol/Greek Helios; for instance, I think his hymn was to Helios but his baptism was into Mithraism) - because this God's popularity had made its way into Rome. Greece mostly passed on him because they didn't want anything Persian, their traditional enemy. Rome succumbed though.

Mithra came to Rome via many nations in the Empire - there are a vast number of mithraeums in the near East, particularly Syria and elsewhere in the Empire. Syria is not Indo-European last I checked.

Google for mithraeums in Syria and all through the path to Rome. Rome would later construct Mithraeums in the rest of the European part of its Empire (including the north, and also more mithraeums in Syria etcetera).

Here's some support:
http://www.jesusneverexisted.com/Mithraism.html
<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin--><b>Mithras Goes to Rome</b>

The cult of Mithras was actually of very ancient lineage, traceable in one form or another through at least two thousand years. In origin it was the primordial sun-worship – the father of all religion. Iconography showed Mithras, in Phrygian cap and cloak, riding his fiery chariot across the sky. But it was also an eastern religion, reaching the Roman world from India via Persia. Traditional hostility with Persia did not favour Rome adopting a religion of its enemies. <b>This changed however in the 60s BC when Pompey’s legions first entered Syria.</b> Mithraism had so well established itself in the Commagene, Armenia and eastern Anatolia that whole dynasties of kings had called themselves ‘Mithradates’ (‘justice of Mithra’). <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->Northern Europe celebrated Yuletide at winter solstice.

It was in the second half of the 3rd century when Emperor Aurelian caused all of Rome to celebrate the birthday of Sol: 25 December became a holy-day. He elevated a religion that was already becoming rather popular into a religion with imperial patronage.

<b>ADDED:</b> Sol Invictus was merged with the existing Mithraism (because Romans identified the Sun with ... the Sun! Mind-boggling, I know.)

On the eastern fringes of the Roman empire itself in Syria, the Sun was worshipped. Perhaps he [Sun] would bring new vitality and power to Rome. That religious observance on winter solstice was popular in ME and Europe is mirrored in the same popularity that another festival - now called Easter - had in the same regions (ME/Europe). It's even stranger. The thing that these goras wanted so desperately to claim as their own (IE) actually originated from outside (india). And the thing that they thought came from outside (namely christianity or normativism) is actually original to them. You would think that being able to finally lay claim to their christian geopolitical soul would be a welcome homecoming, but the homecoming turns out to be a funeral. This just may be the mother of all tragedies. What is actually going on here?
